Well, that's one way to use a 19...
"Lemme see." Alwyn leans over the crouching wizard and mutters his own cantrip. "That looks like a Gebbite skull mask, a powerful and rather sinister magical item."
It's a Mask of the skull. I'll wear it if nobody else wants it.
Sefayll Valerian |
"Yes, yes, of course." She turns it over as she examines it, new respect evident. "I have never seen one of Gebbite make before, but I have heard of them. The illustrations I have seen were all from more northerly tribes and had a ... primitive cast to them. Per their reputation, sinister is an apt description. I don't think I'd care to try it on, myself."
And I'm pretty sure my helm uses the head magic item slot, anyway.

Perception 6+14=20.
"Caves - two of them, actually. Let's try the top one - it is easier to climb down than up if we need to do that, after all."
As we march, I've healed up myself, Camlo and Hudak. I've scratched 34 charges of my CLW wands (the storm giant got some big hits in).

"I wonder how likely it would be that either cave provides another way into the fortress..."
Sefayll Valerian |
Sef: you think I'm going to answer that one?
It was of more general intent - whether caves in this area were more or less likely to extend back into the solid rock or if they would be shallow depressions. I wasn't expecting a discourse of the extent of the tunnel, if tunnel there be, without having explored it first.

It is geologically possible.

"You know, it is possible one of those caves will provide a less-guarded entry to the fortress."
Alwyn Agnarrson |
"Well, that would be very convenient. Let's go find out, shall we?"
Alwyn Agnarrson wrote:Was Logue involved in writing this adventure? If so, I don't know if I want to find Mokmurian's bedroom... :§It's a Wolfgang Baur adventure, so the sexual perversion qotient is quite low.
Sure, but his name sounds suspiciously German...
Illes Elandru |
"Huh, well it seems like an awfully obvious security problem that whoever built this fortress would have noticed if it led inside. Imagine if we can see those caves from here..." Illes shrugs, "but anything beats those front gates. I'm all for checking it out."

Alwyn and Camlo:
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Out of curiosity, is Camlo hiding behind individual air molecules as there isn't much cover up here? I mean, it's a good roll, but not that good.
The group Air Walk towards the higher cave. The sun is a glow behind the eastern peaks and the aerial view over the valley of Jorgenfist and the gorge beneath it is impressive. The details of the fortress gradually reveal themselves as the light improves. The tower has many intricate details, the whole in a slick black stone, giving it a sinister appearance. It is presumably ancient, built on an epic scale and not resembling anything built by the more recent civilisations in the area, but shows little sign of wear. The other towers are much more utilitarian, with big slots for rock-throwing.
Perception checks, please.

"They are only a security concern if your enemies can reach them. Perhaps they are confident that those they fear cannot fly. Or they are arrogant enough to not realize they actually need to consider guarding every route. Or if they are not truly unguarded. The yrthak is a formidable guard..."
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Sefayll's words are unfortunately prophetic as, with a rustle of wings, another yrthak swoops from behind to attack.
Yrthaks are big and not exactly stealthy, so the DC was only 10. Unfortunately, Sefayll's helmet seems to interfere with her vision... Surprise round, though only Sef is actually surprised. I'll set out a map, though it's not like it'll have much on it since you are in midair sort-of over the gorge. In the meantime - please roll initiative.
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Not exactly the trickiest map ever. You are all Air Walking somewhere O-Z/15-25. Assume you and the yrthak are all at the same altitude, although that can obviously change as the battle commences. You are about three hundred feet in the air over the gorge.
Please place yourselves, and also don't forget that you are subject to the restrictions of the Air Walk spell and don't have full manoeuvrability like with a Fly spell. And this is a surprise round, so single actions only.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Initiatives:
Camlo 27
Yrthak 18
Illes 16
Sefayll 14+ (surprised)
Hudak 14-
Alwyn 12
Sefayll Valerian |
Sefayll is going to be somewhere in the middle to back of the group, so I will need to see where the rest are first. I assume we are traveling right-to-left prior to the yrthak's arrival? Or are we traveling top-to-bottom and he's coming from the side?
Camlo Zenovia |
Put Camlo in W17, he was up front with Alwyn.I make that also just at the 30ft range for sneak attack/point blank shot :)
Atk: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (4) + 17 = 21 dmg: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Sneak Atk: 5d6 + 5 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 2, 1) + 5 = 18The last 5 of those being bleed damage

"Wo-hoooo!" Hudak, exulting in his ability to run mid-air, sprints after the yrthak.
Airwalking = walking on land. So, off he goes! Charge to X12 before pounding the thing using 3-point Power Attack. Attack roll 11+21+2(charge)+1(haste)-3(Power Attack)=AC 32, damage 1d10+19+9(PA)=35.
