My doctor has signed me off work for a week to rest my arm and shoulder. On that basis, I'm going to avoid using my home computer too, so I won't be posting for a week. I'm sorry for all the disruption to the games, but hopefully this will do the trick.
We're off to San Diego for some vacationing from Friday until next Sunday. I might check in occasionally from an internet cafe, but I'll mostly be offline.
Hmmm... I looked the guy up, and now I kinda wish I hadn't. It also drives home why I don't read any playtesting threads or anything about gameplay. :§
Yeah, for the most part I do too, there are too many people who frequent those discussions who I just find really annoying and frustrating. Sometimes I get sucked in despite my better judgement.
I have no problem with differences of opinion or interpretation – this can (potentially ... if this wasn’t the internet) lead to good compromises and new revelations. I have slightly more issue with people who refuse to see the other point of view, although ... sometimes I find certain points of view so wrong headed that I fall into hypocrisy and refuse to see it myself. What really, really frustrates me is when people belittle others’ point of view, and believe that being ‘right’ means they don’t need to be at all civil or polite.
Oh, and people who can argue their point until blue in the face, but their argument suggests they don’t actually play the game, at least not in any way that I can understand it.
Or people who think if they don’t like something about the game it must mean it needs to be officially changed. Not theat just maybe they should house rule it. Doesn’t matter if other people find that thing acceptable, the devs need to change it!!
But then this is the internet.

I didn't know he did. I'll put on my hazmat suit and have a look. I did post in a thread where his merits (or lack thereof) were being debated and I suggested that they (the posters in general) just flag and move on. Then the thread was closed. Ah well, this board loves its denizens.
Maybe that’s what he’s referring to, I didn’t see that one. In two different threads that were both along the lines of ‘what to do about jerks on the forums’, MG seems to have assumed they were about him (chances are they were) and posted something along the lines of ‘I’m reminded of what Aubrey wrote in another thread.’
Looks like you still have your fan club over there Aubrey.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Funny, really - I'd like him to piss of the boards and not come back, although he's mainly iritating people in section of the board I don't frequent so I'm not teribly bothered.
And after that high minded post above I went and got involved in a rules / tactics discussion with MG. There is no evident reply to my final post, so I assume either I dazzled him with my brilliance and he has no possible rejoinder, or whatever he did post in reply got removed for violating messageboard guidelines ... I suspect the latter, considering Ross removed several posts immediately following mine. Oh well, I still call that a win.
Shouldn’t it be a rule that if you need to get more than a couple of posts removed in a day it scores you an insta-ban?

Alwyn's updated. I rolled 6 for his hit points, put a stat point in WIS and expanded my domain section a bit. He now has the Blood and Rage subdomains from the APG; as level 8 is where the extra domain powers kick in, this seemed like the time to update those.
I'm still surprised we made it out of that fight. The Creature From The Black Lagoon had SR 25+, insane AC, that breath weapon, multiple attacks... It well and truly flabbered my gast.
No worries ... Aubrey kept saying how the tower was unstable (esp. when Elie was inside) and we weren’t doing much damage to the thing ... it seemed worth trying.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
El is teh suck.
Apparently, though it isn't in the actual book, in the "Director's Cut" of Hook Mountain (which Nick discussed on the boards) dropping the temple on Magga is the way to go. In the final book Magga sort of turns up, eats a few people and then gets bored and leaves, which felt a bit duff.
Yeah, that is a bit boring. Dropping a tower on her is much cooler.
Still, it’s kind of comforting to know that we weren’t actually supposed to be able to beat her in a standard fight, what with the insane armour class, spell resistance, strength, hit dice (no doubt), reach … oh and tentacles that could go through frikken walls.

Yeah, it's a funny encounter, really. I'm not quite sure why it's there, other than they have a Lamashtu sub-theme going in RotRL and it is a cool, freaky monster. But it worked out well in the end.

I haven't really looked at the sub-domains - how do they work?
Hey Aubrey- I've had this whip of entangling for a while now, but I don't know how it works. Do I have to hit normal AC or touch with it? Once it hits do they make a reflex save to avoid entangling? And once entangled, what is required to get out?
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
You fool! Why should I know how it works?
I thought that you did a combat manoeuvre with it (like disarming or tripping) and the entangling gives you a bonus to that, but to be fair I haven't really read up on what whips do, I just know you had one before. (You had one before, right?)
I did have a whip before, yes. Unless I missed it though there is no entangling property for weapons that I would look up to figure it out.
It seems like the rules for a net are the closest thing to what this should do with obvious exceptions of range and needing to fold it.
prd wrote:
Net: A net is used to entangle enemies. When you throw a net, you make a ranged touch attack against your target. A net's maximum range is 10 feet. If you hit, the target is entangled. An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run. If you control the trailing rope by succeeding on an opposed Strength check while holding it, the entangled creature can move only within the limits that the rope allows. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a concentration check with a DC of 15 + the spell's level or be unable to cast the spell.
An entangled creature can escape with a DC 20 Escape Artist check (a full-round action). The net has 5 hit points and can be burst with a DC 25 Strength check (also a full-round action). A net is useful only against creatures within one size category of you.
A net must be folded to be thrown effectively. The first time you throw your net in a fight, you make a normal ranged touch attack roll. After the net is unfolded, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls with it. It takes 2 rounds for a proficient user to fold a net and twice that long for a nonproficient one to do so.
Normal whips just give you the ability to attempt the trip or disarm maneuver and if you fail the CMB vs CMD, drop it without provoking an AoO for your insolence.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
I'm not surprised you can't find it, I made it up. At the time I suggested a +2 CMB and CMD bonus for trip and disarm manoeuvres using it.

They change the domain power you get at level 8 (for Destruction, I get barbarian rage instead of the destructive aura; for War, I can make a weapon wounding instead of getting the weapon master ability) and tweak the domain spell list a little.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Has everybody updated their characters for the increased level before you head off to the dam?
hps 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Hey- I got a second attack! Watch out world! ;)
+9 skill ranks. Mostly single ranks in knowledge skills which means I can take 20 for a total of (at least) 30 in everything except Engineering, Religion and Planes for now. Only once per day. I can take 10 to hit DC 20 in them all day.
Favored class bonus went to gain an extra spell known this time (2nd level).
Cha got the stat bump.
New spells: (2nd) Cacophonous Call (enchantment to nauseate a creature) & Mirror Image. (3rd) Charm Monster
Bardic music effects are up to DC 21. Gained Dirge of Doom, but I don't see myself using it. It is a choice between granting +5/+5 with inspire courage or making enemies within 30 feet of me shaken as long as they stay that close and I keep performing.
BAB: +6/+1
Dex (weapon finesse!): +5
Magic/MW: +1
Weapon Focus: +1
TWF with feat and light offhand weapon: -2/-2
Is that right?
Other than that, all done.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
You only get an iterative attack with your off-hand weapon if you have Improved Two-Weapon Fighting and a DEX of 17 or more. You have the DEX but not the feat, as far as I can tell.

Ah, I see, that will be my next feat then!
So +11/+6/+10 ? That's nto too shabby, should give better potential for sneak attack damgaed anyway.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Definitely. Frankly, the finesse is probably the most important thing to add. I'd also consider Improved Initiative at some stage since you can sneak attack flat-footed enemies in the first round.

Yeah, finesse seems to be about the only thing that means a rogue can hit....
As for Improved init, may as well take Surprise Attack as my 10th level rogue talent....If we make it that far ;) Then I can sneak attack anyone I hit in the surprise round :D
Surprise Attack (Ex): During the surprise round, opponents are always considered flat-footed to a rogue with this ability, even if they have already acted.

One thing that I noticed about Eldritch Knight is that, unlike wizards, if I gain a new spell level, I do not automatically gain 2 new spells known. Not an issue at this level, but could be a concern at next, if it doesn’t coincide with enough downtime to learn and scribe some spells. I might take a level in wizard next to avoid this issue.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Are you sure about that, or is it simply something they left out? After all, it's a class that covers both spontaneous and non-spontaneous casters. Personally, as DM I'd let you get the two spells per level to scribe in your book. Does our resident wizards expert have a view?

Well, one of the few things that the pre-Pathfinder wizard class had going for it was the free spells added each level. Most wizards sought to prestige class as soon as possible, but the loss of those free spells was supposed to be some kind of (admittedly weak) balancing factor. In the rules text it very specifically says:
PRD wrote:
Spells Gained at a New Level: Wizards perform a certain amount of spell research between adventures. Each time a character attains a new wizard level, he gains two spells of his choice to add to his spellbook. The two free spells must be of spell levels he can cast. If he has chosen to specialize in a school of magic, one of the two free spells must be from his specialty school.
Note that this quote comes from the Magic chapter and not from the wizard class info. Additionally:
PRD wrote:
Spells per Day: At the indicated levels, an eldritch knight gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for additional spells per day, spells known (if he is a spontaneous spellcaster), and an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming an eldritch knight, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.
It does not say "bonus spells added to the character's spellbook" in the bolded text. It seems to me that this omission is intentional but, as the GM, you are of course permitted to rule otherwise.
Also, as an aside, I don't suppose it would be possible for Vethran to obtain a few hundred GP worth of diamond dust somewhere in Turtleback Ferry would it? I suspect not, but thought I'd ask. I need it as a material component for one of my new spells. :)
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
OK, thanks for that - I'll run with the interpretation above if Mothy is happy.
In terms of diamond dust, let's assume a friendly wizard supply boat just happened to come by recently.

Good deal. I'll buy 500gp worth, enough for 2 castings of stoneskin. And of course, Elisile is always welcome to copy spells from Vethran's spellbook to add to her own as needed. Your selection will be somewhat limited by Vethran's specialties of course, but it's better than nothing. :)

The bits Fate quoted is exactly how I arrived at that conclusion, so I'm happy to run with it.

Quick question about rules interpretation:
With regards to the spell resilient sphere, the spell says it contains a 1' diameter area per caster level. Now, since a Large creature takes up a 10' area, would you need to cast at 10th caster level to contain a Large creature? Or, since most creatures don't actually FILL the space they take up on the grid, would 8 or 9 feet be adequate? I'm aware that not all Large creatures are exactly the same size, but was curious how this was going to be arbitrated for my personal reference.
