One Rogue gatecrasher coming up, Aubrey, a few questions before I begin creating possibly the worst build ever...
What system (I assume 3.5 but did you guys switch to PFRPG?)?
What level?
What starting Gold
Any odd restrictions I should know about?
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
- PFRPG (we converted)
- same level as the rest (whatever that is - it is in the profile pages of the characters)
- standard for level
- house rules are in my Demented/Malformed avatar profile, but no, nothing specific comes to mind
Ok, looking at the others that would be level 6, and working backwards from Elisile's profile, I make it a 24 point buy...
I'll have a play as soon as children are asleep.
@Vattnisse Yeah, I whinged a couple of days ago about pbps dying after a year or so, and Aubrey was gracious enough to invite me in. Someone piped up that a rogue was needed and I've never played one, so sounds fun.
Stat-wise, we're actually D&D 30-point characters who then got a "+2 in the relevant stat" boost when we converted to PF. But if that works out as a 24-point PF buy, that's good.
As for characters, we're an odd group - we started off as a big, melee-heavy group, but drop-outs have turned us into a small finesse-oriented party. We only have one real fighter, one cleric (who spends a lot of time in melee) and three arcane spellcasters. So, the ideal character should be able to contribute a bit to the fighting, be a capable stealth and traps man and have enough ranks in Use Magic Device to help me out a bit in the healing department. Maybe a ranger/rouge build? Just thinking out loud.

Hmmm, without having read any of this, I now have a rogue with an attack bonus of +10 on all the weapons he possesses, two weapon fighting feat (both weapons are light) 3d6 sneak attack, with the bleed rogue talent (so attacks do lasting damage....), a stealth score of +21, disable device at +15.....
I'll just create an avatar, and then you can all pour over and suggest changes.....

To be fair, Illes can cast lower-level cure spells and can use wands of CLW without even needing UMD. Plus, since Elisile has a Ranger level, she can use low-level cure wands too. I think we're okay there. :)
That's true. I guess I just like rogues with maxed-out UMD skill.

We need a dwarf rogue dual-wielding light maces. We have a serious lack of bludgeoning damage and none of us have innate darkvision. Clearly this is the answer. (A half-orc would also be acceptable.)

Not quite.....

P.S.: I'm kidding. Make what you want.
Damn it, that would be soooo cool ;) but no...guess again...
He needs a background (although something with Magnimar and a thieves guild will feature) and also some mundane items....
I've worked on 16k GP from the wealth by level chart, and a 24 point buy, with a stat increase to Dex at level 4.
With a rapier/punching dagger combination, he won't do much damage unless he sneaks, but if he does, ;)
Any comments/suggestions?
Anyone who feels like it *should* check my maths, I *always* get something wrong....

I haven't looked in detail at your character, and the others are better at that stuff than me. I guess the question I need aswering is.... What are you doing in Fort Rannick?
On the background, we are closer to Korvosa than we are to Magnimar. Korvosa has a more Chelish sort of culture than Magnimar, in which halflings are not well-treated. Might that maybe give a bit more oomph to the backstory, or do you have something worked out already Magnimar-wise?
Also, the value of your gear seems more than 16k at a quick scan. And what sort of armour are you wearing? Leather, presumably? And why do you actually have anti-giant weaponry, flavour-wise (though it is hardly a bad idea)?

As far as that goes, in fort Rannick, or in turtlebeck ferry? Actually in the fort could prove a little more complex, but it all depends on where you are at and where he will be introducted.

I have some ideas in my head, but nothing firm. I'm going to think about that a bit over night.....but I'll keep the Korvosa connection in mind...may be fun.

I work it out at 4,320 for the rapier (2x2000 for the +1 and the bane, 300 for the masterwork, and 20 for the rapier base), 2,302 for the punching dagger, 2,400 for the crossbow. So 9,022gp for the weapons...
2,175 for the +1, light fortification studded leather armour...(2x1,000 + 150 masterwork, + 25 studded leather)
Then 2,000 for the ring of protection, and 1,650 for the necklace...
That I figure comes to 14,747gp.....
I just went into that much detail because, like I say, I always get these wrong.
I'm more than happy to tone these down if I've got them out, or if you think it#s a bit much.
And yes, there is some meta-gaming in the bane. At this point, I've worked it out as being there, and if I don't come up with something that I think makes enough sense in the back story (which is more than likely) it will mysteriously drop out. ;)
It should be pretty easy to retcon our last day of adventure and say that our new companion came with us from Turtleback Ferry. He still needs an "in" - perhaps he too crossed the Magnimar legal system and was "encouraged" to do some civil service like us?

OK, I can see where the problem is. When you add powers to an item you add the enhancement bonuses together. So a +1 bane weapon is actually priced like a +2 weapon (+1 for the +1, + 1 for the bane) which means the cost of the enchantment is 8,000, not 2,000 x 2. Similarly with the armour. So your +1 giant bane rapier should cost 8,320gp and your armour and 4,175gp. That's an extra 6,000gp which puts you comfortably above 20k rather than 16k.

I woke up this morning and though "bugger, I did that again". My only defence is that I find (and found in the 3.5 books too) the magic item section *really* annoying if you aren't generating random treasure. I make this same mistake every time.
I'll go through and tweek those so they don't cost far too much... ;)

Please, the DM has it covered.
:) Well I know why he was headed for turtlebeck ferry.... So if he is to be actually within the fort, I have a nice idea about that too....
Care to drop me an email or spoiler?
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Let's go to spoilers here, we can share ideas.
On the items, if you ditch the giant bane rapier and have it as a simple +1, and make one of your secondary weapons a masterwork you should be fine, and have some money left over for potions (and the ubiquitous potion belt or, if you go all UMD, scrolls or a wand).
Ok, changes made. Rapier is basic +1, the punching dagger is masterwork, and I took the fortification off the armour.
That frees me up 5k from my bad maths, so I have around 6kgp left.
That can be spent on potions/wands/scrolls/items.... Suggestions anyone?
Aubrey:
As far as history goes, I wanted Camlo to be former member of the Gargoyles in Magnimar. He was working his way up pretty well, until a run in with a higher up member not too long ago. He was put in the position of having to fight a well trained fighter in a straight fight, and instead fled.
Knowing how Cheliax would treat him, he instead opted for Turtlebeck Ferry, as safely far enough from the gargoyles to be "safe" but also not in Cheliax propper.
So, did he get caught by a bunch of ogres and is now sitting in their "larder"???
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Nevynxxx:
Spoiler:
I was thinking that maybe he could have been involved in some larcenous deed that went wrong and he had to flee town with Hellknights on his tail. Clearly, therefore, what he would have been involved with would need to be something pretty big, possibly offensive to the powers that be - perhaps he was involved in pilfering some sort of item of power, of discovered something important. His accomplices may be rubbed out by now and he is the only one left. He may not know what it is he has done, only that someone with sway over the Hellknights is involved (mainly because I haven't necessarily thought it through yet) but I thought the fun (for me) of this story could be having Hellknights (maybe even his own personal nemesis, a bit like that military police colonel who used to regularly try and arrest the A-Team) popping up at awkward moments to drag him back to a dreadful fate.
This idea, though, works best with a Chelaxian or Korvosan element as, while they do have Hellknights in Korvosa they are less part of the fabric of society. Also, if it is more Chelaxian, then it could even be more of a freedom fighter-y thing rather than necessarily criminal (though I have no object to the criminal angle, this is just a possibility it opens up). As for why in Turtleback Ferry/Fort Rannick, it is far away from anywhere much and offers the chance to disappear and lie low for a while. You could have simply been passing through Fort Rannick when the ogres attacked.
Ohhh, that could be fun. I'm pretty sure I have the first, but not the second hell knight article from the KoT AP, but not the rest as yet....I'll have a look though that and see if anything strike my creative juices
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Nevynxxx
Spoiler:
I'd recommend getting the second article if you can - if has scads of detail on the history of the orders. The first is mostly mechanics.
By the way, I'd leave on the Fortification on your armour since you can afford it, or maybe just make it +2. The healing angles are quite well covered. It's actually quite hard to find enough scrolls, potions and stuff to fill up several grand's worth of spend, in my experience.
yeah, my subscriptions are on hold while I scarmble to get a new job. My Ex-employer went under in December.... I'll have it eventually, but not for a month or so I expect
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Nevyn, finished off Camlo yet?
By the way, how is the job hunt going? Sorry to hear about you being laid off?
In terms of intro:
Spoiler:
I'm thinking of having you hiding out in the caves behind the waterfall. A nice, simple way to get into the team in probably the next day or so. I was thinking of you maybe hiding in a barrel, trapped by shocker lizards from getting out and by ogres from going back.
By the way, how is the job hunt going? Sorry to hear about you being laid off?
I shall have him up by the end of the day I should think.
The job thing is crap. Less laid off, and more the company no longer exists in a form that is big enough to justify me. Not good, but I'd have made the same decision in the circumstances. Finding a job when you don't have one is not the nicest of tasks, especially at the moment though....
Final Cut. Unless anyone has any other suggestions. Camlo has spent a lot of time alone recently, and his equipment should kinda reflect that, utility wands for getting out of sticky situations etc....
Aubrey:
One background. Taken some liberties with Golarion Canon, but nothing big I don't think.....
Camlo Zenovia was always seen as a capricious young thing. First before his brothers and sisters for meals. First before them all for the sweetmeats at market. Last behind them all to finally go to sleep.
As he grew, he grew shorter than his siblings too. Never quite so strong, nor so wise. He was always the quickest though. The fastest to run, the quietest to hide. Always, he had slunk away well before anyone came along to punish their mistakes.
Perhaps this partially explains why, in his 18th year, he went to his work, and was not seen by his family again. In truth, months of planning, and preparation had gone into this day. Careful investigation, and following of hints had led him to the secret group known as the Gargoyles.
Years of petty theft followed, first as a simple lookout, and later as Master Thief, planning and running jobs against the nobles of Magnimar. Camlo was The rising star of recent years, admired, and feared by those above him. Some would sneer, and say he rose too quickly. Others would claim that is was just bad luck. But when Camlo planned his final job, he didn't realise that the rich merchantess he targeted, was the mistress of the notorious assassin, the Black Mark. To his credit, Camlo's research was flawless, and it would be safe to assume that even the Lady in question didn't know the truth of her lovers noteriety.
The Black Mark soon sought out Camlo, and gave him a choice; To face the Mark, in the Gargoyles central hall in mortal combat, or to face poison in the night. For his faults, Camlo knew his strengths, and his weaknesses. He walked out of Magnimar that very night, spending all of his wealth on a combination of protective spells, and leaving all possible hope of seeing his family or former colleagues again.
But where does a dispossessed halfling flee? Always he had heard of the devils in Cheliax, and how badly his race had been treated there. Korvosa, it was told, was more lenient, and a person of Camlo's nature could make a good living of the hated Chelaxians that even now still pass though.
The dream was short lived though. The gates were manned by the Order of the Nail, and Camlo had no papers. A scuffle ensued, a sword was drawn, and a fully armoured Knight of the order was dead on the ground within seconds. Camlo Fled. Knights of the Order hard on his heels, as they have been ever since.
Months have passed. Months of hiding, of running and of stealing. Finally, on the edge of the forest leading to the small gambling town of Turtlebeck ferry. A small stop to gamble with the soldiers of the fort. A laud bang, and a horrendous roar, bespoke time to leave.
Now Camlo sits in a barrel, Ogres to the left, Shocker Lizards to the right, wondering which Gods he offended for it to all end like this.

Heh heh, I like it.
Spoiler:
TWO enemies to play with. My cup runneth over.
Not sure about the wand of Featherfall - no problem with it exactly, but without it in your hand at precisely the right moment it might never work or get to be used.

I can see what you mean... I also have a vision of this small man, stood on the edge of a cliff, beasties coming after him, failing the UMD check. At the last moment it works, and he steps off, with a big grin on his face.....
The spell has a duration, so I would expect to be able to cast, then start the fall, if you rule that the object has to be falling *before* it's effective, well, then it's a damned risky choice!

Ah, OK, that works fine, then, though a part-charged wand of Levitate might be better.
It's that time of the year again - I'm headed off to the annual International Studies Association conference on Friday and won't be back until next Monday. If it is anything like the previous conferences, the hotel will charge such exorbitant rates for internet connections that I'll be offline until the whole thing is over. :(
Alwyn'll stash his platemail in Hudak's Bag of holding and keep it off until we're done with the electro-monsters behind the waterfall. After that, he'll armour up and do whatever y'all see fit.
Hey folks- not to crash the party, but just want to say how much I've enjoyed reading this thread- not to mention Aubrey's Eberron game. I have now read EVERY SINGLE POST in both. Great stuff- great writing, characterization, action, pacing- evocative descriptions- excellent world-building (it's still world building even if the setting pre-exists, IMHO!). A great DM and great players.
The bad news is- now that I've read through all the posts in both games so far- well, now how will I stay up till 4 am several times a week on nights when I really, really, really, need to be sleeping? Answer me that! (Think I'm exaggerating? The bags under my eyes stare you down like two glowering Hudaks!)
Thanks for the funz!
Much appreciated...

Glad you are enjoying it, Marcus. It is always nice to get comments like these from lurkers. I certainly enjoy playing in this game with this group and I hope it comes across. Next step: Heathy's Saltmarsh campaign threads. They'll put you to sleep right away.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Yes, if you want plenty to read, Heathy's Saltmash and Heathy's Isle of Dread are the places to go.
Aubrey the Malformed(No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30)
Actually, it is worth mentioning that I will be going to the US for about three weeks from the beginning of March. It might disrupt posting a little while I am in transit but I should be OK most of the time.
You'll need to head off into the archives for the first two Saltmarsh threads. They do make for fine reading, though - Heathy subscribes to the Raymond Chandler school of storytelling ("when things slow down, have someone kick in the door"), but has a William Burroughs-style approach - think Naked lunch meets The big sleep, with extra helpings of splatter and goblins. The result is both completely demented and utterly compelling. Enjoy!

The kicking in of the door is doubly important for a pbp, man.
Just sayin....;)
I'm just trying to get across that you're like an artist, a deep thinker and a wordsmith, dude. ;P

Naw, that's cool. It was a cool review.
Kicking in the door is a really useful tool because it gets everybody pumped up on the game; I find that pbp's can get kinda draggy if you don't throw a gob o' mooks at the party now and again.
It gets things rolling.

Ironic 'cause William Burroughs used to be an old flame of mine. No, really. (Yes, he was much much much older than me. What can I say? I liked his books!)
If you watch this trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU8EUbJ28dc) - you can see the actual me talking about sleeping in William's bed- and, oh yeah- finding a loaded gun. Ah youth! Good times...
