Lightbringer raps firmly on the small door of the apartment, being sure not to damage the surface of the door.

“Miss Venor-Tixler, are you home? It is Lightbringer, I spoke to you yester-eve.”

There is a a pause and then a muffled female voice from inside says, "Hello - who's there?"

As Lightbringer explains who it is the door opens a crack and Dala peers out. Her hair is slightly tousled and she wears a dressing gown over her nightwear.

At being told of the potential danger she faces, she looks fearful, blue eyes round like pennies. When it is suggested that she rely on Jendry for her safety, she sniffs disdainfully. "I'm not planning on involving myself with him. I'll go and stay with relatives in Korranberg for a bit - I'm due some a holiday. I can take the lightning rail."

She thanks everyone and closes the door.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Hopefully before she closes the door, I offer to employ a Tharashk armsman for her to see her from Sharn to Korranberg, if she desires.

Well, not sure you can really make that offer in good faith. You aren't a senior member of the House, you don't have the Favoured in House feat and you aren't on House business. Unless you want to pay the going rate.

Dala shakes her head. "Only if he's here in the next hour or so, as I'll be heading to the station by then."

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

I was thinking a level 1 Half-orc fighter, which IIRC is only 1 gp/day, and it is maybe a 2 day trip to Korranberg. I think I can swing it. I will check the actual cost when i get Dragonmarked in my hands tonight

"I will do my very best, madam"

As soon as she closes the door, "Janosz, will you accompany me to the enclave? AS for the rest of you, please remain here and watch over Dala, I will do my level best to return with her escort in the alotted time. We can all see her off on the ligtning rail, and the armsman should discourage anyone from striking at her while she travels."

My intent is fast skycoach there, hire the most available bodyguard, and run back. Unless there is a special need to roleplay though, I expect to be gone about 45 minutes.

OK, it's a good thought. The cost seems reasonable. The trip to Korranberg takes a surprisingly long time - it goes via Wroat (i.e. the wrong way) if I recall but two days should do it. However, you need to pay for the hireling's ticket - let's say that'll be 15gp, though the actual amount is the Explorer's Guide if you have it handy. You probably need to make a Diplomacy check to get it done in your timescale - say DC 12 - circumventing requisition paperwork, especially as bodyguard duty is more of a Deneith sort of thing. Feeling lucky, punk?

I will check all the costs tonight and spend the appropriate amount, up to the limit of the 100 or so gp I have on me.

Diplomacy - 8 + 6 = 12

And Tharashk is making huge inroads into the bodyguard/mercenary market, but specifically with their own half-orcs and monsterous 'noids outta of Drooam. I thought it best to get a half-orc...

Trose eventually returns with Janosz, sans mercenary and lightning rail ticket, about an hour and a half later; Janosz looks mildly exasperated and Trose is irritable and a bit chastened. In the meantime, Dala has packed and is walked to the nearest skycoach rank by Lightbringer and Nox to catch a taxi to the lightning rail terminus in Tavick's Landing, with Runzyl and Ezreal waiting by Dala's home in case Trose gets back early. By the time Trose does get back, Lightbringer and Nox have returned and are waiting with the other two.

Very gallant, chaps, and unexpected by me. While it didn't quite work out as intended, have 50xp as a sort of consolation prize. OK, what are you doing next?

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

I mumble something under my heavy breath...

"Well, now Lady Dala is safe and for certain out of the hands of Daask. Let us get back to the matter at hand, everyone ready to head for High Walls?"

While I walk, I silently contemplate the 'intorductions' my uncle had offered me. Perhaps I have stayed too far from the family business for too long...

Assuming this character survives, and I continue playing it, I am gonna shoot for favored in house at 3

Don't make any long term plans. Mwahahahahahahahaha! Actually, not a bad idea - you can get Dragonmarked Heir or whatever that prestige class is called then.

Mostly laying the foundation now, and the motivation behind it, so when i hit three, I am not suddenly and inexplicably everyone's buddy in Tharashk

OK - off to High Walls?

I wander to the nearest skycoach pier, and attempts to flag down one of the large craft. Suddenly the realization of just how much time I have spent zipping up and down and around on lifts, balconies, and skycoaches hits me square in the face.

Not sure how readily available they are, but i keep my eyes open for a reputible looking place to buy a feather fall token

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The group, as before, pile into a couple of skycoaches and head for High Walls. The drivers are not impressed with the destination, and will only drop off at the Watch post by the gates - they refuse to go in.

After a short flight from Menthis to Lower Tavick's Landing, the coaches touch down. The drivers quickly take their payment and are airborne almost immediately. The Watch curiously eye the travellers who have arrived at the gates of High Walls by such a relatively expensive means, but don't bother to interfere - these tourists are armed, armoured and presumably capable.

Inside the heavy, iron-bound gate, the squalour of High Walls is apparent. It is still reasonably early, but clusters of men and youths stand aroung in shabby garb, seemingly aimless and lethargic. There is very little work in and around High Walls, so most have little to do other than drink or take dreamlily. The sad remnants of Cyran flags hang limply in the muggy air, more depressing and poignant than uplifting. A wall is painted with a giant Cyran royal family coat of arms, but on closer inspection the paint is flaking and patches are obscured by grime.

The party is eyed resentfully by the locals. Trose, by himself, could move about discreetly but an armed party of six makes much more of an impression. A grumbling murmur is picked up in a few instances as the companions march briskly past knots of bored-looking locals, not caring to dawdle. Most seem content to just stare, but....

Splat! A rotting cabbage hits Runzyl in the back as he passes one group. "Valenar scum - what are you doing here? Squatting on Cyran land while we rot here, making slaves of our kinsmen. You want some Cyran justice? Horse-f@**ers, all of you."

The obvious place to buy a Feather Fall token is at the Cannith emporium.

Runzyl's face twists with rage as he turns to confront the offending individual, stabbing a finger directly at him.

"The destruction of your homeland was not by Valenar hands! You have none to blame but yourself! As for your kinsmen, the only ones who serve as slaves are the ones too cowardly to die with honor in battle! Spare me your threats of 'justice.' You haven't the strength to seek it." Intimidate check: 10 - 1 = 9 (or 13 if you allow me to use Strength instead of Charisma since I am basically telling this guy to 'bring it')

Runzyl sneers, drawing his double scimitar to his hand in anticipation of violence and surveys his opposition, trying to see if any amongst them are actually armed. Spot: 3 + 2 = 5

Lightbringer is relieved that Dala is now safe from any reprisals, but as the group makes their way to High Walls he grows silent and strangely unresponsive. His mind is on the fate of Brother Erfan. He knows that he should be doing something, while knowing equally well that charging into Daask territory with sword drawn and no plan will only get himself and any of his companions brave and stupid enough to accompany him killed. He is also somewhat chastened that his companions are intent on sticking to their original mission – which really should be foremost in his mind as well – while he is having to fight off thoughts of bloody revenge. Most unbefitting a paladin. He prays that he will not give in to them.

The cabbage striking Runzyl at last shakes him out of his lethargy. As the elf draws his sword and faces the hostile and somewhat desperate looking refuges he says softly, “Recall friend Runzyl, how you stopped me from doing something foolish and hasty earlier this morning? I would caution you of the same. Save your sword for our enemies, when you and I shall stand side by side and bring justice to the criminals. At this time and place, we must show humility.”

Runzyl glares over his shoulder at the warforged as he speaks, then seems to calm slightly as he straightens up, almost hissing at the refugees as he takes a step away from the crowd.

"You are right," Runzyl smirks. "These ones would not be worthy foes for a Valenar warrior. They know well enough our battle prowess, else they would not have been displaced from their homes. I shall not remind them today..."

Runzyl flashes a wicked grin at the cabbage-thrower before taking a few more steps back, sheathing his weapon, and turning to join the rest of his group.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

I roll my eyes at the posturing of the Valenar and the Refugee, about to speak, Lightbringer intecedes and seems to drag the tension away from the hard edge.

Instead, using a bit of glib, and golden tounge lube, I lead our group as quickly as I can to the address I was given, hoping to avoid furthe incident.

A reference to the original Trose and using gold to lube throats, i tought it was tounges... oh well

The cabbage-thrower, a burly young man with a pockmarked face, seems reluctant to take on six armed men. With hollow bravado he sneers, "You watch yourself, pointy. You and your horse-loving friends are not safe around here," before slinking away.

You leave the main streets of High Walls and its unfriendly citizens and head for the address Trose was given. It is in the bowels of the high towers which make up Lower Tavick’s Landing, in an area which appears to be slightly more salubrious than the main parts of High Walls: the tenements are slightly less broken-down, and the refuse piles are not as great. It is dark, with everbright lanterns widely scattered, and deserted, though the faint sounds of activity can be discerned: distant voices, the rumble of a cart.

You reach the door, which is covered in flaking green paint. You immediately notice it is ajar, the wood of the frame split by the lock. It has clearly been forced open.

Spot checks, please. If you get 24 or more:

Spoiler:
Almost impossible to detect, you spot a small child-like figure hiding, unmoving, amongst a pile of rubbish. You suspect it may be watching you.

Listen checks too, please. If you get 25 or more:

Spoiler:
You can hear the sound of stealthy footsteps in the distance from the direction you approached. As you pause by the door, they recede as if whoever is making them is moving away again.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Oblivious to other possible threats, I draw my short sword quietly, flipping the blade up along my wrist so the folds of my sleeve prevent any tell tale glint of metal.

Then I glance at my companions, and see who, if anyone will be advancing inside...

Since waving a weapon around in belligerant fashion will probably occur quite a bit over time, let's have quick house ruling. You can add your BAB instead of your CHA bonus when attempting a "weapon" intimidate.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Heh heh... While I can't make even a DC 10 Knowledge check, I never miss my sense rolls. Made both of 'em

"Gentlemen". Janosz lowers his voice in an attempt to be slightly less obvious. "Not only are we being followed, we are also being observed. We might want to get ready for something bad to happen".

Having said that, he pulls his greatclub out of his makeshift weapon bundle, before taking a step towards the "hidden" observer.

I needed a natural 20 to make those checks. I didn't get one.

Runzyl perks up at Janosz's statement, immediately surveying the environment to no avail. He draws his weapon and assumes a defensive stance, wary of an ambush.

The beginning stages of Uncanny Dodge are evident, even if I don't have the ability yet.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Given warning, I carefully draw my punch dagger in my off hand...

I too glance around warily searching for the threat.

Those action points are suddenly getting burned fast. Not seen Nox or Ezreal since last week - I'll give'em a few more hours (Ezreal often posts in the morning here) and then roll for them to get things going.

Ah, dude, that's no good. It was good to have you on board. Good luck with work and everything.

Yeah, I second that, it's a big shame to lose you, Jake. It was fun having you around, and Nox was a dude (and man, you pulled - Trini will be so upset). Please feel free to drop by and leave a comment from time to time and let us know how you are getting on.

In the meantime, I'll NPC Nox and advertise for a new player. Sebastian indicated an interest a while back - I'll see if that is still the case - and so did The Eldritch Mr Shiny, though he will be out of circulation for a couple of months over the summer. So if the Californian curmudgeon doesn't want in, I'll advertise generally.

Nox's initiative: 4

Waiting for Ezreal.....

OK, rolling for Ezreal - initiative = 11.

Order:

Trose 25
Janosz 19
Runzyl 16
Lightbringer 12
Ezreal 11
"small figure" 6
Nox 4

OK Trose, you're up.

OK, a bit of physical description. You are standing in a nice little huddle by the door, which faces out on to this deserted street. The door is in the west wall. The street is about 30’ wide, it is dark (anyone with darkvision or low light vision can see fairly normally, but anyone else can only make out vague shapes and movement), and the floor is fairly clear except for the suspicious rubbish pile. Said rubbish pile occupies a 5’ square 30’ to the north on the other side of the street (so it is 6 diagonal squares of movement, or the equivalent of 45’, to get there).

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Realizing the threat that Janosz has alerted us to must be concealed in the rubbish bpile, but uncertain where it is exactly, I will make a double move and try to loop around to the far side of the pile without coming within 5 feet of it.

"I have been having a rough couple of days, so whoever you are, surrender, or die" Diplomacy would be 14, intimidate 10, you decide which is more appropriate

Also, as I move, I try to maintain some situational awareness, glancing up and along the street to make sure this isn't bait for a trap.

Well, it ain't Diplomacy. I'll assume you are now north of the pile by about 10' and maybe 5' from the east wall. You can try a Search roll now, since you are busy eyeballing the pile. If you get more than 10:

Spoiler:
You see a small humanoid figure, about 3' tall, crouching in the muck. It's features are concealed under a voluminous cloak and hood.

If you get 15 or more:

Spoiler:
In the dim light, you notice the glint of metal on the being's arm and straps of harnesses for weapons and similar items.

Anyone else with darkvision or low light vision can try these Search checks from where they are standing, otherwise you need to get close to try.

Male Human Rogue 3/Urban Ranger 1/Dragonmarked Heir 2

Search = 17 +7

Since I have Low-light vision, Search: Nat 20! + 1 = 21

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

On my turn, I dive in and grapple the little bugger. It could be convenient to capture one of our enemies, even if it is only to give him to Jendry.

Lessee... As I act before him, he gets no AoO. My touch attack roll is 14, which means I touch AC 17. If that is sufficient, my grapple check is 13+3+4 (as he is small?)=20. For the moment, I do not try to damage him, only pin him down.

hp 73 of 156; AC 23 (29); Fort +15, Ref +8, Will +13 Warforged Paladin 9 / Exorcist of the Silver Flame 4; Effects: Bless, Airwalk, Weapon of Awe, Ironskin, Bull’s Strength

Aubrey, what are your rules on talking out of initiative order during combat? For instance, can I shout out to Trose or Janosz before my turn, asking what they see?

How did you move 45' and still have an action left? I suppose you can charge and grapple - probably not a bad idea, since the person is flat footed. I'll assume you do that. However, you will also have to drop your club as you need both hands free. Also, you don't get +4 as such, he gets -4 for being small, so you actual grapple result is 16.

Janosz flings himself at the tiny figure in a flying tackle, getting a firm hold.

Spoiler for Janosz:

Spoiler:
Janosz can see the thing fairly clearly - it appears to be a tiny warforged, halfling sized. It gives a strange metallic hiss and he grapples it.

Yes, you can say something, providing it's fairly brief.
