Lightbringer makes sure to slow his pace enough for Nox to easily keep up. “Well friend,” he says to the cleric, as they make their way towards a bridge which will take them towards Clifftop, “I think that was well worth our time, despite Dala being in no apparent danger. We have some results to share with our companions for our day’s work. Of course, it is possible that Trose has also discovered something of Jendry. Those of House Tharashk are supposed to be good at such things.”

He turns to peer down at his companion by the light of the street lamps coming to life in the darkening evening. “What are your thoughts Nox? Are we too in over our collective heads on this matter? I wish that I knew more of Karile d’Cannith, and the internal politics of her house.”

Spoiler for Nox:

Spoiler:
Dala looks somewhat disapproving while talking about Jendry.

Spoiler for both Nox and Lightbringer:

Spoiler:
Dala puts her hand to her mouth and gasps, "Poor Heris! He's a great inquisitive but a lousy businessman, which is why I had to leave him. Oh Heris, how could you be so stupid! Please find him, he's a good man. I don't want to think about him getting hurt." At this, she bursts into tears and hurries into her appartment.

Another spoiler for Nox and Lightbringer:

Spoiler:
Ooops! Continuity error: the Throw of the Dice casino is in Downstairs, not Torchlight, but still in Lower Menthis. Sorry about that.

Spoiler for Janosz:

Spoiler:
You asked a while back if there was anyone on at nights at Heris' office building. The answer is no: the tenants all have keys which they use to let themselves in after normal working hours.

Let's assume everyone has arrived at the Crown and Thorn to discuss the day's events. Everyone can read the "Runzyl/Ezreal/Janosz/Trose" spoiler a few posts back - it is a description of Clifftop.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

As recommended Ezreal orders the ribs and a brown ale, before getting around to see how much progress Trose had made.

"Good to see you made it through alright Trose. Better luck then the rest of us I hope? I couldn't recall the last time I've seen so many suspicious faces in one day- before I even had a chance to say anything mind you..."

Haven't heard from Trose for a bit. If he doesn't show in the next day or so, I'll hand out the information he has.

"My friend between your silver tounge and razor wit and my willingness to sit by and watch you do all the work there is no challenge we can not overcome, we must just simpley have faith in each other and in our selves" Nox says with a smile looking up at the warforged, "when we get back to the inn we should partake in a nice meal and a fine glass of wine" with that said Nox steps up and continues to follow his comrade back to the inn.

“Thankyou my friend, but I am afraid that food and wine would be wasted on me,” replies Lightbringer. “But hopefully we will arrive in time that you may share such with the rest of the group.”

Lightbringer and Nox continue their journey through Sharn’s streets and towers, and soon enough are rejoining their companions at the Crown and Thorn in Clifftop. The armoured warforged gets a few strange looks from diners and staff, but the pair make it to the large table where the rest of the group is finishing up their hearty meal with little incident.

“Greetings friends,” says Lightbringer, standing by the side of the table, looking down at the remains of the meal. He assumes that the others have already shared their day’s findings, and launches into his and Nox’ discovery.

“Dala is safe, she has been harassed by neither Daask nor House Cannith, and did not know any of the details of Heris’ last case. However, she was able to give us a location for this Jendry character: Jendry Ascorthtir, he runs some sort of gaming establishment, “The Throw of the Dice,” in Downstairs, Lower Menthis.” He pauses to allow any questions or interjections from any of his companions.

“Trose, what did you discover today?”

"As long as you beleive there is nothing that is wasted, nothing" Nox says with almost a frown on his face "Just because you do not need it dose not mean you cant enjoy it" Nox says as the smile returns to his face. hmmm do warforged have a sense of taste?? if not than ignore the second part of that post ;P

OK, still no Trose. This was the information he acquired (a copy of his spoiler):

Trose plunges into the hubbub of the busy bars and pubs of Menthis, buying a few drinks and asking subtly pointed questions about Heris and Norn. In Menthis, no one has heard of Norn. However, a few have heard of Heris, a local who grew up in the area. They have also heard of Jendry: Heris and Jendry were boyhood friends. Jendry now runs a casino in the Downstairs region of Lower Menthis, and is rumoured to have Boromar connections.

Trose them moves on to High Walls. This is a fairly bad slum. Entry to the area is guarded by forbidding gates manned by the Watch, and inside tatty tenement buildings and refuse-covered streets predominate, with the occasional Cyran flag flying in resigned defiance. The inhabitants are grim-faced - this is a rough place, reeking of despair.

In a bar, dominated by a portrait of Queen Mishann darkened by age and smoke, Trose learns that Norn was known in the neighbourhood, often helping out with odd tasks as his talents allowed. He was sometimes seen with a few warforged, though these appeared to come and go to some extent. Trose also picks up a fairly important snippet - an address for where Norn might live. Norn hasn't been seen around for a while - maybe a few weeks.

hp 73 of 156; AC 23 (29); Fort +15, Ref +8, Will +13 Warforged Paladin 9 / Exorcist of the Silver Flame 4; Effects: Bless, Airwalk, Weapon of Awe, Ironskin, Bull’s Strength

“So,” says Lightbringer thoughtfully, “we actually have a possible address for Norn? Interesting. Although I would suppose that if it was as easy as finding him at his abode, either Daask or House Cannith would have done so by now. Still, we may find some further clues there.

“We also have the name of the place where Heris’ contact and friend Jendry works. Armed with that, it should be easy enough to find the place.” He looks around at his companions. “Would any of you know The Throw of the Dice? I’ve never had any cause to visit such establishments myself.” He looks around the room and then says, “Of course, I’ve also never had much cause to visit establishments such as this either.”

“The evening has not progressed far, so I would suggest that we further our investigation tonight, at one of those two locations. I would suggest the casino. I believe these places stay open quite late, so we should have little trouble gaining entry,” – Lightbringer does not realise that he may be showing his naivety with such a comment – “and if we investigate Norn’s home at night, we may be mistaken for thieves. But is not my decision alone to make – what do the rest of you think?”

"I would prefer to check out the Throw of Dice, though I am a halfling sneaking is not really my forte" Nox says with a smile "I am not opposed to going this route alone, but I would fail to aquire much information, in places such as this halfling are often accused of cheating expecially when I wear a holy symbol of Olladra you know fortune favors 'my' throw of the dice....heh to think the irony a preist of Olladra with no luck in games of chance." With this said Nox laughs heartily and takes another sip of his flagon, then offers it to Lightbringer.

Listen checks please. If you get 15 or more:

Spoiler:
You pick up stray words from a conversation at one of the other tables: "..... Yeah, really ripped the place apart, so I hear. A couple of trolls or something, killed a load of the worshippers there. Church of the Flame, or something, in Lower Dura somewhere - Rattlebones, I think. Daask, they reckon....."

By the way, the rest of you need to decide among yourselves what to do next.

Ezreal snorts at Lightbringer's comment, "You mean we might be taken by thieves! By all means we should investigate Norn's place, but wandering around in such a desperate community after dark is asking for trouble. I'm with Throw of the Dice for tonight."

Runzyl nodded in agreement with Ezreal. "Yes, we should see about this casino. It seems like a place we could go that would not draw much attention." He glanced around at his companions, continuing to chew his food.

Natural 1 on the Listen check. No spoilers for me. I guess Runzyl can't hear through the sounds of his own chewing.

OK, looks like the majority decision then is to go to the casino. Not heard from Trose or Janosz, but I'll assume they agree if I don't hear in the next few hours.

"The casino it is, then. But how will we get in? Most gambling dens require some form of membership, don't they?" Janosz glances around at his companions. What kind of place could that be, if this group wouldn't attract attention?

Rolled an 11 - that gives me a Listen 19.

Not really - this fantasy universe isn't highly regulated like gambling in the real world.

Everyone finishes their meals and decides to head back out to Menthis. Picking up a couple of skycoaches from the rank outside the restaurant (and continuing their efforts to keep the skycoach drivers in Sharn employed) the group fly across the city as the sun sets behind the towers of Dura and everbright lanterns begin to shine up in the higher levels of the city. Deep shadows are thrown in the canyons between the different districts.

The coaches spiral down towards Downstairs. Menthis has something of a reputation for depravity and moral lassitude, mainly due to the presence of the red light districts in its (fittingly) lower parts. Downstairs borders some of these areas, but mainly concentrates on the vice of alcoholic consumption. A lively area of bars, pubs and taverns, it is still relatively early – things won’t really get going until the sun has been long gone, when the crowds will throng and the punch-ups begin. However, the hostelries are nevertheless opening up, and a few early punters – probably having a swift one after work – are in evidence, laughing and chatting in small groups as they sit on barstools and sip their beverages. Bored-looking bouncers stand in doorways practicing their intimidating looks, while the odd bar band rehearses before they begin the early set. As darkness falls, the illusion spell signage which advertise some of the more up-market establishments begin to glow brightly.

The Throw of the Dice sign is particularly striking. Above the lintel of the door is the image of an improbably endowed elf woman in a low-cut dress. She leans forward to throw her dice (nearly falling out of her bodice in the process) and then claps her hands in delight, bouncing up and down in her enthusiasm. She is then replaced with the words “The Throw of the Dice” in bold red letters, and underneath in smaller script “Tonight could be your LUCKY night!” The sequence then repeats, over and over.

Stepping inside the double doors, the party finds itself in a small lobby. Another set of double doors at the far end, which are open, lead into the main casino area. Through them can be seen various gaming tables where an evident hardcore of gamblers are playing dice or cards, overseen by croupiers of various races. Closer to hand in the lobby is a booth containing the hat-check girl, a pretty halfling wearing an elegant dress. Also present are the door security, a shifter who manages to look extremely feral even in a business suit and a heavily muscled dwarf almost as wide as he is high. They immediately take notice as six armed and armoured strangers stroll in, standing up straight from where they were leaning on the hat-check counter and chatting with the girl. Adopting their professional glower, they subtly interpose themselves between the party and the interior of the casino.

The halfling girl clears her throat slightly nervously and then smiles. “Can I take your cloaks, gentlemen?” she says brightly. “And your weapons,” she adds, pointedly.

“Who are these people, boys?” says a gravely voice. Looking round, the party spots a halfling man standing in the doorway leading into the casino. He wears a set of dun leather trousers and a Talenta jerkin of brightly woven thread which shows off the bulging muscles in his arms. His body seems to be covered in twisting blue tattoos, even across the pate of his shaven head, while large gold rings and necklaces glitter on his hands and around his thick neck. He folds his arms and stares, waiting impatiently for an answer.

Oh yes, forgot - another 100xp each for the info gathering and stuff.

Spoiler for Nox:

Spoiler:
The halfling man is sporting a sort of urban barbarian look called "dessik" (a Halfling word loosely translatable as "bandit"), based on a modified version of traditional Talenta dress and popular with some halflings. It's associated with a subculture of rebellion and criminality - kind of a "gangsta halfling". How you feel about that as a real Talenta tribesman is up to you.

Runzyl scowls as he looks to his companions when the halfling requests their weapons. He appears very reluctant to surrender his arms and waits to see if one of his companions will persuade the halfling to allow them in.

The halfling man notices Runzyl reluctance and tenses. He says in a very low voice, "You got a problem, nateg*?" The bouncers seem to ready themselves for action too, becoming watchful and carefully eyeing up the capabilities of the group.

*For those that speak Halfling:

Spoiler:
nateg - a type of burrowing rodent on the Talenta plains; common slang for in Talenta Halfling for "runt", "weed" or similar perjorative term

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"No, no, not any problems at all. Here you go, miss". Janosz unstraps his weapons bundle and hands it over to the female halfling. "Seriously, fellas", he says, looking meaningfully at his companions, "hand the tools over".

I have a lot of really big weapons - greatclub, longbow, arrows - so I carry them around in a tied-together canvas wrap on my back. The wrap weighs almost 20 pounds; hopefully the little girl doesn't just topple over... With a little luck, the doormen won't object to my kukri.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Ezreal offers up his club immediately, but adds as he does so, "Excuse us please- Mr Ascorthtir I presume? We aren't here to cause any trouble. We are here because it seems and a friend or associate of yours appears to be in serious trouble and you might be able to help us save him. Do you know an inquisitive named Heris?"

"And the big knife too, ugly," says the halfling to Janosz. His gaze turns to Ezreal. "What do you want with the boss?"

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

With a sad face, Janosz gives his kukri to the coat-checker. "Please don't lose it", he quietly implores the female halfling. "While this knife may look rather ordinary, it is not. It is my coming-of-age blade - I gutted my first bog-lizard with it, as well as my first orc. It means a lot to me. Thank you". He reluctantly lets go of it and then pulls back a little, content to let Ezreal and the others do the talking. Instead, he studies the rude halfling's profusion of tattoos, trying to get an understanding of which House he might belong to.

Runzyl, upon seeing his companions surrender their arms, sighs heavily as he unshoulders his double blade and hands if gingerly over to the doorman, focusing a steely gaze on him that says 'Do not lose this' without actually speaking a word.

The halfling scowls as Runzyl tries to hand him his blade. "Give it to Trini, it's what she's here for," he snarls. The girl smiles and, after manhandling Janosz's weapons bundle and kukri into her booth, smiles nervously and puts out her hands to take the double scimitar.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

When he realizes he has mistaken a middle man for the boss, Ezreal clears his throat and continues a bit uncomfortably, "Ah well then, excuse me. It seems that an old friend of your boss has gotten himself into some trouble. We were contracted this morning to pick up the case this inquisitive had been working and thought it would be appropriate to pass along word to Mr Ascorthtir as we aren't aware of any direct family or friends... If they have been in contact that could only help to develop our case, but at the very least it seemed likely that your boss would want to know."

The mage leaves off deliberately vague, yet feeling he's given away too much already to the hired muscle.

Ezreal's favorite skill check - Diplomacy, please. Don't forget the aid another action, the rest of you - except possibly for Runzyl, as he already doesn't like you.

NPC'ing Trose for the moment.

Trose reluctantly hands over his weapons, his distrust evident. Rolled a 2 + 6 = 8 on his assist roll, not much help there.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Hey - I rolled a 13. With my -1 Cha modifier, that gives me a 12, so my Aid Another check succeeded.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Diplomacy: (4 + 0 = 4)
No amount of assisting is going to help that.
Well I guess we could hit 10 if Lightbringer and Nox succeed. At least I'll be out of the offensive and into the just plain failure range.

Nox hands over his weapon and shield, while staring at the doorman with a scowl. He then turns to Trini "Please keep a watchful eye on these for me I would be sorely dissappointed if our dessik freind here decided he wanted to place his hands on my things, though I dont expect him to."
aid another roll:16+0=16, sry about not posting for a couple of days I have been kind of busy

No probs - I assume people will be away from time to time.

The girl tries and fails to suppress a giggle as Nox takes a dig at the halfling man, and then smiles coquettishly.

NPC'ing Lightbringer - assist roll = 12. Just crept over that DC.... Lightbringer hands over his massive sword and bow. "Careful," he warns the girl, "They are heavy."

The tattooed halfling grunts and reluctantly say, "I'll see if he wants to see you - wait here." With a final glare at Runzyl, he heads into the casino.

After a few minutes he returns. "Follow me." He leads the party through the casino to a door marked 'Private'. Opening it, a short corridor leads to another door. He opens it, and steps to one side, ushering the group in, finally stepping in and closing the door behind him after the last person enters. He then takes position by the door, arms folded.

Inside is a large office: a desk (halfling sized), Talenta items (masks, pottery and statuary) sitting in corners or dotting the walls. A window seems to look in over the casino, but as you could not see one on the other side you assume it is probably a two-way mirror.

Try an Appraise check. If you get 15 or more:

Spoiler:
Some of these items in here look like fairly valuable collectors items.

Another halfling man stands by the mirror. Wearing a conservative dark business suit, he has curly red hair and a boyish, rosy apple-cheeks. The effect is vaguely cherubic and child-like - except for his eyes, which assess the party coldly from a face as expressionless as the masks on the wall.

His voice is surprisingly deep. "Well, this had better be good."

hp 73 of 156; AC 23 (29); Fort +15, Ref +8, Will +13 Warforged Paladin 9 / Exorcist of the Silver Flame 4; Effects: Bless, Airwalk, Weapon of Awe, Ironskin, Bull’s Strength

At his first glance at the casino, Lightbringer decides that he doesn’t think much of the place, although the animated sign does little for him. Places like this … designed simply to take people’s money away – and they are totally legal.

He is though, somewhat approving that they at least have the sense to take people’s weapons at the door, and gives his own up without complaint or comment. He has faith that he will not need them here. And if he does … well, his fists are almost as good as his sword, and his faith is strong with or without the blade.

Reaching the office, Lightbringer answers the Halfling. “I am afraid it is not good news that we bear. We seek Jendry – you are he? Jendry, who is a friend of the inquisitive Heris?

“We have recently become involved in an investigating a case of a missing person that Heris was also following, only now our investigation has widened to include seeking Heris as well – it appears to us that in the course of his own investigation, Heris drew the attention of a group of base criminals known as Daask, and has also disappeared. We fear he is possibly deceased.”

Lightbringer pauses, to judge Jendry’s reaction, and allow any of his friends to speak.

Failed appraise check

"Yes, I'm Jendry."

As Lightbringer explains about the likely death of Heris, Jendry's composure cracks. His jaw clenches, and he abruptly turns his back on the party to stare through the window into the casino interior, his fists tightly balled. His henchman at the door shifts uncomfortably, unsure how to react.

There is a long pause. Eventually, without turning back to face the other occupants of the room, Jendry says slowly in a quiet, even voice, "Tell me everything you know."

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Hooray! I made the Appraise check! Does this call for a Sense Motive roll, as Jendry could just be bluffing in order to make us give him information?

Runzyl crosses his arms over his chest and stands stock-straight just inside the doorway to the office as the conversation continues, his eyes constantly shifting between the doorman and Jendry, watching for any sign of budding hostility. His brow tightly knit in stern composure, he appears to show contempt for the casino as a whole and particularly the doormen who snubbed him earlier.

Lightbringer looks at his companions before plunging on with his usual honesty.

He begins telling Jendry all the facts of the case, beginning with last night in The Spear, intending to leave out only the contents of Heris’ notes, simply summing up that some found notes in Heris’ rooms led the group to Jendry.

Or at least this is the story he tells unless one of his companions interjects…

Jendry seems to calm down as Lightbringer explains the situation. He turns back to face the group as the warforged speaks; at first his face is full of fury, but eventually his expression becomes merely sullen as he begins to digest the information. Lightbringer concludes his tale and Jendry, looking thoughtful, walks back and slumps behind his desk. He suddenly slams his hand down on the desktop and snarls, “Gods, what a f!@%ing idiot! Why didn’t he come to me when he knew Daask were involved? No brains!” He stares moodily into space for a moment, then turns his gaze to the party.

“So that was you guys in the Bazaar last night, huh?” he grunts, then smiles sourly. “Well you’ve sure stirred up our furry friends. There’s word that out they are hunting for you, especially you -” he nods towards Lightbringer “- and you,” indicating Runzyl. “Nothing personal, I suspect, but you two are the most distinctive and easy to track down. Daask are angry, and that makes them vicious. Or more so, anyway. You all need to be careful”

“As for Heris.” Jendry pauses again, and then sighs. “I guess he’s dead – overreached once too often. I don’t know how he got mixed up with House Cannith, or what this artificer has to do with Daask. But I think I can help you. Having their boys butchered almost on their home turf will be a big deal for Daask, so who this guy was with the gnolls should be fairly easy to find out now. Sardu,” he says to his tattooed henchman, “Put out the word, I want that guy found.” Sardu nods and heads out the door.

Turning back to the party, Jendry mutters darkly, “He won’t stay hidden for long.” He sighs again, and runs his hand across his head thoughtfully. “This cries out for dasor iret*, but we have to be practical. If halflings sort this out it’ll spark another turf war and we don’t need another one of those right now.” He fixes the party with a calculating look. “You can handle yourselves in a fight, that’s pretty clear. You need this piece of shit for your investigation, and I want to get to the people who hurt Heris. I think we have an interest in common right now. I’ll find you the guy, you go in and get him. You get your information, I get my revenge. Do we have a deal?”

As Jendry spoke he confirmed what Ezreal already knew to be true. They were marked and being seriously hunted for the bloodbath in the tavern last night. Sharn was a large city, but it was only a matter of time before they were spotted by a Daask lookout or informant. Mentally ticking off all the districts they could have been spotted in since leaving the tavern, the mage frowned in concern. Better to be on the offensive then, perhaps. Turn the tables on that spineless wretch who ran out the back door at the first sign of trouble. As Jendry continued, Ezreal began to make his own plans. He was going to need to figure out where Daask held sway in this city that was so new to him. Then there was the matter of lodging... Bumbling about the city wounded and looking for succor- this could not happen again. What remained of the substantial gash in his arm ached as he allowed his thoughts to linger on it, but enough of that. He would need to reclaim his belongings from the room he had been renting near Morgrave. Something a little more secure would be in order to avoid bringing any future engagements home to the University. Once the halfling finished, Ezreal snapped back to the conversation at hand...

With a slow and serious nod while meeting Jendry's eyes, Ezreal confirms, quietly but with sincerity, "We do indeed. Wherever he may be now, he is certainly enjoying his last evening unpunished for the part he played in all of this. Point us in his direction and he is as good as yours."

Jendry gives Ezreal a thin smile. "I like your style - a can-do attitude."

Suddenly, Trose stifles an unanticipated yawn. The realization of his own exhaustion washes over him, and he contemplates just how out of it he must have seemed to his companions for the last few hours.

"I'm sorry, Master Jendry, I am just realizing how much of a strain this day has been on me," he says diplomatically, trying to undo his faux pas.

If this is the type of casino with actual lodgings, I will ask about securing a room, otherwise, I will ask for a nearby "friendly" (read Boromar operated) inn.

"All this mucking about in mystery and murder has left my bones begging for a hot bath and a warm bed. And if we are hunted, I have no urgent reason to rush off to where I might be expected."

You actually have lodgings in the House Tharashk enclave in Clifftop, you and Janosz. You can probably find temporary accommodation nearby if you want it. However, it will not be free.

Oh yes, I realize. But as I said, if we are being hunted, I'd rather not go home right now... Not that I expect trouble in the Enclave, but oh say, sometime after breakfast, with someone shadowing me as I leave, far too easy to fall off a lift
