The groaning, grinding noise stops and the ceiling begins to lift. The stones blocking the two doorways also rise up. The way onward is open.

12,800xp each.

Level up!

"Nice work, y'alls. I'll take the lead." Janosz hefts his bow and quietly pads down the corridor, briefly pausing to give the battered corpse of the spellcaster a parting kick.

I'll leave Gelb at the level he's at and wait to level up when we're reunited with the bone knight.

Beyond is another corridor carved from the rock. On either side are doors. These are reinforced with metal bands and have small hatches at roughly chest height for a human, and look distinctly like cell doors in a jail.

"Hello?"

Gelb's tentative greeting echoes down the hall. There is no response.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Looks like we'll have to put in some actual work, Gelb." Janosz walks to the nearest cell om the left and peers through the slot in the door.

Most of the cells seem to be empty of anything except dust. The odd one has a skeleton chained to a wall, mostly in a state of advanced disarticulation. But, further down the line, Janosz peers through and finds someone who appears, superficially, to be alive - a dwarf, bruised, dishevelled and stripped to nothing more than his loincloth, hanging by his arms and with head bowed. As Janosz looks in, the dwarf growls, "Come to torment me some more, hag?"

"Probably another trap," Gelb quips.

"Can you send an arrow thru the slot and put him out of his 'misery'?" Gelb asks in a mocking tone to Janosz.

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

"Even in this state, it'll take more than an arrow to kill me, hag. We both know that's why you enjoy this."

When you said he would be hanging around with nothing better to do, I did not take it nearly this literally.

Gil peers in the door and draws back to consult with the wizard. Whispering, "Apparently a dwarven prisoner. Are you able to pierce any illusions they might have on him?"

Maybe True Seeing should be my next advanced learning spell...

"I know my friend is ugly but there's no need to flatter him."

Perception vs traps: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (15) + 17 = 32.

Sense motive vs dwarf: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27.

Gelb:

Spoiler:
You detect that there seems to be an antimagic field centred on the dwarf's cell. However, the dwarf himself is either a very good actor or on the level.

Gil wrote:

He's lucky it's just his arms.

"You're good," Gelb continues talking to the dwarf. "Maybe as good as me but you can't hide the field of dead magic in this room."

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

I am assuming i see little through the small slot, plus Hags can alter their appearance.

"Cease your parlor tricks and fight me, hag. Or have you no faith in your Keeper?"

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"We just killed the hag back in the previous room. Want to see the body?"

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Aggressive little fellow, isn't he? Not sure he'll fit in...

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

The dwarf falters a bit, then asks, "Who's 'we'? You don't sound like a Vassal and I don't know why anyone else'd be down here."

"You're right we're not Vassals, so we'll leave you to hang around while we proceed with our mission. Enjoy the view."

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Don't be an a~&!&@*, Gelb. What's a vassal, anyway?"

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

"Vassals? Faithful of the Sovereign Host... Where are you from? We came down here to kill a creature that preyed upon the weak and poor, but I was separated from the rest of my team by a trap and imprisoned. If you won't free me, could you at least give me some real food? Do you have any?"

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"I'll let ya out. Did the hag have keys?"

"We're from the future, sent back in time, and right what once went wr..."

"Oh for crying out loud! Why are we still talking to him? Throw him some bones to gnaw, leave him, and let's get on with the mission."

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

"Either the hag or one of its allies. What mission brings you down here, if you killed the hag?"

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"We're looking for used dwarf diapers; they fetch an amazing price in goblin fetish stores." Janosz pulls the door open and peers inside. "Actually, we're looking for Gath. Have you seen him?"

Perception 11+24=35 to spot traps within the cell.

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

DM, would I know of Gath?

"Gath? Not that I am aware of. The hag was the first being I met that spoke intelligibly. I haven't really eaten enough to shit, so you're out of luck on the used diapers." The dwarf lets out a sound, half-chuckle and half cough.

You'd know about Gath - everyone does - but he hasn't taken an interest in you or come to see you.

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

"I haven't seen Gath in here, I've only heard stories. We didn't come in here for him, only for the minions that venture out of the City of the Dead to prey. Once you let me out, maybe you could help me find my stuff? It's pretty heavy, so I doubt the hag took it far."

Janosz identifies no traps on the door. However, he notices the door is securely locked.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Does it have a keyhole? Combination lock?

79/79 hp, 0 nonlethal; Effects: ; Perception +16, vs traps +20; Guise: Non-descript male gambler

"What have we here, Janosz?" Gil moves forward to study the lock.

We checked the hag's body for "other items of interest" but didn't find a key. I don't know that we did for the battered mage's body.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Any levers by the entrance or exit? Maybe there is a control room further into the complex?

Looks like a keyhole. In the interests of continuity, you found some keys on the hag.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Aha!"

*jangles keyring*

Janosz walks back to the dwarf's cell and unlocks the door.

But before I do that, I check the corridor for traps, just in case the floor falls way if you use the wrong key. Perception 11+24=35.

The floor looks solid enough, and the lock looks like an ordinary lock.

The door swings open. Inside is the dwarf, still chained up. Using another key unlocks his manacles and he collapses to the floor, rubbing his wrists.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Ezreal follows Janosz into the cell and thoroughly examines the prisoner for telltale magical auras. "Hmm. No signs of illusion. Could still be a shapechanger however." He frowns while looking the dwarf over. "Better safe than sorry." Ezreal draws his scrollcase and pulling the cord begins reciting from a short scroll. After another brief examination he relaxes somewhat, "No. This is his true form. Release him."

Burn the discern shapechanger scroll I've been carrying for 3-4 years.
Also Gil should take the scroll of dimension door (CL10) we just looted since I prepare it daily. Better that two of us have an escape clause.
Take one of the Globe of Invulnerability Scrolls while we're at it. I have 2.
Let me know you have marked them and I'll delete them off my sheet.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

There's an antimagic filed inside the cell, so we'll need to do the examination in the corridor. I'll pull him out there if he can't walk.

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

if i can walk under my own power, i will. Also, once out of the antimagic, are my spells accessible? Will i need to pray an hour to prepare them?

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Ok. Let's pretend I noticed that and did the above in the hallway.

In order to prepare spells you need your holy symbol and to be able to pray for an hour. Right now you don't have your holy symbol.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Doesn't his Worldly Focus feat eliminate the need for his holy symbol?

Once Ezreal gives the word, Janosz lets the dwarf go. "We're in a bit of a pickle", he mutters to the wizard. "We can't just let him find his way out - he'll get lost and eaten along the way. And we can't really bring him with us either..." He nods meaningfully at the ex-prisoner's state of abuse and undress.

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

yeah, the Sovereign Host is all around us, in all things. Including whichever pebble i need to use as a holy symbol.

"If i can get my equipment back, some time to pray... i can help you during your time in this dark place. I have companions who died in here, and some i dont know if they got out. Since you habent mentioned anyone else, i take it you havent seen any of them?"

Done and done.

No, actually it doesn't. You can cast spells that require a divine focus without said focus. It doesn't say you don't need a holy symbol in order to pray for your spells. That said...

Tossed in another cell, the group find Kazadar's equipment.

Haste, Divine Power, Air Walk, Death Ward Dwarf Fighter 1 / Cleric 8 / Sovereign Speaker 3; HP 87/116

Unless one of the others stops him, Kazadar will try to get to his stuff.

in the interest of pbp expediency i am going for it, but if the others want to search for traps or something Kazadar will stop

If the door is locked, he will place his hands on the wood of the door around the lock and concentrate a moment.

Or Janosz can use another key.

It's all yours. After the recent events of the other Eberron game, I'm laying off the slaughter of helpless PCs.

"Could one of you charitable souls help me put this armor on?" the dwarf asks, putting on his normal clothes before strapping the first pieces of armor on. Even though it is made of very light material, each of the twenty or more pieces is very thick, making it slightly heavier than most heavy armor. You get the impression that if it were made of steel, it would weigh at least as much as an average human.

He inventories his equipment, checking to see if the hag stole anything. For later, he sets aside a heavy metal shield boasting prominently the octagram of the Sovereign Host, and a heavy warhammer of a strange alloy, purplish in hue.

The dwarf kneels, facing the symbol on the shield, and bows his head. "Glorious Host, I offer my unending gratitude in sending these humans to rescue me, your faithful servant. I ask that your fortune finds us along our path, and that my companions may be found..."

he will keep praying for an hour unless disturbed.
