Janosz steps forward uncertainly, but it seems Gelb has done his work right. No more hurricanes blast down the corridor and he moves along with increasing confidence. He eventually finds the way blocked by a stone door.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Oh, for f#&~'s sake. And this thing will be trapped too, of course." Janosz peers at the door and its immediate surroundings, but does not touch it.

Perception 12+23=35. Someone else will have to detect magic and then disable the inevitable trap.

To Gelb, "Come on. I have obviously lost the knack to disable them, but I can still look for traps."

Aid another rolls, if Gelb prefers to be primary

"I'll let you have the glory," Gelb answers. "Then I'll check your work."

Heh, nice. She rolls her eyes. "Very well."

I guess mine aren't aid rolls, then. Care to make some aid rolls?

This time, the blades in the walls by the door are quite easy to disarm.

No need.

Oh, and 1,066xp each for this and the other trap.

Janosz stares at the back of Gelb's head, idly flipping his warhammer and measuring swing arcs and patterns of blood splatter. As Gil announces that the door has been secured, he shakes it off and walks up towards her. "Excellent. Is the door locked?"

If no traps are found, she will try to determine how to open the door and whether it is locked. If it is,

Gil finds no more traps. The door also seems to be unlocked.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"All right. Stand back, y'alls, and I'll open it." Janosz takes a deep breath before carefully cracking the door open.

Nevharath mirrors Janosz's deep inhalation, his mind subconsciously imagining the air entering the lungs, oxygenating his blood, and the blood traveling to his muscles.

This'll need a modicum of preparation.

R.I.P. Janosz, we hardly knew ye. ;)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Hardly knew him - this has been going on for six years. AND NOW IT STOPS!

Continue to bear with me, though I've maybe got more time on my hands so not much longer.

That's ok. I'm expecting a sphere of annihilation moment ala Tomb of Horrors any time now.

I had the encounter ready, but I wasn't happy with it - it was unworthy of you. So a little more tweaking.

What an odd mix of feeling honored and terrified, all at once.

"Careful Janosz."

As an aside to Gil he mutters, "It strikes me that I never fully appreciated having a near suicidal elf around for this type of thing until now."

Janosz nudges the door open. Beyond is a long, dimly-lit hall, its roof supported by two rows of pillars. The light is provided by two large fire bowls that flicker eerily at the far end. Between them, crucified, is a ten-foot tall golden-skinned angel. She is naked, pinned to the wall though arms, legs and wings with iron spikes that drip red with blood. Her head lolls and she seems unconscious, only help upright by the cruel pitons rammed through her flesh.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Um, so lemme explain..." Janosz looks down the hall again. "Or, just take a look for yourselves."

"So, Ez, these things are immortal, right? So it could conceivably still be alive?"

"I miss him, too. He was refreshingly straightforward."

Nevharath looks at the angel for signs of life. (notably, breathing, which outsiders do) He doesn't, however, approach closer.

It is a bit hard to tell, but there seem to be vital signs.

"Sad to have my paranoia developed to the point where I see a tormented angel and I wonder if it can be trusted or if it's been converted to evil. How would we know?"

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Magic!", Janosz whipers theatrically. "Before we get that, though, we gotta check everything in here for traps. This whole thing seems designed to have rescuers rush forward and fall into something unpleasant."

Male Kalashtar Psychic Warrior 6 / War Mind 5

"There appears to be signs of life, from this distance. Knowing the evil of our enemy, I concur with Janosz. Nevertheless, we should hurry, lest the light be extinguished."

"She probably is the trap," Gelb warns. "We should ignore her and continue on our way."

Anyone want to use detect magic before we proceed.

"Very wise..." Gil begins using detect magic and mundane perception to search for surprises and traps.

Ezreal shakes his head. "I'm sorry to say I have neglected any useful divination in favor of fire and explosions today. Give me just a moment to scan for auras while you look for traps. Once we are clear Rodergo might lay a light touch of healing on our potential angel so that we can at least learn something."

Detect Magic

Ezreal and Gil cast their cantrips but swiftly realises that the angel is well out of the range of detection. They would have to enter the room and move well up it in order to identify any auras for the angel.

In case you are wondering, the room is about 120-130' long and about 50' wide. It has two rows of pillars running up its length.

My intent was to study the immediate area looking for a safe route to reach the angel. I'll leave the apparent victim to Ez.

You detect to auras within range. You also detect no traps.

Duh, I bet that was confusing. You detect no auras within range.

"Well, I see no traps mundane or magical. Shall we move in?"

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Might as well. I'll go first - stay behind me." Janosz gingerly steps into the room and starts looking behind the closest pillars.

I'll move about 30' into the room. Perception 11+23=34.

Gelb stays behind, short sword and wand ready.

OK, here is a map. You are entering through the corridor at the bottom. What exactly are you doing?

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Map's blocked.

Sorry, try now.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

I was thinking of moving to O27 and look down the hallway towards the flaming bowls, then moving to J27 and repeating. I'm looking for hidden monsters or traps.

Janosz moves in cautiously he moves to take cover behind a pillar but stops as he notices a tiny pressure plate, just where someone would expect to stand if performing exactly that manoeuvre. As he pauses, a arrow zips towards him.

Make another Perception check, DC 34 - if you fail you are surprised.
1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 10 - 2 = 17 to hit, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Everyone, roll initiative and please place yourselves on the map. So far Janosz is the only one in the room, so the rest of you will be in the corridor somewhere.

Spoiler:
It looks like no angel you have ever read about or heard of.

Rod's in M33. His initiative is 11+2=13.

Given that AG is somewhat incapacitated, could someone choose a spot for Gil?
