happy thanksgiving everyone.

Grand Lodge

You know- Gral Muut isn't someone we are trying to trick. He was a contact of Grannt's. So he would probably have told you what you wanted based on that connection- maybe with some coin to go along with it. If Grannt was a friend of his letting him know you are following up on one of his last cases might be worth something.

You guys are coming to same place behind us, right? You can take that tack.

Male Kalashtar Psychic Warrior 6 / War Mind 5

yeah i got nothin. i rarely play "face" characters because im just not good at it haha

70/70 hp; Effects: None; 120915 xp after Manfred

Yeah, apparently, I'm not much good at it, either.

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

I think that trying that would make him even more suspicious.
Maybe you guys can turn invisible and follow him to see where he goes?

Looking for one or two players for my 4e Dark Sun campaign - anyone interested?

M Human

hmm i really like dark sun (been awhile since i read the novels, havent played it before) and i dont know 4e at all. i could give it a try though. i love thrikreen, is that a player option? or elan?

The Exchange

No peeking, please Rarely Accountant 2/Auditor 4/Waster 30

Elan - no. Thri'kreen, definitely (though we have one already). Do you have any 4e rule books? If not, I can create you a character.

M Human

i think i might have the basic books on a hard drive somewhere, i will check when i get off of work proper. are there specific darksun ones? also, are psionic classes allowed? I remember them being somewhat rare in the books, but if i remember correctly sorcerors were even more rare..?

M Human

also, are there certain roles that the party is deficient in? i looked at the Characters tab of your campaign but I am not sure which characters aren't with the party anymore.

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

They said we need a "leader;" i.e. a healer; the only leader type we have is a bard.

I'm kinda......shaky on 4e, but I know Dark Sun.....pretty good.
Like, I don't remember all the names of stuff/cities/heroes/villains, but I get the gist.

M Human

hmm, i have been wanting to play a druid or ranger type for awhile. if i remember correctly, rangers are common among ThriKreen but Druids are somewhat rare. But a druid has better healing i assume.

On the leader part, i try not to play leader types in RPGs. I mean, i can build a Bluff/Diplomacy Bonus Machine just fine but actually determining what i would say to really persuade someone non-magically is out of my zone. My only persuasive skill is logic hahaha.

I am in the military and the only leadership i am really used to using is telling someone to do something and having them do it, which doesnt really work in a party without a rank structure haha

M Human

and as far as dark sun goes i read the books years ago, i just remember sorceror kings are bad, some magic users turn the land to waste to cast spells, some dragon eats obsidian orbs to transform and the obsidian orbs are eggs for something like a Shadow creature. and the dwarves are much cooler and Muls are kinda cool too.

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"Leader" is just 4e lingo for "class role."

They're considered important in 4e.

Leaders-cleric, warlord, they heal and inspire others.

Defender-fighter, paladin, they are front line combatants

Striker-ranger, rogue, warlock, they do large amounts of damage to one target.

Controller-wizard, they deal with a large amount of enemies at one time.

M Human

hmm i also remember a badass character in the books i might not mind emulating. some dwarf cleric of the sun who would burn the crap out of stuff

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

I will call him "MINIME."

peace out; I gotta crash.

See y'all in a couplea days.

I'd probably prefer if you didn't play a thri'kreen, mainly for the sake of the existing thri'kreen in the party. They are weird from a roleplaying perspective so it might steal some thunder. The main thing is - do you have some 4e books? If you don't, I can make you up a character and you can probably buy a 4e PHB second-hand so you can get the hang of combat, powers and so on. But I need a decision - the plot is about to move on.

As for playing a cleric, divine magic is forbidden in DS. The DS novels play with that, but from a gaming perspective it's out of bounds. Heathy's right in that we need a leader (healer), but a good fit with the party might be a warlord. They "heal" but through encouragement and psychology, rather than divine magic. Plus they get powers which improve the effectiveness of other characters in combat, especially melee types like we have. A dwarf warlord would be cool.

M Human

i dont have the books, and as i am in korea i dont really have a place to get physical copies secondhand. i can look into buying pdfs though. it might be best if you put together the character though as i dont know the rules at all.

what are the stipulations on a druid? altogether forbidden?

M Human

found the pdfs i need online but itll probably be tomorrow before i can actually get eyes on them.

my character ideas (especially if thrikreen is to be avoided):

druid if permitted (assuming they can heal and arent too "divine" for the setting, is "primal" allowed?). I was thinking something Sun- or Desert-themed

uhhh, thats about it. all my other ideas were more or less thrikreen.

The Exchange

A druid isn't a healer in 4e, fundamentally. They de-emphasised healing and specified more of the wild-shaping. They are permitted in DS, but really their schtick is more of a wizard's, and we've got one of those.

If it's OK with you, I'll knock you up a dwarf warlord. Once you get your hands on the pdfs, you can have much more of a good idea about what character you want to play on an ongoing basis. Also, shall we retire to the DS game discussion thread?

So, with the +3 weapon penetrating DR silver and cold iron, and +4 penetrating adamantine.... since the core rules don't make assumptions for non-core materials (like byeshk), do I correctly assume that +4 will penetrate that as well? Since +5 penetrates alignment-based DR, I presume +4 beats all materials.

I guess so.

A couple of worries about our upcoming meeting. My plan puts us in a tight formation. One or two AoE spells is gonna make us feel it. Also, I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a parley session otherwise our buffs will run out.

Does blessing of fervor affect psionics? If it does, then Nevharath has the option to extend any 1st or 2nd level powers.

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

d20pfsrd.com is my best friend.

I'd say not; unless a 2nd level or lower psionic power is the same as a spell.

That's the thing. 3.5e had transparency between psionics and magic. Each could affect the other. However, Paizo does not have psionic rules, yet. Which is why I'm wondering if blessing of fervor can affect psionics.

M Human

the 3PP Psionics Rules from which i drew Nevharath's class, prestige class, powers, etc. from also has a clause for magic-psionics transparency:

Spoilered for length, or click the above link:

Combining Psionic and Magical Effects

The default rule for the interaction of psionics and magic is simple: powers interact with spells and spells interact with powers in the same way a spell or normal spell-like ability interacts with another spell or spell-like ability. This is known as psionics–magic transparency.

Psionics–Magic Transparency: Though not explicitly called out in the spell descriptions or magic item descriptions, spells, spell-like abilities, and magic items that could potentially affect psionics do affect psionics. When the rule about psionics–magic transparency is in effect, it has the following ramifications.

Spell resistance is effective against powers, using the same mechanics. Likewise, power resistance is effective against spells, using the same mechanics as spell resistance. If a creature has one kind of resistance, it is assumed to have the other. (The effects have similar ends despite having been brought about by different means.)

All spells that dispel magic have equal effect against powers of the same level using the same mechanics, and vice versa.

The spell detect magic detects powers, their number, and their strength and location within 3 rounds (though a Spellcraft check is necessary to identify the discipline of the psionic aura), while detect psionics detects spells, their number, and their strength and location within 3 rounds (though a Spellcraft check is necessary to identify the school of magic).

Dead magic areas are also dead psionics areas.

Unless specifically mentioned in a power’s description, a power cannot be counterspelled when it is being manifested, nor can powers be used to counterspell a spell as it is being cast. Unless specifically stated otherwise, feats such as metamagic feats that specifically affect spells do not affect powers, and feats such as metapsionic feats that specifically affect powers do not affect spells.

Powers or psionic effects usually work as described no matter how many other powers, psionic effects, spells, or magical effects happen to be operating in the same area or on the same recipient. Except in special cases, a power does not affect the way another power or spell operates. Whenever a power has a specific effect on other powers or spells, the power description explains the effect (and vice versa for spells that affect powers). Several other general rules apply when powers, spells, magical effects, or psionic effects operate in the same place. powers that provide bonuses or penalties on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and other attributes usually do not stack with themselves. More generally, two bonuses of the same type don’t stack even if they come from different powers, or one from a power and one from a spell. You use whichever bonus gives you the better result.

Anything that you see me manifest (cast) has an equivalent spell level.

  • 1 PP (power point) = 1st level
  • 3 PP = 2nd level
  • 5 PP = 3rd level
  • 7 PP = 4th level
  • 9 PP = 5th level
  • 11 PP = 6th level
  • and so forth...

Nevharath, as a Psychic Warrior / War Mind, does not gain access to Powers above 6th level equivalent, however he can spend as many points on a power as he has manifester levels. In doing so, the effect is considered a higher level power for cases like Sphere of Invulnerability or Spell Turning that use levels to determine effects. For instance, his Call Weaponry power is a first level power, costing 1 PP. But he spent 8 PP to augment it, making it 9 PP total - a 5th level spell equivalent. This difference in cost and equivalent spell level allowed him to call a +2 weapon vice a masterwork weapon. At level 13 he will be able to spend 13 PP on the power to call a +3 weapon.
