The world of Faerun has been changing considerably since after the Time of Troubles. Gods die and gods come back from the dead, for example Bhaal the once lord of Murder was killed in the Time of Troubles and Bane came back from the dead, emerging as far more powerful of a God than he was before.

New towns have been built and great dark forces have been riding. Orc bandit activity has increased and most wild humanoids appear to have gone quiet. Too quiet for the town's people to relax.

On the 26th of Kythorn the entire group of five meet up and were hired on as caravan guards travelling from Nashkel to Beregost where you heard of the strange dissappearences of children in the town and the increased orc raids on the road towards the town. You all set off at first light together.

Smerg:

You have realised the decrease in wild humanoids far more than anyone else. You and your people feared that they were going to build up a huge assult, but that assult never came. You even managed to clear our a few small villages where you found only 5 or 10 goblins inhabiting which is far smaller than even the smallest goblin village. It appeared as if the others up and left. Hobgoblins were missing entirely.

Your village still decided to move though despite the evidence as they had for so long grown used to the attacks and wanted to move somewhere safely.

Dennis Harry:

Your fey blood seems to have made you very adaptable at conversing with humans, even though you do not have much experience with them it surprises you that there are many other Elf races around who are more than happy to work with the humans. Not all elves have a 'holier-than-thou' attitude which you find at first disturbing but have gotten used to them seeing that not all Elf kind think and act the same.

Something stirrs in your blood, telling you that a home is in danger, but not the one you were born into but the deep forest. It is said the deeper in the forest you go the more likely you will find fey creatures. You can't interpret the warning, but you get the feeling that it's about something 'unnatural' happening up north.

Sigz:

In your jurney you find that you are not the only one who has radical ideas on the world of Alchemy. You met a Dwarf who was missing a nose and a Gnome who's left hand was burnt away due to acid and replaced with a hook designed to handle vials.

They both whisper to you of a town north of Beregost, a safe haven for the evils of the world. So far no one has been able to cure this problem or destroy this evil, which makes it the ideal place to collect rare and not entirely legal alchemical goods. There are also rare arcane goods used to help wizards in creating spells of their own. You were warned however not to start trouble nor to go alone as people are not afraid to invite you into a dark corner so they can thrust a dagger deep into your heart.

Whisper:

The word on the street is that something big is starting up. You are unsure as of what since many people were afraid to speak in public and you were more interested in seporating them from their coin purses. They spoke of great treasures being uncovered by these groups and how they are attempting to seize power and control over the entire world.

One of them mentioned the idea sounded stupid and just as he said this he drank deeply and collapsed onto the table. Poisoned by something very powerful. The most important parts of the conversation were that this group was involved in the kidnappings in Beregost.

Lerin:

In your travels you are seen as a gentle and kind soul, giving people gold who were down on their luck. It saddened you that most of these people spent the money on strong drink and were back on the street, however there was a elderly man who wasn't a drinker. He didn't have the same smell of drink on his breath as the others and when you gave him coin he smiled brightly towards you.
"Thank you, my boy. You have such a kind heart." he looks around quickly for a few moments to make sure no one else is paying attention and then grabs you, pulling himself up to whisper into your ear. Join the next caravan to leave town to Beregost. There is great evil there and you must stop it before it grows too big." he let's go and as soon as you turn your head and turn back he dissappeared, but still the smell remained which was that of lavender.

This is the smell that you first encountered when you left home and decided to travel the world. You find it odd and there appears to have been no one who witnessed this happen neither. Anyone you tell this story too just looks at you strangly even though you swear that they were looking in your direction the entire time.

So now you guy's can do a bit of roleplaying whilst I roll up an encounter, plus your characters can get to know each other. On a side note where is everyone on the road? Will you be sat on the caravan or have your own horse or riding god respectively.

The Caravan driver looks to the group, smiling as he feels very safe on the road with so many guards.
"I must admit. I didn't believe so many would sign up to this. Them Orcs have been causing terrible trouble." he spits on the ground at the mention of Orcs "Me mate was killed by one. Horrible way to go. They used to take slaves but they stopped and now kill anyone who come down these roads." He takes a curious glance at the group and decides that he's safe enough to ask this question. "So why are you travellin' to Beregost? You all plan to sort out them kidnappers? The Flaming Fist might've beaten you to it."

Sitting with the driver with one foot proped up, the half-elf seems intent on watching the road. He is actually lost in his own mind, pondering the use of sand in alchemy.
..with the aplication of heat... ...the chemical reaction to sulfates... ...stops the burning process...

Snapping out of his reverie at the sound of a voice he takes a moment to remember where he is and where he's going.

"Hmm? Beregost? Flaming Fist? Oh! Yes." Smiling as it comes back to him. "Well we must see won't we."

"If what they say about Beregost is true then we should find no lack in things to do if The Flaming Fist has beat us to the punch eh?"

"There are still plenty of things ta be done up north from what I 'ere." he continued to causiously watch the road and looks back to the half-elf. "You seem ta be in deep thought. Have ya been on the road long, lad?" he clearly seems interested in trying to take his mind off of other things and hope to arrive in Beregost with his goods unmolested.

"No, not realy. I have resons to be on it though and hold no fear of it." The half-elf replies curtly if somwhat crisply.

"But tell me of yourself. You must be a brave man to travel this trade rout in theese times. Especially so with the orcs acting up." He raises one eyebrow with the last remark, a small smile on his lips.

We all have to make our living somehow." he smiles as he talks about his family, happy that he could forget about the possible danger on the way.

The driver seems to almost jump out of his seat as he was reminded of the Tiefling that has joined this group and appeared to have a strange raspy voice.

"I d-don't intend to stay Ma'am." his voice shook as he was clearly a little afraid of her, but didn't want to let on. He felt safer having her on his side rarther than no one. "I should be safe since I didn't bring a kid with me and it's only kids who have gone missing. I'm certain I'll be safe with you all protecting me."

Did it this way because it's up to your character if he tells the group or not about his findings. :)
You find the tracks of Orcs heavy in this area. There has been recent activity here and you can tell the Orcs aren't trying to hide their tracks at all and can count how many there are clearly.

You determin that there are at least 8 in the warband. The marks reveal that they are crouching suggesting that they might be hiding nearby in the bushes.

"True dat." he nods, clearly not the fighting type but he does have a short sword strapped to his waist. "I heard it was some kind of demon or monster. Something that dissappears in shadows and snatches the children in the dead of night."

Prior to leaving on the trip for the day, Badger was hoping to get some information using Speak with Animals (gnomish ability) to talk to a bird in the area in exchange for some grain (mule food) to learn of any humanoids and cook fires (or smoke) along the trip to the town. I would even offer to provide more food if the bird would scout ahead for us and bring back warning in advance.

Knowledge (Nature) +6 and Handle Animals +3 to help with this.

If it brought back a report then I can expend some uses of my Domain Speak with Animal.

I would also use Survival +6 to try to locate any tracks from Orcs scouting out and ambush spot to help spot trouble before traveling into it.

Okey, the animal tells you in it's own way that it has seen Orcs attacking from a hidden village. She assumes that the camp is 20 Orcs strong and that she doesn't know why they are here, but they take no prisioners and either eat the humanoids they take off the caravans or kill them for their own sick fun. Few females have been kept there as breeding slaves.

The bird also points out creatures you can assume are Goblinoids coming to talk with them, but some creatures it talks about you don't quite know what they were doing there.

Knowledge Local DC 20 or Knowledge History DC 15 to find out what creatures it talks about.

Handy trick that. I should do that with my gnome sometime :)

That was a crit since you got a 20. You'll need to roll another 1d20 with the same modifer to see if it's confirmed then it'll be x3 damage.

Plus which Orc are you attacking? One of the ones emerging from the shrubs or the tough looking leader standing in the middle of the road.

Plus what is everyone's position on the Caravan

Male Gnome Inquisitor 2

Thanks for the info. Yeah, Speak with Animals is a good information gathering tool for Gnomes and Druids.

Could you give me a run down on where the Orcs are arranged in relation to the caravan carts and how many carts are we protecting?

For information, I will be riding my mule and accompanied by my pair of guard dogs. If I spotted the Orcs in time then I would try to place myself some where to the end of one end of the orcs aiming to attack a flank. My dogs would be in 'Defend' mode to protect me and the mule from anyone attacking me.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

For the purposes of Iniative Fox and Hunter will be waiting and guarding, growling loudly and baring their teeth as they wait for the incoming Orcs.

Whisper Blueflame moves ontop of the caravan with her weapons at the ready getting the attention of the Orcs.

Malstei let loose his arrow and just like the Elves from legend the arrow buries itself right between the Orc's eyes and it falls to the floor dead. This expert marksmanship puts off some of the orcs wishing they had better cover.

All the Orcs start to throw their Javalins, attempt to try and kill the party.

DM only:

Orc vs Malstei:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

3 Orcs vs Whisper:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Orc vs Kyras:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

Orc vs Badger:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Orc Captain swings at the Caravan Driver:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

One Orc misses Malstei completely, as if he he was still thrown off from the deadly accurcy of the Elf.

Whisper made herself a bit of a target by revealing herself on top of the caravan and so 3 Orcs threw their Javalins at her, but all of them miss and fall harmlessly to the floor.

Another throws a Javalin at Badger, but the throw was too high and the Javalin flies off into the background.

One throws a Javalin at Kyras, hitting him squarely in the shoulder.
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

The axe cuts deeply into the caravan driver who has his sword out ready to attack but was knocked back by the blow.
1d12 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

After taking such a heavy blow the caravan driver grows pale and retreats into the caravan.
"Save me!" he retreats inside hoping to escape the onslought of the orc, seeming to agilly jump in without hurting himself more.

Map tools, best friend a DM can have ;)

Well since the Orc moves before you and gets up close I'd assume your character isn't crazy enough to have thrown that bomb at him at that close so you can change your action if you wish.

Still waiting for the 5th member of the group though.

ouch!

Gritting his teeth as the pain flares up in his shoulder Kyras jumps down from his perch in the wagons seat and pulls an iron canreen from the folds of his robe, downing it's contents in two hasty gulps.

Grimacing he sticks his toung out with a shiver. "ugh! Thats foul!" The effects are apparent as his skin seems to harden into scabs and his shoulders seem to broaden.

drinking my mutagen gaining +4 con, +2 natural armor and a -2 to charisma for 10 min. taking cover if ther's any to be had in the wagon seat.

Yeah, Ouch. Didn't intend the roll to be that high, but ouch and that's from one of the low levels. Plus you can go into the wagon to hide with the Driver, though he did recently run away from the Orc Warlord who is weilding a horrible looking Greataxe.

Fox: 21

Malstei Alenuath: 18
Orc Captain: 18
Orcs: 17

Round 2 map: Map

Gridded for you guys to know movement and stuff: Gridded

The one with the red cross is the one that got the arrow right between the eyes and the other Orcs have yet to be damaged. The huge orc appears to be grinning as he has his axe dripping in blood, ready for his next assult.

No, not hiding. Just covering.

Acessing the battlefield Kyras selects a spot where he can couse some havoc. Pulling a small glass vial from a stap in his belt he pops the lid and pours its contents into another flask. Shaking the flask in a jerking motion he reaches back and hurls it at the orcs.

Chucking a bomb at the middle orc south of the road.
ranged touch, point blank; 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 5 splash dmg to anyone within 5'

The one closest to the dogs? Don't worry the splash damage is nowhere near them

The orc roars in pain as the bomb explodes on impact causing him horrible pain as the volitile chemicals react. The Orc is still standing, but appears to be in a lot of pain.

Round 2:

Malstei will target the big orc with the greataxe and let fly. "Die foul Orc!" Mal grunts practically frothing.

Ranged Attack Longbow - 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Arrow Damage - 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

The leader cries in pain as the Arrow enters through a space in the armour and cuts into his bulky chest. He growls, baring his teeth as he looks at Malstei with increased rage.

"You will die, Elf! Die like the last Elf Skull Crusher hit!"

Kyras:

Make a perception check. I assume you went inside the caravan?

Spoiler:
Yup. Duck and cover :)

Kyras:

You don't manage to see much, but you do notice that the caravan driver takes out a vial of something and gargles it down quickly. You notice he stops bleeding and his wounds appear to recover. He muttered something and then turns around, noticing you and then smiles coyly.
"That one's a real big bastard, ain't he? Can't say I'm surprised. He killed the last group."

Male Gnome Inquisitor 2

Fox and Hound will delay to Badger's Init unless they are attacked or an orc attempts to melee Badger.

Init 5, Badger will use a free action to pronounce Judgment of Healing. First round this acts as Fast Heal 1.

Free Action spend 1 round from Domain Animal for Speak with Animals to order Fox and Hound to Attack the Orc at the end of the line closest to my starting position.

Fox attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Fox damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Hunter attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Hunter damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Badger will ride his mule to follow up the pair but not take an attack this round. Badger wants to use the bushes, trees, and confusion of combat to cover his usage of Ghost Sound (Gnome ability).

I can make the equivalent sound of 4 people. I am going to try for the sound of twanging bow strings combined with some screams of pain and words for Orc of Ambush and epitah Elves. I am hoping to panic the orcs on the flank that I am on. Normal DC is 13 plus 1 for illusions by Gnome makes DC 14 Will Save to believe there might be a couple of additional elves attacking with bows.

So the one south-west of you? okey and not moving the Orcs until Whisper replies since she goes just before they do.
