"Take 'em down boys." the sergeant shouts. He and his men draw their blades.

Rilumin may also act in the surprise round.
Then both Rilumin and Leo may act before the traitorous guards do.

The room is 10' wide, 15' long. Basically four guards between Leo/Rilumin and the sergeant.

-1 wis Half-Elf Ranger (Skirmisher) 7 - HP 73/77

Rilumin wastes no time, taking a 5ft step back and unloading arrows into the captain.

Shot 1 (two arrows)
RS+DA+PBS: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
dmg: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
dmg: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Shot 2
RS+DA+PBS: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
dmg: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16

Shot 3
RS+DA+PBS: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
dmg: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

@Rilumin: If I read the DM's post right, you'd get one more shot. You get to act in the surprise round, so that's one shot. Then you get your full attack action as posted because you go before the guards. Looks like you left out the surprise round shot. Finally, do you really only get a +1 to hit on your first shot in the full attack action?

@Roland: Good catches!

"Wha-!" Leo mutters as the guards draw steel.

On his turn, Leo will cast Holy Smite (will 20) on as many of the guards as he can, all the while excluding Rilumin from the area. If he has to 5 foot step away to do this without provoking, he will.

If he doesn't have the room to take the 5 foot step, he'll cast defensively. concentration: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31 (success)

During the guards turn, if one approaches Leo, he will cast Stone Shield as an immediate action, granting him +4 AC and +2 reflex from cover from their attacks until the beginning of my next turn. (Assuming there is a good amount of stone around. If the floor is wooden, ignore this)

-1 wis Half-Elf Ranger (Skirmisher) 7 - HP 73/77

good catch, that first one should be a 22 not a 12 to hit.

Rilumin fires more arrows before stepping out into the street. Will fire at the captain unless he falls, then i will shift attacks to the nearest guardsman.

"Leo, tell the others to expect trouble. Guards have been paid off."

Surprise round shot i forgot

Four rounds

The sergeant collapses after the first three shots, and Rilumin takes down one of the other guards with his fourth.

Will saves vs Holy Smite. d20 + mods = 15, 10, 7
Holy Smite Damage: 3d8 ⇒ (6, 3, 7) = 16

The rest collapse to Leo's spell.

Haste expires
Assuming both Leo and Rilumin head back towards the tavern? Or go looking for another guard house? Or other?

-1 wis Half-Elf Ranger (Skirmisher) 7 - HP 73/77

Searching that desk for the coins. Not going to handle coins directly in case mages can divine something. Looking for any papers of evidence.

Leo nods to rilumin and peaks outside, seeing if the coast is clear before hustling back into range of the message spell.

He tells her, "guard post had been paid to attack us. we took them out. Be careful, we'll be back with manacles soon"
He then runs back to help Ril checking out the post after waiting to see serelinas response

Rilumin grabs the bag of coins on the desk behind where the sergeant was standing and begins rifling through the paperwork. An initial glance shows normal guard reports, duty rosters and the like.

Leo heads back to the others to let them know what the hold up is.

There are 5 pairs of manacles on the guards, and another 2 in the guard house that can be used for those at the tavern. Who is being manacled? Who is being taken prisoner? Anyone being questioned immediately?

@GM: Did you want to fast-forward to Rilumin and Leo being back at the brothel? I'm taking it from your questions that you do, but wanted to check. Overall, my thought was to arrest/manacle Kleonna, the drow, and the unnamed guy Roland knocked unconscious with the magic sword. I was *hoping* that the guard could watch the place while we took those 3 back to the Tower, then we would return and question the rest here at the brothel and then release many/most of them. If that isn't possible, we'll manacle/tie-up/gag the three and question each of the others using the bedroom with the secret door entrance as an interrogation room. Rilumin would likely serve as the guard in the main room for the tied-up three and the remainder waiting to be interrogated. I'm open to other ideas if this doesn't suit though.

Yes, everyone is gathered together again.

Sounds good. I imagine most won't need in-depth interrogating at the tower. We have pretty good sense motive so if someones lying constantly we'll bring em back.

When the two return, Ian looks over, nodding slightly.

"Trouble?"

"Yeah... You could say that. We should discuss it when back at the tower, but we're on our own for now. We're going to need transportation for us and anybody we need to take in for questioning."

Leo suggests that Roland, Ian, and one other person stays here for the questioning, and will use his scroll of Zone of Truth unless whoever will be doing the questioning tells him not to. The rest should get to the Tower ASAP, and arrange transportation to the guard tower to "clean up" and collect evidence and the suspects for further, magical questioning. "We'll have to use the same spells we did this morning." he arches an eyebrow, signifying the extent of the mess made by him and Rilumin.

-1 wis Half-Elf Ranger (Skirmisher) 7 - HP 73/77

Ilumin holds out the bag of coins to Serelina when he can catch her separately from those to be questioned. "Can you divine anything of these, succh as the owner before last? A shabbily-clad person handed this to the guard and fled the gatehouse. The guard acted suspiciously, and after I questioned him, they attacked. I believe if we had brought those guards here, they would have worked to free our captives."

Roland worked to contain his restlessness as Leo and Rilumin returned, sans guard. Something was wrong, that much was obvious. Time to go to Plan B.

Welcome back gentleman, I see the guard trusted us to handle this situation on our own. Might help to put the people at ease, he thought to himself. Whatever happened with the guard, the story was not likely true, but best to stave off restlessness. Roland listened to Leo's plan, but pulled his fellow aasimar off to side before responding. In a low tone he said, You, I and, sadly, Ms. Charming over there,he nodded quickly at Serelina are best suited to be around for interrogation. But we still need someone to watch the rest while we conduct the interrogation. We'll want to talk to each one alone and out of earshot to the others so they don't change stories to fit each other. That means someone needs to stay out there and guard the rest. How about this: Ian stays put in the main room with the rest, while we talk to them one-by-one in the bedroom with the secret door. We can keep an eye on the only other easy point of entry, while Ian guards the entrance door and the rest of the people. Rilumin I cast Invisibility on, and he goes to alert the tower and get help. Roland's tone suggested he would be rather interested in why the guard were not already here after Leo and Rilumin's foray.

Hope this plan makes sense: Rilumin goes off alone and invisible to the Tower to get a contingent of guards. Ian stays in the main room guarding the people. The Big 3 (Kleonna, drow and knocked-out guy) are manacled, tied up and gagged, and kept in the main room. Leo, Roland and Serelina talked briefly to each of the rest (prostitutes, bouncers and clientel) to hopefully clear/release them. If any seem worth hanging onto, we add them to the Big 3. When Rolumin and the guard arrive, we transport the Big 3 and whomever else we feel we need to over to the Tower for further, more secure questioning. We hold off on questioning the Big 3 until back at the Tower. Sound good?

Leo Nods, and casts the zone of truth spell in the hallway near the bedrooms, so the area will effect at least the first several feet of each room near the door (In case we want to question anyone in separate rooms.

If anyone refuses to answer while under the effects of the spell, we can also add them to the big 3.

yup

OK then, since we seem to be in agreement, we'll go ahead with the plan as outlined in my last post. After Rilumin is made Invisible and sent on his way and Ian is comfortably ensconced in the main room guarding the rest, Leo, Serelina and Roland will one by one take the rest into the Zone of Truth room (one with secret door) for questioning. We'll start with the clientel, then the bouncer, then the working girls. I'm thinking one generic question set could suffice, with the GM letting us know what answers come up for potential follow-on.

Here's the questions I came up with, we can add others if folks have more/better ones

1) What is your name and where can we find you later if needed for follow-up?

2) How often have you come here or how long have you worked here?

3) At any time did you see of the following people (describe Anthony, Vaek, the two half-orcs we killed and/or the dwarf/gnome)?

4) If they work here, who runs the place, who actually owns it, and (if applicable) is there anyone who periodically comes by of seeming importance?

5) Is there anything else about you or this place that the authorities would likely want to know about?

I'd take out 5 or rephrase it, it's too broad and any person who stole some bread might panic and think this raid is about a petty crime. Focus on their tie in with this location, I think, and not go after any potential crime they think we would want to know about. Maybe ask if they are aware of the secret passage in this room.

-1 wis Half-Elf Ranger (Skirmisher) 7 - HP 73/77

i would say also move tables/chairs in such a way to create temporary difficult terrain near any exits

Works for me, on both ideas. So...for Question 5, change it to read "were you aware that this establishment had a secret door in it". Roland will help Ian move tables/chairs into position so that anyone making a run for the front door will have to move through a patch of difficult terrain to do so.

Rilumin races back to the tower, under cover of invisibility, while the rest prepare the captives for questioning, taking precautions against more interruptions.

Under the zone of truth, in one if the rooms, the captives are brought in one by one. The responses of the patrons are much the same.

Spoilered, just to separate each prisoners answer from each other - everyone can/should be reading these.

Max (Patron):

"My name is Max. I work down at the docks, tha's the best place to find me."
"I come here with my buddies, once every couple of weeks. When I can afford some companionship."
"I don't pay no attention to others who come here. Figure there business is their own. But I seen all kinds in here before. Half-orc, dwarves, elves, gnomes."
"I don't know anything about no secret doors."

Nevan (Patron):

"My name is Nevan. Me and Max, we both work down at the docks during the day."
He thinks for a moment before answering the second question, "Come here all the time for a drink, maybe once a month for something more."
"I think I seen that gnome before. Realy mean spirited guy, almost got in a fight with him once, thought he was going to bust my nose."
"A secret door? What they been hiding?"

Yanu (Patron):

"My name is Yanu. I'm a tailor by trade, you can find me at my shop." He gives and address here in the slums.
"I don't come here very often. Just when I need a break from day to day life."
"I can't say I recognize any of them."
"No"
he states with a puzzled expression.

Merissa (Employee):

"I'm Merissa. I live nearby here." She girl, seventeen or eighteen, gives an address close by. No doubt one of the many run down homes that dot the area.
"I've been here a month is all."
"They ware all in here in a couple days ago. Vaek? The one with one hand, showed up then they all left." This would have been the day of the failed attack on the criminals.
"Kleonna owns the place. All kinds come here, some with more cash then sense."
"A secret door? Whatever for?"

Shelly (Employee):

"Shelly." she stats flatly. "I live in tiny town."[/b] While very unusal, there are a few humans and others of taller races that live in tiny town.
"About six months. It pays the bills, keeps me fed." There is more she isn't saying.
"They're all regulars here. Some of our best customers." Again truthful, but there is more she isn't saying.
"Kleonna."
She stammers for a moment, but is unable to evade the magic of the zone of truth, "Yes." she finally says, offering only the single word.

Ghar (Bouncer):

Ghar tries to put on a tough guy mask, and mostly succeeds at doing so.
"Ghar." he says, his voice growling with irritation. "You wanna talk? You come find me here in the future."
"I've been here about 5 years."
"Yea, I've seen 'em in here before. I don't ask questions of the customers unless they step out of line." And an unspoken, some customers get to do whatever they want.
"Kleonna. You hurt her and I'll find you." he threatens.
"Yes. I know about that. Question is, how did you find out about it? Not a lot of people that know, and best it stays that way for your own good."

Kleonna:

Kleonna simply stares down at her trembling hands, tears streaking down her face. She refuses to answer in questions.

You are free to add further questions to any of the above, or press further for any given person.

"Worst parts the waiting, eh?"

After pausing for replies, if any, he sheathes his greatsword and carries it over to Kleonna, crouching in front of her. His scarred face and one clouded eye peer at her.

To Nevan: "Got in a fight with the gnome? Over what?"

Leo has no followups for the other patrons.

To Merissa: "What do you know of the drow" (specifically asked to try and try another angle for sense motive, if the spell failed on her)

Leo recommends Shelly for coming in for further questioning.

Ghar as well. Kleonna, obviously yes. However, he adds in a good cop sympathy to Ian's comment, trying to diplomatically convince her to speak. "We understand you are dealing with a dangerous lot, but you can help us keep them from doing any more harm, and keep you safe if you cooperate."

We actually didn't plan to question Kleonna here. Didn't really give us much here but we'll definitely pick it up with her back at the Tower

Roland mostly nodded as each of the patrons spoke, taking in what they said and seeing if anyone else had anything to ask before adding, Well, we certainly appreciate your cooperation. Apologies for holding you up. I doubt we'll need anything else, but we'll follow up if we do. You are free to go.

@GM; I thought there were more than two prostitutes here. Am I wrong on that? Roland's eyes, though not visible to anyone in his void mask, narrowed as Merrisa spoke. Really, no idea about the Secret Door? Can you say so please? Say "I did not know about a secret door in the Wailing Spirits". If her response does not cause him any suspicion of lies, he recommends she also be released. Roland's demeanor goes flat though with Shelley. Yes...well, we appreciate THAT little bit of honesty. We'll need to speak to you a little more. He then proceeds to bind her up like the other three to come with.

Is that actually a threat?? Do you not remember not an hour ago nearly pissing yourself when I demanded you disarm? Roland's disbelief at Ghars' audacity is not remotely feigned. And you are going to ask US how we found out about your nefarious little operation? My good man, you just talked your way into a free visit to the Tower! He then proceeds to bind the man to take with as well.

Assuming all that goes well.... As the Patrons and Merrissa are set free, the rest were already bound and ready for travel. Looking at his companions he added, anyone have any other business here before we take these fine folk into the Tower?

@Rilumin: Hah! There's a potential situational intimidate bonus if I've ever heard one!

Assuming we don't get anything else off of the final employee, we can task her with the shutting down of the business (as we'll be taking the owner with us), and as our contact for when it will no longer be considered a crime scene and reopened for business. If we have to bring her in too, we should probably put the local guard detail on turning away potential patrons.

Leo will remove his glasses and shake the hand of any person they consider free to go, providing a friendly human(ish) face for the people to see as they leave. "Have a good night. The Tower thanks you for your cooperation and apologizes for the inconvenience."

Retcon
It is possible that magic may reveal something of the prior owners from a possession, but not something I am expert in. Let us keep them for now just in case.

Nevan:

"I don't know what the gnomes problem was. Looked at me like I was a goblin or something, then came over and spit in my drink. I wasn't looking' for no trouble though, so I just got up and left."

Merissa:

Her eyes go wider in fear, "I swear I didn't know there was a secret door."

"I don't know who she is", referring to the drow. "I have not seen her before."

There were a couple other women, but rather than doing multiples I simplified things a bit - they'd either be like Merissa, or like Shelly.

Ghar:

Ghar growls, then turns to sullen silence.

Kleonna:

Kleonna looks up at Ian for a moment, then to Leo as he promises safety and protection, "Death would be better than being taken into the tower."

Leo, are you revealing your true eyes as you are leaving? Or still disguised as a full human?

With Ghar, Shelly, Kleonna, and the two unconscious in tow, the group heads back to the tower to do further questioning.

As the group left the brothel with prisoners in tow, Roland cast invisibility on himself to hide his form. He floated up by Ghar and whispered, Don't think I'm still not here. I'd hate for you to make a mistake. The aassimar otherwise kept watch for any concerns as the group made it back to the tower and had each of the prisoners assigned to cells. Afterward, he released his eidolon form, came out of invisibility and found his companions. So, shall we begin our chats? Kleonna first?

With certain members of the crew invisible, Serelina imperiously takes the lead, gruffly moving past the various security posts to reach the cells. She separates the various prisoners into separate cells and nods at Roland as he fades back into view for the rest of the party. "Yes, Kleonna is likely the best bet for real information. Let us proceed..."

Prior to beginning the questioning, Roland let whomever was in charge at the Tower at the time know of their exploits at the Wailing Spirits. Less interested in a giving a full report, he instead sought to advise the guard of the catfolk still out there as well as the need to occupy or otherwise deal with the brothel.

Back at the prison, the aasimar entered Kleonna's cell with the rest of the party. He put on a sympathetic face as he sat down next to the woman. You don't know me, but I am very familiar with your situation. I also understand that your former allies, he placed a strong emphasis on that word, do not look kindly on those who fall into our hands. They won't help you, but perhaps we can. We will need your full cooperation of course. He took a minute for what he said to sink in, then continued. Now, tell us everything you know about your former allies. And do realize we are rather good and noticing fibs; honesty really is the best policy, yes?

This might go without saying, but Roland is in disguise whenever he uses his eidolon form. Unless she has enough luck and/or Perception to have seen through his disguise in eidolon form, Kleonna would think they have met before

Ukalo assists with getting the prisoners locked away within the tower itself. The 'cells' are large, used to sometimes contain magical creatures for study.

Hezek, the one armed summoner sits in one of them, staring vacantly at one wall. Any exuberance for life, however twisted his views may have been, appears to have drained from him. A single manacle around one of his wrists laced with magical runes reflects light.

Several guard patrols are dispatched to lock down The Wailing Spirits until further notice.

With those issues taken care of, questioning if Kleonna begins.

She looks up at Roland, eyes bloodshot, "You know nothing of my situation, and honey-tongued lies and promises won't sway me."

Roland and Serelina:

She tries to keep her voice even and level, but there is a fierceness to it that conveys a deeper connection than simple profit or association with like individuals would generate.

With the ice in her voice, Serelina calmly says. "So there seems to be a deeper loyalty than we thought at work here. Tell me, is this something that you will die for? If so, we can spare you some pain and us some time and simply move to execution for treason. If you are not willing to cooperate, it would seem that is our only choice."

Rilumin, still concerned with the situation at the guardhouse, files a report of what happened there.

Rilumin may not hold enough status in the tower to report directly to a Master or something, but would report to whoever he thought could best make sure things were filed correctly and who might do something about it and give it the attention it deserves.

Rilumin:

You can report to one of the guard bureaucrats/officers that work in the area of the tower, expecting they will be much more reliable and trustworthy than those in the slums. They immediately dispatch several groups of guards to head to the designated guard house and begin an investigation into the issue.

Kleonna's expression hardens and she looks up at Serelina, jaw clenched, determined not to break or yield.

It is plain for all to see though that her arms are shaking, and her hands are white, clenched in fists.

Ian winces, "Think the Tower hasn't had'ta break tough people before? You got two choices." He crouches in front of her to meet her eyes.

"One, you hold out as long as you can, get tortured in whatever f+#!ed ways the Tower comes up with, break, and tell us everything. Two, you tell us right away, don't get tortured, and maybe we can help you out with whatever these gangs have over you."

A crack in the tough-guy persona that seems to be Ian's default. Serelina might remember when Ian started to go easy on Vaek mid-interrogation. The only thing you've ever seen Ian be soft about is people who lived in the slums, like him. He clenches his fists, making his gauntlets creak. Though not the most eloquent or persuasive, Ian had a grim sort of street wisdom and an intimidating presence even when he meant to be friendly.

"But if we gotta' get that information by force, you'll be rottin' in a cell, we'll act on the information, and the gangs'll know you ratted on 'em. And we won't help you, because you'd have made it f#~~in' clear that we're enemies. Let's be friends, Kleonna."

She immediately flinches away as Ian gets in her face, her attempt at bravery melting away. "What information do you want?" she asks in a bare whisper, "I just run the tavern and make sure certain people can get in and out when needed."

Preferring to be at the tower with Rilumin to make sure everything with the guard corpses works well, Leo knows that he should instead probably be there for the interrogation. He stays near the back and watches the others work, occasionally casting guidance on them to give them a bonus to their interrogation.

This is Leo's first go through a Tower interrogation. He is quiet and contemplative.

Once the report is made regarding what he had figured to be the bribing of the guards, Rilumin moves to the area of the interrogation. He remains silent, content to be sadistically amused by Ian's ill treatment of their guests. He has a knife out, straightening a shaft for an arrow.

"Good. Let's begin simply. What people? - All of them an all you know about them, please."

Kleonna takes a deep breath, "Those still alive...."

"Anthony. He's a cripple. Maklo broke his leg many years ago when he was still young, then inducted him into the organization. He was at one time a more pleasant individual then he is now. Life has not treated him kindly."

"Vaek: What don't you already know about Vaek - you had his hand removed. His parents were killed by bandits on the road to Gumlat, and he grew up in the slums on his own. And as would be expected had to beg and steal just to make a living. It was either learn to be good at it or die."

"Sorad's a gnome. I don't know much about him, except he came from the Hold. Nasty temper in him, I just stay out of his way."

Roland:

She knows more about Sorad, but there is some fear in her voice.

"Tasem: He's sitting in the cell right there." She indicates the armored man who came down the stairs and sounded the alarm. "I don't see him around much, but others often defer to him."

"Smet: He's a conjurer or sorcerer of some sort. Spends a lot of coin with the girls, but otherwise works for Tasem. I expect he boasts a lot more than he's capable of. He spent some time in your magical prison a few years back."

"Milah: She's a catfolk, real good with her daggers, and spends most of her time on the rooftops spying things out for the organization."

Kleonna goes silent, but it is clear she has not spoken of everyone she knows.

Roland had hung back a bit as Serelina and Ian led the questioning, but upon hearing some less-than-full-truths he decided to jump back in. Using his usual cheery tone he said, Now Kleonna, that was rather better than your first attempt, but there's a bit more to tell, yes? First, Sorad. You left off some juicy tidbits! Please do tell. You had done such a good job spinning Vaek and Anthony's hard-luck lives into tear-jerking versions, why not give our favorite dwarf-who-likes-to-pretend-he's-a-gnome the same treatment?

A quick pause. Now Tasem will get his turn later. Let's talk about where we would find Smet and Milah. The latter apparently tried to introduce herself to one our people earlier today, but failed to make much of an impression. And by that I mean she ran away screaming. So, good addresses for both, and do know that we'll check before you would glean any benefit from providing the correct information.

Another pause. And I do believe we are leaving out a couple of half-orcs, yes? Perhaps a drow or two? I also seem to recall someone named Emma. Moving closer to her and locking his gaze to hers, Remember I said we have ways of knowing when you don't give the whole truth. Let's see how you do this time. He then stepped back, smiled, and awaited her response.

Tears come to her eyes again, "Sicsivicus, he is a follower of Norgorber. He is going to kill me..."

Roland, Serelina, Leo:

It is not death she at his hands she fears, but that she has betrayed him. This is where her loyalty lies.

"You have Cheyle, and the Mistress... I have seen her only once." Her words are a whisper, "The shadow of shadows."

"I may have seen her more than once, but she is said to be a master of disguise - that she can emulate any man or woman alive. If she used the tavern hide out... I do not know if she ever did."
