Right, Hobart. An OOC thread is a good idea. That way we can consign the recruitment thread to oblivion. Hope everybody is enjoying it so far.

Grand Lodge

Actually it was DMWellard who brought it up in the recruit thread I just thought I would mention it in game.

Heh, I saw that afterward when I thought, "Hey, maybe I should look at the old recruitment thread to see if people have been chatting there!"

Male Elven Alchemist 1

I'm digging it so far. Id just like to say early on that if anyone is finding rorse to be a bit over the top or annoying than I don't mind a bit of constuctive OMG man can you quiet your bloodthirsty halfling down?

On another note, Hobart it amuses me to no end that our jail group is simular to the ships group, our cell block is harder than there's though.

Male Elven Alchemist 1

and aparently my phone didn't post for me when I posted earlier. yar!

I am beyond annoyed that, for whatever reason I cannot fathom, the submit post button does not appear when I try to post from my Blackberry. I have so many little ten and fifteen minute moments throughout my work day that I could look and post, but paizo.com is blocked on my work computers (or I'm at a school where I don't have computer access even if it weren't blocked). March break will soon be over, so my own posting rate will go down a bit starting Tuesday.

Male Elven Alchemist 1

I have posted from my g1 before, it just takes awhile for the thing to load and my signal must of failed at just the wrong time. I could of swore I post around 3...but I got a better post in for the waiting anyhow.

I agree. I can post from work, but I need to be discreet. It would be so much more convenient if I could post from my Blackberry.

Male Elven Alchemist 1

at least the board is pretty nondiscript, if you opened it in a small area and didn't have the avatars showing then it would appear pretty plain.

I can post from work too..as long as it isnt blatant and as i generally work alone in my office its not too difficult most times..I'll be working nights this week so I'll try and keep up my post rate whch isnt very high I know

Posting for my dot.

I'm lucky that Paizo isn't blocked for me (but plenty of similar sites are at work).

I know many GMs on PbP games like to wait for everybody in the group to make a post, or at least something that says their character has nothing to say at that point. Obviously, I don't do that; if an NPC is asked a direct question or obviously needs to make some response to a PC, I make it. I figure in the real world, when a group of seven people come to talk to another person, he or she doesn't wait for everyone of the seven to say something, plus this keeps the game moving along more smoothly. On the other hand, I realize that the pesky "real world" nonsense sometimes doesn't allow people to check the messageboards and post on a constant basis (stupid "real world"), and there may also be time zone considerations (given that we have people in Seattle, Texas, Nova Scotia, and England, to name a few), so if you're feeling that I'm posting too quickly, or you're never getting a chance to make posts before I ninja the scene and move to the next, please let me know, either here or in an e-mail gmnazard@gmail.com, so I can slow things down and wait for more people to post. Also, alas, I return to work tomorrow, so my own posting rate will soon decline (which may actually fix all these problems).

Does anyone here know if its possible to set myself up so that I get an e-mail when anybody posts to the game thread (or any particular thread)? It seems to me that the "subscribe to recent posts" button should do something like this, but all it does is open up a webpage with a bunch of HTML stuff on it.

I'd post this to the main forum, but I prefer to keep news of my stupidity to as small a group as possible.

Grand Lodge

Sorry I don't know of a way, but if you discover one let me know too :)

Male Elven Alchemist 1

I list my threads, its no email notification but you can tell whats been updated to any threads on that list a t a glance.

At the moment, the ship watch is Lilo, Rorse, ...... Titus.
How about Lilo, Rorse, Hobart, Corvus, Rommin, Eriniyes, Titus?

Remembering off course that most off us are laid low with seasickness.

Male Halfling

I've got a feeling it is going to be a long two months for Rorse.

On the subject of times and distances..two month to Arcadia from Absolam?..what is this ship using for power..water elemental engines?

Against the prevailing winds we'd be lucky to make the Arch of Aroden in two months..sailing ships rarely exceeded 8 knots 10 was exceptional.

Ships faster than that were specially built like the 19th century clippers..

Yes you got a sailing ship nut on this party...:)

Male Halfling

*pulls out large rubber mallet and pets it*

Now now Lilo, lets not stay on the ship longer than nessacary. It could have been the closest tip of Cassomir, or we could be taking a blessed channel that ole centuar face knows about. In a world of dragons wizards and halflings I don't doubt there could be a blessed wind and a gulf stream channel.

Well pardon me for liking a little reality to creep in to my Fantasy from time to time....Sea travel in the age of sail was...

1)Dirty
2)Dangerous
3)Slow

having said that it's the DM's game and I'll go with the flow..we don't have to play out every day of the voyage anyway..

Never mind Rorse you and I will get to have some fun with the Chelaxian Privateers who infest the arch of Aroden I'm sure.

Male Halfling

Just playing with you Lilo! *points to the fact that the mallet was rubber instead of spiked.* Rubber mallets make the sound *boink* opposed to *splat* also, you are pardoned for liking this...what was it you called it, creepy reality. * nod nod* =p

Male Elven Alchemist 1

Obviously as the Gm, you can eaisly steer Rorse off course. but I thought I'd speak about it ooc as well. After realizing that the only other Halflings he saw on the ship were male, Rorse has grown concerned but after his intial concern of a lack of a certain fair gender, his plans have grown. He is going to attempt together more hobbits and get them on the ships, if he can find the local halfing population he'll try to convince them to join. and then try to convince the ships to let them. He will try to find useful and crafty halflings if possible.

After all why shouldn't the colony have a halfling colony.

Hmm I was posting without my Campaign setting to hand previously and I admit now I was wrong..two days at about 6 knots would see us from Cassomir to Absalom.

It might take us two weeks to tack down to the Arch it would be 10 days in a straight line with a following wind

Yes I am anal about these things I admit it

Wow. You guys are a hard bunch! :)

I will admit that I do not own the campaign setting and instead use the online Pathfinder wiki which has a very low-detail map that's so bad I can't even read the scale. I have conferred with a player friend who does own the setting book, so I do the best I can. Also, I have no knowledge of sailing myself other than what I was able to Google about medieval and early-Renaissance sailing vessels. I have learned that Columbus averaged 150 miles per day, and that was considered extremely good distance, so I'm working on 100 miles per day. If things to be going differently than real-world physics would suggest, just go with it - there may or may not be another reason why it works.;)

Now, you really shouldn't have advertised that you are a sailing ship nut, Wellard. I researched several different types of ship design and floor plans when I created the Lady Iona, but it is by no means perfect and I would love pointers on how to better design the ship before we get into any potential sea battles. The ship is meant to be a two-masted, early-Renaissance galleon built more for speed than carrying capacity.

As for Rorse and his band of halflings, while it screws with the colonist roster, which I already have completed, there's absolutely no in-game reason why Rorse's intentions shouldn't be possible, so I'll just label you a trouble-maker and move on. :) Keep in mind, though that there are two entire other ships with their own colonial stock, and there may be female halflings in store. Also, he hasn't really come up yet, but there's a fourth male halfling on board - a soldier named Tupper.

We don't mean to make things difficult. I think we all appreciate the campaign so far and are having a good time. When I used to run, the group contained some physicists and some historians, both professional and amateur. In cases like this, I would just add something like:

"A priest of Gozreh stands at the fore front of the ship, concentrating in prayer and occasionally casting, throughout the day and night. At one point, you hear the captain telling the first mate 'I know it was expensive, but it was the only way we could make up time and meet up with the other ships. If we don't make it past the arch and catch the Brusway Current, the trip will take a couple of extra seasons and we just can't afford that. As it stands now, we don't know how long the gate to the Water Plane will be open and the current flowing. Just don't let him creep you out; the priest is only taking us as far as Absalom.'" Just a thought. :)

Well running the Arch should be laugh a minute..the place is absolutely infested with Chelaxian privateers...hopefully with a fast ship we can outrun it.

Nazard I'll do some research but my period is really 18th -19th century..I'm not much up on Renaissance building techniques. But I guess we are talking a ship about the size of the Golden Hind which could make 8 knots with a good wind.

The settlement of Jamestown used the Susan Constant which is about the same size as the Hind, Godspeed about a third that size and Discovery which was about half the size of the Godspeed.

Incidentally for Rorse' information all the first wave colonists were male..

Fortunately, fantasy worlds seem to be a bit more gender-equality, except when it comes for the quantity of fabric their allowed.

As for the priest of Gozreh...like I said, don't pry too far. Things are in order. :) If this were a totally sea-based campaign, I wouldn't be running it because I don't know enough. As it is, the only reason I start where I do is that relationships can be built before the actual task of making landfall, and it gives the PCs a chance to make a name for themselves so it makes sense when landfall does come why these random passengers have such pivotal roles.

Male Halfling

I don't mind you telling me. no, you crazy halfling, please don't try to bring a hoard of hobbits on to the ships. there are also plenty of in game things that could happen to prevent it, it could be solved with a simple asking of khieron.

*puts away his trouble making tool kit*

In fact, I am taking on myself to go and ask Brycen about it or Khiron which ever he can find first. if the answer is no, he will be satisfied with making it happen wonce the colony is a bit more broken in.

It's simple..we get to Arcadia..make our fortunes.. build a warship.. sail back to Avistan.. raid a couple off slave farms in Cheliax and bring the newly freed halflings back to Arcadia

See..simple

Male Halfling

*grin* I like it, though I suggest a few stops off at most of the ports to gather up as much of our kin as possible.

Viking halflings anyone?

No I was thinking more a homage to the Mystra Setting..where the Hin(Halflings)were the worlds most feared pirates..mind you all the really good Pirate Captains were female(sexy Larry Elmore Halfling girls if I remember rightly)

I never dreamed I'd give up my beloved Mystara for any other setting until I read the stuff about Golarion. Mainly, I love that the god-beings can reach down and fiddle with little stuff other than sending the occasional dream. And I love that the geographical layout was constructed with a certain amount of forethought (as opposed to, 'what culture haven't we used yet? oh, Arabic! Let's put a big desert here, immediately due south of the Norse area and north of the roman area, and east of the giant forest...'). Golarion puts the Arabic-inspired culture right on the east of the Mediter...I mean, the Inner Sea where it's supposed to be.

Plus having dwarves and halflings able to cast arcane spells is fun too.

Great plan! What is the range brackets for vomiting after months at sea coming back?

But seriously, I like that sort of Robin Hood aspect of it. An admirable and viable long term goal.

With regard to the numbers we have on board the following was an average crew for a Carrack type vessel of the same size as the Lady Iona using the Mary Rose as an example

The average wartime manning would have been about 185 soldiers, 200 sailors, 20–30 gunners and an assortment of other specialists such as surgeons, trumpeters and members of the admiral's staff for a total of 400–450 men

However in some cases the ship could carry up to 700 for short distances.

The Mayflower a merchant man off much the same size carried 102 Colonists and had a crew of 20 to 25

Numbers wise I guess we are much closer to the Mayflower than the Mary Rose

By the way, my lack of posting on the game is because I have chosen to stay on board and 'pretend' we haven't docked. This is because my character (as I suspect it would be with most of those that escaped from the prison) would be off and away by now.

So now the paranoia starts..we all know Chellish Intelligence is.. err..'devilishly' clever.. so why wouldn't they give us an obvious target to focus on while their real agent comes on board in Absolam.

Which means it could be anyone..including unfortunately the lovely Hickory.

Like I said paranoia..so serve the Pathfinders..trust no-one and keep your hand crossbow handy

Oh and you'll soon find that mention of Cheliax is the only thing that can darken Lilo's mood

Male Elven Alchemist 1

I can see it Corvus, maybe you could play it up that she has been too sea sick to have gone anywhere? even off ship.

ANd Yeah Lilo, that is one of the few reasons I think that Hickory wouldn't be the spy, I can't see a halfling being a spy for the Cheliaxians. I look forward to slaying some as well.

Ah but you see the very fact that NO-ONE would ever consider a halfling as a Chelaxian spy makes a halfling perfect for the job.Or what if she's disguised with say..a hat of Disguise...

Great now Lilo gets to suspect his potential girlfriend...lol.

Even worse..what if it's one of us..I mean how much do we really know about each other...that Corvus woman was skulking about the ship while we were in Port...maybe it's her...(gibber..gibber)

Male Elven Alchemist 1

I suppose I could just not tell you what was going on, Maybe Rorse thinks that she already has her hooks in you lol.

oh we are not the spies you silly shape shifter! next thing you know you'll be turning yourself in as the spy. =p

Grand Lodge

the first thing I told AAremeth was it could be his gardners of course he has racial blinders on, but I said it would be a perfect cover for it to be a halfling lol.

Male Elven Alchemist 1

It doesn't even make sense for it to be my gardners! Besides It is obviously. *points randomly* that guy.

Grand Lodge

Didn't their boss just get assassinated by a chelaxian supposedly?

Grand Lodge

oh political intrigue my mistake [cough] chelaxian spys![/cough]

Male Elven Alchemist 1

no, no, no. it was just political intrigue and what kind of terrible plan would you have to have, to hope for a random person to come into the ghetto to chartter your spies.

if that is their ingenious plan let them come.

Male Elven Alchemist 1

and really It all comes down to the way that Wat figured out Chase's name, persistance and time. I think, while the prisoners make attractive prospect, it is more easily the guards. I think there are not one but four spys on this ship.

Grand Lodge

oh now that is an interesting theory Im sure Ol Cpt. Horsey will love to hear you think it's the guards. Still a possibility though.

Well, its NOT the Chelaxian half-elf that ran up and joined the voyage at the last possible minute, who happens to have amazing stealth and perception skills and who keeps his mouth shut about where he comes from. Absolutely NOT that guy.

LOL..see this game is....fun.

Hooray. paizo.com isn't blocked on my school computer!! I can post from work during lunch two days a week. yeah, I guess it isn't that big a deal after all.

When I looked and saw that I had a whopping 13 new posts on the OOC thread after dropping the bomb on Rorse, I was afraid I was being taken to task. Glad to see good-old fashioned paranoia is still an effective plot device (unless of course, Sir Kheiron is just being paranoid in thinking there is a spy aboard)...
