@Herral Hinn –

Ahhh, love the addition of an NPC supporting cast. He’s really coming together. As for the claustrophobia custom drawback, how about using the already made Phobia rules from the GM guide? Basically make a DC14 will save or be frightened 1d6 rounds in tight quarters, otherwise shaken for as long as you are in tight quarters. Only gotta make the will save 1/day, the first time you encounter a tight space. It’d be considered a fear effect so whatever bonuses you can get from buffs would, logically, apply. Seems flavorful and also in line with the other drawbacks. The static will save DC also has the benefit that it would be more problematic earlier on, but as you gain power, your character would gain more control over it, both mechanically (will saves) and from an RP standpoint. What do you think?

@Davi

She’s gorgeous. I think I like her better than Mirode, and that’s saying something, cause Mirode was awesome. Davi simply has great campaign-long story hooks to build around. Also, I don’t think there’s anything I like better than trying to tempt my PCs to the dark side and observing how they deal with it ;) Mwhaha.

@Albion, on Inspiring Commander

Got the time to really sit down and look at it during some downtime at work. It’s hard to get a good feel on the numbers without actually seeing a character sheet, but initial thoughts:

 • I’d like to limit aid another from Inspiring Commands as a 1/round action, though still at move. The idea of spending 2 move actions to aid another twice and have the bonuses stack is a bit cheesy, considering the other buffs you have access to for aid another. I suspect that this was meant to be mitigated by the fact that you must roll attack against AC10 to aid another in the first place (and therefore put yourself at risk of a fumble, no matter what) but…AC10 is like…nothing, haha.
 • I’d like to remove the “in addition to her Dexterity modifier” clause from “Rapid Tactician” pertaining to the initiative bonus. The idea of the archetype gaining initiative from intelligence is awesome and flavorful, especially from that “battlefield commander” perspective! But stacking it with dex, which is already a really good multi-purpose ability score, is bringing it over the top. It makes it way too easy to have a +initiative in the crazy numbers really fast without even trying to.

Are any of these deal breakers for you? The rest can be handled if they become problematic in game, though right now I’m not seeing it. Of course, things could change due to unforeseen synergies in your build choice, so lets roll with the punches as they come, so to speak.

@Kubular

I like both of those options a lot. I look forward to seeing the rest of the build. Particularly the tragic tiefling take. That’s a really unique “origin story” for a tiefling that I have not heard before.

I hope that I was clear that I was more bothered with the class not meshing with the themes and goals of the campaign, not from a power perspective. Power can be fixed. Your fluff, however, is intrinsic to your character, which is why I’m choosing submissions based on fluff. I’m accustomed to tweaking balance during the game. (I’m running Wrath of the Righteous with full mythic in a face to face table right now, if you want to talk about fixing OP abilities, haha.) In general, I want my players to be capable of great feats of strength, You’re heroes in a fantasy epic, after all! Just not to the point that you ruin other people’s fun or turn the game into a player vs GM power scaling arms race. I’ve found that tweaking the players, rather than just constantly buffing monsters and constantly coming up with contingency plans, is a better solution, as long as the players are of the same mindset. I am of the opinion that balancing d20 games should be a collaborative process between GM and players.

Furthermore, I’m also used to tweaking things up not just nerfing it. If the logistics are getting in the way of a concept you want, we can try to work it out. For example, I did some tweaking to the Master Chymist prestige class for a player who REALLY wanted to be a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde crazy monster guy in Carrion Crown… but also didn’t want to be significantly punished mechanically for choosing the PrC. So we tweaked it, and he was the most memorable PC from that campaign as a result.

@Hogeyhead

Pertaining to your other issues with Inspiring Commander:

 • Aid another can add intel, but its limited to the number of Inspiring Commander levels you have. I’m open to nerfing it to “limited to +1 bonus for every 2 Inspiring Commander levels” or something similar, but I’m willing to see how it actually plays out in a game before any further measures are taken.
 • You can only grant a teamwork feat that you already possess 1/day, for 3 rounds for every 2 levels possessed. I don’t permit 5-minute adventuring days, so this is not over powered. Unless you think normal Tactician is already over powered.

Please don’t get into a optimization arms race with your fellow players. If you can’t trust me as GM to keep the game balanced and fair, you should withdraw your submission and find a GM you do trust. Everyone will have more fun this way.

Heehee. I've got five I play in and one I DM. I know I've got eight listed as being 'active' but the Hookscratch Inn is inactive and the Save/Rule the city ones are two sides of the same campaign. Plus the one I DM is just me and a friend playing so it should only count as half a campaign ;)

@GM: I really appreciate the feedback on the character options. I think I'll get started on that Tiefling. If I decide to go with Paladin, are the alternate Tieflings available? Demon-spawn flavorfully felt more appropriate to begin with, but doesn't do too hot on a magus.

I don't remember if I said this already, but I'm not currently in any PbPs and that this is actually my first time using the Paizo forums (Though I have used myth-weavers and giantitp for pbp before).

I am however, GMing a ridiculous game of Kingmaker at home.

Also, I have never played any of those modules before.

The Exchange

GM of Liberty that sounds good, although I doubt that 1/Day is embedded in reality, the second time I'll probably be just as frightened. However as a drawback, it should be flavourful rather than disarming and your take fits the bill much better than mine.

Overnight I have come up with two additional background items. The first is a small tie to Falcon's Hollow and possibly another PC. I intend for Herral to be meeting friends in the village with a view to starting a pie business franchise - very halfling. Probably another halfling "cousin" by marriage to one of his sisters.

Second, he needs a pony. It goes with the merchant image and helps with the low strength/carrying capacity issues you intend to track.

Finally you mentioned before that party balance isn't that important to you. So if we get a party of archers or healers then could we tweak our party slightly to cover things like disable device for instance?

Cheers

P.S. In case it matters, I am UK based, living on an island in the English Channel, but I can post during the day.

Hi GM of Liberty, on my phone right now, but wanted to let you know I see no issues with your proposed changes to Inspiring Commander.

Still, I would like to ask - how different is the class feature that adds Int to Dex for initiative, from... Say, Inquisitor adding Wis and Dex to initiative?

And I promise to have a crunch up today - I really do not tend to play broken characters, or ones that try to shine above the rest of the group. That is not my play style, nor the idea for this character (or I would not be taking Order of the Dragon).

Update: Currently in a 3rd game.

Okay! Here is Soroza 2.0.

She's human now, and I added the Divine Tracker archetype which trades my Wild Empathy for proficiency in my deity's favored weapon. Later down the line, it replaces my Hunter's Bond with the Blessings feature from the Warpriest. I will very likely select Charm and Trickery when that point is reached.

I'm also reworking her background to be from Cheliax. I feel like having been raised in that environment will help reinforce my idea of her as an inherently good person who often feels tempted to do the wrong thing for the right reasons. An altruist with a wrathful streak.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sorry, GM, forgot to do that part.

I'm in 2 other games at the moment.

@ Albion Actually I like your character and I like the fluff. I even like the archetype thematically. I do think that your character based on experience should be higher level like 3-4, but of course this is easily hand waived.

@ GM Okay perhaps I didn't express myself well. Neither power is truly overwhelmingly overpowering at first glance. As a side note in my opinion there is no problem with adding your int to init as well as dex, and there is no problem with adding it instead of dex. Both have precident and it just alters how powerful the abilities are.

My problem is that Inspiring commands (the psrt where you do aid another), and rapid tactician are move actions. Move actions! If you will note that the cavalier ability is a standard action. Additionally the ability to aid another as other than a standard action is not without precedent however in order to accomplish it you generally need to dedicate about 3-5 feats to do it, with half your equipment dedicated to giving a similar bonus to aid another as intelligence.

My point is that these abilities would be in line with Paizo balance if they were standard actions. As a cavalier tactician becomes a swift action at lvl 9 and it's a big deal.

@Urtnechnech

Crunch looks good. I’m wary about Reactionary. I prefer traits to be used to give mechanical flair to the character’s personality or backstory, not merely used as number padding for the sheet. So make sure you work in the bullying aspect into his fluff, or some other similar explanation that shows a reason as to why he’s so jumpy. Or, alternatively, pick more flavorful traits.

I also expect some cool background as to how he became a dancing dervish, a description of his dancing style, and an explanation as to why he rolls around with three different melee weapons. (Maybe has to do with that Reactionary trait?)

I’d appreciate it if you bumped him up to 18 years of age. That’s a personal neurosis of mine, it’s illogical, I know. I just don’t like seeing minors in overtly violent and/or sexual situations. I could barely get through the Game of Thrones series, those poor babies, they are too young…

@Kubular

Alternate tiefling racial stuff is fine, but make sure its relevant to the backstory. Don’t tell me he is qlippoth-spawn but the guy your dad made a deal with is a Balor lord, that makes no sense :P

@French Wolf

I think that making the character will save or be frightened every time you run into a tight space is a little too punishing. You can of course, play up the fear in your roleplay, but not necessarily to the extent that you have to run in the opposite direction a la “frightened”. 1/day seems like a good balance to have it come up enough to be relevant, and also some of the other drawbacks work on a 1/day paradigm. I won’t stop you if you want to roll will save more than that though…haha.

I like the tie to Falcon’s Hollow. I plan on putting up an Obsidian Portal wiki for the campaign, and will ask each player to link at least 1-2 NPCs to their character for me to sacrifice horribly to evil cults I mean… roleplay with and utilize ;D

Finally, yeah, I’m fine with last minute changes once the official party roster is updated. Sorry, this is my first big pbp as GM, I’m used to the table situation where people write out their character sheets as a group.

@Albion

Re: Initiative - That’s a fair point. How about we add the initiative bonus at level 2 and see how it gels out, same as Inquisitor. This is based on this feedback from a developer for Rite that states that the +Int modifier to Init was a separate ability at level 2, but was merged due to page space reasons. This also gives me the advantage of evaluating the Inspiring Command stuff independently and early. Thoughts?

@Soroza

Divine Tracker looks awesome. I like the Cheliax background. Very relevant to everything going on in Andoran.

@Hogeyhead

I don’t know, aid another at move (especially with the caveat that you can’t do it twice in a row) doesn’t seem too powerful to me. I could be wrong. Sometimes stuff looks meh on paper then works beautifully in game. I can definitely see how it could be breakable (especially if combined with certain magical items) but you know, stuff only gets broken if you go and break it. And also if the player goes out of their way to behave that way. My primary home group has 3 novices to tabletop, and 1 person with high system mastery. That one guy could easily run circles around the other 3 and make them feel useless. But he doesn’t. Because there is an innate social contract to games like this (if you’re not a jerk.). He doesn’t necessarily gimp his builds either. He just doesn’t pick the absolute most optimal choice of what to do every round of combat, nor does he boss them around and tell them what to do all the time.

If I go and ban stuff because it has the potential to be broken I’d probably ban barbarians (because this is a low level campaign and barbarians can be built to dominate level 1-5), pet classes, witches, zen archers, oracles (heavens) and summoners… and probably more than that which didn’t come to mind right away. But I didn’t, because I view over-optimization a problem of individual players and how they approach the game, not that of the classes themselves. No one is being forced at gun point to build multi-armed natural attacking pouncing eidolon monstrosities, after all. (note: I’m not trying to say hyper-optimization is badwrongfun, just that if I wanted to entertain those kinds of players I’d probably be running Rappan Athuk, not this.)

Anywho, that’s my last word on that matter, the rest I’m going to modify on the fly.

You are doing just fine. Bending but not breaking someone said or was that about a willow?

I ran my tabletop viking game this evening so the updates to Herral will happen tomorrow. But next week is beginning to look very busy at work due to holidays and a retirement so my presence on this thread may be greatly reduced.

Cheers

I have to agree that a ban on classes that can potentially be overpowered can ruin the flavor of how diverse the world is. A good example is the summoner that I have in PFS. At first, some people rolled their eyes until they saw that the summoner and eidolon were having arguments as what to do in situations, with the eidolon sometimes picking up the summoner so he didn't run off if he didn't like something, and the occasional slap because of an off comment. Plus I find it humorous that the 6'5" beast of a "woman" hides behind a 3'2" wayang during social encounters and at the sight of spiders.....

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@ GM That is a very very fair argument, and I must say you are absolutely right. We can always see what happens and go from there.

I just wanted to say I realize I might have come off too strong, if so I apologize, I was under some family related stress that clouded my judgment a bit.

Hogeyhead, thanks for the feedback on my fluff - it is appreciated.

GM of Liberty, thanks for reconsidering the Initiative 'thing' - lets give it a go at level 2 then ;)

To get it out of the way - I am currently in 8 campaigns: 5 of those are roughly 1 post a day, one is very active (usually more than one post a day, one is moving very slowly (about one post a week), and one is erratic, but almost always slow.

Fair enough. I'll look for something a bit more fluff-oriented to replace reactionary. I'm away from home for a few days, but I should be able to put together something in the next few days.

I thought I'd changed the age to 18. Must've been day dreaming.

Thanks for the input!

@albion

Oooh, looking good! I'm excited to see which traits you select for him.

I'd like you to work in a blurb about when/where your character swore to the edicts of the Order of the Dragon. I'm of the opinion that "oaths" (like the paladin oath) aren't something a person would take lightly...so I'd like to see what triggered Reknar to swear that particular oath. :)

I like that he speaks goblin. Nice tie-in to the fluff you have worked in so far.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Still mulling the traits over, but there are two things that really bother me:

- the fact that I end up with absolutely ZERO knowledges as class skills (I will spend ranks on them nonetheless, as I envision a bare minimum of two knowledges on Reknar - Local, and... Dungeoneering)
- the low will save :/

The first one may be solved if I decide to dip one or two levels in Lore Warden further down the road - in my head it would reflect the fact that Reknar has indeed learned there is much more to life, and even warfare than swinging a blade.

The second one could be addressed by the trait Carefully Hidden, or even dipping one or two levels of Martial Artist monk (if allowed of course). Again I would give it a twist, and since Martial Artist can have any alignment, it would simply mean that Reknar has improved on his fighting skills, and that's it - 2 levels in monk don't really mean any 'esoteric' abilities that wouldn't fit him thematically.

Okay, DM of Liberty, I've added the familial link to Falcon's Hollow and a donkey for my halfling ( but not called Bill).

I'll try to keep tabs on this recruitment but in case I forget, Blessings of Desna to one and all. May your application be filled with fortune.

Cheers

I got inspired to write a prologue for Davi. It's a bit longer than I intended, but it puts her in the right area for the campaign.

Prologue:
I push my way through the crowds surrounding me. It’s midday and the marketplace of Augustana is in full swing. Merchants hawk their wares, the shoppers move walk talk laugh push in on me choke me close in on me. A tiny piece of me scoffs at this; when has a crowd ever bothered me, I was practically raised in this marketplace, but it’s drowned by the sense that people are stifling me caging me in. Ahead of me I see a form flitting through the crowd. I have no clue who this woman is yet somehow I know she promises freedom from the suffocation and power to bend the world to my will and more if I would just catch up. I walk faster, I dodge through the crowds I falter. The scoffing voice in my head ignites with rage and I hold on to the anger as a crutch because I know who this is I know what this is. I draw my rapier and push faster through the crowd because b&#&+, I don’t know if stabbing you in my dreams hurts you but I’d love to find out I’m getting closer-

*WHAM*

The wagon bumps over a rut and Davi slams face first into a crate. “OW, crap that hurt.” The changeling rolls onto her back and rubs her nose. The man driving the wagon calls back to her.

“You alright back there?” Davi groans “Yeah I’m good, I just got my face reshaped by this box.” “Yeah, well you better not have damaged the merchandise.” Davi barks a laugh. “Good to see you’ve got your priorities straight Gorn.”

“Darn right” Gorn chuckles. “Well m’dear, we’re a good half hour from camping. If you wanna go back to sleep I’ll wake you then.”

Davi shakes her head even though Gorn isn’t looking at her. “Nah, I’m staying up. A crate to the face is better than a good cup of coffee. Takes all thought of sleeping out of your head.” She pushes herself into a sitting position and takes a look around.

The caravan stretches on behind the wagon, the rumble of all those wheels turning filling the air with a familiar melody. Interspersed with the wagons are guards, some walking some on horseback. Twisting to look forward Davi can see a line of green in the distance. They must be getting close to Darkmoon Vale.

Davi considers the approaching trees with a pit of anxiety in her stomach. She’s been winging it since the dreams started again. Running around without a real plan has been her thing for years. She’s loved traveling wherever the wind takes her, jumping into situations unknown, making up things as she goes along. Granted, that’s why she doesn’t have single copper to her name right now. But signing on as a night watchman for Trader Evan’s caravan has worked out well enough. They’re feeding her and they’re taking her in the direction she wants to go, and darn it that’s good enough for her. Davi leans back against the cargo and crosses her legs.

Her plan has three parts. Step One: Follow the Call...sort of. In half of her dreams she’s trailing the hag through a forest. She thinks it’s Darkmoon Vale based off the logic that the guess feels correct so it must be. So to the Vale she goes, or at least to a town outside it. Falcon’s Hollow. Step Two: See what happens. Make friends with the locals, or at least people that would care if some hag was dragging her off into the wilderness. Step Three: Send letter to parents. In a way that was the scariest part. She could imagine the lecture that was coming. But her parents would send her money, and then she could hire people to help her track the hag down and end her. Davi sighs and closes her eyes. She daydreams of a life free from her heritage until the caravan makes camp.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Crack* *Pop*

Davi pokes at the campfire with a stick. Behind her she can hear Gorn tending to the horses. The sun throws out its last faint beams of light as night descends on the campsite. Soon enough the majority will bed down for the night and Davi will be on duty. Bandits have been a problem in the region, especially a group that’s been sneaking into camps at night to rob the unsuspecting. Trader Evan, possessed of both extreme wealth and paranoia, hired on a group of people specifically to make sure that his precious goods stayed safe. Being possessed of perfect night vision made Davi an obvious choice for a night watchman.

“You ready for duty Sparkles?” An older gnome wanders over and plops down next to Davi. He hands her a ration bar and she nods her thanks. Stuffing half the bar in her face she sighs in contentment. “Mmm. Never thought I’d thankful for basic rations. That wandermeal they keep feeding us sucks.”

The gnome, Krolmnite, gives a huff. “Eh, you try not eating for a few days, you’ll be loving the taste of wandermeal. He gets a pointed look in return. After a few seconds the gnome chuckles. “It’ll still taste like eating chalk, but you’ll be happy for it!” Davi shakes her head and sets about finishing off the ration bar.

It’s not long until the two begin their slow walk around the camp. Slowly the camp quiets down until the normal sounds of night fill the air. The music of crickets, frogs and other nocturnal animals are broken by the occasional snore from a tent or shuffling movement from a pack animal. Davi revels in the quiet, the cool air that flows over her. Being on patrol clears her mind, lets her live only in the moment with no thoughts or worries about what lies ahead. All that matters is the present.

Davi and Krolmnite walk in companionable silence until the two pass by another patrol. The elf, Gilda, merely nods at the pair but the young dwarven man named Ramas passes Davi a small bouquet of flowers. Startled, she doesn’t respond as the patrols part ways. After a silent minute Krolmnite plucks the bouquet from Davi’s fingers.

“Sparkles, I think that’s for me.” he says, taking a deep sniff of the flowers. A smile cracks across Davi’s face. “Well, you are the prettiest old gnome for miles.” Krolmnite nods and sticks the flower in his belt. “Prettiest gnome for miles and mile” he agrees.

Davi’s told Krolmnite some of her troubles. Enough that he’s grown a bit protective of her. He’s a good friend and Davi’s going to miss him when they part. She’ll miss all of this; people to talk and joke with, the simple sound of wagon wheels, nights where she just walks in a big circle and fills her mind with the simple details around her. Time when she can shove her troubles and the calling to the back of her mind and just be herself. The night is calm and simple and she dreads what the dawn will bring her.

I just wanted to say that I'm still here, trying to refine my fluff. I've named my Tiefling Arthur Read. I still can't decide between Paladin and Magus. Fluff-wise, Paladin is starting to become a more obvious choice because I want my character to be a self-styled champion of freedom. On the other hand, I really like him being an intellectual sort, and there is already another Paladin in the ring. Also, I just usually feel like paladins are kind of boring to me.

I've also got an NPC hook in the works. But more on that later.

@Kubular

No need to pick paladin just for the LG-ness. A magus can be holier than any paladin ;)

I like the sound of a prologue, and will try to get one in after getting home. Getting these creative juices flowing after years of bottling up is fun!

prologue:
Creaking and moaning from years of travel and use, an old wagon and, even older still, dwarf (who was whistling a lively tune), slowly moved as his two ponies pulled at a moderate pace. Sitting in the back, Volreg was enjoying his roadside companion's cheerful tune while keeping an eye out for any roadside hostilities or blocks. While the road was relatively safe, sometimes bandits or other nasties would disrupt travel, especially of the traveler was a lone dwarf with a cart full of medicinal aid and alcohol, rather than two travelers. The sky was starting to cast off cooler colors as the sun started to set, bathing the area in an orange glow.

"Oi, I see that we may be catching up to the group ahead! Think we can maybe get close to them 'afore nightfall?" Turning around the dwarf smiled, showing off a toothy grin, one of his teeth flashing a vibrant yellow.

"You just want to see how much you can bless with your ale." Volreg sat up, and turned around to look ahead. "I don't think that we can make it before they get suspicious of our arrival, so I would say to maybe set up camp soon. Besides, what if you find someone who can out drink you?"

The dwarf scoffed, and poked the man's shoulder. "Cayden wouldn' think that one 'o his clergy be an improper drunk!"

Volreg laughed at the remark. "You take things too seriously! No wonder you and Ma were close friends!"

"Are still good friends, thank you very much! She used to cause so much trouble for everyone.... Always wanted to fight if she started to drink..." The dwarf started to ramble on as he slowed the ponies down as to start setting up camp.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Sounds of the night filled the air as well as a slight chill, which felt good on his skin. Volreg had decided to wash himself earlier, using the cleric's soap with permission, and walked off towards the river and finding a spot as to where his clothes wouldn't get wet or dirty.

It's good being close to home. One more ten-day, and I'll be eating Ma's food and helping about the farm until my first contract comes in.....

Drying himself off, and getting dressed, the tall Ulfen man, looked up the road once again, at the lights from various burning fires. While not a believer in a singular entity, he silently thanked to the Drinking Champion for his good luck in finding a good travel mate on his way home. Gently nudging the stout dwarf cleric awake for his shift, and being assaulted with curses and snorts, he had gotten into his bedroll for the rest of the evening.

"One day away from Falcon's Hollow you say?" Volreg asked, rolling over to face his traveling companion.
"Aye. May be even less if we pack up sooner. Now get ye' rest. Even if you ain't normal and can march better than my ponies, you need sleep."
"Yeah yeah....." Turning back over, to stare at the night sky, Volreg started to count the stars, but couldn't make it past twenty before falling asleep.

I think I have settled down on a Trait - World Traveller. To be able to add Knowledge (Local) as a class skill.

Loving the prologues guys, it gives me a better idea of what to expect in play :)

@Albion -

Refluffing of World Traveller is fine :o

Would an aasimar be acceptable? I've had an idea for an arcanist that would be either a White Mage or an Abjuration School Savant; baring that, an abjuration wizard would also fit the bill. Basically, a somewhat divinely inspired arcane magic user... I think that would fit well in Andoran and this campaign.

Originally I had the thought for a WotR campaign, but I think that kind of concept would work well in Andoran as well.

I was originally going to invent a new hunter in Falcon's Hollow but I found out that there's already a ranger NPC! I took a few creative liberties with him, but hunting down werewolves is sort of already in line with his duties as a deputy to the community's Sheriff.

It ended up being a bit longer than I wanted it, but I couldn't decide where else to cut it short.

Backstory:
“Papa, tell me a story! One with Knights and Dragons and Wizards in it!” the boy pleaded. It had been a long day at sea, and James Read was tired, but he loved his little boy. “Okay young sir, but we’re going to bed right after! Now let me see... a long, long time ago, there lived a great hero named Aroden…”

The stories would continue nearly every night, and James, now a retired wizard, pulled out his old tomes and extracted the fun bits from them, fueling his son’s imagination teaching him right from wrong with stories of noble warriors from ages past.

----

I found myself following Tabrik through the woods again. “Anthony,” he said, “you remember how there Ned Morrison ended up dead wandering through these woods? Any chance we can turn back and avoid the thing wot did him instead of running toward it?” Without missing a beat I said, “Aroden teaches that no problem can be solved by avoiding it. One must confront the issue or it will haunt one forever.” Tabrik grinned and replied, “That’s the spirit!” he tilted an eyebrow up at me right after and said, “But I’ve never known you to be the religious sort Anthony.” I replied, “I’m not. I just like reading.”

-------

Several years pass by, James’ salt and pepper beard is taking on a more silver color. His little boy Anthony is awkwardly tall and thin and showing the first signs of a fiendish heritage, hard scales, a short pointed tail, and small goat-like horns. Its his birthday, a big celebration is underway. At least, big for Chimera Cove. There was music, laughter and dance and Anthony danced his heart away hand in hand with his mother, Iolana. James was indebted to the girl. She's a woman. he reminded himself. When Anthony first started showing signs of fiendishness, his mother vanished leaving nothing but a note, saying not to follow her. Months of anguish passed for James until Iolana danced into town with a Barisian caravan and should have left the way she came. But she didn’t. Perhaps it was James himself she was attracted to, or the idea of stability and a home, or maybe she saw the sad, motherless Anthony and couldn’t leave him. Regardless, James owed his son’s happiness to her, and so his own. And the thought comforted him.

-------

I knew the werewolf couldn’t have gone very far. While we were walking we happened upon a steaming pile of feces which might have been left by a man, albeit a very large one, if not for the fingers protruding from it. I inquired, “He’s slowing down, isn’t he?” Tabrik poked through the feces with a stick. I wasn’t a tracker, but that was fresh s@~* if I had ever seen it. He looked up at me sardonically and huffed, “No, he’s just dropped a fat one while running at a full lope. Of course he’s slowed down!” I tried to refrain from shouting back at him. I huffed, “All right then, O Master Hunter, why don’t we keep our voices down so as not to alert him?” Some bushes about three yards to my right rustled faintly. I drew my sword, paced carefully toward the bushes and murmured, “You wanna dance? Let’s dance.”

--------

“Father, I’m old enough to know now.” Anthony demanded again. He was eighteen and he’d had enough. “I’ve seen the research in your study. You’ve been trying to make me human, to reverse some curse. I can read the Abbyssal script Father, I know that you’ve summoned a demon and that you tried to do it again. How could you? It’s a betrayal of everything you believed in!” James cast his gaze down and confessed, trembling, “I know. I’m so sorry son. You cannot begin to understand what happened that day. But I had to. My friends, the heroes in your stories, they were in mortal peril. No father should have done that to his unborn child, but I did. I had to.” Anthony stared at his father, horrified, “What am I then? Some demon’s puppet? A pawn in a dark game to come?” James knew that if he said the wrong thing at this moment, his son could be lost to him forever. James couldn’t know what plans the Demon could have for his son, but he had to believe that the boy still had free will. He grabbed him by the shoulders and locked gazes with him, “No. Your destiny is your own, son. No demon can take that from you.”

A beat passes, before Anthony says, “No, Father. And neither can you.”

---------

I tried to look as menacing as I could. I read that if you show a predator fear, it will attack you and probably kill you. I’d like to say that when the half-man half-wolf thing leaped out of the bushes at me, I stood my ground. But the truth is I’m not sure if the sound I made was a battlecry or the frightened shriek of a little girl. I had to give Tabrik some credit though, instead of shouting “Look out!” or something silly like that he immediately loosed an arrow at the thing. It didn’t score, but the cover fire gave me some breathing room. I twisted away from the werewolf then began my attack. I side-stepped around him and whispered, “Electrum” and felt energy crackle around my left hand. He was already wounded and bloody. I found the source of the bleeding and quickly jabbed my finger at it, and I was rewarded with a grunt of pain and the acrid smell of burnt flesh and hair. I thrust my sword into the base of his jaw. It didn’t take. The Werewolf swung at me, knocking into my armor, and I hoped that my ribs weren’t bruised. “Don’t move, Horace! I won’t miss this time.” Both me and the lycanthrope snapped our attention to the huntsman…

---------

Anthony is in his room, packing a bag full of his personal effects. Iolana enters and says, “Anthony, I know you’re upset but-” Anthony interrupts her without looking up, “Stop. you don’t have the right. You’re not my real mother.” He looks up to see that she’s got tears in her eyes. He leaves his bag on the bed and steps over to hug her. “Iolana. Mother. I didn’t mean it. You’re right I was upset,” I sighed, “but that’s not just it. I’m not a fisherman, and neither are you or Father. I have to leave. One way or another it’s in my blood.” As he picks up his bag, Iolana states, “You’ll write to us.” He smiles in reply, “Of course.”

--------

Almost three years ago I left my home. I was angry with my parents, my father mostly. They both kept too many secrets from me. Being part demon isn’t all bad, but I sometimes doubt whether I actually have a choice in the matter of what I’m doing. Like my whole life is being manipulated by some malevolent power. Killing that werewolf was one of those times. Tabrik was mollified. The werewolf, Horace, had been his friend several years before apparently. He taught the kid to track and that he was like a little brother. Tabrikcouldn’t loose another arrow at his friend, and the werewolf took advantage of Tabrik’s compassion. I was ready though, and skipped out of the way with ease. The fight didn’t last much longer and I put him down with my rapier. Tabrik spoke his eyes deadened, “I know you needed the coin Anthony, but let me bury him. I’ll make it up to you. You can stay in my house for a while.” I refrained from sighing and instead recited, “‘The only cure for grief is to grieve’. Bury him. I’ll find other work…”

-------

Anthony ambled around the bustling Sitting Duck scanning the room for his contact. He found him dining on some mystery meat, presumably venison, a slice of bread, and a tankard of mead. He approached the hunter, Anthony knew by reputation, and asked, “Tabrik Splint?” The dwarf dining alone turned up a solitary eyebrow and replied, “Aye, that be my name. Can’t say that I’ve seen you ‘round these parts though. State your name and business.” I had to speak a little louder over the din of the tavern-goers, “Anthony Read. I was told by a Sheriff Baleson you might have some work for me in the department of the local kobold problem.” Tabrik sat back in his chair and poured Anthony a drink, “Oh, we’ve got much bigger problems here than kobolds...”

---------

We arrived back in Falcon’s Hollow and reported back to the Sheriff. “Report” is a bit of an exaggerated expression, though, we stopped by at his home and chewed the proverbial fat for a while before Tabrik got to the werewolf crusade progress. I wasn't sure whether to be impressed or saddened when he told Baleson that the killer werewolf was his one-time pupil without batting an eye.

We buried any proof he was dead other than Tabrik's word, so I only got paid a meal ticket for my trouble. I didn't mind too much, these people had been trod on by Thuldrin Kreed for so long, they hadn't very much left to give me for work they actually needed done. When he was done I inquired Baleson, “Does anyone have any work for me? I can always go back to logging but I don’t feel I have the main strength to continue for very long.” Baleson chuckled, “Funny you should ask. Laurel is putting together an expedition...

@Nariel - Aasimar is fine. Divinely inspired arcane caster sounds interesting!

@Anthony read - Lookin' great. :D

GM Liberty.

I am interested.

I am not in any games at the moment.

Would you be willing to consider a Fetchling noble (son of a baron) who was shifted to the prime material plane when the house wizard had a serious miscue.

He is shell shocked, nearly broke and currently working as a caravan guard trying to get his bearings.

If you are willing I will take the first level as an aristocrat. As he learns more about his new life, he will move toward rogue at level 2 and beyond.

Alecks Var

If you're willing, I'll develop and submit before the end of the evening.

@Kewl Modie

Fetchling is fine. Andoran is a good place for one to get a life started without too much judgment.

Aristocrat is fine. Understand that you'll be level 1 through "Into the Haunted Forest" (which is fairly short) and "Hollow's Last Hope". That can take a long time in pbp, depending on how smoothly things go and how much RP happens.

Since it feels to me that he's a fish out of water kind of character, he won't have many specific goals in the region. That's not a big deal, but I do want to get a feel for where he will be going. So I'll want to know his primary motivations, morals, ideals, etc. Like how he'd feel about democracy, slavery etc. Religious ideals.

GM of Liberty, I have given it some thought and decided that a prologue is not going to happen. My posting tends to be much less than a novel, much more conversational and based off the rest of the party and my guy's reaction. That's not meant as a slight of the others, I enjoyed reading them.

If that counts against me then so be it.

Cheers

P.S. Herral is going to have an accent, Irish or Cornish but definitely celtish.

Backstory:
Alecks is the oldest son of Barron Var of Klegs Fen. The fen is part of an upstart kingdom of Kayal on the Shadow Plane. Historically the region was ruled by the ancient shadow dragon Astigrylkraxyx. When the dragon was killed by adventurers from the prime material plane and ancestors of the current ruling family, the kingdom of Dewarn was founded. After nearly 100 years, Astigrylkraxyx's absence was noted by other powerful beings; demons and dragons among them. Dewarn is being hard pressed to survive.
Klegs Fen was sacked and both the Barron and Baroness were flayed and eaten in front of their subjects. During the sacking young Alecks was secreted away by his mentor, Jemma and her husband, Gareth. The three were hunted mercilessly and in an attempt to allude their hunters they traveled to Falcon's Hollow on the prime material plane. Jemma decided that the group must "go to the winds," with the promise that once the pursuers were dealt with they would be reunited. Alecks was hired on as a caravan guard leaving Falcon's hollow the next day. Jemma and Gareth bought three horses and rode hard toward the rising sun.
Alecks is both hiding from his pursuers and searching for something; a tool or artifact that will allow him to triumphantly free his homeland from its oppressors. His dreams are haunted by the screams of the dying and the sight of his mother being torn asunder, yet he also hears the voice of Jemma assuring him that he is the chosen one... the liberator.

Notes: Jemma is a priestess of Cayden Cailean. Her husband Gareth is a Ranger. Alecks is an adherent. As is typical for one of aristocratic upbringing, Alecks is educated and well spoken. He is used to a life of comfort and has a hard time letting the past go. It is entirely possible that some of his actions have led to the continued success of his pursuers.

@Herral Hinn

No biggie. Don't force something against your style :)

People are selected based on how well they gel with the setting, how easily I can customize missions/quests and stuff to their character without having to drag the whole team really far away from what they want to be accomplishing, and whether or not they fit the pre-made modules. That can be accomplished in a small paragraph!

@Kewl Modie

Underneath the posting text box there's a little thing that says "How to format your text". The little hidden boxes are called spoiler boxes.

Looking good! Where does the trait, called, fit in? Sorry if I'm just missing it.

Dot. Im in 3 'active' games all of which are 1000+ posts.

@ GM of Liberty

My thought is that the "Call" is from Cayden through Jemma / Jemma's voice.
I can make it more explicit if it is too vague.

@Kewl Modie

Alright, gotcha :)

Man, poor GMoL is gonna have such a tough choice. I do not envy you one bit... and no hard feelings if I don't make the cut. These are some GOOD apps, and some tough competition!

Good luck to all!

Here is Wulfrun Taverner Cavalier of the Star for review. Ive never done a cavalier but I hope you enjoy the character outline.

@GM: I was wondering if I could reflavor the bite attack from "Maw or Claw" as a Gore attack with my horns. I should have a stat block ready tonight.

@ GM of Liberty.

I need to add three key bits to Alecks Var's Feats/Special Abilities.

1. Shadow Blending (50% miss in dim light vs. 20%)
2. Shadow Resistance (DR: cold 5, elecricity 5)
3. Disguise Self (Spell like ability) 1/day

and one skill modification
Stealth should be +5 vs. +3

I left these racial characteristics off my crunch.

Thanks

@Anthony Read

Reflavoring is fine as long as its clearly marked as such on the crunch

@Kewl Modie

Okay :)

Soroza's background and general appearance/first impression are up behind the relevant spoilers on this profile! I hope you enjoy the read. I wanna flesh out the detail of the end, when she leaves home, a bit but that will come.

Okay, got a good start on this character... description and personality are done, and background will follow tomorrow night. Her background will revolve around being raised in a temple of Sarenrae, only to discover her true talents are arcane in nature, though she retains her ability to heal (i.e. that's the impetus for healing powers, hence the White Mage archetype).

@Nariel Lauric & Kubular

Ah, forgot to mention, if you wish you can roll for the alternate tiefling/aasimar racial traits here on the boards.

Caveat: if you roll, you are stuck with the trait (reason being, some of the traits are undesirable, to balance out how some of them are very good)

Nariel is coming along nicely. I'm excited for her background. :)

Is there room still for a tiefling necromancer?

Tiefling: good.

Necromancer: no, the people I intend for the group to help in this campaign would reject/persecute outright necromancy. (There is actually a major necromancer villain in the area.)

edit: unless you mean a wizard specializing in the necromancy school, and not an actual "raising the zombies" guy, then yes, wizards who lub finger of death are fine ;)

I'd be chaotic good. I just, you know. Have interesting morals. I personally think that using a dead body for good reasons is better than letting it rot and do nothing.
