M Human Exp 1

Osmundus joins the group silently but makes it obvious that he has something to say.

Sera smiles and bows as Rory does.

Ny name is Seraphina Newton. It is a pleasure to meet you; and your brother Allen, as she rubs the kids hair. So what brings you here Rorry?

Kingmaker Table 1

Sorry for the delay, holidays...

Rory smiles and says, "The pleasure is all mine, I assure you."

"Contrary to what my brother might tell you, I'm here because of a slight misunderstanding as to whether a certain old coot belongs on the floor or not." He grins, "He didn't think so, but his manners told me otherwise. Anyway, I paid a very unfair fine, and I'm about to be on my way to see my father."

A guard who had apparently been following Rory out says, "You're going to see Lore? Can I come with you I want to speak with him, pick his brain about joining the army." The Clemanites remember Lore is the name of the man Origen told them would lead them to the bracers.

Rory rolls his eyes at the cadet, "Why don't I save you the trouble, he'll say, 'Don't bother,' then you'll say, 'But I want to serve Attica!' and he'll say, 'Work in a tavern, you'll do more good there anyhow.'" The cadet looks stunned at him scoffs and waves a hand blowing him off and returning to work. Turning back to Sera, he continues, "Sorry about that, my dad has the occasional fan problem to deal with. The opposite of which, funnily enough, landed me in here." Looking to the boy he says, "Come Allen, time to go." He meets Sera's gaze and says in an altogether different tone, "It really has been a pleasure, I hope to see you again," then to everyone, "All of you." He turns to leave.

Just then, with a sprung step and hurried voice, a tall, but rotund man in official robes addresses them, "Corporal Bertrand sent you? How might I be of service." A scar on his jaw and his massive arms betray his history as a soldier without his ramrod posture and aggressive demeanor. The Clemanites assume correctly that this is Captain Iyers.

Before you go Rory, where might you father be should I want to see you again? eyelashes batting like a hummingbird.

When the captain speaks up, Sera looks towards Maelius to let him address the official. Heaven forbid should she say something wrong.

Maelius nods at Captain Iyers and gives him a brief smile trying to be professional and to the point. Thank you for your attention Captain, Corporal Bertrand was kind enough to direct us to you. I am Citizen Boni and this is Citizen Newton, we have only recently arrived in Gisli from Cleman looking for opportunity. We've made the acquaintance of a leather working Sylph family that has unfortunately run into some hardship. Their son was off hunting in the plains north east of town acquiring extra supplies for their business when he disappeared. All we ask is that the guardsmen posted in the region keep an eye out for him. Both Ms.Newton and I would be greatly appreciative of your efforts.

Rory blushes and quickly looks at his feet to hide it. "The Dancing Hop. It's an inn in the east quarter just before the tree line. Just keep your nose up for man-smell," he chuckles, "You can't miss it!" His brother still over his shoulder, Rory says goodbye and half-dances down the street, Allen can be heard grunting and giggling in succession.

Captain Iyers grimaces visibly at the phrase "leather working Sylph family," but his expression brightens when Mael mentions they're from Cleman. When Mael finishes, Iyers replies, "You're from Cleman are you? Good little town that, stayed at the Blurred Hearth once, I compare every inn to that one now! How are those little gnomes doing?" He catches himself and says quickly, "Of course, of course we'll send a search party out, I'll lead it myself. Honestly, we would've done before," he continues in what was meant to be a hushed tone, but just came out gravellier, "but some of the citizens around here say we're wasting their tax dollars when we do anything for non-citizens." Back to his regular voice, "But since you've asked, no one can tell us anything." He pauses a bit and looks around. "I assume one of those girls is here somewhere, eh?"

Tena peaks out from behind the large chained criminal on the benches next to where Allen was sitting, she grins at the Captain. "You'll show me and my troop the way, won't you?" Tena grins, rushes over and kisses the captain haphazardly on the face, landing awkwardly on the corner of one eye. He laughs a jolly laugh, and indicates for her to lead the way.

On their way out, Tena thanks the Clemanites profusely, "My family simply can't thank you enough."

The Captain also turns, "Do you two...er...three," He corrects himself, seeing Oz, "Want to join us? We're short-handed, and I'm sure my men would rather spend their afternoon at their usual posts. There's a day's wage in it for you..."

Well aren't you a peach?, Sera says as she gives the guard a hug as well to show her gratitude. I knew you would be able to help. As far as the offer to join you, only if my friends say yes. A young lady such as myself shouldn't be out on my own ya know, a smile on her face as she plays up her "dainty" stature.

Sure, I wouldn't mind either... don't know if I'd be of any use in a fight but.. it would be good to find Tena's brother and get a happy end to this story Maelius says, smiling.

M Human Exp 1

Seeing the soldiers leave, Osmundus bursts out quietly with his news. There's a very deep set institutional way of discrimination going on against the lesser...common...umm...rarer races, here. There aren't just a few that have gone missing, but a whole rash of them. The wrong guards finding out what we're looking into just might be trouble. They all know about it. It's common knowledge, but they can't be citizens, and have no voice...or rights...at all. I'm not in a much different boat, and this could get ugly.

Osmundus quickly looks around, and resumes his usual amiable smile.

Male Human Warrior/3 | An Attican Adventure

"I'm sorry sir? Did you say something? I'll understand if you'd rather stay behind, but your friends have already said they're ready to go." Captain Iyers is doing a good job of being respectful in spite of his noticeably growing impatience.

Sera looks at the guard, lead the way sir. I am still new to this quant town. Where should we start?

Walking into the guard office is a young man slightly taller than average and well-built, his brown hair short, similar to a military haircut, his brown eyes alert. Dressed to travel; his gambeson and kilt made of heavy hide, his round shield strapped to his back, his club and short spear tucked in his belt, his rope and blanket worn like Bandoliers. He is holding a piece of paper in hand.

As He walks in the room his step slows to a halt, obviously not expecting so many people. He regains his courage and walks up to the captain. He begins to reach to shake hands, he then stops and starts to salute, seeming to realizing the inappropriateness of a nonmilitary individual saluting, he puts his hands behind his back and nods, then remembering he has the letter in his grip he hands it to the captain and shuffling his feet as he stares at the floor clearing his voice and says

letter:

To Baron Escher Iyers, Captain of the Guard

In response to your request for volunteers to search for the lost sylph boy; a member of my house hold has asked to assist you. Taldo the Nephew and apprentice of Taidhg the tanner, my indentured servant, has requested to assist you. Taldo claims friendship with the boy and his family. Due to their amicable business relationship with the sylph family Taidhg has asked that Taldo be permitted a leave of absence to be of assistance.

So I, Lucius of Gilsi, have given my permission for Taldo a non-citizen, under his majority, apprentice and Nephew of Taidhg the tanner who is an indentured servant in my household. I have determined Taldo’s apprenticeship complete and I release Taldo the Tanner into your care to be of service until he reaches his majority or until you deem his assistance is no longer of service. If I may be of further assistance please contact me.

Your fellow citizen and servant to the Empire Lucius of Gilsi, sometimes called Lucius the butcher

I…I…I…I w..w…w…want to h..h..h..help, s..s..sir

Encouraged by his bold statement, he looks up giving a slight smile and making eye contact with the other people in the room.

Male Human Adept 1

A man with shaggy blond hair steps into the guard office soon after Taldo, just in time to hear him offering his services. He is dressed in woolen robes with a thick cloak draped over his shoulder. The man adjusts his half moon spectacles as a smiles creeps over his face. With a harsh tapping of his staff as he strides forward into the room.

"I'd like to see where this adventure may take me. Count me in as well."

Male Human Warrior/3 | An Attican Adventure

Captain Iyers takes the note and reads it, then smiles up at Taldo, "Had your hopes up did you? Well, I'm glad we could deliver this time." He turns to Dominic, "The more the merrier! Off we go!" The Clemanites and the Gislites any suggestion for a new name for you guys? That's gonna get annoying... follow Tena out of the main entrance of the city. As the sun begins to set, the shops are packing up, the homeless are retreating into their alleys, and the guards are posting up, getting ready to lower the portcullis. Iyers, gets them through the guard tower to the other side, and it's not long before Tena leads everyone to the spot where she last saw her brother up the road aways and northeast up a hunting trail a bit.

The Captain looks at the group. "It's been a while since I was in the field last...anyone got a clue on how to find this brother of hers?"

Male Human Expert/1-Court Bard/1 HP 8/14 | AC 16 T 12 FF 14| F 0 R 4 W 3 | Int +2 | Per +3 | Bard Perform 6/7

Maelius scratches his head as he considers how far out of his element he is. Uh, what kind of supplies was he gathering Tena?

Taldo makes eye contact with Tena as she leads the party out of town, he keeps his gaze down as the rest of the team passes by him and he quickly takes up the rear of the procession, knowing his place as a non-citizen.

Stepping outside the city gates Taldo smiles and looking into the sky he breathes the fresh air in deeply, happy to be away from the smells of the tannery. He starts daydreaming about being a soldier in the empires legions...

When the group starts talking about finding the brother he really needs a name LOL Taldo refocuses on here and now, realizing how little he really knows about his sylph friend or his sister Tena or their whole family.

As the hansome, if not short, blond haired youth asks about supplies Taldo perks up, if the supplies are for tanning he may know where to buy them.

Kingmaker Table 1

The reason I hadn't been saying it before, is because I couldn't remember if I'd given him one yet. I looked it up, I hadn't. Sorry 'bout that.

Tena looks at Maelius strangely, "Chase was on a hunting trip. When my father said 'replenish our supplies' he meant 'hunt down animals for hides that we can use to work leather.'" She looks at the ground, ashamed that she never paid enough attention to Chase when he was teaching her how to track, but she takes a look anyway. Survival: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 She excitedly takes a few steps forward to a few leaves, brushing them away she gasps, "A boot print! I think it's his!"

They follow these tracks for about 30 minutes at a slow pace due to their having to find and uncover Chase's old boot prints. At this point, though, Tena's expertise runs out. Survival checks? Perception checks? Whatever you think will help, break it out!

Taldo, wanting to help his friend and to impress the captain, listens carefully to every word. when the trail "runs out" he quietly helps look through the underbrush for any signs of Chase's path.

Dominic was never one for the outdoors, it didn't seem to have any of the comforts he found nestled between old tomes. He was out of his element and it showed as he gazed around wide eyed, looking for ...something... He honestly wasn't even sure he could tell the boot prints from another hole in the ground.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Sera is self absorbed, trying to figure out where first to check. She looks up, and there are two new people there that she swears weren't there before.

My name is Sera, it is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance. I welcome any help in finding Tena's brother

Sera follows everyone outside. She bundles herself up in her cloak. She watches as others find tracks that may or may not lead to Chase's whereabouts. She tries to help out by pinpointing any other boot prints. She looks for a few moments.

Captain, what about these over here. Are they the same type of boot print as the orhers Tena found?

per: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Kingmaker Table 1

Between the two of them, Taldo and Sera find and identify a new set of tracks. With Tena's leatherworking knowledge the three of them can see that they are not boot prints at all, but rather shoe-prints. The kind made by shoes which might be worn by a scholar who spends a lot of time on his feet. They even reference Dominic's as an example.

They are able to follow these prints a short distance before they disappear as well.

Just as the troop is about to despair Dominic spots wheel tracks, like those made from a small cart.

"But who would be using a cart all the way out here?" Iyers thinks aloud, "But then you'd need one if you were in the habit of carrying off burly hunter-types on a whim...Let's go!" As the team, little by little, follows the cart trail, the man Captain Iyers once was is becoming more clear to them. The years of boredom and politics seem to fall away from him like dust off a sword which had since served as a trophy on the wall of an aristocrat, but is being used once again.

As night falls, the trail leads the troop to the mouth of a cave in the foothills of Granite Mountain. This aptly named land formation was the cornerstone in Gisli's foundation as a trade city in years past, but has since been mined through and emptied. Map created, see link beneath my name.

Taldo, bringing up the rear, watchs and listens as they talked about shoe prints and cart tracks. He begins to worry for his friend

What does this mean for Chase, did he meet up with someone, what happened to his boot prints, why would he change shoes? Why would his prints disappear? Could someone be carrying him? That’s odd. There no signs of a struggle. If you have a cart why carry someone too it.

If anyone had been watching Taldo they would have seen him rubbing his hands together, when he caught himself he stopped and began to watch Captain Iyers to distract himself,

I knew he was a great man

The distraction did not last, Taldo stopped for just a split second, but quickly started moving again

Is Chase running away from home? I’ve thought about it, why would he run from his family they seem so close…but to be out in the world who hasn’t thought about just leaving

As night falls, the trail leads the troop to the mouth of a cave in the foothills of Granite Mountain. When the troop stops Taldo unties his bag from its place, and opening it he removes his flint and steel. Lifiting them so everyone could see he clears his throat and asks

T..T..Torch? d..d..does any..any…anyone have a..a…a…a torch?

I hope your not a cat Maelius, otherwise curiosity may kill you, Sera says with a chuckle.

Can we wxplore it, sure we can. Should we though? Anyone know what type of animals lives in caves; bear, wolf, other things which could probably tear us to shreds?

she's probably right, but I want to explore the caves too

Taldo not willing to give up the pursuit so quickly and wanting to look brave for the captain, slouches a little and shifting his feet looking carefully at them asks

W..w..won't a..a..a t..torch..ch..ch..chase, I..I..I m..m..mean s..s..s..scare th..th..the b..b..b..beasts?

Male Human Expert/1-Court Bard/1 HP 8/14 | AC 16 T 12 FF 14| F 0 R 4 W 3 | Int +2 | Per +3 | Bard Perform 6/7

It's very odd. Maybe it's not animals we need to worry about? The cart means people, people who might have Chase. I'm not, uh, good in a fight.

Male Human Adept 1

"I've read some books on how to fight...once...I think" Dominic grins sheepishly as he searches his bag for something. Soon he produces a torch and hands it to Taldo.

"Of course I have a torch, been waiting for this for years!" He says with a wink.

Taldo, suddenly realizing that all eyes are on him; quietly kneels and begins strikes the flint with the steel, after what must have been hundreds of times and seeming like hours, Taldo finally lights the torch. Quickly picking it up off the ground, to make sure not to smother the flame. He tries to hold it so he can put up his flint and steel; first between his legs but he nearly drops it, then under his arm using his elbow and almost burns his shirt, then he starts to place it under his chin and feeling the heat on his face he wisely decides other wise. He finally offers it back to Dominic in a small pleading voice asks

p...p..p..lease h..h..h..hold

offering the torch to Dominic sounding and looking like he had failed the world. after someone takes the torch Taldo will kneel back down and put up his flint and steel and then return to the back of the party.

Male Human Adept 1

Dominic chuckles, claping Taldo on the back, "Of course, it would be my pleasure." He takes the torch back from Taldo now that it is lit, holding it aloft and illuminating the area around them.

"So, who would like to go into the dark and spooky cave first?" His voice quivers with anticipation and his eyes are alight with excitement; the first steps of adventure were finally at hand!

Male Human Expert/1-Court Bard/1 HP 8/14 | AC 16 T 12 FF 14| F 0 R 4 W 3 | Int +2 | Per +3 | Bard Perform 6/7

Makes sense that the man with the torch should go first Maelius says amused at the newcomer's enthusiasm. Dominic right? I'm Maelius.

Male Human Adept 1

Dominic noticeably jerks as his mouth drops open and his spectacles slide down his nose - almost comically. "My apologies! I have forgotten to formally introduce myself all this time! My name is Dominic Tryst, a Librarian from a small town over yonder." He gives a quick bow as he introduces himself followed by a small dismissive shrug upon mentioning his town, continueing, "The town itself is of little significance other than the presence of my Father's old book shoppe...which is now *ahem* on loan to the Forum ever since he made the mistake of taking trade in lieu of coin." Dominic takes a moment to fix his glasses with great care. "I am working along side Men of the Forum in order to help maintain proper care of their Great Library - until such a time as they do away with me I suppose. However, at this moment I am Dominic the Torchbearer; Fear-er of Nothing!" He laughs jovially and moves forward in order to light the way.

"When we all are ready give the word, I'd hate to leave any of you in the dark!"

Taldo watches and listens as Dominic boldly takes the torch. As he offers the torch asking who would bravely go into the cave first; Taldo mentally belittles himself as he stands frozen by his own incompetence.

I want to take the torch, I want to show the Captain how brave I am, who am I kidding, I can’t even hold the silly thing and pick up my own fire starter…I must steel myself if we are to help Chase.

As Maelius, seemingly without a care in the world, encourages Dominic, Taldo listens to Dominic's tale, imagining the little shop, the books, the library in the forum. Taldo realizes how inadequate he is.

No wonder he’s so bold, he must be really smart “I am Dominic the Torchbearer; Fear-er of Nothing” that fits him…that must make me “Taldo the toad, terrified of torches”

With a heavy sigh, Taldo arms his shield and short spear, bringing up the rear he smile slightly and stammers out

R..r…ready T..t..torch..b..b..bearer

Male Human Warrior/3 | An Attican Adventure

Captain Iyers brandishes his musket, and says, "Maybe I should go in first there, Mr. Tryst, seeing as I seem to be the only one here with actual fighting experience..." Just in case, he loads his musket before heading inside.

Marching order: Iyers, Dominic, Maelius, Seraphina, Taldo...unless anyone has objections, we'll press on a little, nothing serious, just an intro.

As the party enters the cave it becomes quite clear to everyone that this is no ordinary cave, if it is a cave at all. The walls seem to be machine hewn masonry, and reinforced with wooden framing. The floor seems to be the same stone, but it appears tiled with large (2.5' by 2.5') blocks. But the main thing everyone notices exiting the warm, coastal, post-rain air is the coolness. This and the pitch black darkness outside of the reach of the torch are the only things that support this place being called a "cave." Ahead, they can all see the long straight corridor they entered ends in a T-intersection.

Actions?

As he is enveloped in the dark, and the adrenaline begins to flow; Taldo's nerves settle down, he begins feeling more excited and less anxious. He continue to look around carefully, even trying to see the tracks from the cart, occasionally looking behind to make sure they are not being followed.

Seraphina lets the tough men go first. She is a healer at the temple, she bareky knows how to use her dagger, and that was only once to fend off a mugger. She lost a few coins, but she lived through the experience. Ironically the mugger then needed treatment for a light wound to the wrist so everything was fair.

Sera walks into "cave" system and her mouth drops at the intricate tile work, Wow, this is beautiful. The stonework is beautiful, not as beautiful as home, but still. So, Mr. Ithers shall you lead the way?

She listens and keeps an eye out for anything of interest as she walks along.

Sorry, I only put the link under my GM alias. I'll put it in Iyers' too, so you'll have access to it. "An Attican Adventure" is the link you want for the map. Rule of Thumb: if you can see it on the map, your character can see it. Also, as long as the torch is burning, you can see the ceiling, it's not very high. The grey squares are dim light (outside of the normal range of the torch, but within the improved range)

"It's Iyers, actually, like a drunk man agreeing it's your turn to buy a round," he does his best drunk man impression, which isn't very good, "Aye, yers..." he gets quite a chuckle out of that. He's clearly been waiting to tell that joke for a bit.

Sera can see the foot of a pillar in the hall in front of them. No one else can tell anything else about this place or where the cart went.

GM:
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

After Mael flips the coin, Iyers says, "Good enough for me!"

Iyers presses forward, and when the light hits the corridor, it's clear to everyone that the pillar Sera noticed was one of a series lining the hallway. Cobwebs and water stains mar what could've been a sight given a bit of care and light.

PS: I moved you all into the same hallway so that no one would be in the dark when Dominic rounded the corner...you may want to consider lighting another torch.

From the intersection, they can see the hall to the left goes west and ends in another T-intersection. In front of Iyers, they can see an old wooden door, and a hall leading north. He looks intently at the door and says, "This door has not been used in a long time," he tries it, "Yeah, it's stuck. Do you want to break through here or take the hallway north? Or would you rather go back the other way?"

Then if that doesn't seem to work Maelius will start singing a lullaby in what he hopes is a soothing voice to let the creature know that they don't mean to be hostile.

Standard Action start Performance and that should be it for my first round action.

Male Human Adept 1

Dominic's hand moves to adjust his glasses, a nervous habit. "I-I-I'm not sure." He stammers out, his brain finally slowing enough to stammer out a sentence. "I know a few languages, but I'm -uhhh- not really familiar with this tongue."

He rubs his temples, trying to come up with a solution. "If it's inquisitive...maybe it doesn't want to attack? I don't know if it will understand us though."

Dominic, still keeping hold of the torch, moves his hands up slowly and keeps a palm open, showing himself to be unarmed. He says, slowly and clearly, "We mean no harm, do you understand?"

Kingmaker Table 1

Sorry, edited, forgot it wasn't the elemental's turn.

Iyers instinctively points his musket at the creature, but when he sees the others trying diplomacy he lowers it and joins in. Putting the gun away, he raises his hands also to show that he is unarmed, but makes no attempt to speak. That's never been his forte.

I know a spell to be able to understand the creature, but it may think I am hostile. Mother, forgive me should this go wrong

Sera will cast comprehend languages, hoping the strange creature doesn't view her as threatening.

ignore discusss poist, sticking with it

I will not let this thing hurt my friends

Taldo shifts his shield from his shoulder slowly to his left hand; taking an obvious defensive position, not moving his feet or right hand, not making eye-contact with the creature, getting as small as he can in the doorway, so if the captain needs to fire over him he can. as he opens his mouth and tries to speak, he just very softly whispers

Sssshhhhh

Kingmaker Table 1

After casting her spell, Sera thinks back to what the creature said, and this time, understands its words. See Auran spoiler

The wind sees the acts of diplomacy, as well as Sera covering herself in bright light, and the small one before it take up its shield. It also hears a beautiful song. In response, the howling of the wind dies down, though the creature remains in its place and, after staring at them a moment, raises its arms.

This appears to be a defensive position more than anything else

Sera focuses and the creatures speech becomes clear in her mind. Although she has no idea how to communicate back, she speaks to the group on the creatures behalf in a way.

It wants to know who we are and why we are here. Although I don't know how to get that message across.
