As you approach the ship you see the 20-30 Grindylow still intent on breaking through the decks of the Diademe. They don’t seem to have noticed you yet, but one or two of them tilt their heads to the sides as you draw nearer.

a good stealth check will allow you to avoid notice. -You guys are about 30 feet away from the infested ship.- Getting to it will take about 3 rounds of rowing.

Making note of the lack of grindylows in the water Anatha will whisper to his boatmates.

There don't appear to be any of the nasties left in the water. When we get to the ship I think Grunval and I should give cover fire from down here while you guys go up and clear a foothold on the deck. Then we can join you and finish this whole unfortunate business.

Probably not, but we will be able to see anyone that peeks their head over the side to attack the boarding party while they climb. Those are the people that I figure we ready attacks against.

Grunval, I think you forgot to refill your HP bar...we all got healed before we left the ship.

If there's an area of the boat that has less grindylows than the rest, Gnixgnox will say that they should head to that part, to give them more of a chance to climb aboard before they're attacked. (Say, if they're all trying to break down a door in the rear of the ship, he'll suggest going to the ship's front.)

As the sun is just beginning to rise over the still dark sky, the two rafts begin to make a break toward the side of the ship, rowing quickly and loudly. You make it to where you are in this Link and Alayne then hands Hanzir a grappling hook with rope:

A few of the Grindylow you could see aboard the ship jump off into the dark waters below and toward the rafts. And a few more move to the railing to see the rafts.

Please role initiative, perception, and take your actions. The four Grindylow in the water you can't actually see, that is just where they jumped in, they could be anywhere... Sorry Hanzir, I didn't do this just because you said that... :P

The blast of air from Grunval takes out a Grindylow that was in the process of jumping into the water, but was slammed against the side of the ship. An arrow from Anatha scathes another Grindylow. More Grindylow from the ship jump down into the waters where your boats are, they could be anywhere around you... Visibility=Terrible

Hanzir's grappling hook catches the rail of the ship, just as more Grindylow jumped off. You may now try to move the boat closer to the side of the ship for a low DC climb check or start climbing now for a higher DC

You see the other raft throw its grappling hook but miss...

Perception DC 20:
The waters around your raft occasionally splash even though you can't see the cause...

They come all at once, springing out of the water and shouting their ravenous battle cries. The fragile wood of the boat rocks from side to side. The cord of the grappling hook swings wildly.

Alvin grabs a scalpel from his bag and jams it in the eye of the grindylow that sprung at him. It falls back, hissing.
Alayne’s cutlass slashes out at the surrounding grindylow. Two of them fall back.

Alvin is the "crew" in your boat, just so you know.


Gnixgnox lunges his lance at the closest grindylow, screaming in frustration when his attack misses, again.

Anatha drops his bow down into the boat beside him and struggles to bring out the spear that he salvaged from one of the slain back on the ship. He uses it to strike out at the grindlow directly infront of him.

Potential Damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

While the others miss, Hanzir and Anatha are each able to take out a Grindylow with their weapons as they strike. More Grindylow jump out of the water to continue to attack your boat as well as the other one.

A Grindylow staps Hanzir in the arm:

Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

A Grindylow strikes a gash across Anatha's face:

Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

A Grindylow attempts to strike Kaylee but misses:

Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

A Grindylow attempts to strike Grunval but misses:

A Grindylow buries it's spear in Gnixgnox's leg:

The boat begins to rock back and forth with the weight of the attacking Grindylow. Everyone role an acrobatics check with their next action to attempt to keep the boat steady.

Acrobatics Check:
If you get a 5 or lower you fall prone on the deck. 10 or lower you take a -2 to hit and damage. 11 - 20 you are unaffected. 21 and above you use the swaying of the boat to your advantage, gaining a +2 to hit and damage.


Gnixgnox drops his lance in the dinghy and slips his axe out of the loop on his belt. He swings the axe at the grindylow closest to him at the corner of the boat.

Acrobatics: 1d20 - 6 ⇒ (15) - 6 = 9 = -2 to attack and damage, factored into the rolls, below

The grindylow move in to attack.

One of them stabs at Kaylee. The other one stamps at her.
Stab: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
The stabbing one misses.
Stamp: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
The one that stamped, unlike his partner, manages to stamp Kaylee. There might be something to this whole stamping thing.
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Ouch.

Avoiding Grunval, a grindylow sidestepsswims to the side and takes a stab at it. At GnixGnox.

He didn't even need to stamp.

The spear catches GnixGnox, piercing the wood of the dinghy.

The grindylow next to Anatha strikes at him.

The grindylow next to Alvin, which also has a scalpel in it's eye, tries to stamp Alvin.

All of a sudden, the boat stops shaking.
Thunk Thud Crunch. A grindylow tentacle breaks through the bottom of the ship.
no water is coming in yet, as the tentacle blocks that off. once water comes in, the boat will sink after 5 rounds. Additional holes will increase the speed. Bailing will slow it down. Only one bucket in a dinghy though. Also, no need to roll additional acrobatics checks.

EDIT: @Anatha - You don't have to roll fortitude save for the potion this time if you don't want to.

Seeing the tentacle burst up through the deck of the boat Anatha sees an opportunity to take advantage of "higher ground". He spins and shoves his spear at the tentacled beast. (Melee attack from higher ground: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7) but the spear catches on the deck just to the side of the hole, leaving a nasty divot in the wood.
