Survival take 10 for 17.

Warpac gravitates towards Boudra, a female dwarf from a local dwarven town recently recruited. They soon match strides and strike up a conversation about the glories of past dwarven empires, a topic Warpac has only typical schoolhouse knowledge of. She dispels a few misconceptions, the kind a civilization typically introduces when writing its own history. The conversation drifts towards weather, as it always seems to do at one point or another, and Warpac offers and requests some advice.

"With these winds and the rain that is sure to come, I am worried about slipping or landslides. Got any suggestions?"

Boudra answers, "I heard your warning before and took an opportunity at the last stop to put on some spiked boots." Boudra kicks her heels up a tad bit extra and shows off her spikes to Warpac's amusement and approval. His mustache stars to quiver. Nothing like a set of nicely toned dwarf calves! Is she flirting?

"No stranger to treacherous footing, are you? My boots are sturdy, but built more for the long distance striding suitable for a caravan. I'm not sure what to do about the coming weather other than to step lightly."

Boudra eyes him speculatively, a bit longer than necessary... prehaps? "Justt stay close to me. Consider me a bulwark to lean on should you need it."

Now THAT was a coy look if I ever saw one. Indeed! It's been a long time, Warpac, don't lose your wits. A pretty calf is not where you want your attention right now! Then again...

Bom watches Warpac and is impressed. Warpac was fairly off-putting by way of personal charisma, but Warpac seemed undaunted. In truth, this was Bom's first encounter with Hellknights. They seemed much more approachable than rumors would suggest. In particular, the middle-aged but heavily armored Patronicus and Bom had struck up a conversation on the utility of shields,

Bom: Being a student of Gorum, I have learned to use this heavy shield with finesse. Though the spikes tend to snag on friend and foe alike.

Patronicus: Yes, ever since it was discovered that spiked shields don't have any effect on shields of bashing, the shield spikes have fallen out of favor.

She attempts to impress them with her knowledge. "The Mandates of Karsus were applicable in many cases of civil law, but they were replaced by the Statements of Eternal Faith implemented upon the beginning of the rule of House Thrune. With that in mind, the farmer who attends services is entitled to a fair price for his land from the government."

Well done all :) Thank you!

Shortly before the end of the fourth hour the first signs of corruption appear. This area is marked by strange deformations. Large boulders and rocky outcroppings droop and sag on the side of the mountain, as if they were made of putty instead of stone. Moreover, the trees are twisted and warped into loathsome shapes. Each tree is covered with wooden growths shaped like writhing tentacles, grasping claws, and toothy mouths. The ground squishes underfoot and thousands of earthworms wriggle atop the soil.

Signafier Karva expresses a deep concern over this strange change in the terrain. "We will stop early. See what we can find out about that place. I am sure it is a sign of the chaos," she says.

Kn (arcana) DC :
The deformations were caused by soften earth and stone and warp wood spells.

KN (nature) DC 15:
The worms covering the ground are behaving unnaturally. Vermin and insects are sometimes drawn to the surface at the call of unwholesome magic, or perhaps because they fear something even worse below ground.

Clumps of earthworms wriggle up from the ground and crawl all over the feet of the explorers.

Silas nods knowingly. "These are telltale signs that demons are about. Earthworms, like spiders and all other vermin, are attracted to places with lots of demonic activity. Keep your eyes open."

So with Silas I try a different tack on the idea of having such a low Intelligence. There's a saying that the opposite of knowledge isn't ignorance but the illusion of knowledge. Silas "knows" lots of things that are false, or true for the wrong reasons. Feel free to correct him, but he's unlikely to be convinced...

Warpac, unfortunately, does not have access to that spell. And, since he is chaotic good, probably would not get much use out of it anyway. However, he will fire up a detect magic spell every minute or so and give the area a scan to try and pinpoint issues.

As they travel, poor Boudra grows increasingly quiet, the chaos of the area obviously causing her great discomfort.

"Signifier, may I have a word?" addressing Karva and awaiting permission to speak.

Provided he is given permission, he adds, "The chaos does not seem to bother me much. I would like to ask permission to take point and bear the brunt of any assault. I suspect the other pathfinders would also feel the same, whether or not they too find the chaos in the area discomforting."

The landscape remains unchanged and in some ways the strange formations get thicker as the party marches for the next hour. The sky has grown really dark, and the winds are picking up. Before the end of the next hour the winds has become so severe it becomes difficult to hear and visibility drops significantly. Torches are of no use as the wind blows them out, but a lantern fortunately provides some light.

There are no small characters correct? Any familiars or other tiny creatures?

At the end of that hour the path is blocked by a steep scree of gravel and shifting rocks. No other paths are apparent so Signifier Karva calls for a halt to examine the slope. The stones are slick with rain and a howling wind rips through the mountain pass, drowning out all other noise. At the bottom of the scree is a morass of mud and wet earth, while at the top is a flat rock shelf.

KN (nature) or Survival (DC 20):
You can quickly identify
that attempting to climb the scree would likely trigger a rockslide.

Soon the signifier shouts over the wind. "We will make camp for the night. There are no defensible sites here. The flat top will be easier to defend." The hellknights are glad to soon be out of the storm and hoist their packs for the next stage of the march.

Core Helms ! Wizards Wanted Gameday X

Karva listens to the paladin deciding she too can trust the Pathdinders, at least trust them to make a landslide or prove it is safe to climb if they can't collapse it.

She orders the Hellknights to set up a perimeter while letting the dwarf attempt his plan. The rain is falling hard, and it is near dark even this early in the afternoon. Suddenly a bright flash of lightning illuminates the area.

“Hellknights! Form ranks!” Karva calls through the storm. “Pathfinders, stay behind the line and reinforce us. I’m counting on you to deal with anything that breaks through the front line!” Another flash of light reveals hideous animals twisted with fungal growths, extra appendages, and strange mutations skittering forward through the thunderous rainstorm. A menagerie of mountain beasts gathers round—goats, hawks, mountain lions, and giant rats, each covered with a sickly infestation. Crashes of lightning reveal that behind these smaller beasts, larger horrors approach through the rainy haze.

The Hellknights battle with creatures as the hoard smashes into their ranks. The begin hacking and slashing, but the sheer numbers make it hard to see any gains they make against the fungoid creatures. Arcane energy flashes from one infested hawk, and then another from three-legged goat. The ground around the creatures softens and water gushes out. The hellknights and pathfinders find themselves sinking in knee-deep mud.

Realizing the hoard is near the slumping hellside, the dwarf runs to a large boulder and begins prying at it with a large tree branch. He is halfway up the hill when another bright flash reveals the head of a dragon circling at the top of the hill. Fungus sprouts from its horns and a second set of eyes reflect the lightning. A lion's massive body moves with it.

Warpac shouts a warning to the Hellknights and looses the boulder. It slides down the hill, pulling mud with it which grabs more mud and stones.

"Fallback!" the signifier shouts. Without question the Hellknights stop cutting at the creatures and move in a precise wedge. A few find their footing sliding from under them but they manage to avoid the landslide even as it buries most of the smaller animals. They quickly divide forces with some knights remaining to dispatch the larger ones.

Even the giant infected chimera falls quickly to the Pathfinders once the remaining Hellknights join them.

Warpac is the only one adversely bothered by the landslide, his position in starting the movement making his escape nearly impossible. His sacrificing predicament does not go unnoticed and he is dug from under the mud and rocks before he finishes chanting a prayer to Desna.

Even the most serious of his injuries are within the Hellknights magical capabilities, which they grant him with utmost respect.

"Well called. And well placed, Pathfinder," Signifier Karva sincerely says. "Thank you all."

Creative Solutions:
As written the Hellknights deal with the small hoard of infected creatures leaving the Pathfinders to deal with the chimera. Since you have come up with a creative solution I am ruling the 'environment' takes care of the hoard and the large beast is well below CR of the Party and the Hellknights. Even if the Warpac failed his saves (Reflex then several Fortitudes) he would have plenty of time to be rescued before suffering anything serious. Please feel free to add some of your own heroics to the encounter. I hope my narrative doesn't ruin anyone's fun, so if anyone would rather fight the battle as intended, please say so, we will go back and roll initiative. :)

Sounds good to me. Silas would've helped with the battle, though-- cutting down demons (or what he assumes are demons) is his calling.

The dark sky provides enough light for Silas to see around him, but as lightning flashes across the sky, shapes are illuminated through the gloom. Another flash and his fears had come true: hellish creatures coming to send the group to the Abyss.

Silas unsheaths his sword. The mithral hilt stretches into a mithral blade, a meter or more of shining silver. Marring its surface is a crack running down the center of the blade, imperfectly mended by molten iron. The blade itself is encased in flames, the light from which dances across Silas's armor and that of the others around him. Curiously, the flames give off no heat and seem not to notice the pouring rain.

Dutifully, he stays behind the Hellknights' line as the creatures close, but while his allies spend their time triggering the landslide Silas's attention is solely on the creatures in front of him. He is easily spotted in the din of battle, through the darkness and pouring rain-- his flaming sword whirling and striking.

A kind Pathfinder in my last mission cast heightened continual flame on my sword. Spell level 4, caster level 8-- high enough to cut through deeper darkness.

With the infected hoard out of the way, and the mountainside likewise removed, the party is able to climb to the the top of the now-flat peak. As expected it makes a very fortifiable camp.

A small shrine to Gozreh rests at the top of the slope here. The eruption of cythnigots from the mountainside disturbed the unstable ground, revealing a hidden cache beneath the shrine. The cache contains a collection of ancient jugs filled with 25 pale moonstones
worth 100 gp each. One additional gem is not a moonstone, but instead a diamond.

The attack deeply troubles Signifer Karva, "The presence of so many qlippoths is a sign that the corruption of this region runs deep. Make camp and rest so we may prepare for the battles ahead.

Kn (planar) DC 28:
the fungal infection marks these creatures as cythnigot qlippoth. The cythnigot is a foul fungal parasite that grows and thrives within the corpses of small animals. The fungus transforms the host corpse in hideous ways, adding legs or rearranging features—a rat might gain an extra pair of legs and an insectoid visage, while a cat could lose all its legs and fur and gain a snake-like body. The only thing that all cythnigots have in common is a long stalk of fungal material that extends up from the creature's body, ending in a surprisingly strong set of fanged jaws. A cythnigot without a host body appears as little more than a foul-smelling puffball the size of a human's fist. Each of these has a stalk with a fly-trap shaped 'flower'.

The following morning, the march resumes with even greater urgency. The party is now entering Severed Hand territory, so Signifer Karva orders the Hellknights to be especially vigilant. The smell of rotting flesh is thick in the air and roughly a dozen corpses litter the area. In the center of the plateau, a circle of runes is scratched into the earth, and staked to the ground nearby are the corpses of two humanoid creatures with great black wings. Patches of wriggling worms and centipedes
swarm over the rocky ground.

Signifer Karva pauses the expedition and orders her Hellknights, "Begin investigating. Pathfinders I strongly suggest you assist as well."

If there is a particular area you would like to investigate please do so. Add an appropriate skill check for what you are trying to do (you can't be wrong inm choosing a skill, but I might make some adjustments if a specific skill is called out in the scenario.)

Core Helms ! Wizards Wanted Gameday X

It looks like a battle between these orcs and the others.,"the Hellknight Pavrodus says shortly after arriving. "A week ago and probably longer." Bom agrees and adds that roughly 30 humanoids fought here. Several huge beasts with three-toed footprints accompanied them. (KN (nature)?

Warpac, Silas and Boudra look at the winged humanoids. These are known as strix and are local to this part of Cheliax. Their bodies are covered with religious runes and it is clear they were ritualistically sacrificed. Probably after the battle, as they were not dead before the ritual began.

Rowanna examines the runes but doesn't know what spell they might have been used to cast. She can tell however they are related to the deepest layers of the Abyss—where qlippoths reside.

leaving orc bodies, an orc with a mask & worms if anyone wants to also check them out.

Survival (DC 24):
There are also some strange serpentine tracks belong to a giant snake or beast with tentacles.

Zhen you have a decent perception check, but I see no other skills in your profile. Try at least that. Or as Warpac suggested an untrained Survival is an option if you want. Please update your profile to a character sheet (some hints in my profile if you want them :)

Rowanna is too busy to help Borm follow any tracks but she does recognize the three-toed tracks are from mountain gortheks, wooly bison like creatures that orcs train. She also notes the worms in this area bear signs of minor mutation. Most are covered with small stingers, grasping claws, or terrible pincers. Though her knowledge of animals isn't as helpful as her knowledge of the outer realms allow the witch to notes that mutations like these sometimes appear as the result of the taint of powerful evil outsiders summoned into the world.

Perception, please.

This corpse is horribly scarred with runes in Orc and Abyssal carve into its flesh. These words tell sinful stories, chronicling each orc’s entire life of evil deeds. This orc's deeds include nailing a villager to his hut before burning both down and the assassination of the former warlord, to take his place. He lies slain near the center of the field of battle, wearing a strange mask. The orc was injured during the fight and gradually bled to death while his comrades looted the fallen. also a heal check.
