Grelthe |
"My song will help you both, listen!" Grelthe starts singing her inspiring rage-filled song of battle, then musters her strength and tries pulling again... Where is Melkar when you need him? lol
STR check w/ raging song: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 2 = 15
Zadira |
Zadira tries climbing again, even though she knows it will use up some of her air.
Climb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Grelthe |
Grelthe tries pulling again...
STR check + raging song: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11
Grelthe |
Grelthe looks over at Catarya and nods toward the rope,
as if to say "get some help, here?"
STR + raging song: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 2 = 13
Catarya Utanbe |
"Is tat te rope-pulling song?" Catarya asks.
Raging song gives +2 to Strength & CON, so that's +1 to STR checks, right?
STR Aid another: 1d20 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 + 1 = 12
Kayla - Black scorpion |
come on guys pull harder!
she tries to find a spot on the rope and yanks as hard as she can
str check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17 that's another +1 with raging song
Zadira |
Zadira lands on the ground out of the pit with a thump and starts breathing again.
Well, our adventure is all back to normal now, eh?
She gets up, brushes herself off, thanks her friends, and then proceeds up the hallway to cast Open on the next door.
Maybe disabling traps isn't as important as I thought. Maybe I shouldn't care whether the next group falls into them? I don't know...
Hey, where's Melkar?
GM Choon |
Water drips from the ceiling of this room, which is filled with mushrooms and fungi of many kinds and colors. As soon as the door opens an unearthly shriek erupts from the room! The sound immediately drowns out all other sound and seems to reverberate off the walls! You can practically feel the waves!
1d3 + 1d2 + 1d5 + 1d4 ⇒ (2) + (1) + (5) + (2) = 10
Zadira |
Wow. Zadira says, That's loud.
Probably every wandering monster in the whole dungeon is going to come attack us now. Awesome.
... Of course, you can't really hear her because of the unearthly shriek.
She figures she can't yell out and ask if there is a person making that noise, so she just looks from the doorway (not going in).
Perception to discern where the shriek is coming from: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 <--counting it as environmental hazard or dangerous flora, but if it is actually a person, then my roll is 2 lower.
Kayla - Black scorpion |
Making sure Zadira is not in the room, Kayla tries to shut the door, enough of that. lets go somewhere else.
Zadira |
Zadira maps the room from outside the doorway.
When Kayla shuts the door (if they can hear again), she says:
What, Kayla? You don't want to kill the evil mushrooms?
Okay, fine, but if our map shows that there might be some secret door in there, we might have to come back and find it.
Pausing here to let anyone object if they want to clear the room before we move on.
GM Choon |
Just then four giant ants round the corner to the north and advance on the party!
init snake: 1d20 ⇒ 10
init Grelthe: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
init Zadira: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
init Catarya: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
init Kayla: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Zadira and Catarya up, then the bugs!
Map Updated

when Zadira turns to face the ants, Kayla sticks her tongue out at her then mocks her lecture.
Zadira |
When Zadira sees the ants she says Err, what I meant was Good idea Kayla, because surely some other monster is about to turn the corner and devour us.
She moves up and shoots at the ant outlined in green.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Grelthe |
"I wonder what else heard that shrieking"
Zadira |
Probably everything in the whole dungeon, so let's kill these ones so we don't get trapped between other ones that come the opposite way.
Catarya Utanbe |

"Mebbe we can clean out te whole dungeon by chust getting tese tings to scream and bring all te bad guys to us!"
Catarya darts forward while pulling out one of her non-magical daggers, holding the ones she normally has out in her left hand. She flings it at the nearest ant.
dagger Fighting Defensively: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 11 - 2 = 17
dagger damage (+1d8 sneak): 1d6 + 1d8 ⇒ (1) + (1) = 2
30' move and then standard action to throw. They are still flat-footed, so sneak damage applies. My AC is now 25.
GM Choon |
Both attacks fly true, but they fail to do much more than make the ants chitter. Then two of the ants charge! The other two rush Catarya at a rate more akin to a sprinting wolf than anything you've seen an insect do before. Then again these ants are the size of ponies...
Three swarm Catarya, trapping her against the wall! She dodges two of them, including the charging one, but the third flanks her and she can't dance away in time! The jaws close around her leg with crushing force and try to hold, but she slips out before they can find purchase!
Zadira isn't so lucky. She gets charged by a lone ant who moves at terrifying speed down the hall! It grabs her and holds tight!
Blue and Purple provoke AoO from Catarya
blue vs catarya: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
purple vs catarya: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Grab!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
green vs Catarya: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 2 = 21
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Grab!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Catarya takes 7 damage, Zadira takes 6 and is grappled.
Catarya Utanbe |
"Dam bugs!" Cartarya curses as the ant bites her leg.
She swings her magic dagger as the ants rush past.
I would take my AoO against the first one to go past me, which is probably purple?
+1 Dagger AoO: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
+1 Dagger Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Zadira |
I just looked up the grappled condition, and I see that I can't cast any spells (none of mine are verbal component only), can't use anything 2-handed (which is the only thing I am holding), and can't move (so can't draw another weapon). It doesn't say what you have to roll to escape a grapple though. I am going to roll escape artist because that seems most likely to me--? But please correct me if I am wrong. Sorry for the ignorance. I know I have been grappled before, but it was likely when I was playing in person and someone just told me what to roll, so I didn't retain it.
Escape Artist: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
That's almost guaranteed to be a fail no matter what the real type of roll is, so bring on the ant trying to bite my head off. :)
If I die, can I come back as Melkar? ;)
Kayla - Black scorpion |
Kayla flips around the ant grabbing Z as she draws her blades.
flip and tumble: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
as she lands she thrusts one of her blades into the ant grabbing her (green)
attack with flank: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 10 + 2 = 25
damage: 1d4 + 4 + 3d6 ⇒ (4) + 4 + (1, 6, 4) = 19
Grelthe |
Grelthe bellows as she charges the pink one with her flail.
charge attack flanking: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 10 + 2 + 2 = 17
damage 1-h: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Temporary -2 to AC for a round
Zadira |
Okay, I am crappy with the sword, but maybe I'll get a lucky shot.
Zadira (retroactively) drops her bow and draws her sword as a move action.
GM Choon |
Kayla, in a graceful display of her long trained skills, flips around the ant holding Zadira and puts it down with a single stroke. The other ants weather their wounds well and continue to bite at Catarya!
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Grab!: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
purple: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 = 24
blue: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
red confirm: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 3 + 2 = 23
The north ant snaps at Catarya and nearly gets her neck! She avoids the deadly pincers by only the slightest of margins, literally a hair's breadth, and only takes a minor scrape to show for it. The other ants almost get in their licks as well, but Catarya slides out of their way with almost prescient grace.
Catarya takes 6. Party up
Zadira |
Thank you, Kayla, for saving me yet again. I owe you.
Zadira casts Magic Missile at the red-outlined ant.
MM Damage: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 4, 4) + 3 = 13
Catarya Utanbe |
"Ah, tanks," Catarya says. She turns and focuses her attention on the other ants, while trying to stay out of the reach of those mandibles.
continuing fighting defensively... in fact, now that I have Crane Style I'll pretty much always do that.
+1 dagger TWF vs. Pink +2 flank -2 fighting defensively: 1d20 + 10 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 10 + 2 - 2 = 23
+1 dagger damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1d8 ⇒ (7) + 1 + (3) = 11
Mwk dagger TWF vs. Pink +2 flank -2 fighting defensively: 1d20 + 10 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 10 + 2 - 2 = 25
+1 dagger damage: 1d8 + 1d8 ⇒ (2) + (5) = 7
If pink goes down then I will 5' step behind blue. If I still have another attack and it is allowed I will delay that attack until I have a flank; otherwise it is -2 to hit and only 2 damage for the second attack.
Catarya then touches her wound with her hand and tries to stanch the bleeding.
Fervor as lay on hands: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12
I've taken 13 damage so far and that heals 12 so I am down 1. Nice.
Grelthe |
Grelthe drops her shield, takes a 5 foot step up to the last ant and swings with both hands...
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
damage 2h: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 = 9
Grelthe |
Grelthe picks up her shield and listens intently to see if she can hear any other enemies approaching.
perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Zadira |
Zadira looks at the dead ants and then at her companions. It isn't bone, or slime, but still...
Anyone collect ant parts?
Which reminds me... did you ever turn in that scalp for a bounty, Grelthe, or is it still in your pack? :)
Grelthe |
I totally forgot about that! The back tattoo is still in my pack. I was going to take care of it when we were in town, but then got sidetracked with Gelver. Oops
Grelthe |
Okay thanks, let's not divide that up till we know if Melkar is coming back or not.
Grelthe nudges the diminutive gnome, asking Kayla "Do you want to scout around the corner, or shall I? I think you have the keener senses, plus I'm not that quiet". She gestures at her armor.
Kayla - Black scorpion |
Kayla jumps a little bit at Grelthe's request, what? sorry I didn't hear you approaching. she says with a smile.
ok I'm on it. she adds and stealthily moves ahead to scout. peering around the corner.
stealthy: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (18) + 19 = 37
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Zadira |
Zadira waits for Kayla to signal them, and then moves with the party, looking for the next door.
Grelthe |
Well it's good to know we won't be ambushed from that direction at least. Might as well check inside this door before we move on around the corner?
if this room is empty, I assume we move along to the door Kayla spied?
Zadira |
Zadira (trusting as ever to her automatic trap-sense even though it has failed her multiple times in the past and she should probably have adjusted her level of overconfidence down several notches by now) walks into the room and up to the pillar with a face.
She avoids touching it (thinking that this alone is proof that she has become more cautious), but examines it closely, and says (perhaps unwisely) to the face on the pillar, Can you talk?, wondering whether it is a magical construction or just vandalism.
Having let her detect magic lapse, she recasts it quickly, realizing that her spell could probably have told her what she wanted to know without the embarrassment of talking to a pillar.
GM Choon |
Number string of DOOM: 3d20 + 3d4 + 1d6 + 3d6 + 3d6 ⇒ (18, 20, 1) + (4, 1, 1) + (1) + (6, 4, 5) + (4, 4, 6) = 75
Zadira casts detect magic and a blatantly magical jet of steam envelops her! The steam clears quickly and reveals Zadira twitching on the floor.
The next person who enter the room also gets hit by a jet of steam and shrinks to 1 foot in height for a minute and a half (15 rds). The third person to enter successfully dodges the steam. There is no more steam after that.
It only lasts for a few seconds, but it's a crazy few seconds.
As suddenly as it comes... it's over and you're lying on the cold floor of the Demon's Gullet.
Zadira |
No damage? Those number of doom are worrying. :)
Zadira looks around frantically, reaching out... and then realizing that she's back in the dungeon, which just a few moments ago she was happy about, but now... seems so much less than it could be. She sits up, looking lost, and famished. Kayla, do you have any chocolate? I really need something sweet.
