We used a 20 point buy I think.

Darvan's comments are good.

Have some fun with it. We will make any sort of party work (or we won't!)

With the increase in the powers of guns, the party will pick up some strike abilities with multiple pistols and such.

I think we can move the storyline along while Dewyn creates his character. We will figure out a way to link him up to the group (I already have a plan in this regard).

Oh yeah, one other thing to remember is that we're pirates ... not a charitable institution.

If you build a paladin we'll just have to tie an anchor to your ankles and drop you over the side.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

Why is it I can only hit a monster if I roll for someone else?

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

Hah! So if everyone swaps their characters, this won't be a TPK?

I will have limited access to internet 08/01 - 08/09, playing Disney Dad in FL with my son. Totally stoked.

If I'm playing in your game, please bot me.
If I'm DM'ing your game, please be patient.

Thank you

Hurry back, Atri will alternately squawk like a parrot and kaw like a crow until you do ....

And have a good trip!

Male Elf Wizard | lvl 5 | HP 24/24 | AC 13/13/10 | F+1/R+4/W+4

Have a good time Atri!

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

We'll just have to continue exploring and use the Grindylow as a Polish Mine Detector.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

Two things:

(1) for GM: is a grindylow humanoid enough for a hold person to work on it?

(2) for other players: stand back, blast them, and make the grindylows come to us?

Male Elf Wizard | lvl 5 | HP 24/24 | AC 13/13/10 | F+1/R+4/W+4

That may be the best bet/our only bet Darvan lol. Sounds like we're between a big mouth and a few pointy spears behind us.

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

The large grindylow is definitely not a "hold person" sort of target.

The small grindylows for sure.

I am tied up a bit with real life stuff but should surface tomorrow.

I am on vacation until 8/18, but am going to be around until I leave for GenCon next Wed.

Back...kinda.

1) Headed to Gen Con Thursday.
2) Took a new job which demands much more than the existing. Posting will be less than previous efforts, last week excluded.

Huzzah on the new job!

Huzzah on GenCon (see you there!)

Thank you sir.

Last posting day before GenCon break.

If I don't make a post before today ends, see you Monday night!

I'm sorry! I got so caught up on vacation I totally forgot to post on here to let you know it'd be a few for me to check what's going on. Sorry again :(

Woot! Back from GenCon. Awesome trip. Atri knows how to party! It would have probably killed me to try to keep up. Especially since I was running an 8 am game the next day (and they got in at 3:45a!).

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

And, alas, I must confess I never played a Pathfinder game there. Too much other stuff to try.

Really enjoyed running Numenera and The Strange.

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

It looks like we are struggling with 2 of our 4 players.

Not a good thing. Yet, this his how most forum games seem to end up.

Male Elf Wizard | lvl 5 | HP 24/24 | AC 13/13/10 | F+1/R+4/W+4

How was Numenera? I've heard a lot of mixed views on it.

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

I like Numenera a lot. I am willing to run a game on the forum here.

I also like The Strange quite a bit - it has the same Cypher system of rules, but a very different setting. In some ways it is better, in others it is not.

The characters in Numenera are simpler. You are described by a sentence.

For example, you may be a graceful Glaive who fuses flesh and steel. The stat block for a character is just a few numbers (maybe a total of 10?).

The setting is on Earth, a billion years in the future. You are in the Ninth World, or the ninth time a major civilization has risen on the earth. Evidence of high science is all around you, although human understanding of the science is not very high, and many consider it magic.

The game is about exploration and discovery. No experience for killing things - only for finding things out. There is also a method called "GM intrusion" where the GM hands out experience as a way to introduce a change to the storyline, such as "you prepare to examine the weird looking pedestal with the glowing lights when the floor below you gives out, and you fall into darkness", or similar sort of things.

Lets move treasure division discussions here instead of having a trail of ooc talk on the Gameplay. (I know, I started all of that)

Wilma's loot sheet is brilliant. Just the thing we need to keep us straight.

Keith, can we get a link to that under the campaign info tab?

It has been decided that Atri and Variel managed to lose the gear that was allocated to them since they never recorded it. (I deleted them off the loot sheet). Lesson learned ... track your loot.

I don't know if we want to track them on the sheet, but in potions we've found:

4 cure moderate wounds, 1 Invisibility

Atri also has a nifty pistol, Darvan has a Mwk Dagger and Dewyn has a Mwk Dagger (I added those to the spreadsheet)

Just scanning the loot to see who can use what it looks like (correct me if I'm wrong):

Tricorn : Given to Wilma
Crossbow / Bolts : everyone
Whale Skull : Dewyn
Bracers of Archery: Atri / Thelma are the only people proficient, doesn't Wilma already have a bow
Wand : looks like only Thelma has a Use Magic Device skill rank?
Ring of Swimming : everyone
Pistol : Atri invested in the feat
Mwk Daggers : everyone

I tend to think of Wilma and Dewyn as our ranged combatants and Atri and Darvan as the front line fighters.

My first take on a division would be:

Atri: Pistol, Mwk Dagger
Wilma: Bracers, Wand, Tricorn Hat
Dewyn: Skull, Crossbow, Bolts
Darvan: Ring of Swimming, Mwk Dagger

Everyone speak up and tell me what you think

Sovereign Court

The division makes sense to me (I've got a regular bow, so having Dewyn wield the crossbow suits me just fine. The bracers are sweet...). I've filled it out in the spreadsheet, and It's pretty clear that I (mostly) and Dewyn owe Darvan and Atri. Guess we'll make up for that later.

I don't think we should put pure consumables (potions) on the list. For wands it makes a bit more sense.

Male Elf Wizard | lvl 5 | HP 24/24 | AC 13/13/10 | F+1/R+4/W+4

Agreed on the brilliant work sheet, awesome job Wilma!

As for the loot division, it all looks solid to me, staying in the back and maintaining ranged damage would be the way to go for me. I have a better bonus in Dex. Loot is loot to me :) or I guess in this case booty is booty.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

I hereby decree that each character is carrying a potion of cure moderate wounds (easy since we have 4) and Atri is carrying a potion of Invisibility.

I'm thinking that the bird has the best combination of stealth and climb and should use the potion for sneaking up to the deck of the Promise, dropping a rope for the rest of us, and sneak attacking whoever is on watch.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

I just noticed yesterday that Wilma gets a familiar because she's a Sea Singer.

My vote is that when she gets around to acquiring one, she gets a monkey with a tambourine (with the familiar Valet Archetype so it has Perform as a class skill).

Sovereign Court

HP 33/33 | AC 14, T 12, FF 12, CMD 15 (17 vs Grap, Trip, Overrun) | Fort: +2, Ref: +6, Will: +4 | Init. +2 Perc +6 Human Bard (Sea Singer) 5

Yeah, seriously. I keep forgetting that I have that familiar (I get it at second level). I called him 'crew' (for purposes of delusions of grandeur: Fire Marshal Wima and her Crew)

But monkey with tambourine it is! (I didn't know familiars had archetypes, so thanks for pointing that out).

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

The monkey would have your ranks in Perform(tambourine) and it would be a class skill for him. His CHA is only a 5, so that -3 penalty would cancel out the class skill bonus.

I say you dump one skill point into Perform(tambourine) and then I'd say the Monkey can make "Aid Another" checks to help your performances.

Male Elf Wizard | lvl 5 | HP 24/24 | AC 13/13/10 | F+1/R+4/W+4

The possibilities of a monkey wielding a tambourine are endless!

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

And I can turn it into an undead monkey like in Pirates of the Caribean.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

I updated Darvan's backstory in his character tab.

It still needs some work, but at least we now know where he is from.

@Darvan - If we do need a new player, do you think Tony S would be interested??

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

Maybe Tony, maybe Mason

I'll ask at Madness (our FLGS) today.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

Here are my thoughts on dividing party treasure:

3 Screaming Bolts - Dewyn because he has a crossbow
+1 Tidewater Cutlass - Atri because he's the only party member proficient with it
Bracers of Armor - Dewyn because the rest of us can get that armor bonus with mundane gear
Amulet of Natural Armor - Darvan because he's the official party punching bag (I really need to find someplace he can buy better mundane armor)
Masterwork Handaxe - Atri because he's the only party member proficient with it
Potion of Cure Light - Atri because he used his cure potion in the fight
Shackles of Compliance - leave it in party treasure until we need it
2 Doses Dark Reaver Poison - leave it in party treasure
1 Dose Black Adder Venom - leave it in party treasure

Didn't realize until today that a handaxe is a martial weapon ...

Also, recruitment for a replacement player is underway.

I think I hand him with "The bard's getting a monkey with a tambourine ..."

Sovereign Court

Since we're not sure if Atri will continue to be in the party, shouldn't keep his share on the party treasure?

@Keith: is it workable at all if we continue with the three of us? We've been having plenty of trouble with the encounters when we were four :)

--Edit--
Updated to level 4:
Craft (Ship): +5
K(Local) +6
Perform(Percussion Instruments) +8 :-)
An alter self to get rid of that inability to swim...

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

My personal thoughts are that we allocate Atri's share to his character out of fairness and let him fade into the background as a noncom on the ship.

I think I have an interested 4th player.

He's checking out the forum tonight and going to let me know what he thinks.

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

You can survive and play with only 3 of you. I would adjust the encounters to suit.

I think it will be better with 4. That is how most pathfinder modules are built. Of course, we could fit in appropriate crew members as a 4th in the group.

In general, my pathfinder philosophy is that you can build some powerful min/maxed characters with the rules. Modules are built for higher end characters (more power). It is up to the GM (me) to adjust the encounters for the powerlevel of the players.

I personally find fun and "in character" players are a more enjoyable group. So go ahead and take that odd feat that won't by hyper useful - if it fits what you have in mind for a character, go right ahead!

Or play power hungry...we can make that work too.

No worries. We are here to have fun.

Male Elf Wizard | lvl 5 | HP 24/24 | AC 13/13/10 | F+1/R+4/W+4

Thanks for the bracers Darvan :) I tend to get a wee bit nervous when CC gets to close. I'll try and be more conscious of casting Mage Armor on you as well.

I agree on that note Keith, I tend to enjoy a fluffy character over the min/max role. I'm sure one of us could roll a second character if we really had to, I've always wanted to try the Monk ;)

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

Mage Armor provides a +4 armor bonus. That won't stack with any other armor bonus (like the +3 I get from the studded leather I'm wearing) or the +1 armor bonus you'll get from the Bracers of Armor.

For the most part (excepting Dodge bonuses I think), bonuses of the same type don't stack.

If you cast mage armor on Darvan right now, he gets the better of the +3 bonus from studded leather or the +4 from mage armor, but not both.

That's why the amulet of natural armor is more valuable than the bracers. The natural armor bonus stacks with a regular armor bonus while the bracer's bonus wouldn't.

Darvan just needs to get to civilization and buy a breastplate for 200gp to get a +6 armor bonus.

I also screwed up in character creation and didn't realize that I couldn't cast spells with a weapon and heavy shield. I think I can with a light shield or buckler (passing the weapon to the off hand with the shield as a free action, holding the weapon in that hand while casting, and then passing back).

So he dropped the shield at some point and just rolled with the +3 armor from studded leather and nothing else. He'll be a lot better when he can buy a breastplate and buckler and combine it with the amulet for a total ac of 17 or 18.

Darvan's character is updated.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

It seems like the available siege engines don't hit very hard when you compare them with the ship's hit points.

That's probably "historically" accurate given that you didn't often sink a wooden ship with gunfire, but it doesn't seem very satisfying.

I imagine that fire and burning is the biggest thing to fear.

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

See the special ammunition table on page 21 of the Skull and Shackles Player's guide.

Also consider that there are primitive firearms about. You only need to find a crazed goblin inventor who has cast cannon or similar.

But you are not all wrong about the damage.

Consider a broadside of light ballistae, each doing 3d8 damage.

If 5 hit, it is 15d8 damage, which is an average of 67.5 points of damage to the target. As your ship has 1620 hp, she can take 24 broadsides before she is sinking.

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

I think that the smart thing for a crew to do is have a wizard or druid on tap who can summon water elementals to put out fires.

A summon monster III would call up a little swarm of small water elementals that could all use their quench power to put out fires.

Male Elf Wizard | lvl 5 | HP 24/24 | AC 13/13/10 | F+1/R+4/W+4

I'll be sure to keep a Summon Monster on hand at most/all times. It can be a pretty spiffy spell for sure. Good thinking Darvan!

Human Druid-Student of War | lvl 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15/12/13 | +3/+3/+6 | Init +2 | Per +8

Polling for ship names for what is to be the flagship of our pirate armada.

Hopefully them GM, through the personage of Fishguts, will tell us if we pick a name already taken by some dread pirate lord or another.

I don't want us to start a vendetta with somebody because they think we stole their name.

My suggestions: The Dreadful Bride, The Tempest, or The Sea Hag

Turning over the details of the repair to someone whose character shows more interest/aptitude in shipbuilding.

Darvan swims, drives boats, and talks to fish...

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

Let us talk about cash.

Each point of plunder is worth a nominal 1,000 gold.

However, the size of the port matters when selling the loot.

In a village, for example (which is what Ricketty Squibbs is), it sells for 30% of its value normally, and with a DC15 skill check, it can be pushed as high as 40%. The applicable skills are bluff, diplomacy, intimidate, or a craft or profession (of an appropriate kind).

So your 5 points of plunder will be worth at max 2,000 gold. Maybe as low as 1,500 gold.

And, when it comes time to hitting the bar in Squibbs, you get to roll a check to increase your infamy. Spending a point of plunder there can raise you odds of gaining infamy.

Tell me how you want to go about it.
