Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

"Your work is done here, Abel," says Keildrithe, echoing Nicolai and Alton. "Bernardino has confessed, and he will pay for his crimes in shame, and in whatever way Arton deems appropriate. Now let go of your hate. There is no need to take any more lives. Deliver the message Arton wanted you to deliver, and then be free... we beg you... it is time for you to rest in peace. "

Readies an action to attack, should Abel attack anyone else. Diplomacy: 11 + 12 = 23.

Round 4:
Laithe: 20 +
Monks: 20 –
Keildrithe: 16
Brother Abel: 15
Kajetan: 14
Brother Bernadino: 11
Nicolai: 9
Brother Anselm: 6
Alton: 5

Abel does not appear to acknowledge Keildrithe’s words, but continues to stare dully at Nicolai, his decaying lips quivering wordlessly.

Kajetan.

Kajetan hesitates, not sure if the diplomacy will work, he suddenly becomes aware that he has wet the front of his robes and shifts uneasy as he waits for the dead lock to be broken. The floating ghostly hand quivers besides him as he concentrates on Brother Able, waiting for the once living thing to make a move.

I will ready a touch attack with the spectral hand if Brother Able turns hostile again.

What is it about Nicolai that has Abel so mesmerized? Does Nicolai have the variant holy symbol of Arton in hand? Does Abel have some kind of connection with Padre Stefan... or perhaps he senses that Nicolai is closest in philosophy/faith to the messages that Arton has granted him???

Nicolai previously stated that he was prominantly wearing the holy symbol found in Abel's room ...

“Abel, I am sorry, I believed you, I never meant …” Bernadino grovels at his former brother’s frost bitten, unshod feet.

Upon the older monk’s words, the spell that has held Abel in place appears to break. The dead man’s eye’s widen and his mouth snaps shut. He looks down at Bernadino, then across again at Nicolai.

Nicolai.

Wow. It's time for the old saying, 'Go big or go home!' :)

Nicholai's jaw clenches as the deadlock is broken, and Abel looks to Bernadino, then back to Nicholai. It is Nicholai who breaks eye contact first, dipping his head and hands with a soft sigh. His lips move softly, and Nicholai slowly raises his head once more.

But this is no longer the Nicholai who pleads, or asks. THIS Nicholai commands, and expects to be obeyed. The aura of confidence, of authority rolls off of the dandy and hits everyone in the church like a blinding light in dark room. Even his companions are not unaffected, seeing him as a legitimate figure of authority.

Nicholai stands tall, his plain, borrowed monks robes looking regal on him as he faces Abel calmly.

"Brother. Let go of your hate. Tell me your visions. And rest. I swear that I shall see you buried in holy ground, as you deserve. Let Arton himself judge you, for I shall not. Only trust in me to see justice done here, and move on to your reward."

Nicholai slowly raises his hand once more. His arm points straight at Abel without wavering.

"There is only one other choice Abel. I beg of you not to make me do it. Your killer is revealed. Your work here is done. Rest. In holy ground. Sleep Abel,..."

Diplomacy +Spell bonus: 1d20 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 5 = 30

Nicholai uses his Sudden Still Feat to cast Raiment of Command (About time I used that feat, AND that spell!) :)

Bluff: (IF necessary, trying hide the Verbal component from Abel): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29

Spell description:

Spoiler:

CASTING

Components V, S
EFFECT

Duration 1 hour/level
Saving Throw Will (See below); Spell Resistance no

DESCRIPTION

You are cloaked in an illusion of authority. others perceive you to be a legitimate figure of authority—a higher-ranking official, a religious figure, a more powerful warrior. This illusion grants you a +5 bonus on all Diplomacy and Intimidate checks. If you attempt to disguise yourself as a specific authority figure, you gain a +10 competence bonus on the Disguise check and any Bluff check related to impersonating that authority figure.

In addition, others are uncomfortable acting against you. creatures with an intelligence of 4 or more must make a Will save or take a –2 penalty on all opposed checks against you.

Abel is an intelligent undead, so it should work on him. The target is ME, so the will save is only for those who attack me (save or take a penalty to oppose me) If i'm reading it right. :)

Great spell and feat combo (and I think you’re reading the spell right) and good time for a good roll ...

The problem of course with Diplomacy is that it takes ‘1 minute of continuous interaction’ to influence someone’s attitude ... there was a rule in 3.5 that you could ‘rush’ a Diplomacy check as one full round action, but took a -10 penalty to the roll. In any event, a Diplomacy check may not have the desired effect unless you can find some other way of stopping him from attacking for at least another few rounds. The other effect of the spell will of course still be valid.

Brother Anselm wisely remains silent, deferring to Nicolai ... Alton's turn.

Male Halfling Rouge 4

Alton continues to hold his breath, weapon ready but unmoving. He gapes at Nicholai's speech and sudden transformation from flippant friend to confident leader.
Still not sure if his friends words have had an effect, but hoping they have, he holds his position, ready to strike if needed.
'Maybe we should get the target out of here' he murmurs quietly to Laithe and Keildrithe who stand nearby.

holding attack for Abel to make a hostile move

Laithe in round 5.

Male Human - Karandic Druid/4

Laithe nod's silently at Alton, agreeing with the wisdom of the swashbucklers suggestion. He carefully steps back from Abel, then circles around to flank the cowering Bernadino.

Moth, can Laithe 5 ft step back and then circle around to stand next Bernadino to offer some cover for Alton and Keildrithe to usher him out of the church?

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

It's risky... but Keildrithe crouches down and tries to drag Brother Bernardino away from Brother Abel, praying that Alton and Laithe have him adequately covered. "Don't ask me why I'd try to save your miserable life," grumbles the Karand to the older monk as he grabs him by the arm.

Keildrithe will pull him through the back door of the church, if that's feasible. Do I need to make a check? According to the rules, he should be able to drag 500 lbs. without needing to make a check???

Kajetan continues to concentrate on the Undead Monk, waiting for a development. His brow twitches as he stares ready to unleash his spell at the slightest hostile action.

You can’t take a 5 foot step AND make a normal move in the same turn, but you can make a ‘withdraw’ action to achieve the same thing.

Laithe steps carefully away from the undead monk and circles around to stand near Bernadino.

Keildrithe, for his part, begins dragging Bernadino away into the antechamber.

Abel suddenly bursts into movement, his target not the elderly Bernadino, instead, he launches himself with a surprising lurching speed at Nicolai!

I believe Alton gets an attack of opportunity (are you using the Longtooth dagger?) and also gets his readied action (so effectively two attacks). Kajetan also gets his readied action at this point. We'll resolve those before I finish Abel's action.

Male Halfling Rouge 4

Alton is taken somewhat off guard as Abel launches into action, at Nicholai rather than at the expected target. Still, he springs into action, stabbing at the creature with his longtooth dagger.

attack 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
attack 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Whoa, crapola

The quick dead easily dodges aside from Alton’s mis-timed strikes.

Kajetan flicks his hand forward and the ghostly hand rushes over and attempts to touch Brother Abel to deliver its spell.

Touch Attack (STR -1, BA +2, Spectral Hand +2) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

That looks poor, what a surprise.

He growls deep in his throat as the attack is errant.

"Whoa! Are ALL dead guys so freakin' fast? Or just the ones we run into?!?" Nicholai blurts in surprise as he steps back, raising his arms to defend himself.

He may be radiating authority, but he's still just the same old smart-aleck we all know and luv! AND he's used up his action for this round, except for maybe running away?!? ;P

Reminder, Abel must make a Will Save DC:15 or take a -2 penalty on any rolls used to oppose Nicholai. (I'm reading that as including attack rolls?)

I think it is just the undead that you guys encounter ...

Abel rushes at Nicolai with a snarl, barging into the mage and knocking him from his feet. Nicolai crashes heavily into the stone floor, the wind knocked from him. The dead man reaches down for Nicolai’s throat with his bone-sharpened fingers ...

Abel makes a trip attack on Nicolai (-2 factored in), knocking him prone. As Nicolai did not have a weapon to hand he gets no AoO.

Kajetan.

I took a readied action, so my initiative is now Abels plus 1.

I know a delayed action changes your init order, I wasn't sure if a readied action did. Either way, don't worry about it, go ahead and take your turn now if you're about.

EDIT: you are quite right about the change in init order though.

Revised init for round 5:
Laithe: 20 +
Keildrithe: 16 +
Alton: 16
Kajetan 16 -
Brother Abel: 15
Kajetan: 14
Brother Bernadino: 11
Nicolai: 9
Brother Anselm: 6

Brother Bernadino struggles feebly and without avail to wriggle free of Keildrithe’s grasp.

Nicolai is up. Remember Rags, Nic is prone and Abel stands over him (so AoO’s may apply depending on your action).

DM Moth:

Spoiler:

Cool. Thanks. Touch (range) attack question. A touch attack (with a spell) is considered making an armed attack as with a weapon, so does NOT draw an AoO. Does that same rule apply to Ranged Touch attack spells/powers? Or would the casting of a spell still draw an AoO but the attack would not? I want to use my (new) 'Heavenly Fire' Bloodline ability (gained when transferred to PF.) It seems a good dramatic moment to use it! :) It is a (Sp) Supernatural ability. Does SP abilities draw AoO's? I hope not! Ah well, either way Here we go! :) Heavenly Fire does 1d4+1/2 levels of dmg to evil creatures. It HEALS the same to good, and has NO effect on neutral. I'm guessing (hoping) that Brother Abel's current form is considered Evil??? ;P

Nicholai Whoofs loudly as he is knocked flat on his back by the charge of the undead Abel. Struggling to catch his breath, he tries to hastily cast a spell, but his hands shake and he only manages to wheeze. Struggling to breathe, he watches as the horrific hands of Abel reach for his throat. Instead of closing his eyes in terror, Nicholai steels his resolve, and he meets the undead Abel's eyes and stares back. In Nicholai's mind, this brief battle of wills, terror vs calm, hatred vs peace, swiftly becomes his entire world. He can feel the pressure building inside of him. He can smell the rotten odor of the former monk leaning over him. There is a pounding in his head,...

Something inside of Nicholai seems to snap and relax, and a warm, pleasant feeling spreads rapidly through him. A shimmer of light gleams momentarily over Nicholai's skin, and his hands burst into flame.

Not the blindingly hot flame of his spells, or the ruddy flame of a smoking torch. These flames are golden, and cast a bright, pleasant glow. Nicholai stares in amazement at his hands, then looks at Abel. His lips tighten into a thin, determined line, and he thrusts his hands up, sending a blast of golden fire towards Abel's face,...

HEavenly Fire (Sp) bloodline ability Dmg 1d4+1/2 levels Ranged touch attack;

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Spell-like abilities (Sp) garner an AoO, supernatural abilities (Su) do not. This is a spell-like ability, so ...

As Nicolai puts his hands up, Abel slashes at them with his sharpened fingers, scoring a series of deep, bloody and very painful parallel lines across Nicolai’s palms, tearing through flesh and tendons to the bone 13 points of damage.

Nicolai, spell like abilities are also subject to spell resistance, so please make a caster level check to see if the fire affects Abel – although it is not subject to energy resistance it will still be subject to spell resistance.

“Abel! No, you cannot do this!” shouts Brother Anselm. Raising the simple Star of Arton that hangs around his neck he calls out. “Father Arton, send this man back to the grave where he belongs!”

A faint radiance seems to creep out in a sphere from where Anselm stands, encompassing those nearby including Abel, who hisses and flinches as the light touches him.

Laithe in round 6.

Wow. That,... hurt. Almost down to half in one hit! :O Current HP= 18

Nicholai screams in agony as the claw-like fingers of Abel slash his arms and hands to the bone.

CL check, gotcha 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Despite the pain, Nicolai’s focus does not waver and he sends a fan of golden fire into Abel’s face. The dead man shrieks as the flames burn away his hair and the dry skin of his face, leaving a skull plastered with charred, blackened flesh with hateful, mad eyes.

Laithe glances backwards for a split second, watching Keildrithe pull brother Bernadino free and then curses as he looks back and finds Abel charging across the room as Nicolai.

Calling on the powers of the wild once more, he transforms into wolf-form and charges after the undead monk. He is too late to prevent Nicolai from the claws of the creature, but he charges at it's back, jaws snapping at it's neck.

To hit (charge): 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 9 + 2 = 13
To dmg: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Keildrithe curses as he watches Abel knock Nicolai to the ground and then rend him viciously. He takes heart when Laithe charges the fiend, and dismisses Brother Bernardino. "Run for your life while you still can, Bernardino. Tell the others what your jealousy and hypocrisy have unleashed on this world, while we try to set things right."

The bard then turns again toward the melee, and begins to recite an ode that resounds powerfully within the vaulted church.

When we meet eye to eye
I will ask how and why
And when guilt has its way
One less reason to stay
And I will watch you cry...

Saw you standing nigh
In the corner
Told me that you had died
Become a ghost in perpetual void
And neglect all reasons why...

The chant is mournful, yet somehow, Keildrithe's companions sense that the words give them some insight into Abel's soul, and some power over him... and that lifts their spirits while they confront the undead horror.

Excerpt from "Famine," by Opeth. Using inspire courage,, as I don't think any of my spells or weapons would be effective against Abel. Everyone gains a +1 morale bonus to on saving throws against fear effects and a +1 bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.

Laithe again leaps at Abel, but the dead man swats him aside, and the wolf’s jaws close on empty air. Keildrithe begins an ode of hope and courage to attempt to bolster his companions’ fighting spirits.

Alton and Kajetan.

Male Halfling Rouge 4

Alton moves into contact with the thing again, determined to cause the creature some pain and give Nicolai a chance to get off the ground. He moves to flank Abel accross from Laithe, and strikes again with the longtooth dagger.
Im assuming there's no sneak attack damage on this dude...
Attack 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 1 + 2 = 16 damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Alton’s dagger skids across Abel’s surprisingly tough skin without causing any apparent damage.

That was a miss, but sneak attack damage will apply if relevant – you can sneak attack most things now in PF, including most undead and constructs.

Kajetan tries to touch the undead monk again.

Touch Attack (STR -1, BA +2, Spectral Hand +2, +1 Inspire Courage) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

That looks borderline, if a 13 touch attack hits, then Abel must make a successful Will saving throw (DC-16) or flee as if panicked for 1d4 rounds + 1 round per caster level (1d4+4).

Kajetan’s spectral hand touches Abel, who you notice seems to be moving somewhat more slowly now for some reason. However, he seems unfazed by the spectral touch.

(Just) hit his touch AC, but he has a good will save ... plus I rolled a natural 20 on the saving throw, unfortunately for you.

Abel turns at slashes at Laithe once again with his sharpened fingers, scoring bloody lines across the wolf’s nose 10 points of damage and trying to swat him aside, before turning and shambling in the direction that Keildrithe dragged Bernadino.

Alton and Laithe get AoOs, I don’t think the spectral hand does, and Nicolai does not from his prone and weaponless position.

Now, I need to know where Keildrithe is standing (either a co-ordinate or a general idea) – importantly is he standing within the church, within the rear antechamber, or blocking the door between both spaces?

Brother Bernadino struggles to his feet and begins hobbling towards the rear door of the church.

Nicolai. You are no longer threatened and can freely climb to your feet (or stay prone as is your choice).

Male Halfling Rouge 4

Alton strikes at the thing as it moves away again, a small part of him wondering whether its a good thing or not that Abel doesn't see him as enough of a threat to attack.
attack 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 9 + 1 = 30 damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Don't know if that still counts as flanking, if yes the extra damage is here 2d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7

Alton Hill-Topple wrote:

attack d20 +9 +1 damage d6+2

\

Yes on flanking. Roll to confirm crit too.

"Abel! Stop!" Nicholai's voice rolls out. Despite the obvious pain, it still echoes with authority. Gritting his teeth against the pain in his mangled arms, Nicholai climbs to his feet as Alton moves to intercept the undead monk.

Climbing to your feet is still only a move action? Or is it a full-round action now? If a mvoe-action, Nicholai gets up and casts a spell. If a full round, then he sits up, but does not waste time standing up, instead casting his spell from a seated position.

"Abel. You. Will. Stop." Nicholai calls firmly to Abel's back. He raises his hands once more and begins casting, being slow, deliberate and precise in his casting either due to his injuries, or his feelings about Abel. He finishes, pointing his right hand at Abel and saying aloud the final phrase in a voice that sounds both joyous and sad, condemning and forgiving. As the final syllable flows from his tongue, a ray of brilliant scarlet fire flashes from his fingers, briefly illuminating the church in red light as it stabs towards Abel,...

Scorching Ray, 1 ray, touch att: includes bonus from inspire courage

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 144d6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 4) + 1 = 17

Standing up is a move action.
Make a caster level check please to overcome spell resistance.
I realised I probably should have asked for that from Kajetan as well, but the saving throw I rolled somewhat negated the need.

Aye-aye! CL check rolling,...
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

EDIT- I'll take that as a good thing? ;)

That’ll work. I’ll wait until Laithe makes his AoO (or not) and Alton confirms his crit (or not) before adjudicating the result.

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

I thought Keildrithe had already dragged Bernardino to the back door. Keildrithe would now be blocking the back door... and that can't be good.

Male Halfling Rouge 4

confirm crit 1d20 + 9 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 9 + 1 + 2 = 19 damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Ok, that’s fine to have dragged him to the back door – in that case, Bernadino is now outside the church, in the walkway.

You can be standing in the back door if you like, I figured since you were inspiring courage this round you would probably be in sight of the action, eg, more likely standing in the doorway between the main church and the rear antechamber than the back door out of the antechamber.

Crit confirmed! Waiting on Laithe’s AoO, Laithe Keildirthe, Alton and Kajetan might also like to post their round 6 actions.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly... Yes, you are right, Keildrithe would be standing between in the doorway between the main church and the antechamber that connects with the outside, and Bernardino would be behind him, in the antechamber.
