This is the Discussion thread for my Jade Regent game. Players if you could please post your finalized characters here. Any questions can also be asked here.

Just out of curiosity has anyone played in Raise of the Runelords? If so how far did you get?

Depending on how much cleaning I get done today I might be able to get the romance tracker chart up and posted in the campaign info section tomorrow.

Shadow Lodge

Male

Dotting for later.

Male (Though Commonly Appears as Female) Aasimar, Tian descent Ninja lvl 1

I am Tanimoto Shoji. Barmaid at the Rusty Dragon. Ready for adventure.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

Introducing Masaru Haganekaze, a young man trying to follow in the footsteps of his late father and famed Tian swordsman.

Female Halfling Sorceror - Ice Linnorm : 2

Kerri Corynian, shy girl who frequents the Rusty Dragon every day to speak with Ameiko.

Oh and I have never played Rise of the Runelords.

Male Half-elf Rogue (Scout)/1

Caerwyn Callandriil, Half elf Scout and member of the Sandpoint militia.

Male Kitsune Wolf Shaman Druid 01

Godfrey Warden at your service, sirs and ma'ams. Stableboy and vagabond extraordinaire.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

I didn't realize I previously posted as Masaru under another Alias. >.<; So far, I'm really enjoying this role play. I agree with the DM's comment that this is going to be an excellent game. I get the feeling that it will be time to kill some goblins soon, heheh.

So now that everyone has responded to whats going on what do you guys think of this as a hook into the greater plot?

I think the pulling of the characters heart strings helps them be immediately invested in whats going to happen.

I think I've given you guys a pretty good reason to want to kill the goblins lol.

The traits that link the character to one of the four primary NPCs definitely brings the party together and links them to the story. And yes, it gives reason to kill goblins.

not that them being goblins wasn't reason enough...lol

The traits and the romance system are 2 of my absolute favorite things about this adventure path. It should be really interesting to see how things develop especially with this group that I get the feeling won't be afraid to roleplay.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

Once you mentioned the role play, I was happy and adjusted my stats better to reflect the character. 17 STR, 14 DEX, 14 CON, 10 INT, 11 WIS, 12 CHA. Do you think that seems balanced? If I wasn't the primary melee, I'd drop 14 CON for some INT and more CHA. I'm not sure what to expect combat wise. I prefer balanced characters but a lot of times you feel like you have to min-max to be effective. I just can't stand stats below 10. Besides, Masaru is going to have those social skills which he's going to work on raising.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

I hope you don't mind me posting as much as I have been this evening. I'm deployed to Afghanistan and it seems your computer time is in line with my evenings that I have as my personal time. Also, for my fellow role players I don't want to come off as taking the spot light in any way, shape or form. I'll happily engage you in one on one encounters here. I do anticipate a differing relationships like Masaru being fond of Kerri while Tanimoto makes him feel awkward.

Male Half-elf Rogue (Scout)/1

Sorry everyone. I've been in a programming class all morning and will be for most of the afternoon as well. Then I have my wife's company dinner party tonight, so this day is going to be shot for me. I will try to post something this evening if I get a chance.

Oh good I'm not the only one that feels awkward around Tani...it doesn't help that I know him in real life and could honestly see some of those traits in him lol(love you buddy).

Caerwin its fine that you can't post, its not like anything really important is happening, just some roleplay that I'm sure you'll enjoy reading.

Today is a little odd in that I'm on more than I usually am(or should be) but I couldn't walk away from this game this morning so I decided to skip lunch and visit another library so I can keep up with things.

Just so you guys know my usual availability is posted below. All times are CST(GMT-6).

DM availability:

Monday: 9-11:30 AM
Tuesday: 9-11:30 AM
Wednesday: 11 AM-1:30 PM
Thursday: 9-11:30 AM
Friday: 9-11:30 AM

Female Halfling Sorceror - Ice Linnorm : 2

I don't mind the constant posting, I am here nearly all day anyway. I go away for my afternoon shift and come back to a tonne of reading and posts, its great. I am enjoying this so far and think we have a good group here. I have previously played with DM Mathpro and Tanimoto, so I am hoping that my role-play style isn't the same.

Ah, just in case you need it, my time zone is GMT : +0 (Yes, I live in jolly old England.)

Male Kitsune Wolf Shaman Druid 01

My time zone is EST i think thats GMT-5. and with the advent of the smart phone I can at least post something everyday. I just need to figure out how to fit in the dynamic that is present with Tani and Mas. Plus they dont seem to like Koya much, Should I regret taking the Foster Child trait?

Glad that everyone seems to be having fun. The Foster Child trait is fine Godfrey, once we get through the first part of this and form into a caravan I'm sure things will get more interesting. Feel free to come to your "mom's" defense more often.

Oh and how do you feel about you're "brother" Sandaru? I think there could be some really cool roleplay between the two of you.

Male (Though Commonly Appears as Female) Aasimar, Tian descent Ninja lvl 1

Having fun with this group. I miss Mags from the last Jade Regent I attempted. Her reactions to Tani were hilarious.

Also, my beef with Koya is that of a bratty little girl to her elder. Mostly for fun on my part.

Lastly I see there might be a romantic rivalry between my crossdresser and the fox boy over Shalelu

Hey tani I probably should have asked this before I assumed something but Shalelu knows your a man right?

Male Kitsune Wolf Shaman Druid 01

hey no one knows I'm foxy yet. I have been nothing but a "real boy". Besides hes a 17 year old boy anything that moves is of a romantic interests.

Godfrey Warden wrote:

Oh so true. Thanks for the laugh I needed it.

Okay guys I'm going to be taking off in about 20 minutes for my Carrion Crown game...so I won't be on until tomorrow morning.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

Have a great day, DM Mathpro!

And Masaru doesn't have any problems with Koya at all, he's pretty respectful. Aso given that Sandaru has not been introduced yet, I could see Masaru having a rivalry with him. We'll see, you have to change it up!

Oh, and Shalelu is getting that booze... Don't steal my thunder. :)

Male Half-elf Rogue (Scout)/1

OK, I'm a lttle confused. Who knows that Tani is actually a boy? It seems like I'm the only one who doesn't (but that's OK, because I'm not supposed to, or am I?) Also, who knows that Godfrey is a Kitsune in disguise? It seemed from the posts yesterday that these were among some of the worst kept secrets ever.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

1. Masaru has not yet recognized Tanimoto as a boy.
2. No player should know that Godfrey is a Kitsune unless he says otherwise.

Female Halfling Sorceror - Ice Linnorm : 2

I : I know that Tanimoto is male, but keeping it quiet.
II : I have no idea what a Kitsune is, let alone that Godfrey is one.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

Kitsune: Shape shifting fox-people from Tian-Xia. They were released in the Dragon Empire's Primer. I think they are in the gazetteer as well. The primer is the same book that my sword-saint archetype for the samurai is from. Its pretty awesome given it trades out the mounted and banner related class abilities.

Female Halfling Sorceror - Ice Linnorm : 2

That is cool, I don't have that book though. So I will learn about them from Godfrey through this campaign. Best way to learn after all. I did always think that the Mounted and Banner abilities were useless for a Samurai unless going for a leadership based one. At which point the Cavalier is better suited.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

The sword-saint is an awesome archetype. I get an iaijutsu strike on the target of my challenge which acts like a sneak attack essentially if I start the round with my sword sheathed and attack. The additional abilities just make it better like improving my critical confirmation roll, causing an area of effect shaken effect and an area if effect deafen effect with the attack. I'm actually a big fan of samurai and the Legend of the Five Rings RPG so it really appealed to me.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

I read over the Jade Regent Player's Guide and wanted to know if you'll post the friendship levels and information about gifts and insults.

Yes I'll be working on that once I get home today :).

I'll post it up in campaign info once I get the chart created. Basically I plan listing out all the NPC's and the PC's in a spread sheet and then filling in the friendship levels.

Given I intend on befriending Ameiko, I'd like to see my progress and get an inkling of a feeling as to what she likes.

Need to figure out how to calculate friendship scores again...I think it has something to do with your cha mod but i'm not sure...and I don't have the players guide with me at the moment.

I'm heading home now so I'll get it figured out and posted tomorrow.

Okay guys I should have mentioned this earlier but I’m going to be using the Relationship system that’s included in the Players Guide. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it I will summarize it below(see the relationship system summary and gift spoilers below). The way I’m going to be running relationships is each PC starts out with a relationship with the NPC specified in their campaign trait. If you want to start additional relationship you need to notify me here as well as mention if that relationship is going to be friendly or competitive. I then want you to keep track of your relationship’s in your profile. Basically just note what NPC’s you have relationships with and what the scores are. I’m also going to keep and up to date tab in the campaign information tab.

Relationship System Summary:

At the start of the game you can build relationships with: Ameiko, Koya, Sandru, and Shalelu. As the game progresses you will be able to build relationships with additional NPC’s. A relationship can be set up as either friendly or competitive. Some in game events can change a relationship’s status from friendly to competitive and vice versa but that is rare. If you want to deliberately change your relationship status you can do so by reducing your relationship score with that NPC by half.

Relationship scores
You’re initial relationship score with an NPC is equal to your charisma modifier and can be changed by doing any of the following:

1. Permanently changing your charisma score
2. You get a +4 bonus for starting a relationship with your trait specified NPC
3. Leveling up
4. Giving specific Gifts(friendship) or Insults(competition)
5. Special Events
Most of these actions will only increase your relationship score by one and upon level up you can only increase one relationship score. Gifts/Insults can also increase a relationship score by 2(see the below spoiler for an explanation of gifts and insults).

Relationship Levels
As your Relationship Scores with NPCs increase, your Relationship Level with an NPC increases as well, as listed below.

Score of 5 or less-Association- You and the NPC know each other, but not well enough to have formed a significant opinion about each other.

Score between 6 and 11-Friendship(Competiton)- You are a good friend or known competitor of the NPC.

Score between 12-30- Fellowship(Rivalry) - You have strong ties to the NPC, either through deep mutual respect and admiration or through a strong sense of competition and conf lict. As long as the other NPC is alive, you gain a +1 morale bonus on all Charisma-based skill checks.

Score above 30 – Devotion/Emnity - You and the NPC are devoted to each another, or are actively opposed to one another. If you reach this Relationship Level with the NPC associated with your Campaign Trait, the trait bonus granted to you from your Campaign Trait doubles. In addition, your relationship with the NPC is strong enough to grant you a boon, whether your relationship is friendly or competitive. The nature of this boon differs for each NPC. The effects of this boon last for as long as the NPC is alive and active in the campaign. I will let you know what the boon effects are when it becomes relevant.

Romances
If you’re relationship score is high enough with a particular NPC you can start a romance with them. Since Paizo is a family environment(and we’re roleplayers not erotica writers) we will fade all romance scenes to black. Once per level, you may attempt a Sense Motive check (DC equal to the NPC’s Romance Score) to determine whether an NPC is potentially interested in a romance with you. If the NPC is interested in a romance with you, you must make a successful Diplomacy check (DC equals 10 + the NPC’s level + the NPC’s Charisma modifier) to begin the romance. The romance ends if your Relationship Score with an NPC ever drops below that NPC’s Romance Score. Each time a romance ends, that NPC’s Romance Score increases by 5. Romances do not grant additional in-game bonuses or benefits, but might grant situational benefits, opportunities, complications, or even dangers during the course of an adventure. An NPC can only be involved in a romance with one PC at a time.

Note that a PC can have a romance with an NPC with whom she has a competitive relationship—opposites do sometimes attract. If the PC’s Diplomacy check to start a romance is successful, the romance begins, and the nature of the PC’s relationship with that NPC immediately changes from competitive to friendly. This change does not necessitate reducing the Relationship Score by half in this case.

Gifts/Insults:

A special gift can increase a friendly Relationship Score with an NPC, while a perfectly crafted insult can increase a competitive Relationship Score. You can give a gift or an insult to an NPC once per character level— when ever you want to give a gift/insult let me know and make a Diplomacy check(for gifts) or Intimidate Check(for insults). The DC for this check is equal to your current Relationship Score with the NPC. Depending on you’re timing this DC can have a +4 modifier(good timing) or a -4 modifier(bad timing). If you succeed at the check, your Relationship Score with that NPC increases by 1 point. If you exceed the DC by 10 or more, your Relationship Score increases by 2 points instead.
Giving a gift to a competitor actually reduces your Relationship Score, as does insulting a friend. You must still make the appropriate skill check (Diplomacy or Intimidate); a success reduces your Relationship Score by 1 or 2 points, as above.

Current Relationship scores:

Tani: Shalelu- 9(added one for taking care of her)
Godfrey: Koya- 6
Caerwyn: Shalelu- 5
Kerri: Ameiko- 9(added one for taking care of her)
Masaru: Ameiko- 6(added one for taking care of her)

Just an FYI guys I'm going to be with out a car until tomorrow at the earliest and possibly longer so I won't be able to get online. Need to get some break work done. Feel free to role play as you wish and I'll get back as soon as I can.

Also if there you want to start relationships with any of the other NPC's post that here as well as what type of relationship you want.

Male Kitsune Wolf Shaman Druid 01

I actually am looking to build a relationship with all with Sandru itll be more brotherly, Koya relationship is that of a child/mother. and Ameiko and Shalelu would be romantic interests.

Female Halfling Sorceror - Ice Linnorm : 2

I think I just want to be friends with everyone, but Ameiko more than the others.

I don't have any romantic plans yet, think I will just see where the road leads me.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

The angle I'm going to play is a friendship with Shalelu and Ameiko, a friendship with Koya in a respectful youth to elder fashion, and a potential friendly rivalry with Sandru. Playing up Masaru's heritage, he's likely going to pledge himself to Ameiko as a samurai and develop romantic interests. There is the whole Tian heritage in there. :)

Male (Though Commonly Appears as Female) Aasimar, Tian descent Ninja lvl 1

Tani is already infatuated with Shalelu. She is everything he wants in a woman and often dreams of being her wife and adventuring at her side.

He is not fond of old people. His master was a crabby old man who smelled real bad. Since Tani loves fragrances and perfume, he has a problem with bad smells, especially old people smell. He won't easily get along with Koya.

Sandru is no one special, just another man

Ameiko is his boss and a good friend.

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

So, ninja openly tell random strangers they're in fact ninja? *Chuckles.*

Male (Though Commonly Appears as Female) Aasimar, Tian descent Ninja lvl 1

No but I am in fact ex ninja *giggle*

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

Ninja = Assassin, not something Masaru will take lightly.

Okay I'll get scores added shortly. Good to see you guys investing in this and I'm also glad to see the posting continued in my absense. I'm back by the way and the car is fine...500 dollars later...

Male Human Dad/6

Man, I hate trying to compose a post at work and getting interuppted by, you know, actual work that it takes so long that my big, dramatic scene is <Crushed> by the GM.

sorry...

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1

Its all fine to me, I just want to crush something already, now.

Shadow Lodge

Male

Male Human Samurai (Sword Saint) 1
