Nosatrub

The paladin finds the crow's nest has more room than was apparent from the deck. He and the spotter have space to move and observe freely.

"Been a while since we had a paladin on board." Albert the spotter mentions. He puts a hand on a small shelf worked into the nest's interior where two spyglasses rest. "Them's been magicked ta let ya see like o' elfie. So night spottin's easier." The tone in Albert's voice is obviously one of admiration towards Nosatrub.

The younger man rubs self-consciously at the flat side of his head where his ear is missing. "Lost it in Katapesh...twernt no fight 'r nothin'. Me n' some o' the crew took sick after checkin' a barrow....guess I'm lucky ta be upright." At the risk of rambling, Albert grabs one of the spyglasses and hands the other to Nosatrub. Then he proceeds to search the starboard horizon.

Left to see the port side, Nosa commits to searching. His eyes open wide briefly as he notes the view through the lens is brighter, details sharper even in the night. (Looking thru the spyglass gives you low-light vision and a +5 to perception checks)

The distant monoliths of black that made up the natural walls of the cove in which they are anchored leap into view. Note brighter, Nosatrub can make out the craggy, black surface of volcanic rock. Mixed in are patches of lichen and the occasional sleeping seabird. The paladin goes from one monolith to the next then lowers the glass to view the surface of the water. The gentle roll and the white lines of cresting waves are nearly entrancing and peaceful. But something tugs at the corner of his eye. He shifts view and spots it. There appears to be debris in the water. Scattered planks of wood and a few barrels bob along lazily.

Then he sees more. One...two...three forms that could be bodies floating face down.

Nosa quickly reaches over and taps Albert, pointing out what he believes to be bodies in the water.

Do you see what I see? he says.

As he awaits the answer, he catches Beckett from the corner of his eye, hailing him. He indicates to Beckett that he needs a moment and points in the direction that he sees the bodies, hoping that Beckett knows to follow where he is pointing to.

The other bard looks offended, but Drogan calms him with a gesture "Calm yourself, ya know it's true, old friend." Agidor shrugs his shoulders and continues with the game.

"Not entirely sure you'll need to hear about it. Safe to say - we're about to look into the darkness and see if it blinks." Another pregnant sigh, [b]"An' only time will tell if they'll even know how to end our stories. But enough about that."

He leans forward to Velryssa, speaking softly so only she can hear. "Flirt with 'im a little. He's harmless overall, but if you give 'im a wink, he'll probably double 'is bet a time or two just to make you think he's a big man."

"Since you await the outcome of this affair, what say you and the quiet half-elf in the corner entertain us with the why's of your voyage. Not many choose to go to Golsifar, it's a way station really." She draws her index finger, tipped with a long lacquered nail along the table like she's tracing a map. "So the question is, where are you and your band on the way to?"

Blinking rapidly for a moment, Phedron looks at Velryssa as if seeing her for the first time. On a ship full of people he doesn't know, heading for a destination that may kill him IF they find what they're looking for, he has been lost in thought.

"Mmm? Yes, where ARE we heading?" he asks with as much curiosity as Velryssa. He adjusts his jacket. The book in his interior pocket just doesn't seem to let his clothes lay correctly. "The good dwarf gives as accurate an answer as you could want. Our journey is one for knowledge." he says, intentionally adding to their crypic hints. Having cast his line, he now waits to see if her curiosity will want to keep the conversation going, so he starts to reel in in hopes of hooking some useful information. " I can only imagine that you are well traveled. What can you tell us about Golsifar and ... surrounding areas? What other towns are near there?" I for one have never traveled to the area."

What I wouldn't give at my age to have some elf blood in my veins so that Chronis wouldn't have so much influence in my life.

Karl grins and indicates with an open palm the direction he is traveling in for the captain.

"While I do most enjoy this converstation we are having, please pardon the interruption for it is not voluntary on my behalf. It appears something has just struck the hull of your ship Captain. We would be remiss if we failed to go see what it is. Hopefully just a rogue kelp bulb or an over exuberant sea otter cracking urchins, but assumptions are the mother of all mess ups wouldn't you agree."

<sigh>

First watch on the first evening no less! What is it now? Underwater ass kicking monks asymetrical swimming cult of chaos? We may need to accelerate our investigation into the contents of the hold. They've already made out our boy wonder in shining white underclothes.

"Nosa! What can you see from there? Make sure you keep watch on all sides. Especially those opposite to the one we are giving our attention to."

I don't want to be boarded easily because we fall for a simple distraction.

"Have you spotted it Mr. Beckett?"

"Ah! Good timing Lavios, step lively with that trident."

Albert shifts to the port side of the crow's nest, squeezing in alongside the big paladin. He scans the waters with both naked eye and his spyglass. It doesn't take him long to nod agreement. "Aye, I'm seein' it too," Albert leans over the edge and shouts. "Cap'n, gots bodies n' debris in the watuh!"

Beckett
The Inquisitor of Sarenrae, grim impatience suffusing his veins, tears his gaze from the crow's nest. Albert's announcement confirms that yes they'd seen something. But did he say bodies? Extending the senses blessed to him by the sun goddess, Beckett seeks the truth of the nature of this new development. From his place in the deck, he immediately senses the mysterious object in the cargo hold. Perhaps earlier, since the entryway to the golf was forward the ship...the object is towards the rear. But from this place, he too senses something faintly evil. An object of some kind.

Elsewhere, his senses extend to the seas near the port side. From his perspective, there is nothing else evil in the area. But as he scans the surface of the sea, he spots other shapes resolving. Broken planks, a barrel...then a body comes into view.

Lavios
The Inquisitor of Gozreh emerges from his quarters to the cool but humid night air. His prayers and devotions complete he lets gaze sweep the deck, finding Beckett on the port side. The hammer-wielding warrior is serving or something over the side.

Then one of the crewmen in the crow's nest above calls out.

Karl
The old warrior looks upwards when Albert calls out from the crow's nest.

"If I didn't know any better, Mr Marsh, I'd mark you a seer." Onura waves response to the nest. "Give me sharp eyes, Mr Albert! I want a count and source!"

Towards the main deck. "Kraken, get me Rollo and Feezle. Ready the port netting and rig the hooks."

------------

Kraken responds to his captain immediately, knuckling his brow as he heads to the rail where Beckett is standing and checks the ties on the netting. "We use ta climb down, grab up tha flotsam, Sun-speaker." The half-orc expand to Beckett, the honorific something new to the inquisitor's ears.

Then Kraken heads to the stairs down, his deep voice bellowing for Rollo and Feezle.

Velryssa shifts on her crate and stretches her back to elicit a satisfying crack. "Hmmm, Golsifar is like a red-striped remora; while it sets travelers aright for travel by sea or eastward..."

"...she sucks the blood from ya when ya ain't lookin'." Indrik finishes.

"Stay outta Kidge's Shop." Croaker adds, a touch of anger in his words.

"Like I said before, Golsifar is a way station. Smaller ships refit for passage back north, ships from across the Inner Sea do the same." Velryssa pulls another pair of coins and adds it to the pot. "Then there is the overlanders. Phalanx, merchants and mercenaries heading east to Demgazi, Zimar or Lionsguard. Even the forts along the border."

"Ya seekin' knowledge, huh?" Smacks Seamus, finding he has more time to chat while not wagering. "Yer goin' ta Demgazi, then. Goin' ta the fancy school ya are, eh?"

"Saint Antoinette's of the Golden Key," Velryssa clarifies. "The only school in the south. It overlooks Demgazi from a hill, half in and half out of a dense forest." She slips a sidelong smile Agidor's way, spurring the guitarist to push his luck and match her bet. She continues. "Caravans going through Demgazi never find a welcome. They tell of a town council forcing travelers and merchants to stay outside while in the area. The only ones allowed in are the few bringing children for the school."

"Nobles been sendin' their brats there for years." Indrik says and matches the raise.

"Other boats sayin' more of 'em lately." Croaker settles his bet too. "Demgazi's full o' creeps I here. Unfriendly lot."

"Ya should fit right in, ya seasick raspuh!" Seamus wheezes. Croaker reaches across and shoves Seamus from his crate. But the old man continues laughing at his joke.

From the other side of the crew deck the heavy feet of Kraken thump down the stairs. His gruff voice calls for two of the crewmen asleep in their hammocks. "Rollo, Fezzle. On yer feet, Cap'n got work fer ya. Deadwood in tha water."

Croaker scoops his cup aside and sets it upright on the table. Without a word he follows Kraken and the two humans Rollo and Feezle back up.

After a moment fidgeting, Seamus stands from where he'd been knocked over and brushes off his dingy breeches. "You lot can stay n' play pass tha gold. There's deadwood a floatin'. I'm getting somethin' fer me onsies." He scamper off with a tottering gate and a chuckle.

"Old crab...scuttling after his meals." Velryssa shrugs and turns back to the table. "Deadwood means a wreck in the water. If there's trouble, the Windsinger will call all hands."

Nosatrub scans the waters below, focusing first on the survivor clinging to a plank. Of the man, there is no sense of evil. As he shifts focus to the other objects in the water, it is the same result.

"Ya, done pullin' yer puds? We got someone overboard." The cracking voice of Croaker calls from the stairs as he emerges from the lower deck. "Kraken, Rollo, rope ladder."

The old codger Seamus flaps onto the main deck, rubbing his gnarled hands together. "Wants a dingy in the water, Cap'n?" There's an eagerness in his tone.

"You and Feezle see to it." Onura replies, but her tone becomes a warning. "Tis a man alive in the water, you old scavenger. No salvage, so keep your grubby hands on the task, not their wares."

Four-tooth Seamus knuckles his brow and frowns. "Aye, Cap'n. C'mon, Feezle." The two head for the fore castle and the cranks to lower the port side launch.

"Mister Croaker, since you're here, I'll have you man the aft ballista for you'd be so kind." Onura is anything if cautious when it comes to ship and crew. Then to the four party members, she continues. "I'll need at least two of you here to aid Kraken at the rope ladder to bring up survivors. The others can join Seamus and Feezle in the launch."

Kraken begins unfurling the rope ladder, long enough to reach the ocean surface, broad enough to accommodate to men side by side. The big half-orc watches with a child-like grin as it hits the water, swinging a leg over the rail as he seeks the for else rung. But when he look outward towards the other objects in the water, his smile disappears. "Uh oh."

The party members see it too. One of the shadowy shapes Nosa had identified as a dead body, lurches upwards, jerks and is pulled under.

"Sharks..." Rollo mutters grimly. He and Kraken hesitate at the ladder, the froth of water in the distance marking where the aquatic predator is tearing into its new meal.

Below them, the rope ladder brushes along the ocean surface and even the plank on which the survivor floats.

Under the rail Nosa spots a boarding pike. The paladin grabs up the weapon and swings over the side, sure grip on the rope ladder and sheer strength getting him down to the water.

This close, he notes the man slumped over the plank is of midnight black complexion, a Mwangi if his knowledge of the world is accurate. His face is slack, eyes closed, breath coming in heaves of exhaustion. The man's clothing is simple; breeches a tattered shirt and a dark colored coat over one arm. The other arm is horribly canted in three different angles, blood slowly seeping through his shirt and into the water.

"Besmara...spare me...mercy..." Nosatrub can hear the man mumbling between gulps of air.

The plank on which he floats is roughly 5 ft X 10 ft, room enough for someone daring to stand upon it. (Acrobatics Check or Dex - DC 15 to maintain balance while standing / DC 12 maintain while trying to crawl)

Nosatrub grabs for the ladder, bringing himself up by one arm to attempt the climb once more. But his grip fails, sending him back to the wobbling platform and nearly into the inky black of the ocean. He’s forced back to all fours to maintain his balance and the water’s surface froths and rolls beneath him. In the brief instant his eyes fall upon the murky surface it’s as though twice as many dorsals are knifing by.

”By the Dawn’s Blessing, Nosa!” Beckett calls from above their heads. Karl and Nosa both look up to find the Inquisitor tearing at the rolled netting tied to the deck rail.

Shocked out of their stupor, Kraken and Rollo set into action to aid the party. Kraken pulls a boarding axe from his belt and cleaves the tie rope on the netting, kicking out with Beckett to send it unfurling over the side. At the same time, Rollo sets to keeping the rope ladder steady as Karl holds tight with one hand and maintains a grip on the wounded man with the other.

Gruhn Brassfitted stumps over to the rail, dwarven hands grasping at the netting as one end dips into the water near Nosatrub’s outstretched hand. Between the entire grouping at the rail, they manage to heave Nosa, Karl and the wounded man onto the deck. All concerned breathe heavily, especially Nosa and Karl.

”Rollo, get on the fore ballista,” Windsinger Onura steps forward and nudges the sailor. ”Kraken, get my ladder and netting secured before the fish find something to gnaw, they’ve been deprived of a meal.” She eyes Nosatrub and Karl, nodding respect to the two men’s initiative. Instead of stepping in, Onura gestures to the four party members. ”See to him, find out who he is and what ship he was on.” With that, she begins directing the crew and keeping an eye on the small launch as Seamus and Feezle row out to the debris field.

Karl, Nosa, Beckett and Lavios gather around the wounded man who is now laying in a pool of lantern light hanging from the mizzen. He folds into a fetal position, arm and neck muscles cording along his midnight black skin. A Mwangi is clearly his origin, but his culture appears influenced from elsewhere judging by the thick and long dreadlocks he wears. His sodden and bloody coat is of strange cut as well, bedecked with wooden and ivory trinkets, perhaps talismans.

”Besmara spare me, please....spare your man…” He whispers out between gritted teeth, eyes squeezed shut, the ruin of his left arm cradled in his right. The level of pain in the man seems to be preventing him from even acknowledging he’s out of the water.

Nosa thanks those involved in pulling him back to the ship, but his attention quickly turns back to the wounded man as he calls out to his deity.

Something spurs inside of him. Then, as if unconsciously, he kneels next to the man and closes his eyes and he remembers...

Nosa is following behind Veras, unable to leave the Paladins side, the carnage caused by the undead strewn about them. As they walk, they come upon a man, badly wounded and crying out. Vera's looks at Nosa and sees the look of fear. He places a gentle hand on his shoulder before turning to the man. He kneels and places his hands on the man and closes his eyes, silently calling on The Lady. His body begins to glow and power flows through him and into the man. Nosa watches, amazed as the wounds close and heal, and the man regains his wits. Veras looks up, exhausted from the event. "The power of a Paladin is not only to protect, but to heal as well. One day, you will be called on to lay hands on someone in need. The Lady will guide." He stands up slowly and wavers, but smiles as Nosa reaches out to help. "Come, there are more that may have need of us."

Nosa reaches out and lays hands on the wounded man and feels the light of the Lady flow through him.

Nosa:

You feel a warm comfort descend upon your shoulders. A gentle breeze pushes along the deck and towards the wounded man. In you ear, a distant voice echoes...

"There is no gift greater, no act of bravery or conscience higher, than to leap to the defense of a stranger. To put your body in place of theirs when death approaches." The warmth covering your shoulders increases like a mother's embrace. "Well done, my Sword Bearer."

Karl:

You watch as Nosa lays hands on the dying man. A glow emanates from his hands, a warm breeze drifts along the deck, and a shimmering glow coalesces next to the paladin. An ephemeral vision of an armored woman, the red cloak upon her shoulders blowing behind her despite the weight of the cloth. Her black hair flows as well, mixing with the cloak like an artist's oil painting.

You know that no one else sees this, especially when after the vision whispers something into the paladin's ear, she looks directly at you.

"Take heart, (she calls you by your given name) the gods do see, they do care." With that, she gives Nosa a grip upon his shoulder then disappears.

The rescued man stirs at the paladin's touch and grits his teeth as the healing takes effect. A subtle nimbus surrounds several areas on his body, brightest near his ruined arm. The last begins to straighten and repair. It isn't a full healing, but even though he doesn't open his eyes, the man breathes easier now.

Karl had been seeing something else beyond what was playing out on the deck. Instead of a ebony skinned sailor, it was a small child in Karl's likeness bleeding out on the deck. That was until she arrived and startled Karl back into reality.

As she dissipated Karl selfconcioisly glanced out of the corner of his eye to see who had been watching him sit there with his mouth agape in amazement.

"Blessed be."

Karl moves up to stabilize Nosa. In an instant the old man's feelings and additudes towards the boys, all of them had shifted.

What did she say to him?

Karl called over to Lavios.

"Lavios! Nosa stabilized him, but I need you to heal this man further. We have need of the information he has."

Drogan and Phedron

Phedron says: "Demgazi sounds to have a horrid reputation. Is the school so regarded that it's still a destination? A closed city is sure to peak curiosity. Have you heard no tales?"

"The school has quite the reputation," Velryssa responds, not moving from her seat. "St Antoinette's has been perched over Demgazi for three centuries. Some of the Imperial Navy's finest navigators came from there. It's the prestige more than anything. A noble's ability to claim they've sent their overindulge brat to St Antoinette's of the Golden Key."

"As for the town? Indrik adds. "Well it has its own share of rumors when it comes to unwelcome guests. You don't need high walls to keep merchants and the like outside. Just have stories of missing travelers, bad food...even tales of utter boredom in a town with no taverns." The stoic sailor with the blackstone eye shudders. "What sort of town doesn't have a tavern?"

The round of Liar's Fives comes to a close, surprisingly finding Linkah the winner of the pot. Velryssa prepares another round after the Halfling ceases his ribbing of the other players.

"Merchants and the like have a makeshift string of tents south of Demgazi, just under a rise so the townsfolk won't see or hear. They don't like it, but they have to trade like everyone else." She stretches her hands, delicate knuckles cracking as she exudes a contented purr. "Travelers call their little tent village, Inspitah. If you can't get into Demgazi, you can find supplies and such down there."

Phedron:

Outside, Caster patches atop the fore mast, surveying the happenings and enjoying the gentle roll of the ship. He feels content to watch the other two-legs of your aerie as they struggle to rescue another two-legs from the water.

Knowledge (religion) DC 13:

Besmara, also known as the Black Lady, is a goddess most commonly worshiped by the sailor-folk of the Shackles or Ilizmagorti. Her symbol is the jolly roger, a universal emblem of piracy, normally a white skull and crossbones on a black field.

Pirates don't tend to be a very religious lot, and generally only call on her on their deathbed or if in extreme danger. Those few priests who do devote themselves to her, generally also are captains of their own raiding ships and have a fierce reputation.

Nosa accepts Karls help in steadying himself. He had no idea that giving healing like that would drain him of his energies. He remembered Veras standing tall and strong often after healing. Perhaps he would learn in time and grow strong enough to do the same?

Karl assesses the man's condition as he pulls a tightly wound roll of bandages from a hip pouch. Despite Nosa's healing which reset the ruined arm, the causes of the damage are still apparent. Beckett and Nosatrub and Lavios watch as the old warrior sets to work. Years in the field and in seeking the truth of urban crimes has sharpened his perception of these things. A wounded man's body, as live or dead, tells a story.

Under the yellow lantern light, the man's dark skin betrays deep bruising. A deeper purple along the wrists of both arms... raw flesh along the left wrist to get with the formerly broken condition of the arm. Raw flesh where the bone had protruded... Shoulder showing signs of bruising, perhaps Nosa's blessing had healed a dislocated shoulder... Amazingly there are no animal wounds to speak of...

Karl binds up a pair of slashing wounds along the abdomen and the leg. Finally, as he searches the man's clothing for clues, he draws a conclusion.

This man had been a prisoner of some sort, bound tightly. But his clothing doesn't bear the markers of an official penitentiary. Judging by the information gathered, in the course of his confinement he'd set his will to freedom. The angle of the bruise on the shoulder suggests he dislocated it himself to loosen his bindings. So it begs the question, why was he a prisoner? And who'd held him?

Karl:

Karl's hands close over something in the man's coat pocket, a smooth object the size of an acorn. His thumb feels the telltale carvings of a face on one side.

If he's so inclined, he can palm the object with a Sleight of Hand check. You can attempt to do so before this next part

Windsinger Onura gestures for Gruhn Brassfitted to watch the helm as she approaches the scene. She eyes the unconscious man, suspicion clear in her eyes. "Let me see his face..." She squats on her haunches and rolls him on his back, the lantern light running over his dark skin. Ritualistic scarring draws pattern of ocean and shark motifs, giving him a weighted aspect when considering what he'd weathered to acquire such markings.

"I don't like this... You've assessed him?" Onura looks to Nosatrub. "I saw your work and have seen your battle attire when joining the ship. Few clerics dress in such a way. So, did you assess him?"

A nod from the paladin. (hope I'm not out of line with your pc)

Onura looks away, satisfied on the surface but clearly of a paranoid nature to allow some doubt to dwell on the shallows. "These trinkets," she rattles a few of them with her finger tips. The action elicits a notice cringe from Kraken. "...totems to Besmara, the Pirate Queen. If this fish is a believer, a cleric or dedicated of some sort, chances are he was captain over a ship." Onura looks down at the unconscious mystery and gently pats his cheek. "So Mr Fish, what is it you bring to me and mine?"

She stands and strides to the rail, brushing a lock of stray hair from her face. Her keen eyes stare out into the night towards the launch, a bullseye lantern bobbing. Onura whispers several words as though speaking to the launch directly. After a fashion, she nods and turns away.

Perception DC 15 to Hear:

Onura is speaking in a low whisper, "Whatever happened here, I want you to gather what you can to know the right of it. Don't pillage the dead or I'll have your wrinkled carcass on the top sails by morning."

From the distance, you hear Seamus' whispered reply. "Aye aye, Cap'n. Ain't found much o' nuthin'. Some broken hull, bits o' sail. Three deads, look like the sharks been worryin' at 'em, but sword r' axe what done 'em in fer true."

Onura responds. "The hull debris, what sort of damage?"

Seamus, "Burns n' pokers...mayhap some magickin' cause I ain't seein' signs o' fire."

"Finish your search. You have 1 hour and we pull anchor."

"Aye aye."

"Mr Albert, report!" Onura barks up the mizzen.

"Alls clear, Cap'n."

Onura looks to the four members of the party present, then focuses on Nosatrub. "I've a need to rouse the crew, so Mr Fish here is to be you and your friends' responsibility. Take him below to the secondary quarters and watch him. Get him talking so I know what happened here." Then to Kraken, "All hands Mr Kraken. See Indrik gets the crew up and ready."

She turns to make for the aft castle and the wheel. "Mr. Brassfitted, a night course if you please."

Nosa, Beckett, Karl and Lavios arrive in their crew quarters without incident.

Karl:

That sinking feeling of being found out gnaws at you, but Onura has elected to not say anything at this point. When you have the chance to look at it, you've managed to collect an ivory carving a youthful face with a smooth circlet about his brow. No color but the white ivory, but you can think the face is human in its representation.

On its right cheek, the ivory is worn smooth.

With that perception roll, you clearly saw Karl pocket something from the unconscious man. You also noted that Onura saw it too, but said nothing.
