Round 1

Seeing the threat building, Argor immediately takes to the sky and hovers above the panicked crowd, surveying the situation.

"Nyugusk, tend to our flank," he says, pointing towards the one by the rear exit. "Thrassk, fend off the traitorous mercenary while we tend to the rest of these demons."

He then quickly begins the motions and incantations of a summoning, and through five silvery portals, the once familiar, harmonic screech of celestial eagles cries out over the din of combat and fear. The avian onslaught unleashes upon the demons arrayed against the heroes and civilians, lashing out with claw and beak at the hellish creatures.

Cladissa had hung close to the other Pathfinders, trying to remain cool despite inwardly fuming about nearly being hacked to pieces by the Ulfen warriors earlier. She allowed Argor to use the wand of infernal healing on her, wondering if the sick crawling way the spell stitched her wounds together was exacerbated by his use of the item. She similarly suppressed a shudder when he followed-up with prestidigitation to clean the blood-stains off her dress. She would have to wait until later to memorize the spell that would repair the tears in it.

The attack from the Onyx Alliance was unexpected, but she responded quickly along with the others in the group. After Argor took flight and summoned a cadre of eagles to harass the demons, she narrowed her eyes at the speaker.

"You know of us? Then I'll give you a chance to surrender, and release all the slaves you have taken to your realm. In the meantime," she adds, pointing her finger at him with a gesture and incantation, "you should sit down. You look tired."

A black ray shoots forth at the mercenary.

The Transmogrifying Lotus nods to Argor. I may not be much for negotiations, but fighting beasts I can do.

He steps opposite the eagle for maximum distraction and then rips into it. He catches the demon in his grip and begins to crush it, despite its magical resistances. The layer of goop coating its skin turns out to be some kind of acid. The acid burns Nyugusk as he works to kill the demon.

Hrim takes to the air borne on his wings of shadows. He draws his bow and targets an outsider. His prayer to Count Ranalc on his lips as he fires. The arrow buries into its hide.

Thrassk steps up to the mercenary, and begins to bite and claw at him. He only manages to hit the man once, but the claw swipe nearly disembowels the mercenary.

The merc steps back and attacks Thrassk with his polearm. His attack is weak.

The larger demons turn to attack the celestial eagles, and Nyugusk. The smaller demons continue to battle with the other guests in the pavilion as the less skilled wedding attendees flee for their lives. Two of the eagles go down, and one is heavily wounded by the demons' attacks.

The alchemist directs his other attacks at the last remaining babau, hitting it three times. As he does so, black oily smoke begins to pour from the downed mercenary's orifices. It coalesces into the form of a winged humanoid demon, with long black claws.

Thrassk roars and attacks this new foe, not caring what it might be. His claws and teeth pass harmlessly through the incorporeal thing.

The wounded babau kicks its companion awake and steps back.

Round 4

Hrim grimaces at the shadow and calls on Count Ranalc to attack it. The demon dodges the magical rapier.

Argor recognizes the shadow demon. "It's immune to normal weapons and resistant to magic and most elements on top of being incorporeal. Hit it with good aligned, cold iron or enchanted weapons!" He fires some magic missiles at it, but they fizzle out. The archon also fires two rays of light at the demon, but they hit the floor around it.

A shuddering blast of fear courses through Cladissa when she sees the dark form issue from the mercenary. She holds her ground, though, and chants words of power as she throws a bit of mica into the air. "Thrassk!杀死熟睡中的恶魔!" The demon is coated (and apparently blinded) by the burst of glitter.

Nyugusk gives a gasp but steels his tusky jaw, refusing to be cowed. He steps up to the shadowy creature and--not sure what else to try--launches into it with his pinchers, thinking, Perhaps the Magic Fang elixir will enable me to damage this, as it did versus those damned Allips? If that dust blinded it, now's the time to try! His supposition proves correct as his claws tear through the quasi-solid demon.

Thrassk hisses and tucks tail, running from the tent in a panic.

The shadow demon growls, unable to see, and glides into the floor. A moment later the light in the tent seems to be sucked away and everything goes dark.

Argor continues to bide his time, waiting for their foe to reappear.

The archon continues to hover as well, spinning back and forth searching for the shadow demon.

It needs to make a DC 13 Will save vs the archons Aura of Menace.

Aura of Menace (Su): A righteous aura surrounds archons that fight or get angry. Any hostile creature within a 20-foot radius of an archon must succeed on a Will save to resist its effects. The save DC varies with the type of archon, is Charisma-based, and includes a +2 racial bonus. Those who fail take a –2 penalty on attacks, AC, and saves for 24 hours or until they successfully hit the archon that generated the aura. A creature that has resisted or broken the effect cannot be affected again by the same archon's aura for 24 hours.

Note, primarily for the realism of it. If the shadow demon continues to lurk around hidden, the lantern archon will send its beams this round at some of the "background" demons that are harassing the rest of the guests, namely some weaker ones that it could likely kill with one beam each. Just cause.

Yeah, for simplicity's sake I'm assuming that all of that has moved outside the tent at this point.

I'm 99% sure the demon is outside the aura of menace, but I'll check before I update again.

This thing is fighting smart, using hit and run tactics to try to thin out our numbers. Soon, it will be down to just myself, and I will be unable to offer much resistance without my sight...

Seeing Nyugusk finish off the remaining unconscious demon, Argor calls out, "Mr. Newblossom! Can you tear away some of the tent to let some light in here? These demons thrive in darkness, but struggle in the light!"

With that, he soars east through the back entrance, and draws on his well of arcane potential in preparation for further magics.

DM Jelani wrote:

Hrim is trying to pinpoint the square that the chanting shadow demon occupies.

"You may have been ready for me thisss time, Pathfinders. But you will hear from me again," says the shadow demon. A moment after the warning, the aura of darkness recedes into the ground, revealing a tent in chaos. Many of the lesser guests lay wounded or dead on the ground in and around the pavilion. The more skilled and celebrity of the attendees seem to have put up a good fight, as there are an equal number of steaming demon bits strewn about.

People each react in their own way. Some begin to help the casualties, others stand numbly. It isn't long before the Blakros matriarch steps in and takes control. Her iron voice cuts through the confusion and puts people on to appropriate tasks.

With the reception interrupted and the security of the island clearly breached, Hamaria Blakros calls the weekend's festivities to a close. Guests are quickly rounded up by surviving mercenaries and ushered to the
pier. The boat ride back to Absalom takes on a somber tone, any joy at the wedding eclipsed by the death and destruction the demons brought to Pariol Island.

During the ride back, the Pathfinders are approached by many, thanking them for their efforts. They are lauded as the heroes of the wedding. It seems quite certain the Society's prestige will grow greatly because of their actions. When the ship finally docks back in Absalom, Venture Captain Ambrus Valsin is waiting for them.

"Pathfinders, I've had word by sending of what happened. Terrible business! I'm glad to see all of you are okay. There will be no official debriefing for this mission, but I am here to tell you that you did well. Your payments will be sent along by courier as soon as possible. Take some time off and rest up, you never know when the Society will have need of its crack Absalom team again."

This ends the scenario. Well done. Everyone can go to level 6. You gain 5 fame. Finally, you get 3,180 GP.

I know people have downtime stuff they want to do, so go ahead as you please. Once things calm down I'll start the next scenario.

It takes some time before Cladissa comes around to herself. She climbs back down to ground level and does what she can to help tend the wounded. She busies herself with the treatment of injuries as an excuse to avoid the attention of the crowds and to take her mind off the island's developments.

She nods to Captain Valsin when they finally arrive in Absalom, smiles weakly, and heads straight to the estate, throwing a few coins to some dock workers to have her bags ported. Back in her room, she fills Cole in on the marriage and all the societal maneuverings that he'd missed.

After a day of rest and sorting her thoughts, she pens a report to the venture captains regarding the Blakros Matrimony and includes an exhaustive write-up of her conversation with Argor and their physical altercation. She finishes with the conclusion that her mind has been adversely affected by the serum and she was taking a leave of absence from the Pathfinders.

She gives Ms. Fecht the report and asks that she see it delivered to the Pathfinder Lodge. "I'm going on a retreat," she tells the maid. "Please keep my belongings secure."

Cladissa doesn't take anything with her. She wears an old dress that doesn't fit her very well anymore and pads off into the streets of Absalom. Cole follows her as she wends her way through the crowds until she passes through the gates of the great walls surrounding the city.

She follows the path that they took up into the mountains a ways beyond the surrounding lands of the city, but still removed from the wild regions populated by the Isle of Kortos' other denizens. She had spied the lush valley on their trip up, and this time she veers off the path and into the dense undergrowth.

Cole mews, which causes her to stop. Cladissa sighs, and looks at him. "Look, you don't have to come. In fact, you should probably go back now. There's not going to be much I'll need you for."

The midnight-black cat eyes her, and he meows pointedly. "I'm not giving up," she responds, defensive. She looks around at the wild valley and tests the air. "I'm... accepting it."

A low yowl issues from Cole. "If I don't come back, then you'll know," she answers, pulling off her dress and stuffing it into the hollow of a tree. Crouching, she gathers the cat into her arms and hugs him fiercely. "It's happening whether I like it or not. This way, it's my choice. And the others don't have to watch," she whispers, sniffling. "Now, go."

Cole meows as he watches Cladissa pad softly into the underbrush.

Spoiler:

She prowled.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knew that she had picked this valley for its beauty -- a lush, verdant jungle with a distant waterfall cascading over mossy rocks. But that decision, that consideration had faded along with thoughts of everything that came before. None of that mattered now.

All that mattered was the hunt. And if she was the hunter or the hunted.

She had explored the valley, mostly staying in the treetops and rarely venturing to the ground. It was effortless to move from tree to tree, move, pause, listen, smell. Her instinct was her guide, and all she needed. Thought was a distraction, full of painful memory.

Time passed. Her first kill was a tree snake that she came upon. A distant feeling of disgust passed fleetingly as her claws sliced it when she pounced on it. She fed, cleaned herself, and moved on. The feeling was gone for each kill after that. She hunted bird, fish, small mammal and even a small deer that had wandered beneath the branch she had been perched upon.

The nights and days came and went. She explored until she was hungry. Then she hunted until she fed, then slept. When she woke, she would start again.

She stayed wary of other threats, but she did not range beyond the borders of her territory. She was the apex predator of her valley and she was content.

TL;DR:

Cladissa goes feral. Estimated time, 2-3 weeks.

Argor basks in the glory being heaped upon him during the voyage back to Absalom. Though it had only been a matter of days since he had been there, he looked forward to returning and taking the time to actually enjoy some time off at his new estate.

He considered flying off ahead of the ship once the city came into view, but decided that would be in poor taste. Instead, he spent the last hour or so continuing to socialize with some of the upper echelons of Absalom's society.

Once the ship had anchored, he casually floats down the ramp and spots his valet patiently waiting ashore. He flies his direction slowly, and says, "Reginald, my things," without making eye contact. The man nods and heads aboard the vessel to gather Argor's belongings.

Argor soars straight for his manor, relishing in its splendor as he approached. He lands upon the front porch before waiting on his staff to open the doors, greeting him with "Lord Constantine," in unison.

He makes his way through the building, looking on as his servants went about their duties. The maids and butlers had done a fine job of keeping the place spotless. He looked out one of the windows to the grounds behind the manor and saw that his house slaves had begun work as commanded on the landscaping designs he had desired, a professional landscaper overseeing their duties.

Excellent work so far. This staff is by far superior to what I had dealt with previously.

He eventually met up with Jannicke, and the two greeted each other with a warm embrace and kiss. Before she could say much more than a greeting, Argor interjects "I have some matters to catch up on, but I look forward to speaking with you at dinner."

Without awaiting a response, he walks on to his office and closes the door.

He writes up a quick message:

Arryn,
I would like for you to look into the acquisition of some more property on my behalf. Specifically, a waterfront warehouse and rights to a portion of the docks.

He rolled it up and hands it to Arctyryx, "Deliver this to Arryn. Do not return until he has completed his task. Make sure it would be to my satisfaction."

The raven takes the missive in his talon, a quizzical look on his face. Argor gives the bird a stern look, and the familiar can clearly tell through his empathic connection that Argor was not in the mood for questioning his orders. The bird hops up and flies out the window on his task.
__________
That evening, Argor and Jannicke sat together at their dinner table, enjoying a meal of roasted bulette, garlic and gooseberry tart, and fine wine as Argor regaled her with the story of their latest venture.

"So the shadow demon just, fled? That is unfortunate. What do you think it will do next?" Jannicke asks.

Argor shrugged disinterestedly. "Likely nothing. It has lost the element of surprise against us as a team. If anything, it will seek to strike out at us individually, but even that is unlikely."

Jannicke shuddered at the thoughtof a demon striking out at them here in their home. A few moments passed in silence before she speaks up again. "And what of the others? Were you able to make peace with them?"

Argor sat his fork down and calmly wiped his mouth with a cloth napkin before answering. "That is doubtful. The malice they feel for me is profound, despite my sincere apologies. Cladissa even had the audacity to attack me with her claws when I tried to do so."

Jannicke looks at him shocked, "She did not!"

Argor nods. "Indeed, she did. A nasty scratch across my cheek that had to be mended with the magics of the wand so as to not raise questions during the wedding."

Jannicke shakes her head, trying to understand it all. "That seems so unlike her, she is so quiet and calm, and pleasant. What happened?"

"We were honestly having a pleasant conversation, for us at least, and she became emotional. I tried to offer her a consoling embrace, and in return, she lashed out at me like the feral animal she is letting herself become," he said as he snapped his fingers to his wait-staff. One moves over and he mutters, "Slice of peach cobbler."

"Argor! Don't talk about her like that!" Jannicke exclaims. "Did she seem that she wanted a hug?"

Argor shrugs, "Does it matter? She was emotionally disturbed. I offered her what is a commonly acceptable form of support in an effort to make amends to my previous transgressions she perceives I have made against her, and she responds with physical violence."

Jannicke looked on, slack jawed. "Of course it matters! She is a shy, quiet woman! You don't just go about hugging people just because you think it proper! You should have asked her permission first!"

Argor locks eyes on Jannicke's as she spouts her tirade. The servant returns with his pie, placing it in front of him, as he holds up a hand and says flatly, "Leave us."

The servants all quickly and quietly left the room. Once they were alone, Argor says, flatly, with no emotion, "I have lived my entire life asking for the scraps of others, for permission to do as I wish. That part of my life has ended. No more will I demean myself by asking my lessers for permission to do anything. Nor will I tolerate surrounding myself with those too ignorant to understand that fact."

Jannicke, growing furious herself, responds "Ignorant? You self-righteous..."

Argor slams a fist down on the table "YOU WILL NOT SPEAK UNLESS I PERMIT IT!" he shouts. He takes a breath, and stands. "I had hoped you to be smart enough to join me on this venture I had planned for us, but I see that just won't do. Reginald!"

The elderly valet opens one of the double doors into the dining hall and makes his way to Argor's side. "Reginald, see to it Ms. LeGrand's things are gathered and she is escorted off the premises. She is no longer welcome here."

"WHAT!? Have you lost your..."

Argor casts a stern glance her way and adds, "Another word, and your dismissal from these grounds will grow far more violent," he says as he drops his hand to his component pouch.

Jannicke scowls at him, tears forming in the edges of her eyes, as she turns away and storms off from the dining hall.

Argor himself storms off to his office, and slams the door behind him. He walks over to his desk, and violently shoves everything from its surface, before leaning over it, his breath heavy with frustration.

Suddenly, the familiar pain of the serum surgers forward in his skull, dropping him to the floor. He grits his teeth and clenches his fingers around the rug beneath his desk as he writhes in anguish. He feels his body change, the flesh of his back stretch unnaturally, as a pair of leathery, demonic wings sprout forth from his back before falling off moments later and dissolving away into a puddle of flesh colored gelatin. Horns sprout forth from his brow, curling back over his skull before painfully breaking away and likewise degrading. His hands and feet change as well, repeatedly morphing from claws to hooves to bird-like talons.

DAMNABLE SERUM! Get control of it, Argor! Do not let it best you!

He can feel his jaws quivering at the force with which he has clenched them, and can feel one of his molars snap under the pressure, before violently being ejected and replaced with a new, pristine one.

After several moments of this torture, the transmutations slowly begin to subside, and the pain goes away. Argor meekly reaches up and pulls himself to his feet with the edge of the desk, before looking for the mirror he had kept there. Remembering his earlier tantrum, he stumbles over and falls to his knees among the scattered items on the floor and sorts through them until he clutches the mirror in both hands and holds it before him. He does so just in time to see the wounds of the horns slowly close, his face otherwise appearing normal. He watches until all signs of the change vanish, then holds the mirror over his shoulder and sees that his back had likewise returned to normal. He sets it on the floor and calms his breathing...
__________
The next few days, Argor busies himself in his office, pouring over borrowed spell-tomes from the Society and the Arcanamirium, adding more spells to his own repertoire. Eventually, a knock at his office door draws forth the first words the mage had spoken since his outburst at Jannicke, "Enter."

Reginald walks in, with Arryn Giles behind him, Arctyryx sitting perched upon his shoulder.

Argor glances up, and seeing the young transmuter, turns back to his tome and asks, "Is it done?"

Arryn answers, "Almost, but before I made it all official, I just wanted to clarify that you indeed wanted to make this...acquisition. It is quite different than anything you had requested before..."

"I do not employ you to question my requests. Only to see them done properly. See it done."

Arryn sighs and says, "Yes, sir," before turning and heading out. Arctyryx hops off his shoulder and lands atop Argor's desk.

"Is everything alright, the other night, I felt..."

"Are you daft, Arctyryx? What was it I told you before sending you off?"

The raven thinks for a moment and says, "Umm...take this message to Arryn?"

"...and not to return until the task was done. Mr. Giles just stated he had not completed the task. So why are you still here?" Argor asks without raising his eyes from the tomes before him.

Arctyryx sighs, looks sadly at his master, then turns and flies out door after Arryn. Had the mage deigned to watch as the raven flew out, he would have noted a single avian tear land on his windowsill.

Once the shadow demon retreats, Hrim tends to the wounded healing the ones near death with his blessings of Count Ranalc. Often overlooked and unseen, the wedding party are too shocked to digest his effectively random sightings with the demon attack.

On the return to Absalom, Hrim basks in the warm sunlight on the bow a couple of times as an exotic experience. During these few periods, some recognize him as a hero Pathfinder and even one that he healed. Unused to the attention, he gets his fill and returns to the shadows saturated from attention. He shares meals with Nyug and Thrassk. Argor and Cladissa seem preoccupied.

After being dismissed by the Venture Captain, Hrim offers to share a cab with Cladissa, Nyug and Thrassk back to Jabberwocky. When he returns to the mansion, he requests Ms Fecht to prepare a picnic for two gnomes for the next day before he finally retires to his subterranean suite.

After a couple more days of intense study, Argor awakens to the smell of sulfur on the morning air.

His eyes dart around the room in his still sleep addled state, but realization quickly sets in. "It is rude to enter someone's house uninvited. I would have expected someone that considered themselves 'civilized' would know as such."

Rutai suddenly appeared sitting at the foot of the bed, his feet crossed as he casually ate a cherry he held in his hand like an apple. He was wearing a well crafted blue and gold silk suit. "True, but not many people would welcome me openly into their home, and I doubted that you had mentioned me to your servants yet."

Argor slowly moved his legs out of the bed to sit on the same side as the Imp, and rubbed his eyes to get the dried mucous away from their edges. Arctyryx glares at the imp from his perch atop the nightstand, and asks "Want me to kill it, boss? Or do you want to handle it yourself?"

Rutai snickered at the raven. "You can't be serious?"

"Enough," Argor said, holding a hand up to silence them both.

"But, boss, it's a damned demon!" Arctyryx exclaims, moments before a half-eaten cherry slams into the side of his beak.

"How dare you call me a demon, you dirty crow!" Rutai responds, now standing on his own perch, his tail flicking furiously behind him.

"I said ENOUGH!" Argor said once more, this time bringing the room to silence. "Arctyryx, this is Rutai, my former master's familiar, and until I say otherwise, a welcome guest. Is that understood?"

The raven said nothing, but Argor could tell through his connection to the avian that the raven acknowledged his order, despite his feelings of contempt for the devil.

"What brings you here, Rutai?" the wizard asks.

The imp flies down to the floor and acquires his cherry, inspects it, blowing away a small bit of debris, before taking it back to his spot on the foot-board. "Just wanted to check in with you, see how things went with the wedding, though word on the street would seem to be that you managed to make quite the impression, so I trust everything went well?"

Argor nods. "Yes, yes, everything went splendid. Despite the interference of a shadow demon, though he and his minions were dealt with quickly. Now if you'll excuse me, I have business matters to attend."

The imp, taking the hint, bid the wizard farewell before flying out the window, giving Arctyryx an insulting look before fading from sight as he departed.

Once he was properly attired and prepared, Argor and Arctyryx began making the rounds of his various businesses, leaving himself ample time to spare before he was scheduled for a meeting at the Arcanamirium.
