You didn't say it, you didn't do it.

Vyshael, please use grids or be more specific when referring to enemies. By lefty, I don't know if you meant leftmost on the map, or Vyshael's left hand side.

Vyshael steps up to the zombie line pressing to get out the door at Rutter, and chops into the one in the lead. He hews a big gap into its chest, but it isn't enough to stop the thing from diverting its attention to him.

Rutter follows right after the woman, and smacks her with his mace, reveling in the pleasure of finally getting to hit her for once. She winces a little from the pain of the blow, but looks like she wont give the satisfaction of letting it temper her humor.

Especially so soon after, when Neva steps up and barely gets close to the woman. She calls out cheerfully, "Oh lookit that, teeheehee the half-man is more woman than the old hag will ever be. he he he What's a matter nag, missed your chance of getting put out to pasture?"

As she calls insults at the two of them, the zombies all turn toward the two in the room they can get at, stopping first at Vyshael for how close he is. There must be something about the man, as they beat him mercilessly under their senseless strength.

Zombie 1, attack Vyshael, 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20, damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Zombie 4, attack Vyshael, 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20, damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Zombie 5, attack Vyshael, 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19, damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Raliscar, seeing an opportunity, decides to circle around, and hopefully cut the woman off from any escape. As he makes it into the kitchen, he sees the north door still closed.

Almost as soon as he does, though, the door opens from the other side by the elven jester. The woman opens the door, and prepares to enter, slightly startled by the appearance of the dwarf. With a giggle, she does a cartwheel away from Rutter, and towards Raliscar, where she tries to tumble through where he stands. She fails, but lucky for her, Raliscar couldn't strike out at her with his crossbow. She replants her feet, and tries again, but cannot seem to make her way around his steady position.

Felgar, steps into the room beside Vyshael, and helps to bring down the zombies in their way. Once again he tries to hack through two at once, and succeeds very well. The parts of costumed zombie topple to the floor in a mass of rotting flesh.

"HA! An' jus' where do you think you're goin'? Ye've been talkin' bout dancin' this whole time, so let's dance!" Planting his feet, Raliscar brings his crossbow up level with the woman's chest and pulls the trigger before she can spin away again. provikes an AoO

Vyshael winces under the blows, Should have cast shield.. or some other defensive magic... then nods grimly as Felgar cuts down the zombies. Well, that works... He steps back from the zombie, and whispers the incantation of defensive magic, bringing up a thin barrier of magical protection.

Vyshael takes a precautionary step away from the creature to put up some magical defenses that he bemoans to himself about forgetting earlier on.

Rutter waits to see what Raliscar will do before he acts, as Neva does the same for Rutter.

In the meantime, the remaining zombie steps closer toward Felgar and takes a swipe at the dwarf. The swing goes very wide.

Zombie 5, 5' to H14, attack Felgar 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Raliscar, seeing that the woman still only has her unloaded crossbow in hand, decides to shoot her from right in front of him. It's hard to miss at this range, and he plants a bolt hard up under her right breast. The shot knocks some of the wind out of her. The look of concern starts to cross her face, but she tries to fight it back.

After he shoots, both Rutter and Neva rush into the room to surround the woman. Despite their efforts, neither of them can get past her defenses of speed, armor, and magic.

Regardless of their inability to hit the woman, she drops her crossbow and calls out, "Whoa! Hold on! Don't play so rough...teehe... This is all just a game hehehe, can't we talk about this? C'mon guys, I surrender, geez already. Can't have a little fun?"

As she asks for mercy... in her own weird way, Felgar heartily hacks down the last of the zombies left in the room. Then he moves to catch up to the others and the woman.

She only winks at Vyshael, then lifts her eyebrows, before Raliscar says his piece and smacks her. He was close to missing, as she twitched to the side, but he managed to clock her in the jaw instead of the temple. She crumples unconscious, but there's just no telling how long she'll be out.

Manacles (regular manacles are DC 30 escape artist check -or- DC 26 strength check)
Also, bound = helpless.

Helpless:

A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent's mercy. A helpless target is treated as having a Dexterity of 0 (–5 modifier). Melee attacks against a helpless target get a +4 bonus (equivalent to attacking a prone target). Ranged attacks get no special bonus against helpless targets. Rogues can sneak attack helpless targets.

As the insane elf falls unconscious, Raliscar pulls back as if for another strike, but then seems to think better of it. Bending down, he retrieves his crossbow from the floor and loads another bolt into the quiver before slipping the weapon over his shoulder. Sword still in hand, he nods to Felgar, "Cousin, why don't yet see what ye can do to rustle up the town guard eh? We'll set to work makin' sure this crazy tart's zombies are all put down."

Looking then to the others, the dwarf brandishes his sword. "I can take a few more licks before things get too hairy. You lot want me up front? This batty elf has surely got more of these twisted souls holed up in this place."

"And when their sister seeks me out for our help, I'll tell them their family's dead because you as good as let their killer go when we had a chance to stop her!"

Raliscar waves one hand dismissively at Rutter after he's stormed off. Turning to the others, he grouses, "Bah. He'll thank me later. Or not. I've seen enough blood spilled fer a single day already. The lad's got a point about her though. She might be more than the guard can handle." At that, he pats her down, looking specifically for either a holy symbol of some kind or a pouch with spell components, which he'll quickly confiscate. He then seems to think further of his precautions and applies a gag to prevent her from speaking should she wake.

With the elf trussed and gagged, Raliscar then hands any spell-related items he might have found to Vyshael before hefting the slight elf over one shoulder and nodding after Rutter. "I'd rather keep both eyes on 'er 'til the guard get here at least."

Neva listened to the exchange between Rutter and Raliscar, conflicted. It could have been her hand raised against the prisoner, instead of the halfling's...she understood the emotion.

But thinking of all the dead, the blood, the desecration of the bodies, she had to..well, know. She had to know. Why this jester had done this. Why kill so many, why treat their bodies this way? How could somebody do such a thing? How could she be such a monster?

Neva was old enough to know that Rutter was likely right: the jester couldn't be rehabilitated, and she was likely too much for the authorities.

But I'm not so old that I don't believe that there's a reason she's like this. I can't believe she's this despicable without a purpose. Not yet. I'm not ready to give up yet.

As she turned to place a light on Rutter, she gave him a grim but gentle look. "I need something from her. I think its in her head, so before you bash it in, I need to check."

She sighed and decided to follow Rutter as he checked the rest of the house, so he wouldn't be alone.

We've yet to take a look in the basement or all of the 2nd floor still, right?

Edit: Derp. Just looked at the map. We've only been through about half this place so far! Dang.

"We've a good bit o' house left to search through, Rutter. An' I got a feelin' there'll be more o' them poor folk shamblin' about." Looking at the others, he then suggests, "How about we start with the basement an' work our way up? Sweep each floor then move on to th' next?"

Neva sagged as she realized Raliscar was right. There might be even more animated bodies in this place.

Clenching her teeth in renewed anger at the jester, she reloaded her crossbow, waited for Rutter to finish, made sure Felgar was set at the door with the prisoner, and followed the others down into the basement.

Let's leave Felgar on guard, and we'll head down together?

Vyshael nods, "She seemed more concerned about keeping us away from the stairs down than she was about us going up."

Sounds good to me, Neva.

Looking at all the bodies of the dead (or redead undead), the group realizes that none of them fit the description or appearance of the young Varisian musician that you guys came looking for in the first place. Most of the dead and costumed look like members of high society's lower tiers, or once were before someone killed and reanimated them.

Searching the ground floor, reveals only one last room you had left to open. It is nothing more than the pantry off the kitchen. Heading down into the basement, you see that a well-stocked wine rack and several large casks line the walls. A small wooden door squats in the southeastern corner, but it is locked.

Cellar is in the bottom right corner of the map.

"Looks like this is me." Rutter moves up front to the door. He puts his hand in his pack, but then wonders why that loon would've locked up a zombie. He knocks on the door.

"Anyone in here? We're with the guard. We've cleared the house. It's safe."

If there's no answer:
"Alright. I'm unlocking the door. If you have a weapon, don't do anything silly." Rutter pulls out his thieves' tools and goes to work. Take 20.

Raliscar stands a few steps back from Rutter, his heavy crossbow loaded and aimed at the locked door. "I get yer back, Rutter. Don't ye worry."

There is no answer from within, so Rutter proceeds to unlock the door himself. Inside is a small workshop, converted into a studio. Within, among the painting supplies, is a tawdry-looking divan, a small shrine to Shelyn, several scandalous portraits of an older woman of higher birth and a miserable-looking man. The man is older, maybe in his fifties, he is drawn all the way back into the far corner of the room. Pointed at you he has a dull paint knife, slightly shaking in his hand.

Neva craned her neck to look past Raliscar, Vyshael and Rutter.

"What is it? Is there anyone there?"

Raliscar lowers his crossbow as his dwarven eyes clearly make out the bedraggled man in the corner. He offers Neva a slow nod before calling out to the figure, "S'alright now, friend. We aren't here ta hurt you and, ta be frank, ye'd need somethin' a bit more robust than that little knife if yer meanin' ta hurt us. Are ye injured? We're here ta help, if we can."

Vyshael follows Raliscar into the room, a curious look on his face as Raliscar begins to make nice to ... someone. The sight of a shrine to Shelyn causes the elf to pause for a moment, lowering the blade from its guard position. Well now, that certainly doesn't look like an evil creator of undead...

Rutter puts away his weapon, and admires the paintings as he absentmindedly addresses the cowering man. "Did you hear me? We're with the guard. We knocked out that crazy woman and tied her up. Our strongest man is watching her now. It's safe. Honestly, I don't feel much like waking her up and talking to her, though. Can you tell us what happened here? Who's this lady in these paintings?" He squeezes against the wall to let Neva pass through.

Raliscar shoots Rutter a wounded look. "Strongest?! Bah! Ye must've taken a blow to th' head, Rutter, if'n yer thinkin' me cousin is at th' top o' th' pile."

Yes, scandalous as in nekkid, possibly to say the least. The kind of portrait that could cause a scandal.

Rutter can tell while talking to the man, and taking an eyeful of the paintings, that the subject of them is the lady of the house. The same one you fought on the second floor as an undead, who was dressed in the regalia of a Galtan queen. The man doesn't seem entirely trusting, "How... how do I know you... you aren't all trying to trick me? You could be... could be working with Her."

Rutter frowns as he recognizes the woman they'd seen undead before. The paintings aren't as much fun now. He turns from the portraits and looks at the man with a raised eyebrow, "Do we look like zombies to you? That seems to be that lady's style - not a lot of subtlety. Hey, what did you think it'd look like when someone finally came to save your ass? Would you prefer the Grey Maidens? Who knows what's inside those metal jigsaw puzzles they call armor! If you'd like, I'd be happy to take a bribe, if that'll convince you we're with the guard? 'Doubt the mistress of the house would like these paintings discovered, especially the one with the dog here,' that sort of thing?" He chuckles, "I'm just kidding. I don't care enough what y'all were up to before this party got crashed by that crazy lady. Did she come alone? See, I wouldn't have to ask that, if we were with her, would I? I'd have already known. Did she come in posed as a guest, or as someone of the staff?"

"Rutter, dear, it's too many questions too soon," she said gently and placed a hand on his shoulder.

Neva thought of all the times she'd dealt with nervous patients: scared young mothers, grandmothers with sick grandchildren, street toughs becoming fathers before they were really men. Her innate compassion welled up, despite everything she seen so far in this horrific house.

"We're not here to hurt anyone. We've been sent by a young woman to find her brother, a musician. We're here to help. Are you hurt?"

Neva used this last question to move over slowly with a gentle hand to look the painter over for wounds. She respected any aversion he expressed to her coming closer. If he allowed it, she would heal him.

"We'd be happy to get you out of here...back to your home, perhaps? Or to another place to stay? You must be exhausted."

He looks pensive, but allows the older woman to get close. The knife arm lowers somewhat, and he is obviously shaken. He looks himself over, "No, i'm not... not.. injured. This is... was?... my home. I don't know... how can I... what will I do now?" He's looking a little like he's trying to process, but is not quite warmed up to you enough to discuss the events that transpired.

"Hm! I'm sorry if I said anything disrespectful of your... wife? in these paintings. She looked to be a good woman. 'Specially in this one here." Rutter nods to a painting near the door, of the former mistress of the house in all her splendor, one the more tasteful poses adorning the walls. He then nods to Neva, and takes his leave of the discreet hideaway to wait at the bottom of the stairs.

The man's defiance leaves him and his whole body slumps in defeat. "I am Ausio Carowyn. I am... was?... the lord of this manor. We were greeting the Westerkiers when a stranger burst in, quite uninvited, dressed as something of a harlot-harlequin. She opened fire on my guests with her crossbow, laughing all the while in the most frightful, shrill way. They sickened and collapsed with shocking rapidity—whatever venom she coated those bolts with can only be blood veil! I had come down to the cellar here in hopes of escaping the madwoman's depredations.” As Rutter mentions his wife, his eyebrows lift with both hope and worry, "What of my wife, Olauren, please tell me that she is well? Is it even safe to leave?" He asks in response to Neva's question, "I don't know that I can handle to witness whatever happened above."

"Well, we've taken down that twisted jester, Ausio, but we've not yet been through th' rest o' yer estate yet. If ye'd like, ye can stay here, holed up an' safe, an' we'll sweep through the rest o' the place and try an' find yer wife. That sound good to you?"
