A Village Tale (Inactive)

Wizards and Knights may keep the country running smoothly, keep the dragons at bay, save the heir-apparent, and flush out those Giant Rat infestations; but what about the unsung heroes who toil daily to aid our greatest warriors, feed the largest cities, and run the loveliest little taverns, what of the Village Tale?

Hello,

Recently I've had this idea of a "heroic" campaign running through my head, people using their wits, charm, and brawn in order to hurl themselves onto the forefront of history in the making. Then the thought occurred "What if it were just simple people, trying to do something great and live their life?" You are naught but the common folk, just trying to get by in the crazy world we all live in. Do you help the plight of your fellow men, or do you ignore it all as life passes you by? Will your town ever grow in stature, or will you simply be left behind to wither in the dust and poverty?

Welcome to A Village Tale.

Recruitment will be open until Sunday May 4th, so just under a week, and I'm looking for around 4-5 players. All necessary character generation information is under the Campaign Info tab. This campaign is going to be less about combat and more about RP and clever use of skills. If you have any questions or concerns, or even requests of what you would like to see just post away and I'll help any way I can!

What exactly do you mean by "all Paizo approved races"? Core Races only or races from the ARG as well?

And so just Experts, Warriors and Adepts as classes?

I am interested and will make a character when I have more time.

I nearly have my characters stats all built, just rolling for gold:

gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (9, 3, 6, 4, 2) + 50 = 74

rolling for gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (10, 3, 5, 10, 2) + 50 = 80

Okay lets see what we can make.
Thinking a Half-orc Blacksmith lvl 3 Expert more later

Hmm...this campaign intrigues me and I would like to throw my hat into the ring. Let's see what I will be starting with.

Starting Wealth: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (6, 6, 10, 4, 4) + 50 = 80

Also, as we advance in level, will we continue to be restricted to NPC classes?

Submitting Ajax, the archetypical publican and "Jack of all trades". Because what is a newly forming town without someone to provide a cool beverage and a listening ear.

I've uploaded his stats, will fill out his fluff in a minute.

EDIT: It's NerdOfTheYear, btw. Hence the 74 starting gold + tools of the trade.

Dark Archive

5d10 + 50 ⇒ (10, 6, 7, 8, 1) + 50 = 82
Adria owns the Apothecary in town. She can be the party healer. I'm looking forward to combat lite...

I'm leaning towards a Human Warrior 1/Adept of Erastil 2 who functions as the towns blacksmith with his flying squirrel companion (Familiar).

Here is my submission. I took one set of artisian tool for free and bought the rest as well as another set of clothing. I will add more gear later.

Background:
Cadell was found at the door to the temple of Sarenrae in Rigald. He was raised in an orphanage run by the church. When he was twelve the church got him an apprenticeship with a blacksmith. His apprenticeship was hard. His master was a hard man but he was fair. He worked Cadell hard but he also taught him everything he could learn about blacksmithing. Cadell proved to be an apt pupil and his master kept teaching him. weapon smithing and crafting armor were learned in addition to basic blacksmithing. When Cadell finished his apprenticeship at 21 his master set him up in Bastrop. The young Half-orc provided the hamlet with the metal work they needed and paid part of his earnings to his master in Rigald. Cadell's master has promised him that when he has been a journeyman long enough he will sponsor him to be recognized as a master smith by the guild.

appearance and personality:

At 6'3" and weighing 269 lbs Cadell is an intimidating figure. His jet black hair a cold black eyes do nothing to change that image. The green skin and jutting canines don't help either. Cadell can be gruff and blunt to the point of rudeness. He gives people the respect they deserve based on observed merit. Hard work and integrity rate high on his list of desirable attributes. Cadell has a surprisingly good voice. He enjoys singing and will often sing to himself in his deep rumbling baritone when working in his forge. He stops immediately if anyone seems to notice.
Cadell usually wears sturdy leather boots, leather breeches, a linen shirt, leather vest and dark knee length coat. Unless he is in his forge in which case his is stripped to the waist and wears a thick leather apron.

I think i'm going with a pretty standard two-handed warrior. A former mercenary who settled down after suffering a terrible wound. Now he works as a sort of unofficial protecter of the townsfolk.

Gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 3, 9) + 50 = 67
reroll on the 1: 1d10 ⇒ 3
for a total of 70.

Any race from Core and the ARG, and yes just those classes

Joshua Hirtz wrote:

Yes, this campaign puts you in the place of the regular men and women in a little village, so we will be sticking to NPC classes.

I'm really enjoying the submissions so far and I'm glad to see so many excited by the idea.

Billy here.
This is Henry a former Merc-turned guardsmen who has spent the last two years living in and protecting bastrop.

Really great idea. Here's Mael, kind of the layabout son of a despairing farmer. But he's got a quick mind and plenty of charm to spare. He's good at making friends and playing his mandolin. I'd like to play him as a party face if I'm accepted and I'll try to get the rest of the stats done by tonight. He's human.

gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (7, 6, 4, 6, 10) + 50 = 83

Pathfinder Pathfinder Accessories, PF Special Edition Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Alright, that answers my initial questions. I might try and rethink what kind of profession to give my character considering we already have someone with a character sheet built for blacksmithing.

I will submit a LN Human Warrior 1/Expert 2 named Maxis.

The guy's the latest recruit into the town guard, hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father who died in the goblin wars and left his mother and five children (not including himself) without a man of the house. As a result, he's had to make ends meet for most of his family, but now that he is of age to join the militia, he hopes that a steady income with (hopefully) a calm job experience can put food on the table for his family.

Note: I will go ahead and make a formal alias for this character.

Starting Gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (7, 1, 8, 7, 2) + 50 = 75

Rerolling for the 1: 1d10 ⇒ 3

7 + 3 + 8 + 7 + 2 + 50 = 77 GP

@GM_Fenwick - I don't know if we will both be selected but I think Maxis and Henry might get along well. Perhaps working as partners in the town guard?

Hmm...I feel like I keep coming up with ideas that will step on someone's toes if I continue forward with them so I'm going to keep away from those and put out an idea that I've not seen come up yet.

I'm looking at making a sage like character. Someone that people come to when they have a question. Does this sound like it would be a helpful character in this kind of situation?

I'm definitely interested, and will be recycling this alias from a game that never took off.

Am I correct to assume that our characters would have their homes/places of work? For example, would a blacksmith have his forge, and a librarian her library?

My apologies for the double post. The thread essentially exploded when I tried to edit my last post.

Gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (6, 8, 10, 10, 10) + 50 = 94 Lucky! I'll be able to afford that heirloom longbow from my backstory.

So, here's my character, Azalea Bramson, Elven Librarian. I have the background up, will be putting up her crunch sometime tomorrow.

Would it be possible to get some clarification on what goes into our gold, vs. what goes into "tools of your trade"? Am I correct to assume that, for example in the case of my character, the library building and its books and supplies, are the tools of my trade, while Azalea's personal posessions are taken from the gold above?

What of living quarters within one's workplace? Are those to be part of the initial gold amount, or part of the background?

Azalea Bramson wrote:

For my merchant/pub owner/innowner/stablekeeper/so-on-and-so-forth, I'm hoping/assuming that I own a plot of land, but have purchased all my pub supplies and merchant items using my gold. It was a tonne of fun purchasing a stack of items that each cost a few copper and silver pieces.

That being said, my character is new town and just establishing himself recently. I'm think a touch of Al Swearengen from Deadwood.

I have my character almost done and will post his fluff later

Background:

John was born the second son in a family of farmers. As a child, he received a mandolin as a gift from his parents that they bought from a passing salesman. This gift changed his path in life dramatically.

Instead of helping around the farm, John spent most of his time either learning to play or at the taverns of local towns, acting out stories he had heard from adventurers. His parents, thinking him a lazy bum, told him he should move on to a larger town where he could learn more.

John lucked out and joined a performance troupe that was visiting near by. With them, he learned various skills, not only becoming better as an actor and musician, but also learning some acrobatics and juggling, which he enjoyed most.

Unfortunately, his group members started having some artistic differences and decided to break up. Without a home or a real job, John found himself stranded near the town of Bastrop, where he ended up settling for a while.

Most of his time in Bastrop has been spent doing odd jobs such as babysitting and housekeeping or otherwise entertaining the locals at the end of their days. Both to get away from some of the more tedious jobs and to not appear completely useless, John agreed to help Samuel with his newly formed town watch.

Sorry for my delay in replying, I hadn't been able to access the thread for most the day due to some error, although I'm not sure if everyone else had that same problem.

Tools of your trade is any item that you would personally have/own that is a staple requirement of your job. For a Blacksmith it's tools and work clothes, for a Librarian maybe they own a few rare books. It was assumed that you have a place to live (for some this most likely will double as your place of business) and living necessities.

The gold I will be giving you in game and in character creation will represent your "disposable" income. I didn't really want to turn this whole game into a giant bookkeeping problem with budgeting your characters/families day-to-day living and rent, so I was just going to assume you already "pay" for that. That being said, necessary living items are only available to you within Bastrop so any traveling fees will come from your GP. If you all would rathrer bookkeep we can do that as well, but I thought it might just be a hassle and it'd be easier to just say "This 150 gp is assumed as your Net reward" rather than "Here's your 150 gp, now did you pay your rent this week?"

Joshua Hirtz wrote:

I see no problem with this, as long as he doesn't just simply answer a question and return to sitting in meditation.

Liberty's Edge

I'm working on a character-- I'll have him up within a day or so!

"Evening there, folks! The name's Arakar Vino, I'm a vintner...that's a fella what makes wines and so on, ya see? The wife and I have been at it now for a few years. Pleasure to be meetin' ya!"

I'd love to join with this character. Arakar is a dodgy, paranoid man in his early thirties, with thin black hair and brown eyes. He's a kind fellow at his core and sincerely loves his neighbors as though they were his own kin.

starting gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (7, 7, 5, 4, 6) + 50 = 79

thinking a guard (warrior) or some skilled worker.

Aaaah. I see. Sounds good, then. Will have the rest of the application up later today. As for the thread being innaccessible, check the discussion thread for what happened. A few of us took refuge there when the thread was down.

Dark Archive

Crap! I just saw your link from the original thread. Lots of interest here, but that's okay. No one has stepped on my imagination's toes.

I am going to make a prospector. He'll be a human who has come looking for gold in them thar' hills! The mountain has called to him and he is hoping to prove that there is iron to be mined.

I'll begin working on the stats now and get this up a.s.a.p.

So I can have all three sets of Artisian tools for my character for free?

I was assuming that he would have a place to work and live. A small forge and cottage with a garden for vegetables in back.

Frogtop is now done.
Also is this in Gorlon or is it a homebrew campaign setting?

Huh, had loads of fun with coming up with Mael. Was refreshing to just build a guy and not worry much about combat optimization. Level 3 expert is still pretty exceptional though.

Might have went a bit overboard with the background. It's from the perspective of Mael's father talking to the village mayor about him. Explains his lack of gear and how he has the gold he has. Fits well with his traits to boot. Used a Golarian diety for simplicity's sake. Even if I don't get picked I'd like to get some feedback on the background :)

Background

Spoiler:

“Yer asking me about Mael? That lazy good for nothing laybout son o’ mine? If I had a copper piece for everytime that boy skipped out on the farm and his chores I’d be a rich enough man to retire to a castle and no joke. He’s been that way ever since he was born. His Ma dotes on him ye know with his yellow curls and whatnot. But I swear I didn’t know what to do with him.

“He’s always been that way ye know. Ever since he was born he’s been getting into mischief, and getting other kids into trouble to boot!. Everytime something went wrong in Barstock it was always Mael in the thick of it. And dragging the other kids into it too. His Ma protests but I know he was always the ringleader. That boy could convince a mule to break into your house to scrawl dirty limericks in the main room with ‘im.... sorry about that again by the way. Lord knows I didn’t treat him any differently than his two brothers. I gave them all the same hidings whenever they got caught but they were properly chastened while Mael always shrugged it off with a grin and a joke.

“I understand how he always got young Ned to follow him on his schemin’ but how he managed to convince Lem to join ‘im I will never understand. He’s five years older than Mael by Erastil’s sake! Thank Ol’ Deadeye for those two though. Lem and Ned are hard workers and they’ve helped me turn this little farm into a bountiful place and the crops and the animals well taken care of. Hard and honest work and they’re dedicated to it. They certainly take after my side of the family. I don’t know WHO Mael takes after. His Ma talks sometimes of her maternal grandda who was something of a rogue. I guess that’s as good a guess as any. I tell you he drives me up the wall.

“He just never focused on the work! He played with the chickens rather than take care of them and any patch he was set to hoe looked like it had never even been touched by the hands of man going back to the time o’ creation. Bah. Finally I sent him off with his mother to the city for the market festival seven years ago or so to get him out of my hair. Funny thing though, they came back in less than half a day with the entire stock sold for far more than what I was expecting. It was the best of our produce sure but them city folks are misers! His Ma said that he danced a funny jig and sang out loud to attract the customers and then convinced them to buy it up for MORE than the other stalls. Damndest thing. He always had the voice of an angel and he’s entertained us many a night with his songs. Drives his Ma to tears, in a good way, mind. I’d lie if I said I hadn’t felt my eyes wet on occasion myself. Just never knew he could use it to sell turnips!

“I don’t know if that was a good thing though. Once he got a taste of the city life he started sneaking off there every chance he got. Hitching rides with the trade caravans no doubt to and fro. He could convince a goose to give him a ride to the moon I tell you. That’s where he got the damn mandolin. The racket he made with that thing when he shoulda been tending the chickens was infernal for months. I threatened to take it from him and break it about me knees but he always laughed and got away and hid the thing where I could never find it. But then… he got good. Plays the thing better than anyone else in the village. Still, no excuse for not helping out on the farm.

“About three years ago though our old mule finally died. Mael is the one who named him back when he was just an imp of a child. I never named him anything but he called him “Tool” Tool the Mule. And yeah it was a good name. We relied on 'im and were devastated. It hadn’t been a good harvest and we didn’t have nearly enough to afford a new one. Mael disappears for a good three months. I raged at him for abandoning us at our time of greatest need while his Ma wept over him and worried about how he’d do running away. But lo and behold at the end of the third month there he is walking back from the city with a brand new mule, young and strong, and a COW to boot. He musta heard me talking about us needing a cow and there he is walking back with one. I threatened to make him tell us where he stole them from but he just laughed and said he played his mandolin and sang for them until they showed up and then he brought them home. I went and talked to the caravan master that he travelled back with and got the true story though. Apparently he’d fallen in with some band of well regarded minstrels in the city and he helped them out and got a bit of their earnings. He’d saved and saved and then bought them and brought them home to us. I tell you straight I was so moved that I hid in the outhouse and bawled me eyes out. It wasn’t that he’d done it for us, he always had a good heart I could tell. It was that he had made something of himself. It’s not honest work, but he’s got something that he can do to earn himself a living. Made me prouder of him than I had ever been. The mule he calls Mael the 2nd of his name and the cow he named 'Milk' cuz I keep telling him to milk the cow and he keeps saying. "Yes Da, we know that's her name" Drives me barmy.

"I'm sure you already know what he did for Lem's wedding. He got all his entertainer friends from the city to come in and put on a show. People will be talking about in Barstop till the end of days I tell you. Lem and his ma were so happy and his new bride was blushing like a tomato.

“Two days ago the blasted, lovely child came to me grinning and said he’s saved up enough money for us to retire to a nice small house in the city and not have to worry about anything ever. I started at him and the large bag of gold he plopped down on the table. More money in one place than I had ever seen. Saving up for the mule and the cow had convinced him he could do even more. We knew he'd been spending more and more time in the city but we just figured that he was just lazing about in the city earning just enough to get drunk and whatnot. He'd been saving every coin! Well I sat him down and told him we couldn't accept it. That it was his money and that we didn't need it. He started getting angry! Never seen 'im get angry before! Said he just wanted us to spend our old age in comfort. Well I managed to explain that we were simple folk that wouldn't feel comfortable in the city, the farm is where his Ma and I want to end our days and anyways when you stop workin', you start dyin' and that I was very proud of him and that I loved him. That calmed him down.

"Come to think of it I think that's the first time I ever told him those two things. Huh. Anyways I expect that he'll move on and live full time in the city now. He's done more than enough for us in his own way and the farm is running fine with Ned and Lem. As long as he vists his Ma and sings for us now and then we'll be more than happy.

"Well that's everything. Was there anything else you wanted to know Samuel?"

The character I was looking to create would be an adept of Erastil that will find himself constantly busy within the community as he works to improve it. He will have no trouble doing this considering he will quite literally a jack of all trades capable of using any skill in the book with a fair bonus.

Edit: I envision his familiar helping him in whatever task he has set out to do that day. With this in mind, would it be alright for me to give his familiar the Valet archetype?

Nah, Mael, you were here first. I just didn't realize how alike our concepts are when I posted. Perhaps I should work on a secondary.

I had trouble accessing the thread yesterday as well. Here's my submission sans finishing equipment, and traits.

Fritz's family spent some time in the area of Bastrop when he was just a child, before his father being given a commission nearer to Rigald as a forester. Fritz being the youngest of four sons was sent to the church for training as an acolyte, but after a few years it was obvious that he was better served as a lay preacher, rather than a full Cleric...so he returned home.

When word came that the area he spent his childhood in was growing, he saw this as a chance to help out in what small ways he could, and maybe provide some spiritual guidance. As a outsider (Sort of) with no real friends, he has become best buddies with a young armadillo, that he nursed back to health.

Since that time he has attempted some organized rituals...not so successful..., and become somewhat of a healer for the area...more successful. When the call came for town watch, the young man jumped at the chance.

I'm assuming the Greyson farm is a part of the community, is that correct?

Was Samuel Greyson one of the original settlers of Bastrop?

Hm. Question:

Max HP at level 1, average +1 at subsequent levels.

Do you round the average up or down?

On an Expert's d8, is average +1 5 or 6?

Also, are there any particular regional languages in or near the area Bastrop is in?

EDIT: Most of my crunch is up. I'll just need to detail her possessions and her home.

This is the alias for my (Joshua Hirtz's) submission.

It's still a bit of a rough draft at this point in time, but here is what I have for my submission so far.

I'm not sure who's toes I'd be stepping on with my concept for Arakar, but he's essentially an older man, retired from a moderately traumatizing and short lived adventuring life apprenticed under a Witch-hunter. He got his fill of exotic people, places, and danger and has since taken up his (long since passed)father's occupation of small scale fruit farming and wine-making.

I've decided his personality is a bit more dour than my first post.

Carl Franz
-Son of a son of a guard. full time town guard and peace keeper. fairly happy man, hard to anger, but is quite scary when angered. Sees himself as a semi town leader. Likes a good drink but always keeps an eye out. helps with building and other things when he has nothing better to do (most of the time) He keeps watch with his father.

Dot...I was thinking of making a bar owner but that is taken.

I have yet to see a locksmith, is it free or did I just miss it by chance?

Inspiration struck today, will be adding a little to Azalea's background: In addition to librarian, she'll be a schoolmarm. Every little village needs one of those.

Here is drayen's submission. I am writing the background now, but I wanted to post the character and roll for starting gold.

Starting Gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (8, 7, 9, 7, 7) + 50 = 88

Woot! I can afford that mule I've been eyeing.

gold: 5d10 + 50 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 3, 7) + 50 = 70

Here we go, application complete. Looking forward to seeing who is picked.

Please let me know if there's an issue with it.

Dark Archive

I'd like to withdrawl. I'm running murders mark for some friends. See ya'll.

I've taken the liberty of compiling the applicants for our DM's benefit. For the sake of simplicity, I've only listed characters with completed backgrounds or character profiles, sorted by professions and disciplines. If I've forgotten someone, by all means, please speak up.

Guards:

Henry Orisson, Guardsman
Maxis Harrison, Guardsman

Craftspeople:

Cadell Grimm, Blacksmith
Fragtop Dragfire, Alchemist
Geoffrey, Handyman

With Adria's departure, I am amused to note that I seem to be the sole female character around. :P

posted as Gilthanis above, background done, Just need to make GP purchases/skill, but I assume I would have he locksmith shop, MWK artisan tools, and a basic set of thieves tool to assist in unlocking troublesome locks for people.

Please let me know if I have missed anything, or overstepped my bounds on anything :)
