A Tyrant in Pieces (Inactive)

Game Master leinathan

Nearly six hundred years ago, the draconic tyrant Kazavon was defeated, and the seven indestructible relics of his body spirited across the multiverse so he might never return. Today, whisperings and rumours of his artifacts are abound, and fears that the great warlord Kazavon may return are on the tip of everybody's tongue. Will a group of intrepid heroes stop it, or will the world labor under the chained fist of Zon-Kuthon once again?

Unafe gets a look of panic on her face as folks seem to consider leaving the paladin behind.

She nods fervently at Nicholas's suggestion.

Pointing at him, she says, "That man is Good, and he may well hold the key to what we seek. If we leave, it should only be with him, or after our foes have been abated."

Calling out to him, Unafe says, "Warrior-for-Good, we have the bag of Fangs. The pirates have agreed to retreat together. Would you join us?"

He calls back, "I'm afraid of what might happen if I leave this man unattended - he is too powerful for an ordinary man to take on. If I see the opportunity, I'm glad to get off of these shores for a moment, however."

"The holiness in Bralani's blows are able to silence these kytons forever though, as can Salla's silver arrows.

"I..." Visions flash into her mind of being ordered to flee by her master, of abandoning her village and possibly the Blade itself to these pain-worshippers. Shaking her head violently and with tears welling up, Unafe says, "I won't run today. Not if we have a chance of stopping these villains and saving that man.

"We must believe! Our ancestors will not forsake us in our righteous cause."

Salla, I know you can't see the map right now. I don't think you have line of sight to the Nobleman, sadly. Should we assume you shot at one of the kytons, since you do have LOS to them? One's pretty injured already and both it and another are closing on Cai'nan.

Nicholas falls back towards the pirates' ship alongside the gnomish pirate captain, who raises her holy symbol of Nivi Rhombodazzle when she draws near to the kyton standing in their way (however incapacitated by Nicholas' magic it might be) and lets loose a multicolored shard of congealed energy at it. Meanwhile, her bralani, still in wind form, swings an immaterial arm at it.

The critically-wounded pirate manages to get up onto the pirate ship, gasping with pain and exertion, though he and Seraphin begin to set the sails and such to get the ship ready to leave.

The two remaining functioning kytons unleash their chains upon Cai'nan, while behind him, Salla launches a silver bolt into the kyton below them, ending its tortured life forever.

Salla, perhaps it might be better, for as long as you have such bad connection issues, for you to give me a list of priorities so that I can roll for you.

Since I want to see leinathan have to roll and strikethrough even *more* dice...

Unafe continues her chant which seems to reverberate in the air, while twisting her knife toward the Kyton who just hit Cai'nan in the hopes of severing it from the threads of fortune.

Meanwhile she continues to inch toward the conflict between the paladin and the aristocrat.

As she does she groans a bit in pain, and new cuts appear spontaneously both on her and on Tuturutanga, just as they fade on Cai'nan.

Move: Chant to extend
Free: 5' step as shown
Free: Life link heals Cai'nan 5. Note, that this should've happened in my last round as well. By my reconning, that makes Cai'nan's HP 75/78.

Leinathan, I think--if the campaign tab is up to date--that I might be missing 2 HP that was done to Cai'nan some other time. Or did he start this encounter down 2? "Fool girl," Ciervo mutters, displeased with Unafe's decision to stay and fight. Their means of escape was secured, yet she'd rather stay behind and play the hero. Given the circumstances, leaving her behind was not an option; the former assassin does not even entertain the notion. He glances once in the aristocrat's general direction before looking back to the approaching kytons. They were the least of his worries. "Fine. But we had better make this quick."

Without another word he darts forward to lend Cai'nan his aid, dagger pointed at the kyton.

Ciervo charges in, taking a slice from the kyton he aims for along the way, but plunging his dagger into the still-regenerating creature as he does so. It staggers back, nearly incapacitated from all of its wounds.

Seraphin continues to make the ship ready for everyone to get on alongside the very-wounded gnome pirate, having given up on her fire spells for the moment.

The aristocrat continues to heal from his wounds, and he also casts another spell on himself. He floats a few inches off of the ground as he finishes casting, and you can see a wicked grin through the transparent force sphere that he conjured to protect himself.

Cai'nan easily fells the first of two kytons with one of his two strikes, turning to the other and slashing along its front. It hisses intimidatingly at Cai'nan, its chains beginning to whip around menacingly.

Nicholas Spell Penetration: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Kyton Fort Save (DC 17): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Nicholas fires a black, necromantic ray of strength-sapping from his hand at the remaining kyton in combat with Ciervo. He strikes it, and its strength saps away, but the creature is tough and manages to resist the worst effects of the ray.

Salla rolls out the window of the building she's inside of, shuffling over until she has a good view of both the nobleman and the kyton. Realizing that the nobleman is protected by a shield of force, she turns and fires at the kyton. Her bolt sinks into it, and it shrieks with pain.

Salla grazes the last kyton with 14 damage.

The remaining gnomish pirates scramble onto the ship, joining their wounded companion, while their captain impatiently waits at the end of the deck. "The ship will be ready to go soon, strange new friends! I thought you said that we were getting out of here?" While she talks to the party, she and the bralani azata each cure themselves of wounds -

Unafe drops her chanting as the one Kyton whose luck she was disrupting falls. She replies to the pirate captain, "I think we'll have a happier voyage if we take care of these pain-worshippers first.

"Captain, your Bralani has the ability to stop these kytons from regenerating. Can you ask his to help us defeat the last one, and then to put the others to a permanent rest?

"Heck, for that matter, can you summon anything else to help deal with this troublesome aristocratic mage? I'd assume you'd rather have him dead than pursuing you for--in his mind--double crossing him!"

Pausing to let the captain reply, Unafe turns to the paladin. "Speaking of lending a hand, I have the ability to toughen your skin as a protective measure, or to heal you while you battle this pain-worshipper. Do you have a preference?"

Ciervo dances through the chains as they come flying at him, retaliating with a trio of lightning-quick stabs. Without an opening however, he finds it too difficult to aim at any major weak points in the kyton's defenses. And even when one of his knives does hit its mark, the wound is a shallow one - Ciervo knew full well that it would heal over completely within seconds.

Gritting his teeth as he tries to maintain his cool, he then takes a step away from the kyton, leaving more room for Cai'nan to do his work. Under these circumstances, brute force was likely to be more effective than finesse.

"Protection is always good," says the paladin warily, nodding as he does so and allowing Unafe to touch him and bless him with barkskin. They watch the nobleman warily, but don't have the speed to rush forward as he dispels his sphere of force. The nobleman kicks off from the ground, flying upwards about twenty feet, and backwards as well. He grins a sadistic grin and says, "You should not have come to help, pathetic heroes," before waving a hand and unleashing a massive fireball which engulfs Nicholas, Salla, Unafe, and the paladin.

The paladin grabs Unafe and the pair duck underneath the worst of the effects, while both Salla and Nicholas are terribly burned by the effects.

Meanwhile, Ciervo and Cai'nan take on the last upright kyton - though Ciervo unleashes a barrage of dagger strikes, only one connects and only shallowly.

The aristocrat deals 30 damage to Salla and Nicholas, and 15 damage to the paladin and Unafe. Unafe is wounded, Salla is grazed, Nicholas is wounded. Seraphin deals 45 damage to the nobleman, which wounds him. Ciervo deals 4 damage to the last kyton.

"All evil must meet its end on my blade, especially followers of the Midnight Lord," he says.

Nicholas wisely takes a step back from the possibly deranged paladin. "I see." He looks back at the rest of his group. "Perhaps we should leave them to settle their dispute and leave while we have the chance."

Salla ignores the discussion and her burns and returns to trying to harm the Nobleman.

Salla gets +1 to hit and -1 to damage due to miscalculation.

Salla Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Salla aims carefully this time - she'd fired countless bolts at this nobleman by now, and had learned his dodging techniques. Not only that, but he was in the air and wasn't expecting such an attack.

Salla shoots him right in the neck. Somehow, he survives, but it is a brutal shot.

Salla crits, and deals 40 damage to the nobleman!

While the gnomish pirates continue to ready the ship, and the bralani azata enters combat with the remaining kyton, the pirate captain approaches Nicholas. She tries to grab him by the arm and drag him along, saying, "You heard yourself and your suicidal friend. Come with or we're taking the Fangs and leaving without you."

Bralani Scimitar vs. Kyton: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (6, 5) + 16 = 27

The bralani maneuvers between two buildings, moving fast as wind, and appears on the other side of the kyton. With a holy choir and a swiftly-moving sword slice, it ends the life of the final kyton.

"Nice shooting, Salla! Shoot him out of the sky!"

Hoping to make a suggestion that will be understood by the gnome captain and the outsider, but not the flying aristocrat. "Bralani-dostu, onu yer üzündə həll edərdiniz?

"Kapitan, səni etiraf etməliyəm, sənin və ekipajın səni və Fang'ları təqib etdiyindən daha acınacaqlı adamla öldü. Daha müttəfiqləri çağırırmı? Yoxsa bu insanı bütün çətinliklərdən qurtarmağa kömək etmək üçün sehrinizi istifadə edin?"

Meanwhile, Unafe moves a bit away from the flying aristocrat and calls on the ancestors who are never far from her to ease her wounds, and those of the ones around her.

Channel: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2) = 11

Channel to heal all within 20'. Just in case, excluding the 3 nearby kytons (and the aristocrat, if he's within 20') from the effect.
- Tuturutanga heals 1 (fast heal) +11 to 17, and she crawls into Unafe's familiar pouch for protection.
- Unafe heals 11+6(fey foundling) to 46.
- Paladin, Captain, our whole party...and any of the fallen pirates who aren't dead yet heal 11.

Sylvan:
"Bralani-friend, would you tackle him to earth?

"Captain, you must admit you and your crew will be safer with that pain-worshipper dead than pursuing you and the Fangs. Can you summon any more allies? Or otherwise use your magic to help put this man out of all of our misery?"

"Ugh, no, I don't have any more law-crushing spells or summon spells available today." responds the pirate captain.

She frowns, then looks up at him. "I've got it," she says, before summoning up some antimagic to assail his fly spell.

Pirate Captain Dispel: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Unfortunately, her attempt fails.

Unafe's burst of healing energy revitalizes three of the pirates and restores life and energy to her party.

As the last kyton is felled, Ciervo looks at the aristocrat and sneers. There was little he could do to harm him, and he had no desire to be caught by one of his explosive spells. Besides the paladin, only Salla seemed able to inflict any lasting damage. And of course, there was still the matter of the Fang he had hidden in his bag.

"Do what you must, Unafe, but we need you alive," Ciervo says, before breaking away and making a run for the docks.

Had to think about it for a bit, and... it really seems like this battle is over.

The aristocrat rolls his eyes, scoffs, spits, curses, and flies away - getting well out of range of any of the nearby light sources immediately. He doesn't immediately come back, and flies much too quickly to catch up to.

That done, the paladin you fight with shouts after the escaping aristocrat for a few moments before calming down, while the pirate captain smirks with satisfaction and bids the rest of the party board her boat, picking up the three pirates who Unafe revived and helping them on.

The paladin is obviously exhausted, but follows along with the party, wordless for a moment. With visible difficulty, he sheaths his sword. As he does so, he begins to physically change - his noble and knightly exterior fades, as does the brightening effect of the holy magic he had used on himself. In just a few minutes, the visage of the ranger you had met earlier in town, the one calling himself Greg, is visible. The golden vein-lines disappear.

Everyone hops on the pirates' ship, at the captain's urging, and a few of the gnomes push the ship out into the surf. Despite the fact that it is just after midnight, the ship is soon sailing out into the Bay, technically safe from whatever threats terrestrial Nidal has to offer.

Apologies for the late post, but the Nidalese aristocrat runs away! He didn't want to chance getting poof'd by another fireball.

Good job retrieving the Crown of Fangs - the Book Club will pay the pirate captain for giving it over, and the pirate captain will sail out of Nidal, taking you to a Book Club base.

What I'm planning next is that you guys get sent out after the Bound Blade following a vision that Unafe has, but feel free to RP some.

Also, go ahead and level up.

"I should have guessed," Nicholas mutters as the paladin reverts to the suspicious ranger they had met earlier. "I thought you were just covering for the paladin we were looking for. Well, do you believe that we're on your side now? Or do we need to assault the Umbral Court too?" He hurries onto the boat. The sooner they can get our of Nidal, the better. The Scions are already driven from the city and it's likely that he's already been fingered as a heretic or a traitor. Quite likely both. Anywhere other than Nidal would be great right now.

The man, Greg, collapses into a comfortable spot on the pirates' ship. "Oh no," he says with a sigh, "You're good, you're good. Thanks for the backup."

"Sorry about the double-talk. Technically, I am covering for the paladin you're looking for - my name's not Grey, and I'm not the object of that legend." He pats the sword. "I might as well be, though. For an hour or so."

One of Nicholas's eyebrows pops up. "Please tell me that Grey isn't stuck inside the sword."

The man shrugs. He pulls the sheath off of his back and lays it across his knees - the sheath is plain, but the hilt of the sword is both jeweled and golden, and the guard takes the shape of the sunburst on Iomedae's holy symbol.

"This sword has a will of its own. Dedicated to the destruction of the Midnight Lord, it will help you become the hero that it needs you to be if... if a more worthy host is not available."

Cai'nan turns the corner of the building and sees the group headed for the ship. He lets out a sigh of relief as he hurries aboard. "Thsnks, Captain!" he says jovially as he hops aboard.

As the ship pulls out of the dock and further into the harbor, Cai'nan relaxes a bit. "Be a good horse, Midnight. I hope you can get loose from where we tied you up..." the idea of the horse starving or being helpless against predators was disturbing, but in the end, there was really no other play.

He listens passively to the ranger and Nicholas talk, and eventually begins removing his armor to relax in the ocean breeze. It had been a while since he had enjoyed any time on the open water. Not since...home.
__________

As the group sails the open water, Cai'nan offers to help as best he can. While at first he has a hard time with some of the terminology and things, he proves to be a quick learner, and is soon climbing the rigging of the boat and pitching in like a true boat-hand.

In return, he offers to spar and train with any of those on board that so desires it. As he grows more comfortable with those he is surrounded by, it becomes clear that Cai'nan is a light-hearted, pleasant fellow. But he seems a bit tight lipped about discussing his past...

The gnomish pirates - interplanar adventurers dedicated to the worship of their racial diety, Nivi Rhombodazzle - take to Cai'nan very well and readily accept his help sailing the ship as it makes its way out of Conquerer's Bay and north towards Varisia. Sending and animal ambassador spells between Gallanda, the Book Club order's leader, and the agents on the ship put them at ease when they learn they're going to get paid after all.

They explain how they got the Fangs in the first place. They had gotten a tip-off about a particular efreeti prince possessing them, and had traveled to the Plane of Fire (under the direction of Seraphin, the ifrit mercenary) to steal it. After they stole it, though, the efreeti would not stop chasing after them, and it got more vicious and angry the longer it went, eventually bringing hordes of ghouls against them.

All Greg has to say about Nicholas' comment is to nod, and he places the sword back on his back. "Nidal is a bad place," he says, "And I must return there when we are through."

Earlier

Unafe feels relief as the aristocratic mage flies off...tinged with hesitation, as she feels sure the Umbral Court won't rest easy with the Fangs in someone else's possession.

And surely that man will remember us. I wonder how long until we meet him again...?

As he flees, she casts her eye to his carriage. "Wait one more minute, before we go, I wonder if we'll find any clues to who he was and who he's working with in here."

Together with anyone who's interested, she gives a quick survey of the carriage, looking for clues and for anything magical, and then finally accedes to board the pirate ship.

On board

Once on the ship Unafe collapses onto a bench. Suddenly she seems much less the bold and self-assured tribal shaman, and more an exhausted, skinny, out-of-place teenage girl in far over her head.

When the priestess of Nivi Rhombodazzle mentions hearing a tip as to the location of the Fangs, Unafe perks up. "Wait, do you mean the Umbral Court got a tip to it's location and sent you? Or you found their location when it was unknown to those pain-worshippers?"
