As soon as she drops the flower and runs, the man turns and vanishes in the woods behind the farmhouse again.

Listen 1d100 ⇒ 68 under 50 is a success.
At hearing two screams, Hank grabbed his trusty Louisville Slugger and made for the stairs, jumping down them two at a time, making for the door. He flings it open and quickly spies Abagail, looking shaken. "Are you alright? What's happened? Did you hear the scream?"
Abigail Crow |
Latching onto Howards arm for support, Abi replies in a breathless voice "There was a man, he ran at me out of the woods, then when I jumped back he ran away! He went that way... " she replies, pointing toward where the man ran back into the woods.
Visibly shaking off her fear, now that there are others around, she steps away from the wall and peers into the treeline where the raggedy man ran into... Not getting to close to the treeline though.

You have two cars and the truck you came in.
No phone.
Abigail thinks of it. She is not sure she can recognize him.
Abigail Crow |
Still gathering her wits about her Abi shakes her head "I...I don't know if I would or not, it happened so fast. N..No, he didn't hurt me, just startled me, I had come out and was walking back to the farmhouse when I stopped to admire the little garden, I reached down to pluck a flower when he ran out and yelled." she says, holding up the small flower that she had plucked.
Corsario |
Nothing happens. Whoever he was, he is not taking the bait.
Somehow, after taking the second flower, Abigail feels somewhat guilty. The flower patch is very beautiful, and very well tended.
Corsario |
He has left for the night. You will see him the next morning. And he is a driver/guide, not a gardener/caretaker, so it's not really his responsibility.
Abigail Crow |
Watching the tree line, Abi finally gives up on looking for her spook and heads insight, still visibly shaken. "Perhaps we should just head back inside, there is no sense standing out here in the dark I guess..."
Putting action to words, she goes back into the samll farmhouse, lighting any candles she finds inside.

In the middle of the night you hear a piercing scream. You get up and realize it was Howard, sweating, confused, and frightened in his bedroll.
Abigail Crow |
Sitting bolt upright Abi immediately looks out the window, sure that her attacker from earlier has come screaming back to the farmhouse. Its only after a few frantic moments that she realizes that the sound came from downstairs, not outside, with a bit of panic she lights a candle and works her way downstairs in time to hear Howard's apology. "Are you okay Howard? I think after all of the excitement this evening everyone is a little on edge... I know I have been all night" she says, as she finishes coming down the stairs.

Following breakfast, Blaine organizes the students into two parties: those conducting the soil survey, and those interviewing the locals. The day is already starting to feel hot and sticky — and will only get worse.
Once the truck driver (good old Joe Harlow) arrives, Blaine gives each group a survey map indicating the areas he wants canvassed. Blaine intends to spend each day with a different group; today he will join the folklorists.
Something your characters want to do before leaving for work?
Corsario |
As an accountant Hank is better suited to interview the locals (maybe focusing in how they manage their house economy) than doing field work in the mountains.
If going to town... really? With a bat? Don't you want to carry pliers, some guns, maybe a butcher's knife? :P
Abigail Crow |
Getting what sleep she can after the nights excitement Abi comes down the stairs ready to get out and explore. Her little notebook in hand, as well as a small compass in her pocket she sets about doing her morning duties to get cleaned up and ready to move out. Going through the supplies provided she checks for the basics. walking out to the little outhouse she is cautious to go while there are others out there, her scare yesterday affecting her more than she'd like to admit.
I'm assuming we have basic geology tools... small hand pick for breaking off samples, little boxes or jars for collection etc etc
Corsario |
I assume the crews have some bags that they lug the equipment in. If so, he will stash it in there. If there are no such bags available, then he will leave it at the farm.
Good idea, that will do. You stash your bat with the rest of the equipment. You have a sound recorder, a camera, an a lot of notebooks.
Corsario |
When Hank leaves the main farmhouse to use the outhouse, he is in for a sinister sight. As he heads towards the outhouse, he notices a skinny brown hare nibbling on weeds in a small clearing to the west. A few seconds after seeing the hare, a strange thing happens. What looks to be a large rat appears behind the unsuspecting animal, but oddly enough, this rat walks on its hind legs and appears to be holding a dagger in its paw!
Other oddities become quickly apparent, like the rat’s huge, bulbous obsidian eyes, and the twisting tentacles dangling from its snout.
Corsario |
In a second the hare darts away and the big "rat thing", unhappy its prey has escaped, turns to face Hank and waves its paws crossly before darting off through the tall grass towards the Sugar Maple forest.
Corsario |
Does he tells somebody?
Does he has any preferences for straight-jacket color? ;)
Hank Macon |
Once Hank gets back inside, he does mention what he saw in a round about way. "Anyone seen anything strange out back? Theyve got huge strange rats out here. And has anyone ever seen a rat carrying a knife before, cause I'm pretty sure that's what I saw!"
Any rolls I need to make after seeing that crazy scene?
Abigail Crow |
Looking at Hank a little worried Abi asks 'Were you able to get back to sleep at all after the excitement last night? Are you sure you are feeling okay this morning? I haven't seen anything craz...strange out there, other than that guy yesterday.' as she says this she uses the back of her hand to check hank for fever.

Slim Pickings For Diggers
Unfortunately for those researchers working in the soil, it turns out to be a really humid and hot day. While the group recording folklore will occasionally be invited in to drink iced tea or lemonade, the members of this group will be baking in the sun and laying out grid patterns in the dirt.
About the geological makeup of the area, it is normal, and without anything valuable or interesting, except for the most dull geological paper possible.
At The End Of The Day
As you pack up and head for the farm, huge black clouds start rolling in, heralding a very dark night and possible summer storm. It’s been a long day for everyone. That evening, after everyone eats, you most probably want to get right to bed. It’s a terrible night as the humidity just builds and builds. One or two investigators might wake up awash in sweat, feeling like they’re sleeping on a wet sponge.
Make a Listen Roll.
Abigail Crow |
After washing the sweat and grim from herself Abi tries to go over her notes on last time, but even she knows there is no way to doctor these findings up, there is simply nothing of interest in the area they surveyed today.
Heading to bed, she tries to get some sleep, hoping that the impending rain will cool the area off.

Hank had quite a boring day, thank goodness. Listening to the locals talk about their town and the local cash crops was so monotonous. He soldiered through, not quite wanting to return to the farmhouse after what he saw the night before. HE made sure to stay within sight of his friends, creeped out by the town.
Corsario |
Hank is the lucky one! Wait! Did I say lucky? :S
In a moment on the night you awake to hear odd buzzing noises at the limit of their hearing, like a thousand million bumblebees, or something, far away in the night.
Fancy a walk alone in the forest in the middle of the night? I thought so. Anyway, doing the game with only two remaining characters would be boring. Remeber to "check" the Listen skill, so you can try and improve it when (if) we finish the adventure.
Abigail and Howard, please do a POW check.

Hank woke with a start as he couldn't get the crazy buzzing out of his ears. he wondered if anyone else heard them, but after the prior day's events, he wasn't about to get out of bed and check on anything. He reached out of his bedroll, making sure his trusty baseball bat was still within arm's reach.
