Alright, this is going better than I expected. Two things;

- Seven Day Count Down! You have until Midnight (GMT) on Wednesday the 16th to get me a completed character sheet. I expect at least crunch and background complete.

- As a favour, may I request that anyone using third party materials link me to them, or otherwise point me in the direction of being able to read them? Thank you.

Decided to change my name to Elo. I'll get working on a sheet.

The Aegis page in case you needed it.

I think it's going to be a sickly elf alchemist. The Mutagen will offset the brutally low constitution and the idea that the frail child can overcome his weaknesses with science! strikes me as a good fit for the steampunk setting.

This sounds like an interesting game. I do believe I shall submit a Magus.

Well, I will if I can come up with a background story.

The crunch is done, writing a story is not so easy.

Never played steampunk, but assuming it is just a different setting of 3.x/pathfinder so I think I could pick it up. I am gonna choose focus/foible method and randomize as those did before me for the giggles.

So, looking over different races, I came across something and it inspired me. Copied from the Inner Sea Beastiary:

Android:

Ability Score Racial Traits Androids have swift reflexes and are very intelligent, but have difficulty relating to others. As a result, androids gain a +2 bonus to Dexterity and Intelligence, but suffer a –2 penalty to Charisma.
Languages: Androids begin play speaking Common. Androids with high Intelligence can choose any languages they want (except secret languages, such as Druidic).

Feat and Skill Racial Traits

Androids gain a +2 racial bonus on Perception checks.
Emotionless: Androids have problems processing emotions properly, and thus take a –4 penalty on Sense Motive checks.

Senses Racial Traits

Exceptional Senses: Androids have darkvision and so can see perfectly in the dark to a range of 60 feet and in addition, they possess low-light vision.

Other Racial Traits

Constructed: For the purposes of effects targeting creatures by type (such as a ranger's favored enemy and bane weapons), androids count as both humanoids and constructs. Androids gain a +4 racial bonus on all saving throws against mind-affecting effects, paralysis, poison, and stun effects, are not subject to fatigue or exhaustion, and are immune to disease and sleep effects. Androids can never gain morale bonuses, and are immune to fear effects and all emotion-based effects.
Emotionless: Androids have problems processing emotions properly, and thus take a –4 penalty on Sense Motive checks.
Nanite Surge: An android's body is infused with nanites. Once per day as an immediate action, an android can cause her nanites to surge, granting a bonus equal to 3 + the android's character level on any one d20 roll; this ability must be activated before the roll is made. When an android uses this power, her circuitry-tattoos glow with light equivalent to that of a torch in illumination for 1 round.

I know that the setting has all of the characters starting at an orphanage, all of us at a rather young age. However, this particular character concept for this race is that the android was created as an experiment to make a race that would be able to live in the Fog by infusing them with it. The results weren't favorable, and the first prototype was dumped at the orphanage with no knowledge of their past, believing that they are human.

As for the Nanite Surge racial feature, I was thinking that it could be reflavored into a Fog Surge racial ability. Same effect, different power source. As for a class for this character, I'm definitely going to go with rogue. Just need a blessing for the race considering its unusual origins.

@Azrael Dukshi - woah! A very nice concept!

Dark Archive

Jon, where do you stand in regards Dreamscarred Press' Psionic releases?

Beyond that, I'm going to apply with a Machinesmith as I've yet to have a chance to do anything in the NeoExodus universe so this would be a good chance to playtest one of the classes that I know my group would want to play.

Focus: Intelligence
Foible: Wisdom

Strength: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Dexterity: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Constitution: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Charisma: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

The concept shall be someone who is attempting to do good but doesn't have the wisdom to see that sometimes messing with things they don't perhaps fully understand isn't a great idea. I'm thinking that the low Constitution perhaps signifies an incident in their past where some Fog leaked out and they were exposed which I shall attempt to tie into a drawback somehow.

The GM has approved Psionics.

Yorick here. I've got my custom race done up (I went a bit lighter on the RP than we had talked about), as well as the crunch (I skipped buying equipment for now because it's tedious and I hate it), and the first pass of the Background (which I'll likely refine). Obviously everything is 100% open to critique.

Crunch for the Machinesmith. I'm going to have a good think about the background and the place I want him to have come from.

At the moment, the only third party stuff used is the Machinesmith class from NeoExodus which I assume you have?

Chronic back pain jumped up today to bite me in the... well, back. Crunch and detailed concept should come tomorrow. Blargh.

Yeah, Psionics are fine. Although I really need to go refresh myself on the rules for that, since a fair few folks are interested in them.

Yorrick - Race looks interesting and decently balanced. I don't mind a lack of gear for now - level one means gear isn't a huge issue. Just make sure to add it if you're approved.

Jeffram - Yes, I have the Machinesmith. I love that kinder class, and my wife played one.

El Ronza - Back pain sucks. I get it too - sciatica in the lower back, the kind that cuts off your legs and hurts so much it makes you wanna pee. So I know a pain, if not your pain specifically. But you have seven days to get stuff done.

...seven days is all I can spare.

Damn it, Wesker.

Background:
The forest had been a paradise, and everyone knew that Arial, though still a boy, was destined for greatness. Strong, swift, hardy and brilliant, he was so full of raw ability that he studied the secret arcana with the wizards in their towers, fenced with the warriors in the yard and hunted with the scouts. The princes of the elves sparred with their words, attempting to win his loyalty, and he walked like a hero through the trees.

Until the trees grew twisted and sickly as the fog seeped into their roots and the fruit turned poisonous. The elves retreated, abandoning their paradise to an enemy that they could not fight. Only the very brave and the wise dared to stay, to risk everything to find a way to combat the fog that sickened the world. Of course, Arial stayed with them, though he was only a child, he was fast and strong and even with the fog pouring in, the wizards would need an assistant.

When he emerged from the fog, the sickness was deep in his blood. The magics had failed and the brave and wise had succumbed to evil, madness and poison. Arial himself had survived, but not unscathed. Though he was as brilliant and fast as ever, the fog had eroded his body, his lungs and heart were sickened, and his mind as well. He turned to the new magic of the alchemists, seeking a cure. In this new world, defined by the fog, there was only one place for a boy with no family. The Shadowvale Orphanage.

Arial - Sorry, would you mind mentioning the alias you rolled your stats under please?

@JonGarrett: I guess that you missed my post. Still waiting to see if you'd approve an android race before I go and create an alias for her.

Also pondering the whole traits thing, considering that she'd be less than a year old. Not a lot of background, just a lot of mental conditioning and programming. Though I suppose that can work for traits with a little tweaking.

No, I saw the post. And then! I forgot.

Yeah, you can try an Android. Should be interesting to see.

I am interested with joining with a character. I do have a few questions before I submit thought:

1) Would you let a PC play a construct character using the following 3rd party material?
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/templates/lifespark-const ruct-template

2) If yes, is a relatively light backstory alright?

3) In starting in an orphanage, are the characters supposed to be primarily children?

4) Are animal companions going to be a hindrance in the game?

5) Finally, I think I will only be able to post 1-2 times a day on average. Is that a potential problem?

I look forward to your response, and if allowed I could probably have a finalized character ready by the evening.

Johnnycat93 wrote:

As much as I like both mechanical races and Green Ronin, I am afraid I shall have to say no to this one. Between the difficult in keeping such a character alive without healing and the potency of some construct abilities, it's going to be difficult to challenge without destroying. I would suggest looking at the Ironborn by Rite Publishing or Gearforged by Kobold Press for good alternatives, or Paizo's own Android.

Johnnycat93 wrote:

I don't mind light back story so long as you make up the details elsewhere. Since construct characters tend to be young and all.

Johnnycat93 wrote:

Young adults. Around 16, or the non-human equivilant.

Johnnycat93 wrote:

Nope, feel free to grab one.

Johnnycat93 wrote:

That'll be fine, although I would appreciate people posting in the discusion or such even on slower days when they have nothing to post in the main thread, so I know you're still there. I get lonely.

Johnnycat93 wrote:

No worries, take your time since I've thrown a spanner in the works.

A couple of questions on the setting I'd like to ask:

1. What city is the Shadowvale Orphanage in? What is it like (Population, size, government, institutions), and who are the notable figures in it?

2. How high is the Fog? Can it be kept out with a large enough physical wall? How long has the Fog plagued the world? How do most cities protect themselves from it?

3. How does a person protect themselves when they need to travel outside the city? Is there safe communication and travel between the cities, and by what methods?

4. What are the symptoms of Fog poisoning - how much exposure can an average person take before becoming sick?

Scarab Sages

This intrigues me. I've never played steampunk, but youall look to need a support character, and I like that. I think I'm going to roll a Tactician. They specialize in unifying various characters into a single force.

Here we go.

18 = Int
8 = Str

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Str 8

Con 11

Wis 10
Cha 11

Not bad. Not spectacular either. I'll put a build together tonight.

MORE!? IMPUDENCE!

Azrael Dukshi wrote:
1. What city is the Shadowvale Orphanage in? What is it like (Population, size, government, institutions), and who are the notable figures in it?

The city is Shadowvale, oddly enough. It's a decent sized town of about 8000 souls (some of which have a body) but I'll be writting more details in a bit.

Azrael Dukshi wrote:
2. How high is the Fog? Can it be kept out with a large enough physical wall? How long has the Fog plagued the world? How do most cities protect themselves from it?

It's currently halted at about 400 feet above sea level. Walls can keep it out, but it will pour through any crack it can find. Most cities either rise above it or use barrier magic, using the Fog itself to power the spells. Some went under ground, following the Dwarf example, and abandoned the upper city.

At this point the Fog has been around a 1000 or so years.

Azrael Dukshi wrote:
3. How does a person protect themselves when they need to travel outside the city? Is there safe communication and travel between the cities, and by what methods?

Airships are, if not entirely common, then at least fairly well known. Most travel by them. It is also possible get sealed suits and armour to go into the Fog, for a price, but that's a short term solution, usually for short experditions.

Azrael Dukshi wrote:
4. What are the symptoms of Fog poisoning - how much exposure can an average person take before becoming sick?

It varies wildly. If your breathe in too much it will damage the lungs - exposure to the skin cause patches of necrotic flesh or other, equally unpleasant symptoms.

The most common trait is that, regardless of exposure, it start to affect the brain. It damages the ability to judge danger and self preservation, it warps your perceived relationships and, eventually, sends you crazy, upon which most people affected try to flee into the Fog. What happens to them is only rumoured...

So does my backstory work with your established backstory and effects of the Fog?

Yes, it works. Mostly it'll cause something nasty and unpleasant, and patches of stone like skin qualifies.

Wee, Natural armor bonus with horrible aesthetic reflections.

All right, so, hypothetically speaking, say that I wanted a custom made trait:

Fogborn:
You were created specifically to survive in the toxic environments outside the cities. Though you are a failure, you are still better adapted to function in those conditions. You have a +2 trait bonus to saves versus Fog, and you can see twice as far in foglike conditions (10ft).

Would you accept that as a trait for my character, or do you consider it too much?

No, that was actually pretty much what I was thinking (I was thinking a bonus to survival instead or the extra vision).

Okay. My back's feeling a bit better today, so I've started crunching the numbers, as it were. I'm definitely going with an ambitious young tinker who wants to use the fog as a power source for his automatons. No mad scientist would be complete without something going horribly wrong, so if the GM wants to impose any consequences or come up with a horrible accident, I'm all for it. >:D

I'll come up with something. I just am fighting off the remains of a migraine, so I figured I'd dot, so I didn't forget about this.

Scarab Sages

I am almost finished with Igor, a Blue Psion (Shaper). With all these tinkers and machinists, someone's gotta provide the gears, springs, cogs and other materials, right?

I'll adjust Farash's age to 16. I might add a few notes to tie his background to Master of the Sword Alark Coutran.

[EDIT - Age adjusted, background tweaked slightly]

Powering along on Victor Caligori!

Curious how much leeway we have for the backstory. I have an idea for someone raised with great discipline, possibly a monk. They could conceivably have just recently come to the orphanage...or could be from a religious adjunct to the orphanage.

Does something along those lines work? Thanks,

Scarab Sages

Igor the Gooey Stuff Shaper Blue Goblin Boy

intro:
Children are generally not kind. Especially to us ones who have been in d'Fog. My name be Igor, but dem kids, they call me Gooey, Shaper, Stuffer, Freak... worse. Maybe it be my blue skin, or my shortness, or that I look like a Goblin. They love to catch and poke. They set water over doors and nail my shoes to the floor all the time, but I'm too smart. I always check now. Recently, McDreth set a spell on me in the mid'night. A snake, I think. I didn't get a proper look before George smashed it all t'bits. Scared the color clean out o'him. He ran and got an adult, but George was gone by the time the man arrived, and so were the snake. McDreth got a ear tweak for that one. It's the only time so far when one'o them lot's got trouble. They always get away with pokin' on me.

Anyway, I have no friends for a long while. Then I decide I make'em me friends. That's when I wishes really hard and really long. Then I gets George. He be my imaginary real friend. He come to me at night, when I wishes really hard. But he not tease and hit, so I happy.

I have a special place at the Orphanage. I haven't seen any like me anywheres so far. I can make stuff by thinkin' it. They calls me a Shaper. I control the Ectoplams from another plane of the world.

Headmistress Quist put me under Mistress Longridge the Tinker. I help out by making stuff. She need a wood cog, I maken' her one. She needs 500 small wood balls, I be makin' them too. I be tryin' to make more then wood and cloth stuff, but so far I can't manage. I know I can. George is almost as hard, but I need more practice.

I been in d'Fog once. They say I got picked up on a recue for some other kid. I was just lyin' there in the road just inside d'Fog line. Nobody knows about me folks. Nobody's come forward for me in my 12 years. Maybe no one will.

Racial:

Psionic Aptitude: When a blue takes a level in a favored class, he can choose to gain an additional power point instead of a hit point or skill point.
Pariah: The appearance of the blue can affect the reactions of those nearby. A blue takes a -1 penalty to Charisma-based skill checks when dealing with non-goblinoid humanoids, but gains a +1 bonus to Charisma-based skill checks while interacting with goblins.
Repletion (Su): A blue can sustain his body without need of food or water. If he spends 1 power point, a blue does not need to eat or drink for 24 hours

Discipline: Metacreativity (creation):
Every psion must decide at 1st level which psionic discipline he will specialize in. Choosing a discipline provides a psion with access to the class skills associated with that discipline (see above), as well as the powers restricted to that discipline, and the special abilities associated with that discipline (detailed below). However, choosing a discipline also means that the psion cannot learn powers that are restricted to the other disciplines (generalist psions cannot learn powers on any of the discipline power lists). He can't even use such powers by employing psionic items.

Bonus Feats:

A psion gains a bonus feat at 1st level, 5th level, 10th level, 15th level, and 20th level. This feat must be a psionic feat, a metapsionic feat, or a psionic item creation feat.

Discipline Talents (Ps):

Choose two powers from the following list: create sound, crystal shard, ectoplasmic creation, and entangling ectoplasm.
As long as you maintain psionic focus, you may manifest either of your chosen powers without paying a power point cost, but the power may not be augmented or affected by metapsionic feats. The duration of create sound and entangling ectoplasm is one round per two psion levels (minimum 1 round), while ectoplasmic creation lasts one hour. The damage of crystal shard is reduced to 1d3.

personality/character:

Igor is easily missed. Almost uncannily so. He is remarkable in that he has blue skin and the general features of a goblin, but, at the same time, those features are so fitting for what they should be that he is easily forgotten, like an assumed fact. He is very quiet and loves to hide in the shadows. Speaking above a whisper actually requires effort for him. This, combined with his natural stealth, has lead him to sit through entire semesters of class without the teacher calling on him for a single answer.
Igor has one friend, his imaginary-real friend George. George takes many forms, and changes depending on Igor's needs. The fact of George's existence is doubted by everyone except Igor himself.
However, this may soon change. Igor is quickly becoming fed up with people doubting him, so he is working on making George last longer. Being able to conjure a Tinker's companion out of thin air in seconds is sure to turn a few heads, especially if he figures out how to make it last more than a few seconds, which he is currently obsessively working toward.

I plan to play Igor as a creation fanatic. Nearly all his powers will be of the metacreativity discipline, and he will be getting all the Fabricate-like spells. I picture him being the supply master/buffer/debuffer for the party and whoever else needs him. With the ability to create mundane things out of thin air, he can supply any machinesmith or tinker with parts needed for their mechanical contraptions to work. He can also summon George in a pinch, but he will be little more than a flanking buddy until Igor has a few levels under his belt.

If you have any questions or notice any errors (which is entirely possible as it's after midnight now), please let me know and I'll answer/correct asap.

I nearly forgot to finish buying things.

This is Azrael, showing you the completed character for this adventure. Hope that she manages to get in. Feel free to read and review - I'm always interested in hearing criticisms.

Actually, seems like a very fun idea but it's not going to make sense for me. Best of luck to y'all.

And here's my tinker! He still needs gear, traits and languages, but otherwise, he should be all done.

Look him over, GM, and let me know what you think!

Class features:

Blueprints: Victor has 1 blueprint, the mechapede, which can contain a total of 1 build point (BP).

The Mechapede: The mechapede is Victor’s first (and only) blueprint – a base form that’s serpentine, with various tiny protuberances acting as legs, giving the automaton the overall appearance of a four-foot-long, somewhat flat, centipede. Unless he plans otherwise, the mechapede’s default invention is intimidating design, which he uses to frighten off any who disrupt his tinkering at the orphanage. This design sharpens off the edges of the mechapede's body segments, and gives it narrow slits for eyes.

The mechapede has a BAB of +1, Fort, Ref, and Will saves of +0, 10 Str and Dex, and 25 hit points. In addition, the amount of time Victor has spent with the mechapede has given it a small semblance of intelligence – it displays signs of personality rather than shuffling and staring awkwardly when idle.

Invention book: Contains the following inventions:
1st level: arms, brute design, endearing design, intimidating design, nimble design, precise design, repair kit, responsive programming

Deploy automaton: Victor can have 1 active automaton at a time. He uses the mysterious fog that creeps over the land as a power source for his automatons. He can deploy an automaton once per day.

Directives: Victor can give his automatons various directives. The DC to interpret a directive with a Spellcraft check is 15.

HALT!: Victor can clear all directives given to his automatons as a free action, returning them to an idle state.

Innovations: Victor knows the following innovations:
Favoured blueprint (Mechapede) – All automatons built from Victor’s mechapede blueprint receive +1 hit die. This benefit carries over should the mechapede blueprint be rewritten.

Master’s Presence: Any of Victor’s automatons within 30 feet of him use his base saving throw values to calculate their own saving throws (Reflex +2)

Scribe invention: Victor can make copies of inventions for distribution. Attempting to copy from a source other than his own invention book destroys the original source due to various annotations and ink spills.

Personality and appearance:

Victor Caligori is a fair-haired young lad of about fifteen. His hair is short and messy, and, like his hands, often stained with black grease and various oils, from his bad habit of not wearing gloves and tugging his hair into place. He has pale brown eyes, and a twiglike frame with long fingers and quick hands.

He is exceptionally bright for a child his age, and isn't too shy to say so. He is also rather driven, able to go days without eating if he's working on a new invention, sleeping at his desk and only pausing for sleep when he collapses from exhaustion, grease on his face and various metallic dusts sticking to his skin.

He wears simple clothes, but when undertaking particularly dangerous parts of machinesmithing, doesn't hesitate to protect himself with thick gloves, goggles, boots reinforced with metal, and a heavy leather apron. He is brash and somewhat impulsive, and sometimes doesn't realize something's going wrong until it blows up in his face - often literally.

Dear diary...:

Day 1. Arrived at Shadowvale Orphanage. My memory is... fuzzy, blank. I can't remember the accident that brought me here. I only remember being dropped off by Aunt Deselde, with my few belongings and the blueprint I smuggled in the lining of my coat. I do remember her smashing my invention, my lovely mechapede, but she grudgingly let me keep his clockwork insides. I can rebuild him.

Day 2. The other children are... strange. My dorm is cramped and stuffy. The other boys stare at me and whisper. I get teased for my interest in academics - only wizards are interested in learning, and I'm not smart enough to be a wizard. Or so they tell me, anyway.

I managed to sneak a spanner and screwdriver from Mistress Longbridge's lab. They smell comfortingly of grease and oil. I started working on my mechapede again.

Day 7. Aaron tried to grab my mechapede while I was reading. It cut his hand open. He fainted from the shock. Mistress Ven'ia fixed him up, but Mistress Quist wasn't happy with me. I tried telling her it wasn't my fault, but she didn't care. My mechapede now lies in pieces again, and I had to return the tools I borrowed.

Day 12. I've been invited to study under Mistress Longbridge. She made me rebuild my mechapede again. I'm getting faster at it - it only took me half an hour this time. She was impressed with how sturdy it was, saying most young tinkers don't manage to build such powerful automatons. That made me feel a little better about myself. She did seem a little concerned with how sharp and angry it was, though.

Day 35. I've been tinkering with my mechapede non-stop. I know several ways to augment it, to make it stronger, faster, better. Unfortunately, I can only do so much with the chassis. I've been cautioned against using the fog, but what do they know? I know how powerful it is, and I know how to harness it for my machines. I just have to be careful not to get caught.

Day 67. There was another accident today.

Alright here's my submission for the game, a Gearforged Ranger. He's all stated, fully complete, and ready to go. I tried to make sure to get some good backstory info in while keeping it relatively light.

Observant readers may notice I left the third relationship slot unfilled. The reason being that I hope that one of the other players would like to have some manner of "bond" having already formed before play begins. If anyone is interested please let me know.

I can tell you straight away that Victor would be fascinated by Ignus. Though he'd probably be annoying in always asking questions, or wanting to open him up and see what makes him tick (literally). For science, of course; no harm would be done, he'd close him up again seamlessly...

I can also see interesting potential dynamics between Victor and some of the other characters. Especially Igor. That would be great fun.

This is the alias for Ptolmaeus' submission, I reworked the backstory to put him more in line with the established lore.
