”The nostalgia of things unknown, of lands forgotten or unfound, is upon me at times. Often I long for the gleam of yellow suns upon terraces of translucent azure marble, mocking the windless waters of lakes unfathomably calm; for lost, legendary palaces of serpentine, silver and ebony, whose columns are green stalactites; for the pillars of fallen temples, standing in the vast purpureal sunset of a land of lost and marvellous romance. I sigh for the strange and hidden cities of this world, with burning brazen domes and slender pinnacles of gold and copper, that pierce a heaven of heated lazuli.”

Rendyl stepped aside as those more knowledgeable came forward, feeling the healing warmth of Sarenrae flow through him as Djebelle called upon her goddess to heal everyone, April in particular. Like Vik, when it became clear that this would be their stop for the night, he looked about the area, trying to figure out why Jhod seemed so out of sorts.

The exploration of the shrine doesn’t take too much time, and even if Viklop or Rendyl are not familiar with details of its constructions, they know it was something grand and magnificent before. You find all sorts of remaining of humanoid creatures, but there’s no remains of animals or wildlife. It seems that the only ones the bear would prey on was sentient creatures. You also find old, rusty and broken gear. There’s a set of full plate that once might have been grand and of masterwork craftsmanship, but now it’s almost destroyed by the passage of time. You also notice that the remains seems to span from several different eras, as if this place has been standing for centuries, and for centuries the guardian has been taking lives.

Of all the new, old, and decaying things you found, one in particular catches you attention: There’s in the oldest remains of the ruins, a scimitar that seems to be immune to the passage of time. The blade altho dirty and uncared, it’s still sharp and the weapon still seems fit for use.

==//==

April slowly open her eyes, looking around seeing familiar faces and familiar crying faces. She seems to be at loss of what happened and she just asks ”Tegan, what are you doing here?”

Human Male Ranger 2 (Skirmisher) | HP 24 | AC: 18 | T: 13 | FF:15 (19/13/16 w/shield) | Fort +5 Ref +6 Will +0 | CMB +4 | CMD 17 | Initiative +3 | Perception +5

Rendyl's eyes drifted to the scimitar laying under a light dusting of debris, the ranger reaching down to pick up the weapon. He and Vik had been at it for some time now, most of the things having fallen apart in their hands. This weapon, however, seemed well-balanced still and solid, and as the young man used his hand to brush some of the dust away to see the blade beneath he hissed as a fine, bloody line popped up on his thumb.

Smiling, he held the blade out for Vik to inspect, thinking the swordlord would know better than he the quality of such a weapon. The ranger also had an idea of who he thought should use the scimitar, should it be the well-made piece he thought it was, but he figured he would let the others come to that conclusion on their own. He probably seemed like enough of a love-sick pup without adding any more fuel to the fire.

Taking the sword, Vik swung it about in a few short katas, noting its weight and the keen edge. He looks back at Ren and smiles, as he can almost read what the other man is thinking just by the expression on his face.

"Yes, I agree. This would be a fine weapon for Djebelle. Its edge is as sharp as he tongue and undoubtedly she can put such a fine weapon to good use. Let me just clean it up a bit then you can do the honours, if you like."

Vik takes out his cleaning kit and goes to work making the sword presentable to Djebelle. Once he has the weapon shining clean, he presents it to Ren.

"There you go...that should put a smile on her face!"

Rendyl grinned as he accepted the now-polished weapon from the other man. "I'd be glad to. Let's see if April and the others are ok first." Now that he and Vik had ascertained that they would be free from interference for a bit, the ranger thought it prudent to wait until they knew everyone was safe and would make it before offering the find to the priestess.

Tegan is quick to wipe her cheeks but her eyelashes remain damp and heavy from tears. ”We came to save you. I can’t believe how brave you were.” Tegan motions to Djebelle, ”our cleric, Djebelle, healed you.” The icy aura around Tegan recedes and any lingering snowflakes have long melted away.

Tegan gets to her feet, brushing the dirt from the knees of her apron and skirt. ”What happened to the bandits?” Didn’t they say something about bandits? Tegan tries to recall the earlier conversation, but all Tegan can think about is the colossal bear.

She gazes upon her sister, watching as the color of life returns to her face and body. I can’t believe she stayed. Somewhere nearby(?), Rendyl and Vik talk about the scimitar but Tegan doesn’t seem to notice.

Human Hero Killer1 / Holy Assassin1 / Deceiver2

April roll her eyes as if saying ‘who said I needed saving?’ but she doesn’t say anything out loud, maybe it’s just the past speaking louder than reason. ”Wait… where am I? And why I’m hurting all over?” she says finally realizing the injuries that weren’t healed by Djebelle’s miracles. ”And what you mean save me?”

She looks around bewildered noticing where she was then she recounts part of the tale ”We split up and I lured the bear away, I was almost sure it wouldn’t chase me if I went far enough from the shrine, because it only attacked us when we got closer. We explored this area from a long time, but the only time we were attacked was when we got closer to here. ” she mentions the surroundings. So I ran, and I escaped it, but when I was moving towards the other... she looks blankly for a moment … I don’t remember anything else. Then, I wake up looking at you crying.

Damiel:

You get the inkling that even if what she described is what happened, she is not exactly telling the whole history. Maybe she’s trying to embellish things to make herself look good, maybe she is omitting something she don’t want others to know, or maybe she doesn’t remember everything and it’s just assuming things trying to fill the gaps in her own memory.

Tegan holds her arms in a square fashion, her hands covering her elbows. She looks away from her sister, ”We came here to rescue you. The bandits have been more ruthless than ever. Oleg’s Trading Post is all but cinders and someone is masquerading around as me.” Luckily Svetlana and I have a code phrase now.

A thought surfaces to Tegan's mind. "Sister?" Tegan ventures "Did you see me here when the bear attacked? Or rather, someone who looked like me?" Maybe they have the ability to transform like the bear-man. But how? A spell? A magic potion? A curse?

Rendyl listened to the exchange between the dwarf and the two lovely women in silence. At Tegan's question, Rendyl shrugged. "I wouldn't know much of what lies in store with Tuskgutter...but if we can down a ferocious beast like this, I would assume we could handle an overgrown boar."

The ranger remembered the way the sorceress had pointedly tried to avoid her sister at Oleg's, so understood her desire to see April off after ensuring she was ok. He decided to let the others hash out where they would camp while he approached Djebelle (along with Vik, should he wish to come).

"We found this in the ruins...Vik and I both use a straight blade, but this seemed just your style..." With that Rendyl pulled out the beautiful scimitar that the warriors had discovered in the dust and debris, holding it out for the priestess to accept.

April ponders for a moment, as if recalling the recent events was something difficult to do, maybe because of the near death experience, maybe for any other reason, but in the end she says ”I didn’t see who shot arrows at me, I don’t know if it was you or someone else.” she answers bitterly.

The night passes with no disturbance. There’s no noise from wild animals, there’s sign of wild life near the shrine. It seems that it might take a while until the normal fauna returns to this place.

After breakfast, the opposition bids you farewell, escorting their injured back to Oleg’s, leaving you to explore on your own. Where do you plan to do now? Seeking another wild monster to battle or the berries as requested?

Tegan:
Taking the last shift, Tegan rises and quietly prepares for the day while her companions finish resting. Tegan retrieves her brush and small mirror from the saddle bag and works the knots out of her long, inky black hair. She twists and pins her hair up loosely before walking back to pack up her sleeping gear. Tegan sits on a rock, eating a piece of fruit and some cheese as the others begin to stir.

Tegan stiffly says goodbye to her sister with her usual coolness as she and her party depart for Oleg’s. When the NPCs are a good distance away, Tegan turns to her companions: ”I think it would be best to hunt Tuskgutter next. From the map, he looks like he may be closer than the Fangberries.” She takes time to look at each of her companions before focusing her eyes on the tracker in the group – Rendyl – as if expecting him to jump to the task of leading the way. Tegan also glances over at their mounts, unsure how the horses and mule will fair on forest terrain.

Djebelle gives the new scimitar a further, experimental, swish to test its balance before sheathing it in her scabbard.

She does not sleep well, suffering dreams in which she is re-fighting the bear. She wakes several times, and is relieved to be on watch for the later part of the night, welcoming in the dawn.

After her morning prayers, she rejoins the others and nods at Tegan's conversation. "I agree with that, although the map is a bit vague. If we're hunting a boar, maybe we should see if our hunters can track it down?"

Rendyl woke with the light of the sun peeking over the horizon, eyes squinting as he sat up. He was a bit stiff, but otherwise was feeling fine. He could only wonder what the others who had suffered injuries at the hand of the massive bear were feeling. The young man stood, straightening up and quickly working out the kinks in his neck and shoulders before he went about the process of strapping on his armor once again.

As the two women both seem to look to him for guidance with the famous boar, Rendyl shrugged, indifferent as to whether they should look for berries or boars next. Both seemed an improvement over massive bears guarding ancient shrines...that then turned into people...that then turned into piles of goop.

As they start along the way, the ranger scanning the foliage and ground for signs of their quarry, the lanky man looked to the others. "Not that I mind moving about with a task at hand...it certainly is a lot less boring than surveying, I'll admit, wasn't part of our charter to map out these areas and thoroughly explore them? I feel as though we aren't doing very well in that regard. Although maybe it would be best to wait until the land is safer beforehand."

Damiel watches the other group limp away in the direction of Oleg Trading Post, and muses out loud. "Guess they are giving up for now. Perhaps we will see them when we return to Oleg or out in the Greenbelt."

Listening to the positions of the others in the group Damiel looks over at the ranger, "I believe that you are correct, Rendyl. While we have finished some quests, our main mission was to explore and map these lands. Perhaps we should explore and map here, and over at the Thorn River Camp, then get the fangberries before heading back to Oleg. That should take a couple of days and give us a break from near fatal battles, at least for a bit."

The exploration goes with no surprises and days’ flashes as you slowly explore the Narlmarches. Rendyl provides the group with food relying on his tracker skills, and it’s on the 9th day of exploration that you find the wild animal lair.
Tuskgutter’s lair is a hollow under a large fallen pine tree, the branches of which have created a natural shelter. Bones litter the den, but you find no trace of said wild boar.
Intentions? No combat, nobody is home at the moment.

While at least some of the others might be sore and grumpy after days in the wilds, the ranger felt rejuvenated, enjoying the trekking through the wilderness. The fact that they were helping future generations to claim this land and hopefully develop farmsteads instead of metropolises only brightened his mood. Slowly he was getting over his funk about his relationship with Ilana, the companionship and wilderness moving his mind forward to brighter days ahead.

As the group finally uncovered the home of the feared boar, Tuskgutter, Rendyl looked about to confirm that the creature was not about for the moment. "Probably out scavenging for food...it will return at some point. Best to wait here for it instead of chasing it about, I think."

Leaving Jhod behind to fix up the shrine, Damiel seems content to follow the rangers lead whilst exploring the areas where the temple is, and where the bandit camp was.

As they come upon the lair of the beast Tuskgutter, and Rendyl pronounces it safe and that the beast is not at home, Damiel nods in the affirmative at the suggestion that the group waits for it to return. "Can you look around and let us know the best spots to hide so we can take down the beast with minimal pain on our side?" he asks the woodsman.

"Perhaps some sort of trap to give us an advantage over the beast might be in order. You're a hunter Ren, what would you suggest?"

The past few days has seen Vik retreat more and more within himself. It is not the 'hardship' of living rough that has caused him to become more reticent, but something was playing on the swordsman's mind. It was surprising when he actually spoke, for it had been days since he had said more than a few words at a time.

Rendyl thinks about all the suggestions for a moment, nodding absently. "A wild boar is typically omnivorous, so it eats both meats and berries and roots and such. Placing food near the mouth of the cave will likely entice it if it is skittish, yes, that's a great idea!"

As Vik spoke his suggestion, the ranger looked to him in surprise, then looked thoughtful. "A trap would be nice, but I don't know how much time we have to work with. We can spring a trap with ourselves, of course, by hiding in the trees or nearby. The only issue with that would be the beast might decide to run off, and we'd waste time clambering back out of the tree. Still, that's a better suggestion than potentially getting gored, I'll wager."

Maybe Rendyl hadn’t considered this when choosing this tree, but they are now against the wind, which makes easier to the boar to catch their scent, but even so, Tuskgutter roams around carefully searching for the source of the scent, but finds nothing.

The giant hog appears almost soundlessly from the undergrowth. To call it huge is not doing the creature justice and the spines along it's back, evoking an age when all such creatures were huge and deadly.

Slowly standing on the branch he had chosen to hide upon, the swordlord-in-training positions himself over the great beast. He holds his sword in both hands, the point aimed between his feet and directly at the neck of the hog. His hands grip the cross-guard of the weapon tightly as he takes a short step off the branch.

Dropping towards the enemy, Vik closes his eyes briefly to offer a prayer...to who, not even he can say. He just has time to adjust the angle of penetration before the full force of gravity re-asserts itself upon him, and his momentum slams the clenched blade deep into the wild boar's muscular neck.

Damage: 1d4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 = 7
Fire: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Unfortunately she hasn't had nearly as much training with her sling as she has with her scimitar. She blushes, furious with herself - this isn't a training exercise, and that boar isn't a straw dummy. There isn't time for her to be incompetent.

The surprise came as surprise to more than the wild boar. With the savagery from the bear still fresh in mind Tegan has no desire to engage such other monster in combat, and she climbs higher in the tree, to avoid tangling with it. Fortunately, Rendyl and Damiel shoot at the wild creature as soon it’s appears, causing some damage to the still surprised monster. Djebelle tries to help as well, but even her enhanced sling offers no danger to the boar.

The previous effort from the group seems to pay off as Viklop in a daring move, leap from his hiding place in the tree and with a mighty blow, finishes off the wild boar.
Well, that was ‘fast’.

Directly searching the boar corpse and lair, there is no loot or treasure to be found; maybe the treasure would be the quest reward, when you deliver the beast head at Oleg’s. With this task done, the charters now have the following pending tasks to solve:

  • Sootscale Kobolds in the Kamelands
  • Oleg wants a Tatzlwyrm
  • Fangberries
  • Falgrim Sneeg
  • Svetlana's Ring

Check here for the quests descriptions.

Rendyl shrugged, climbing down from the tree and grinning at Vik as he clapped the man on the back. "Nice work! Usually such beasts fly into a frenzy even after receiving a killing blow, but your strike managed to fell it instantly." He smiled at the swordlord, proceeding to check out the den quickly to ensure it didn't contain any hidden treasures. Once that was done, he set about helping to procure the head of Tuskgutter, thinking that perhaps a bit more exploration was in order, then a quick trip back to Oleg's to part with the putrefying trophy.

"Perhaps we head back to Oleg's and thoroughly explore the area on the way?"

"With all the meat on this boar, it would be a shame to let it rot. Is there any way we could take it back to Oleg's and have him butcher it? Would be meat for months!"

A smile replaces the normal scowl on Damien face, as he turns to Vik, "good work. He could have hurt someone badly, but you saved us much pain."

As Rendyl suggests some small amount of exploration then heading back to the trading post, "that sounds good to me. We could head east to the river, and explore the area seeing if the fangberries are there, then head back to Oleg, before the head rots and is no good for what Oleg wants."

Tegan slowly climbs down her tree when it's apparent Tuskgutter is dead.

Tegan offers: "I could use my powers are freeze the meat for the journey back. It'll last longer that way."

"Yes, we should gather fangberries before returning to Oleg's"

The group decides to explore some more before heading back to Oleg’s with their prize. After leaving the Narlmarches, the exploration is a lot faster and they are able to cover a bigger area finding some interesting things.

Landmark: Rickety Bridge
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
The Thorn River winds through a 20-foot-deep gulch here between a pair of hills. An old wooden bridge spans the gulch, allowing passage over the river provided that not many attempt it at once. The bridge can support one Medium creature at a time, and groans and creaks ominously while it does. When Rendyl in his horse attempted to cross the bridge, it groaned and creaked even louder— some of the bridge’s planks gave way, almost throwing Rendyl off his horse into the river. Surely, without some repair this bridge can’t be used for normal transportation.

Landmark: FangBerry Thicket

A dense patch of rare raspberry-like berries known as fangberries grows in a long, thin valley between two low hills here. Much of the thorny thicket is draped in the white gossamer silk of spider webs. The best of the berries lie at the heart of the thicket, but harvesting must be done slowly to avoid being lacerated by the thousands of fangberry thorns.

Nature DC 15 | Survival DC 15:

Gathering enough for one potion or a day’s meal requires 10 minutes of work and a DC 20 Survival check, with failure indicating the forager takes 1d6 points of piercing damage from the plant’s sharp thorns. In addition, each round that a person within the thicket takes more than one move equivalent action, he takes 1 point of piercing damage from the thorns. If you are using an armor that gives you +7 bonus to armor, then you can collect the berries with no danger of being hurt by the thorns.

Intentions?

"So many webs" Damiel quips as he looks at the thickets and the webs. "Rendyl, do you think that their are any spiders around?"

The lanky man grinned at Tegan, nodding in approval. "Yes, keeping the head and meat frozen, or at least cool, will keep them preserved until we get back to Oleg's. Good thinking!" With that, the ranger started to harvest the pork off Tuskgutter's corpse, knowing the horses can handle the extra weight.

Rendyl glanced with dismay at the bridge over the Thorn River, but isn't overly glum. With a bit of repair, or perhaps a new expanse, a new thoroughfare could be gained over the river, cutting a significant amount of travel time for the new settlers flocking to the land after it was announced it had been tamed. Such was the hope, anyway.

The ranger glanced at the berry bushes ominously, eyeing the sharp thorns more than the webs. "Don't know about any spiders, but we're in for a world of hurt gathering these things unless someone has something that can protect them from those thorns. I can maybe muddle about doing it, if someone will hand me something to place them in."

Djebelle has been slightly distant since the encounter with Tuskgutter - and from before that really, the mauling she suffered from the bear.

She nods at Rendyl's words. "I can provide some protection to your armour if that will help."

Vik wades into the briar of berry bushes, and at first gets a number of nasty scratches (1d6 ⇒ 4hp damage), but soon gets the hang of it, coming out with enough berries for 3 days food.

Rendyl is talking to Djebelle when suddenly he saw Vik throw all caution to the wind and enter the Fangberry bushes. He winced as he saw the swordsman proceed to get jabbed and prodded by the long thorns, but the man had a keen mind and was a quick study, and soon learned how to brush aside the limbs while grasping the berries with his free hand.

The ranger grinned at the man as he returned with a plethora of the berries. "Well, that's that, then. I'm anxious to see if our bandits have returned to Oleg's...let us continue on!" He clapped Vik on the shoulder, then walked back to Djebelle and laid his hand on her shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze as he smiled at her.
