Janiries Shaelara |
"Hey, Duvall. Mind taking a look at this?"
Janiries would show the Helmite the whips taken from the bounty hunter, pointing out the unusual markings.
Looking at through the loot, it seems that both Hezar and Ariael have taken the Composite Longbow +1. We do only have one guys! ;)
Hezar |
Hezar gives a test pull on his new bow, then laughs as he finds he cannot pull it. He trails back to Jan and trades it out with his old Longbow.
I guess I will just have to make a better one for myself.
Duvall of Helm |
@ Duvall and Janiries: remembering, of course, that interpreting the marking requires a DC 15 religion check....
Religion check:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Will do, Duvall replies, taking the whips from Janiries and examining the markings. By the way, how is your arm? he murmurs as he looks at the whip.

Belgrin Stoneshield |
"Aye, best to keep hold of at least one for now, bring it back later, so the temple has proof and somethin to act upon. Stories are one thing, but evidence of a deed tends to spur people onward just a mite faster. I say let's cover the ground we can; we'll judge what to do with 'em tonight, eh?"
DM Locke |
The remainder of your travel for the day is quiet; you don't run into any other people at all, which is somewhat odd as you are still not that far from two major towns and their surrounding farms.
When it comes time to camp, Hezar easily finds a secure camping spot under an outcropping of rock, roughly 100 feet from the road. While obscured by shrubs, you still have a pretty good view in either direction, which should allow you an advantageous vantage point on any traffic going in either direction.
Marius proves to be an engaging companion, with an easy manner and many stories to tell of his forest adventures. He makes a serviceable quarterstaff from a hawthorn sapling, whittling it down in less than half an hour. He also found a holly bush, providing him with needed materials for many of his spells. He also picked up several small stones and makes a sling out of the remnants of one of the bounty hunters cloaks.
Are you going to use a watch schedule similar to last night? With eight of you, you could have shorter watches (assuming you trust Marius, of course).
Janiries Shaelara |
"I see no reason to change up the watch schedule. Marius can help with the first watch, if he feels up to it."
Keeping the loot rather close, Janiries would break out the cooking pots again and attempt a decent meal, muttering to herself about the need to learn how to cook soon.
6pm: Set up camp
7-11pm: First Watch (Hezar/Elur/Marius)
11pm-3am: Second Watch (Janiries/Belgrin)
3am-7am: Third Watch (Landon/Ariael/Duvall)
Hezar |
Hezar sets his snares in hopes of having rabbit in the morning.
Survival 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Agree on same Watch
Elur Tamut |
Elur sets up the fire, watching it dance as she eats her rations for the night. Her laugh floats through the camp as she listens to Marius' stories, and when the time comes for watch she sits back and watches silently, for a change.
Yeah, same watch.
Perception for watch: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Lol. It's a good thing we have two other people watching with me.
After an hour of "watch," Elur's snores can be heard from where she sits.
Belgrin Stoneshield |
watch schedule is good.
Belgrin takes a spot, and uses the time to keep his logbook up to date on events. His sawmill snores are known for disturbing rest, so he moves just a little further away from the group than last night. During his watch, he keeps his shield and maulaxe ready while he surveys the wilderness.
perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 don't forget 60 ft darkvision where applicable.
Hezar |
Watch Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 +2 for humans
Duvall of Helm |
Duvall sleeps fitfully during the first two watches and rises when Janiries awakens him, to don his armor and take up his watch.
Perception during watch:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
As morning approaches, he meditates and prays to Helm, replenishing his spells.

Janiries Shaelara |
Is it possible to investigate the noise during the watch? If so..
Janiries would nudge Belgrin, before speaking quietly to him.
"Think I heard something just north of here, so I'm going to check it out. Keep an eye out here, alright?"
She'd then proceed north, investigating the source of the voice.

Perception check DC 15: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Your caution pays off - you notice just in time that the figure was leading you into a trap - in this case, a simple, uncovered pit, difficult to see in the darkness. At the bottom (some 10 feet deep) lay several animal skeletons (deer, perhaps?) and the remains of the pit's former covering.
You hear the laughter again, this time right beside you, and suddenly find your wrists grasped by hands that are supernaturally strong, and as cold as ice. You are dragged to your knees and you hear the woman's voice clearly to your left. Cold lips just brush your ear, and the smell of leather and willow is now mixed with blood.
Bring it back! It is not yours. You will not be warned again. Mistresses' symbol is not for you to bear! Bring it back or face pain such as you've never imagined possible! With that, your wrists are released and the menace in the air is gone.
Janiries Shaelara |
Elven "You don't.. you don't scare me!"
Damn it, she could at least have said where I could take the symbol
Taking a few minutes to recover, she'd eventually get back to her feet and head quickly back to the camp.
Landon Crane |
Helm, what was that? Looking in Duvall's direction and whispering "Did you see a hanged man?" as he grabs his sword and shield leaving his blade unsheathed and in hand for the remainder of the night.
Duvall of Helm |
Helm, what was that? Looking in Duvall's direction and whispering "Did you see a hanged man?" as he grabs his sword and shield leaving his blade unsheathed and in hand for the remainder of the night.
"By the Watcher!" Duvall exclaims sitting bolt upright and looking around wildly. He barely hears Landon's question, but has the sense enough to respond. "Yes, I did...but I wish I had not."
He too takes his watch and leaves his weapon in hand the rest of the night.
Hezar |
Hezar will rise early, as always and check his snares taking liberty here, with that high survival role I had He returns with a few rabbits for breakfast, saving people the need to use their rations.
Sense Motive1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Noticing several of his companions are troubled.
Is something wrong? He asks generally.
Landon Crane |
"I'm not sure Hezar but something doesn't feel right. I sense that there is something far more sinister involved in our mission," he looks at Duvall, "something that Helm may be trying to warn us about."
Hezar |
Anyone else notice anything last night? I saw nothing out of the ordinary. He smiles at Elur.
DM Locke |
Third watch passes uneventfully and the sun rises into a clear sky, though to the east - your destination - the clouds seem to be gathering.
A dark omen, notes Marius, skinning one of the rabbits from Hezar's snares. It is as if all things evil gravitated to that small village. I'm not looking forward to going there. Tethys sits outside the circle of the camp, noisily devouring a fox that he caught.
You're still about 50 miles from Tilver's Folly; the Stendar estate is a little closer and south of the road. You'd likely be able to reach either destination by nightfall, if you're willing to push your horses a bit.
Duvall of Helm |
"I'm not sure Hezar but something doesn't feel right. I sense that there is something far more sinister involved in our mission," he looks at Duvall, "something that Helm may be trying to warn us about."
"Indeed, my brother. A warning or vision in our dreams - a hanged man, green fire, and a crown. Did you have bad dreams too, Janiries?"
Duvall's stomach grumbles loudly at the smell of cooked rabbit and helps himself to a thigh with a hard tack biscuit. "Much obliged, Hezar."
You cook good rabbit, pilgrim.
Janiries Shaelara |
"Elves don't dream, Duvall."
Janiries would speak inbetween eating portions of her trail rations and a bit of the rabbit.
"No, I encountered a woman during the night, a woman who grabbed my wrists and demanded that I return her mistresses symbol, whatever that means. Regardless, we can have this conversation on the road.. if we hurry and ride hard, we should be able to reach the Stendar Estate or Tilver's Folly by nightfall."
As if to emphasis that point, she'd quickly finish her breakfast and get onto her horse.
Hezar |
Someone approached camp in the night and you did not alert us?
Hezar leaps up and does a quick check for tracks as soon as he gets that bit of info.
Survival 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
No tracks that I can find.
Hezar mounts up and takes the lead again.
PErception1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Janiries Shaelara |
"No one approached camp, she was a distance away when I encountered her, and she disappeared swiftly, at a guess magically, after our 'meeting'
And before you ask, I did mention to Belgrin that I had heard something and was moving to check it out. The woman's threat wasn't an immediate one, so I didn't think it necessary to wake the camp."
Hezar |
Hezar nods.
Curious happenings. Well I wanted adventure.
Hezar |
Hezar stops what he is doing, and looks at Ariael.
Duvall of Helm |
"Hezar's right, Janiries - you should have told someone in camp about this woman. The woman could have been a follower of the Maiden of Pain, like the slavers. If so, she is a threat, immediate or no."
After that, Duvall says little else; instead he rides ahead silently.
Belgrin Stoneshield |
"Aye, we'll leave the dreamin' and omens to the dreamers and fortune-tellers. If we reach the estate by evenin, we'll have a good position for the next day, be able to inform the landowners, and maybe, if we're fortunate, have a chance ta sleep indoors for the night. Let's ride."
Belgrin punctuates his point by popping his logbook shut after the morning entry and stuffing it into his pack.
