Bolus: You see two Guardians wearing open-faced helmets like yours in the pilot's seats of the other skyskipper. Neither of them feel any more evil than Olivius or Eldar.

Dambreth: The symbol has no overt religious connections, though the halo + crown of thorns imagery has connections to sacrifice and divinity, with the added overtones of Death from the skull. That's all you can reason out.

Olivius grabs the mic and responds with a good portion of truth sprinkled with a bit of a lie in the hopes that everything sounds nice and vague, but credible, Delivering a private message to the dwarves and hoping to trade.

Another message over the PA. "You are operating a skyskipper that was reported stolen an hour ago from the Central Observatory. Land your skipper and exit the vehicle!"

"I do not sway the mind of men" he answers the question of the Light Warrior

-Posted with Wayfinder

Hardworthy gulps and takes the skyskipper down to the surface below. The Guardians follow you down, their warning lights keeping you illuminated. You land in a rocky area of the hills, in a small clearing on the base of the hillside just big enough for your two skippers to land comfortably.

The professor gestures at the door to the skyskipper, beckoning you outside. Meanwhile, the Guardian's windshield opens up and they climb out, batons held loosely in their hands. There are three Guardians in total, dressed just like Bolus and with sunglasses covering their eyes.

"Yeah, that's him," one of the Guardians says, pointing at you, Bolus. Their mouths are set grimly and their postures are tense and defensive.

Bolus would be the first one out. Gesturing to the Prof to stay where he is and to the others to hide and sneak around if they think they're able to he climbs out to face his former brothers and sisters in arms commanding their attention.

Does he recognize any of them?

Yeah. Me. Guessing you've got a problem with that?

Elf Cleric Lvl 3 XP 3 Armor 0 HP 14/18

Dambreth climbs out of the skyskipper and makes sure the other Guardians can see that his hands are empty and moving casually moves to stand near Bolus in case the situation deteriorates.

Eldar will stay just inside. He knows his appearance might provoke the guards to attack

The Guardian in front glances around at the other two, a male and a female, behind him, and removes his sunglasses. "We don't, but we're in the minority. You should consider yourselves lucky that it's us that found you. By now, everyone has heard Temellen's version of events and, added to the stolen 'skipper, well, it puts you in an uncomfortable position."

"But I've heard of you, Bolus. You rescued my friend a year ago, and almost lost your life in the process. I've never come to know you myself, but the man who rescued Antivo Flores just doesn't line up with the monster that elf is depicting."

Bolus, the details of your heroic rescue and near-death are up to you.

"I stopped you so I could warn you. Temellen knows the location of the other artifact in the Stonespire Mountains. He's convinced the High Command to prepare an ambush."

Bolus tries not to show it but he sags with relief Antivo hasn't retired yet? Hah tough old bastard. Not every day you get swallowed by a rock worm trying to burrow into the city. We got each other through that, no mistake.
The he gets serious Thanks for watching out for us. We're heading out to destroy a beacon that's been causing a lot of destruction. What's this about Temellen and a second artifact? And do you know where that slimy bastard is? I've got a lot of scores to settle with that evil piece of scum.

Not sure if I missed something about artifacts in the Stonespire Mountains

Human Thief 5 XP: 5| HP: 15/15. | Armor: 1 Golden root x2; Acidic Fire bombs x10; mutant armor potion x1 | Str: 9 (+0) Dex: 18 (+3) Con: 9 (+0) Int: 16 (+2) Wis: 12 (+0) Cha: 13 (+1) | [Current Effects:]

Olivius stays hidden even when the guardian's prove to be not immediately hostile. Best not introduce any surprises.

Sorry Bolus I wasn't clear. When the Guardian - his nametag reads Cortes - said "the other" artifact, the FIRST artifact I was referring to was the one that you and Temellen investigated in your backstory that sent you back in time to the island. The other artifact is the one you're going to now with Gaia's Hand.

Cortes shakes his head. "I don't know where he is. I was there when he arrived in the city, but he was ushered behind closed doors quite quickly that day, and from then on orders were issued to us by comm." he taps the comlink on his shoulder.

"All I know is that they're deploying some heavy machinery to the Stonespire Mountains. There was a convoy of fliers headed up there a little while ago. All the Guardians are instructed to be on the alert for a flier matching that description." he nods in the direction of Hardworthy's skipper.

"It looks grim," he continues, crossing his arms. "Whatever you did to Temellen, he's got the entire city riled up in arms against you. We're here to even the odds a little." He hands you a comlink unit to replace your malfunctioning one, standard issue, and gives you a frequency.

"We're going to be patrolling the area around Stonespire and we'll provide you with aerial intel as we receive it. We're going to have to pretend to still be following orders, though, so we can't let the other Guardians see us helping you."

Elf Cleric Lvl 3 XP 3 Armor 0 HP 14/18

Is the artifact the same thing as the beacon? Dambreth thinks to himself all the while standing near Bolus and trying to appear non-threatening.

Ah right, makes sense that this one is being protected by the tribe while the first one was just hard to get to. Would Bolus know what happened to the first beacon/artifact? Did it get taken out or do we have two beacons to destroy?

You saw the first beacon - the one that sent you back in time - was destroyed when the rift was opened. Temellen and the other Mimics used the energy of the portal - accidentally - to travel back in time.

Sorry for my radio silence yesterday/Tuesday! Back now! :)

"Agreed, let us move, Time will not wait for us"

Elf Cleric Lvl 3 XP 3 Armor 0 HP 14/18

Aye Bolus. Time to be off.

Cortes nods firmly at you, Bolus. You notice the other Guardians behind him glancing at one another, before nodding, albeit somewhat more hesitantly. You'd guess that they have less reason to trust you because they don't know someone that you personally rescued, but they seem mostly willing to follow Cortes' lead.

Professor Hardworthy lets out a whoosh of air as you climb back into the 'skipper. "That never happened to my recollection. The timeline is already different. Sure is nice to have friends in high places, eh?" he grins cheekily at Eldar, and his grin quickly fades when he looks upon the grim elven warrior for too long. He glances at Dambreth, his eyebrows raised up high. "Yes, well, *cough*, let's get going," the old man says, spinning up the skipper's engines.

Your flight to the "rendezvous" point is uneventful. Cortes' skillful piloting soon takes him out of visual contact, but you sense that he's still there.

You arrive at Harrigan's Rise. The butte stands alone among the foothills, rising far higher and narrower than any geographical feature surrounding it. That would make it stand out by itself, but there's also a dwarven door built into the base. You don't see a soul as you come into visual range. "Where do you want to do this?" the Professor asks.

Human -2/12; WS 35;BS 27;S 34;T 32; Agi 31; Int 27; Per 26;WP 32; Fel 53; Fate 0/2; Insanity 20

Assuming there's a path for scavengers to get up the rise and then back down

We don't want to spook them, we want to be visible. So just land on the top near the descent. Olivius you should probably take the lead you look like someone who wants to do business. I'll stay in the skip and come out if needed. Try to find out what you can about the artifact and the dwarves.

If Bolus knows how much explosives should cost then he'll relay that to the group

Elf Cleric Lvl 3 XP 3 Armor 0 HP 14/18

Dambreth wanders around the top of the butte, metal staff in hand as he awaits the scavengers. He enjoys imagining different horrible ways to destroyTemellen but then remembers his vow as a cleric of Gaia to not take a life. Of course, I did not vow to heal the little dung beetle if someone else cuts him to pieces.

Olivius accepts his position of negotiator and double checks his weapons, just in case. Then he jumps out of the skipper to await the Scavengers.

Hardworthy nods and angles the skipper lower until you're hovering directly above the top of the tall rocky hill, near the downslope that leads down the steep path to the dwarven door at the bottom. From this height you can see for miles around, even seeing Terminus City off in the distance. Indeed, Terminus is one of the only good things to look at. Much of the rest of the landscape is a blasted waste, rent with purple energy that pulses and crackles unpredictably.

Turning your gaze back to the mountain pass, you see nobody coming as of right now. You recall that Harrigan's Rise was the second-to-last major landmark in their journey to Terminus City, so they are likely to still be further up the path.

You settle in to wait, a strange creature approaches you along the mountain pass up the butte. It looks like a small lizard, like a skink or a gecko, but you see a red light coming from its eye. Scurrying from rock to rock but making no effort to remain unseen, it clambers up the path toward the skipper.

Human -2/12; WS 35;BS 27;S 34;T 32; Agi 31; Int 27; Per 26;WP 32; Fel 53; Fate 0/2; Insanity 20

Magic or some sort of dwarf work? Bolus asks the Professor. If caravans make it through here then it's got to be safe right?

Olivius calls back to the skipper, Uhh, Bolus, how worried should I be about a small lizard with red eyes. Say, on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 equals fluffy bunnies and 10 equals Dragon?

"Looks like dwarf tech," Hardworthy comments, standing up in the pilot's seat to look out the windshield at the lizard. "They commonly fashion their tech to resemble local wildlife. They're probably curious about us."

Elf Cleric Lvl 3 XP 3 Armor 0 HP 14/18

Hearing the commotion, Dambreth turns back to the others. Seeing the lizard, he begs Gaia for divine guidance...Oh Gaia...your humble servant beseeches you to provide a sign if the yon creature is a source of danger to our holy quest

Considering scav caravans come through here. I'd say 2. Prof can you speak Dwarf if need be?

What here is evil? Bolus mutters to himself.

Human Thief 5 XP: 5| HP: 15/15. | Armor: 1 Golden root x2; Acidic Fire bombs x10; mutant armor potion x1 | Str: 9 (+0) Dex: 18 (+3) Con: 9 (+0) Int: 16 (+2) Wis: 12 (+0) Cha: 13 (+1) | [Current Effects:]

Olivius relaxes slightly, meaning he doesn't draw weapons or run and hide.

Dambreth and Bolus, neither of you sense evil from this strange creature approaching you. Dambreth, you sense no impending wounds that the party may suffer; Bolus, the closest thing to an evil thing for miles is the vile way the sunlight keeps getting in your eyes as the sun moves across the sky.

The lizard-mech climbs directly onto the front windshield of the skyskipper, bold as brass. You can see its body stuck to the outer windshield by textured pads on its feet, like those of a true lizard, but when it angles its face to peer inside, you see that it is not a true lizard at all. The red light you saw coming from its eye was only part of the picture; half the lizard's face is metallic, and the eye - which rotates independently of its eye socket, like that of a chameleon - focuses on each of you in turn with a telescopic focusing lens. Looking into its red eye, you can see multiple small lasers rotating and twisting within as it regards you. Its other eye, seemingly biological, seems unperturbed.

It turns its head and presses the tip of its robotic eye to the windshield of the skyskipper.

Human -2/12; WS 35;BS 27;S 34;T 32; Agi 31; Int 27; Per 26;WP 32; Fel 53; Fate 0/2; Insanity 20

Seems half meat. Sinathel, can you talk to it?

Suddenly, a beam of light emitted from the robotic eye of the lizard clinging to the windshield beams into the main compartment of the skyskipper. Yala screams in fright and Hardworthy jumps back in surprise, but the light doesn't vaporize you all or anything of the sort.

Instead, the light focuses on a single spot, and more lights from the eye join it, until it coalesces into an image. A dwarf, wearing fine armor and a full helm that covers all but his beard, suddenly stands before you in the skyskipper cabin. On the windshield, if you look closely, you see strange openings in the lizard's toes that begin vibrating to make sound. "That's not going to be necessary, Guardian," the tinny, robotic voice of the sentry says, as the dwarf stands in front of you, looking you up and down. "I can speak for myself. What's your business at Harrigan's Gate?"

Human -2/12; WS 35;BS 27;S 34;T 32; Agi 31; Int 27; Per 26;WP 32; Fel 53; Fate 0/2; Insanity 20

Not officially a Guardian anymore but one in spirit, sir Bolus says straightening and snapping to military mode now that he's in the presence of someone who seems to have some authority. We are seeking to intercept a trading convoy of scavengers to trade for explosives and any other supplies that will be helpful in our primary objective. Bolus pauses here but realizes that he's not giving away any Terminus military secrets by being open. Our primary objective is to assault and destroy some sort of time distorting artifact... beacon... thing. We've already destroyed one of 'em. The Professor here may be able to give you more details on it. Alls I know is that it's being protected by some very evil people and that it's bad news for anyone who isn't.

Elf Cleric Lvl 3 XP 3 Armor 0 HP 14/18

Dambreth looks at the dwarf and tries to remember what he's heard about the relationship of the dwarven people to clerics of Gaia (the earth itself)

Spout Lore: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2...Okay...going to go ahead and mark an XP for that one

"Time distorting artifact?" the dwarf hologram comments, in a slow voice.

Hardworthy gulps. "Er, yes. It's an, uh, unstable isotope of a radioactive material that distorts the local timeline. We're going to prevent it from...falling into the wrong hands..." the Professor's voice falters as the hologram of the dwarf stares hard at him, the bearded face obscured and unreadable, and the old man falls silent.

Dambreth, you joined the fold of Gaia's Clerics only recently. In your past life as a ranger, you tended to avoid the company of dwarves. Regardless of their feelings toward the Earth Goddess, your two races rarely saw eye-to-eye in your experience. He hasn't acknowledged your presence since being projected inside the skipper, turning his armored head solely from Bolus to the Professor and back to Bolus.

"Sounds dangerous..." the dwarf says, and his tone is equally dangerous. "Thank you for your information. We will permit you to conduct your trade on our doorstep. Make no attempt to approach the door to Harrigan's Rise or be obliterated." The hologram winks out, the light receding back to the projector in the lizard's robotic eye.

Professor Hardworthy slumps in his chair and covers his eyes.

Well that went fine. Why so stressed Prof?

Hardworthy shakes his head, still covering his eyes. "That dwarf made me nervous. I wish I could've seen his face. I know a few dwarves in this area, but not him, judging by the voice. It's...fine. Don't worry."

A sudden pinging on the helm of the skyskipper breaks him out of his reverie. He spins around in the pilot's seat and taps a button on the control panel, bringing up a view from the skipper's external camera. There's a caravan approaching from the direction of the mountains, matching the description Olivius discovered. What do you do?

Eldar follows suit, avoiding contact, not wanting to start a fight just because he looks... not like the normal ones. But like the rest, he is ready should a fight brake out

The caravan approaches up the rise, and you see the driver watching you warily. The man operating the small caravan of trucks is wearing an oversized gas mask, with no canister attached. When the three trucks reach the top of the rise, near your skipper, the lead truck stops. The other two trucks pull up alongside, their engines idling. The first truck's engine cuts; the other two follow suit.

For a moment there's nothing from the caravans; you can see the three drivers studying you from behind their windshields. The trucks look battered, like they should have fallen apart decades ago but were held together by jury-rigged materials and grit. The weapons mounted atop each truck look fully functional, however. Each truck has a gunner with the mounted cannons ready - thankfully, it seems, not immediately pointed in your direction.

A few tense moments pass, and the driver door of the lead truck opens. A tall scavenger, wearing wastelander's garb and a wide-brimmed hat over his gas mask, regards you for a moment. What do you do?

Olivius spreads his hands to show he isn't armed (*snicker*) and says, Just here to trade. I hear you have explosives, and I have a need for something to explode.

The scavenger approaches you with a slow, confident stride, his arms swinging at his sides according to his gait. Behind the goggles of his gas mask, you can't read his eyes, but you hear a small chuckle from behind the mask.

He stands before you, within arm's reach, breathing steadily through the mask and staring down at you, Olivius. A few tense moments go by.

Olivius:
You see, down by his right hand, a near-imperceptible twitch of the fingers, in a fluctuating pattern. Your eyes widen unconsciously when you recognize the motion from your days in your own home city - the cant of thieves, the secret language of rogues, has been preserved through the centuries to this very day! Tell us an interesting fact about the rogue's cant, if you please.

No trouble, the scavenger signs, presumably to the other drivers watching you from their trucks nearby.

Before you can react, the tense moment is broken. The tall scavenger moves toward you suddenly, but not to shiv you - he holds out his hand to shake. He finally speaks. "I'm Hogan. Pleased to meet you, Mr..."
