Hawke checking in.

Scarab Sages

Ok, I haven't even started Character creation yet, so it'll be at least tonight, perhaps tomorrow before I can post in gameplay. I only have a rough idea of my character and I read the entire SRD (except GM stuff) last night. Please bear with me. :)

I'm not rushing you guys at all - I hope it doesn't seem that way! I just get really eager sometimes, especially at the genesis of a new campaign. We'll all be patient with each other as we familiarize ourselves with the rules. I've played this game in an IRL one-shot and also as a player in a longer-term campaign, but never DMed one, so I'm in new territory as well. However, I feel confident that I'll be able to DM this game quite nicely, as the ruleset is very much aligned with my way of thinking.

One other thing I wanted to note is posting requirements. I know 4/5 of you at least are used to my posting requirement of once a day, but I'm relaxing that for this campaign; I don't want it to feel like a job, and there are some days where you just can't find the time (my weekend days are often like this). Just post as often and as regularly as you can and that'll be just fine. It's also courteous to let us know of planned absences.

Now that that administrative stuff is out of the way, back to planning my monastery/dungeon...

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

I tend to post quite frequently throughout the day on weekdays. Helps keep me sane throughout the week, but I do tend to be away during the weekends.

As for the monastery, I'm just waiting for you to give us the go ahead because I see Hawke walking straight up and telling them to get out of his way. He's on important business and he has no time to deal with them.

Aslo, can I assume we upped the number of Metal Tubes and Cloaks we found?

Yeah, you guys found enough for each of you. :)

Just giving Olivius some time to finish up his character and bonds and we could probably jump right in after that, the druid and ranger profiles look pretty complete to me. I only invited Choon to join us yesterday, so he's gotta play a little catch-up.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

No worries, I'm just excited to get started. I actually think I might have played in one of Choon's games at some point.

I've also updated Hawke's gear to include his Snow Elf Cloak and Metal Breathing Tube. I'll take it that someone else is carrying the Immovable Rod. If you decide you would prefer Hawke carries it for some reason, I am fine with that. I just need to be informed so that I can add it to his sheet.

We'll say you volunteered to carry it unless someone else wants to. Hawke seems the type to volunteer for that kind of responsibility.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

Very well. He does have a good armor rating and the highest hit points, so I suppose that works out mechanically as well. I'm kind of wondering if we are going to have to use it to keep a portal open.

Or maybe the portals will be up in the air and we'll have to use the immovable rod as a boost to get through them.

You'll see, if you survive. ^_^

Female Elf Druid 3 | XP: 7 | HP: 19/19 | Armor: 1 | Str: +1 Dex:+0 Con: +1 Int: +0 Wis: +3 Cha: -1

Good to cross your path again Choon. Wonder how many "prophecies" we'll come across. :)

I'll get the profile for my alias filled out. ^^ (and see if I can find an avi that suits her)

Then we should get some broad strokes for things that happened while we retrieved things ^^

Oh right, you were Itzal in my evil bodysnatchers campaign too. Small world!

Elf Cleric Lvl 3 XP 3 Armor 0 HP 14/18

As Dambreth stares at the guards outside the monastery he can't help but think back to the last month working with this motley crew. The time observing the others have in same cases solidified his initial impressions and in other cases have completely changed his view.

Sinathel - he both trusts and honors his cousin. Her bond to nature astounds him and he's more than a bit jealous that she can change her shape into so many types of animals. She can also understand what his best friend Scram is saying with his growls - how wonderful. Even if she wasn't his cousin, she is is a friend of nature, so he would be her friend as well.

Hawke - initially, Dambreth disliked the human both for his race and his attitude. However, he has come to realize that the gruff exterior hides an honorable spirit. The fact that they have been able to work together so well in combat with Hawke engaging a foe in melee allowing Dambreth to strike from a distance is another point in his favor. Finally, to seal the good impression, Dambreth has seen Hawke slipping Scram choice pieces of meat. That being said Hawke does not understand life in the wild, so I will teach him.

Si-Yi - Dambreth has conflicted feelings about the barbarian. The fact that he's a fellow elf (even though with very different customs) is a point in his favor, however his appetites for power make Dambreth uneasy as it is completely opposite to his own views. Dambreth acknowledges the fighting skill of the man but has not developed the teamwork with him as he has with Hawke. He also has an amazingly bad sense of direction for an Elf. Dambreth feels that having to set the big man on the right path several times that the barbarian owes him.

Olivius - Dambreth has not yet formed a strong opinion of the thief Waiting until his profile is up...however, being a nobleman the bond will likely either be _______________ has no respect for nature, so I have no respect for them or _______________ does not understand life in the wild, so I will teach them.

Male Elf Barbarian 2 HP: 20/20 XP: 2

Just realized that I forgot a bond for Dambreth.

"_______________ is always getting into trouble—I must protect
them from themselves" Would probably fit at least somewhat. Not that he necessarily is getting himself into troble, it's enough that Si-Yi thinks so. :P

And I think that Si-Yi might get along well with the thief... After all, one of his appetites is "Riches and propety". :D

And I have an alias! I even found a good picture fast!

Yep ^^ It is a small world. To bad that game died. It was fun.

Yeah, that's important to note actually! It's almost a good thing if your bond is a mistaken first impression - that makes it easy for your fellow players to disprove the bad first impression and resolve the bond.

Dambreth, I love the amount of thought put into that writeup, well done. I'm glad you decided to join us.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

I enjoyed reading through your in depth explanations of how Dambreth feels about each of our party members. I think I'll try my hand at it. If nothing else, it gives me a chance to try and improve my writing capabilities through practice.

Let's see, we'll start with Sinathel and go in order of when he met each of his new team mates.

Combat is also handled somewhat differently in DW. There's no initiative - battle happens as a conversation between the DM and players rather than by waiting your turn. This means that combat, and this game in general, is going to favor quick-responding posters.

I'll try to keep it fair for everyone since I know a few of us (like Hawke and I) post 300 times a day, and some others don't have the time for that. Just know that I have that in mind and we'll keep it as fair as possible. I'm keeping an eye on how it functions within a PbP campaign and if necessary I can make some houserule changes.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

Sinathel - Hawke understands little of the natural world and thusly little of what comes out of the druid's mouth. None the less, those around him assure him that she played a vital role in bringing him back from the brink of death. While this fact does not sit well with Hawke, for he believes he should have been left to die, he is a man that repays his debts. Thusly, he has agreed to join Gaia's Hand and serve it's cause until he feels he has done enough to repay his debts to both Sinathel and Brother Thimblewinter.

Over the last month, Hawke has come to understand that Sinathel is more than well-versed in the ways of the natural world, but holds an innate ability to shift her form into that of various animals. Despite this fact, he still thinks that she might be making things up when she tells the party what Scram, Dambreth's overly large cat, is trying to say.

Next up will be Dambreth.

This is the currently empty alias. I'll be working on it today, but I thought I'd throw this up.

Summarized backstory:

Olivius Telraven was born almost last among many magically and mundanely talented siblings. He suffered a mild form of neglect from his parents and older siblings growing up as a result. He could never be good enough. As a result, became more familiar with the staff than his own family. This infuriated his father, who is a powerful wizard and noble in his own right. Olivius was sent to a school for the military sciences where he failed to satisfy his father's lofty expectations.
He escaped from the prison of a school and has been running from his father's hired assassins (who's job it is to "clean up" the stain on his father's name) ever since. He has learned quickly that a sticky palm is much preferable to an empty stomach.

I didn't even think about how combat would be handled and I'll try not to get too overly anxious and kill everything, or die trying to kill everything, before anyone else gets a chance to act. :p

On a more serious note, I could see that working out well. I kind of seeing Hawke being rather quick to rush into combat. At least for a bit longer.

Nice, Olivius. Good opportunities for plot hooks with your father's assassins written in there, well done.

I'm also chuckling imagining Hawke being so skeptical of Sinathel's beast-speech. Bet she's making it all up, he thinks to himself...heheheh.

Male Elf Barbarian 2 HP: 20/20 XP: 2

By the way, if it seems like Si-Yi doesn't have much of a backstory, it is because of the barbarian's race ability.

You may be elf, dwarf, halfling, or human, but you and your people
are not from around here. At the beginning of each session, the GM
will ask you something about your homeland, why you left, or what
you left behind. If you answer them, mark XP.

So I figured that I'll just let you ask and come up with stuff as it's needed. Saves me a lot of trouble. :D If you want something more to work with, tell me and I shall ignore you dutifully obey.

Sure Si-Yi, it makes sense and it's kind of baked into the barbarian class to be mysterious. Tell you what, go into more detail about what your comrades would have noticed about you over the past month and how you came to be signed up with them, and we'll call it good for now.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

Scram - Hawke's first encounter with Scram came one evening shortly after having awoken from his extended slumber. Still bedridden, he awoke one night to find that some kind of beast had made it's way into his room. With a few loud shouts, he scared the beast from his room, but not before getting a clear view of it's eyes. The next day, he came to realize that the food he had barely touched the day before was now gone.

He would not see the beast again until the day he met Dambreth. At first he failed to recognize the beast, which was not overly surprising considering he had been unable to make out anything more than the beast's eyes the night it broke into his room to steal the food from his neglected plate. However, upon catching a glance at the beast's eyes he came to realize they had met once before.

When the group initially set out on their quest, Hawke kept a keen eye on his plate around the beast. However, over time he grew to respect the beast for it's loyalty to it's master and while he would still blatantly call it an overly large house cat in front of everyone else, he started secretly feeding Scram his scraps when he thought no one was looking.

Dambreth - Dambreth is one of the first people that Hawke came to meet after having recovered enough to be allowed out of his bed by Brother Thimblewinter, despite his many attempts to leave. His first impression of the lithe elf was that he could use to put some meat on his bones. His second was that Dambreth was an awkward boy jealous of anyone that Sinathel showed any interest in, an impression he would later come to understand was a misunderstanding on his part.

Over the course of the month that they have been travelling together, he has come to realize that while Dambreth is indeed awkward around most people, he is not the jealous type. Instead, he is merely protective of his cousin and wary of those that might bring her harm. In combat, he has come to realize that Dambreth is rather skilled with a bow, having often found his intended prey struck down by an arrow before he could reach them. None-the-less, he still believes that Dambreth could use to gain some more muscle and learn how to use an axe, or at least a larger sword.

Next up is Si-Yi.

Yeah, I find it amusing to think Hawke is constantly back there thinking Sinathel is making stuff up when she tries to tell the group what she has learned from the animals around them.

Nice writeup Hawke. This is laying the groundwork for some really great RP once we get into the game.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

Si-Yi - Hawke's first encounter with Si-Yi would be as they all gathered together to set out on their quest to find a rod incapable of being moved, an item he found almost as ridiculous as the barbarian himself. Standing a few inches taller than Hawke, he appeared to be made of pure muscle and carried a greatsword upon his back. Yet, despite this fact, he wore jewelry that suited a woman and the clothes of a beggar. Hawke felt very little need to get to know most people at this point, yet he felt even less need to get to know this man.

As Hawke travelled with the stranger over the course of the next month, he came to realize that Si-Yi was a brute of a man that found comfort in reassuring himself that he was better than everyone else. Even upon being saved by one of his comrades, Si-Yi still refused to thank his saviour. Instead he would simply assure them that if they had the capability of saving him, than he surely could have lived through such an ordeal without their aid. With that thought in mind, Hawke promised himself to let the next boulder crush the man. The experience might kill him, but if he survived the ordeal he might learn a lesson about humility and repaying his debts.

Olivius is the up next.

Based off what we have wrote so far, I could see Hawke going one of two routes if we manage to make it up to the point of choosing new classes. He'll either continue to be grim and keep throwing himself into danger in hopes of killing himself at the hands of a worthy enemy by going Barbarian or he'll find a purpose once more in protecting those around him from harm and become a Paladin and shift to a good alignment.

Keep in mind the Multiclass Dabbler advanced move that you can earn from levels 2-6. If your character's alignment shifts or his fighting style changes, you can reflect that by picking up a Paladin or Barbarian move, way before level 11.

I actually already had plans for that. I see him getting a bit more dark before he makes it back to the light if he winds up deciding to go that way.

Also, these bonds might take some work make fit.

I stole something from _______________.

_______________ has my back when things go wrong.

_______________ knows incriminating details about me.

_______________ and I have a con running.

You get everything under starting moves.

Yep, you get Trap Expert, Poisoner, Tricks of the Trade, Backstab and Flexible Morals, as well as the basic moves everyone gets.

As for your bonds, they do have the potential for getting you into trouble, but if you wanted to stay out of trouble, you shouldnt've become a Thief. ;) Talk with your teammates to work out what bonds would make the most sense - some of them require cooperation, the last two especially.

Not Summarized backstory:

Olivius Telraven was born to a minor noble house in the countryside as the fifth skilled son among many talented daughters. Needless to say, most everyone overlooked him, but not enough to ignore when he broke the rules. It seemed that the only time he got any attention was when he was breaking something, saying something wrong, or making something disappear. He tried his best to fit in, but he always lived in his older siblings' shadows. In time he learned to just stay out of sight, so he took to a life of quiet, hard work. He even counted some of the servants as his close friends.

Eventually this "solicitation with the common rabble" was discovered, much to the shame of his parents. His father was especially irate. He was immediately shipped off to the Rubis Academy of Military Science where he took a keen interest in the magical arts. However, his father's influence followed him even there, and he was forced into martial training. He loathed the academy, mostly because he saw his father in each of his commander's eyes. They all expected more. Always more. After months of training and refining his forms to perfection, he received an "adequate" grading. He was furious. No matter what he did, it was never enough. He ran away from the school at his first opportunity.

From there he floated, scrimped, stole, and generally dove head long into the wrong side of the Watch just to survive. It was here he realized just how talented his family was. He easily picked up on the life of a thief and learned to use his natural charisma to his advantage.

He also grew very familiar and adept at watching his back for pursuing agents of his Father. He has been officially exiled, or so the assassins have said before he dispatched them. His father is seeking to remove the stain of a prodigal son from his record. When not planning his next big score or picking dinner money off fat merchants, he is usually experimenting in magic and alchemy. His dream of Magedom has never left him, though he seems to be more talented toward mundane pursuits.

Ok, lots of moves it it. Good thing I put my 15 in Dex. Looks like I'll be using the Avoid Danger move a lot. :)

The great thing about Defy Danger is that you can use any stat you want, provided it makes sense for the situation. Sometimes you Defy Danger by dodging and ducking, sure - that's DEX. But say you're cornered by a superior force and they're getting ready to attack you, and you want to talk them down Diplomancer style, that would be roll+CHA for Defy Danger.

Love the backstory. I can relate to the problem of never satisfying expectations. Now we just need bonds and your connection to the Hand of Gaia.

Thanks for jumping in with both feet. Makes me glad that you're basically caught up with the rest of us on character creation - I think you'll acclimatize to this system pretty nicely.

Also curious as to your alignment. Sounds pretty chaotic to me. Chaotic thieves are pretty hilarious - "Charge headlong into danger without a plan. Gain XP."

Human Thief 5 XP: 5| HP: 15/15. | Armor: 1 Golden root x2; Acidic Fire bombs x10; mutant armor potion x1 | Str: 9 (+0) Dex: 18 (+3) Con: 9 (+0) Int: 16 (+2) Wis: 12 (+0) Cha: 13 (+1) | [Current Effects:]

Just some initial thoughts for my bonds:

I stole something from __Dambreth__.
He left it (no idea what) out in the open. How could I not?

___Hawk__ has my back when things go wrong.
Because we are the most similar?

__Sinthel___ knows incriminating details about me.
She saw me steal something while she was shifted and I didn't realize it was a person watching me.

__Si-Yi__ and I have a con running.
He's not as uncivilized as he seems. He's still uncivilized, but not completely new to concepts such as cheating everyone out of as much coin as possible.

Human Thief 5 XP: 5| HP: 15/15. | Armor: 1 Golden root x2; Acidic Fire bombs x10; mutant armor potion x1 | Str: 9 (+0) Dex: 18 (+3) Con: 9 (+0) Int: 16 (+2) Wis: 12 (+0) Cha: 13 (+1) | [Current Effects:]

No problem. This one is easier than, say, Pathfinder to jump into.

I agree on the alignment. This guy is very much in flux right now. I'm changing to chaotic. Not that anyone with Detect magic will see me as anything other than Good. ;)

Female Elf Druid 3 | XP: 7 | HP: 19/19 | Armor: 1 | Str: +1 Dex:+0 Con: +1 Int: +0 Wis: +3 Cha: -1

I likely saw you steal that item from Dambreth.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

It could be that you stole from Hawke as well. Depending in when your character made his appearance in the Druid camp you could have stole from him while he was unconscious. Could be that Sinathel saw you at that time as well. She could have been shifted while keeping an eye in Hawke while he recovered.

Human Thief 5 XP: 5| HP: 15/15. | Armor: 1 Golden root x2; Acidic Fire bombs x10; mutant armor potion x1 | Str: 9 (+0) Dex: 18 (+3) Con: 9 (+0) Int: 16 (+2) Wis: 12 (+0) Cha: 13 (+1) | [Current Effects:]

But then who has my back? Every thief needs a getaway driver. :)

As for Gaia, I once lifted the shoes clean off a powerful cleric just outside the government center. I was posing as a shoe shiner and got lucky enough for him to sit at my stool.
He was half way down the block before he stepped in a pile of manure and realized he was shoe-less. I was long gone, naturally. He must have remembered.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

Considering Hawke's hatred for bandits, I doubt he would be happy with a thief.

Si-Yi seems far more likely to have your back than Hawke, I have to agree. Hawke seems the very Lawful type, probably won't appreciate your talents much.

There's something to be said for NOT having that bond with anyone, and believing that nobody in the party has your back. That leaves the bond open to be picked up later, after you've had more dangerous experiences together.

Another idea: Perhaps Hawke DOES have your back, but reluctantly. You did something significant to help him and now he feels he owes YOU a debt too, despite how much he hates that idea. And you know exactly how he thinks after a month of adventuring together, so you know he'll fulfill that debt, even if he hates your guts.

Fighter 3 | HP 19/26 | Armor 2 | XP 7

Could be he "acquired" an item of importance to him. In turn he could have given it back to Hawke knowing that Hawke would look for a way to repay him. That or he could be holding on to it for now waiting for the right time to use it.

I think that makes sense. That plays up the Thief's strengths, and sounds plausible. Could work as a bond if Olivius agrees or doesn't have a better idea.

Human Thief 5 XP: 5| HP: 15/15. | Armor: 1 Golden root x2; Acidic Fire bombs x10; mutant armor potion x1 | Str: 9 (+0) Dex: 18 (+3) Con: 9 (+0) Int: 16 (+2) Wis: 12 (+0) Cha: 13 (+1) | [Current Effects:]

Hmmm. Not really comfortable with blackmail. I may go with not bonding that yet, or go with Si-Yi having two of mine. If he agrees to run a con with me (against whom I don't know yet) then he is likely to also have my back.

The con doesn't have to be against a PC, either, keep in mind. You could be planning to con your local government, a regional power or even...gasp...the Hand of Gaia itself.

Scarab Sages

Maybe con Gaia later. We are lvl 1 after all. :)
