It is day, but the sky above Dalaston is dark as a moonless night. The town is burning — plumes of smoke rise from one quarter of the walled town. Perhaps the strangest thing is the stillness. There are no farmhands in the fields, no other travelers on the road, not even any refugees fleeing from what seems to be a disaster. Dalaston burns, and its citizens remain hidden within its ash-stained walls.

While you've never been to this place before, you're fairly certain that this isn't how the local world is supposed to be. About a week ago, you received a letter from Marita, an old friend who'd once helped you repair a nexus of energy that had been corrupting this world, and she'd had a very specific invitation for you.

In her previous letter to you as you traveled the worlds, Marita had mentioned that she was settling in eastern Taldor - a nation on one of the more magically active worlds of reality. Last week the following message arrived via magical sending: “Sorry it’s been so long. Getting married to Baydon Irini Sunday; please come. Day’s End Inn, Dalaston. Bring friends! —Marita.” The connection transmitted her presence, her happiness, and her desire to see you again.

Given the troubles in town, it may be best to enter without looking as frightening as usual (lookin' at you, Sashin).

Female Changeling Intrigue Oracle 3 (covetous curse)

Hey! I'm only frightening to the weak! But humaoid form is usually standard until combat breaks out, anyway.

Is this like, the start of gameplay? Do we just start? Or...?

This is indeed the start of gameplay, and you may begin posting immediately - you're outside of town and have yet to approach, giving you ample time to decide how and when to get closer and do anything you'd like to before you get started.

Female Changeling Intrigue Oracle 3 (covetous curse)

Alright, cool! Let's get this started!

Sashin is currently "wearing" her dhampir form, and very curious about what is happening in front of her.

"What kind of city burns without the citizens leaving? And aren't we here to see a wedding? I doubt the theme is flames and ashes."

"Hu, why not? Isn't it supposed to be "fire of passion" for many of these races? And ashes are great for the fertility of the ground they get their sustenance from. I would expect many of their weddings to have flames and ashes as theme! Then again I don't really understand how they can know they will want to stay with one certain, single person for all of their future so maybe you are right and that whole marriage stuff is just not something I can grasp."

Yin is casually fluttering alongside the others while thinking about how fire would be totally valid as a theme. Having mentioned the ground, and sustenance, she feels a slight hunger, and takes a quick detour towards the fields, looking for something edible.
Technically, she's checking if the fields we see are "ok", as in, were tended to until very recently, or if they show signs of neglect in the past days?

Mineire travels along the road in the driver's seat of a merchant's wagon. It is covered and enclosed by a variety of solid materials instead of the cloth that typically covers such. Most unusually, it travels with no animals, but under its own magical power. The driver wears the fine clothing of a well-to do merchant, his second set of arms crossed in the folds of his bulky robes. Only a set of goggled eyes protrude under heavy headdress and above a cloth mask protecting his lower face from view.

"Yes, emotion is a strange thing to put to contract."

Dot. Likely changing both name and avatar later, but I have my RL game tonight.

Barrett was riding in shotgun in the merchant's wagon. During the trip he had occupied himself with idle daydreaming. Once he spotted the smoke on the horizon he was brought abruptly back to reality. Seeing a homestead on fire threatened to bring painful memories to the surface.

"Keep a careful eye folks. Something 'bout this just ain't right..."

He starts giving a wary look to his surroundings.

Being adressed by Sashin, Yin thinks hard..."....is the answer.....No? But it's just a city, don't they build new ones all the time? Why do they need to do that if they don't burn down their old ones?"
Her race lives in huge permanent colonies, preferably in isolation, so yeah, she really does not grasp the concept
Puzzled, Yin dwells on that difficult thought experiment. "Oh, i know, they probably only burn down citys for important people, like for their leaders. Right? So it's probably some important persons idea that this City should burn? Do you think it's a friend of Marita that arranged this for her? Does anybody of you remember any friends of her that would be important enough?"
A background-check on Marita wouldn't hurt I guess. Anybody wanna try their luck? Also, friends is pretty general-

New map at the top of the page.

Closer to the town, signs of life emerge. Guards walk the walls, carrying torches to fight the gloom. What you can see beyond the gates reveals a few people hurrying along the street, eyes fixed on the ground. People wear strips of cloth wrapped around their lower faces, protection against the soot and smoke. The light flickering against the clouds and the rising fingers of smoke suggest that parts of the town are burning, but this damage is far from the main gate.

The gates of Dalaston themselves are mostly closed. Guards peer down from the ash-stained walls, their faces hidden behind the damp cloths worn to protect against the smoke. The choking smoke blocks out all sunlight, and light comes from torches set along the walls. A brighter light flickers against the sky, its source deep within the town; combined with the columns of smoke rising up behind the walls, it makes it apparent that there are still fires raging within Dalaston.

Three people stand in the arch of the gateway, blocking entry into the town path. Two of them are dwarf soldiers armed with halberds, their faces hidden behind goggles and damp cloth. The guards are flanking a young woman, a human who can’t be more than 15 years old. She isn’t wearing any sort of facial protection, or any armor of any sort; instead, she is dressed in what was once a fine gown, now spoiled by soot, sweat, and blood. Her skin, clothes, and hair are covered with ash, giving her a ghostly appearance. She holds a long scythe in her hands, and it still drips with the fresh blood of the man lying on the ground before her. Her eyes are pale white, as is her colorless flesh, and her face is completely devoid of emotion.

In addition to the guards on the ground, there are four guards with crossbows watching from the upper walls. You're also able to notice a number of crossbow bolts scattered across the plain beyond the wall, along with a few bloodstains half-hidden beneath the shifting ash; it appears that there was some fighting outside the gate. The guards show no immediate signs of hostility. Most are watching you as you approach, but you can tell that the guards don’t look inclined to attack. One of the two halberdiers pulls the peasant’s corpse to a cart at the side of the gate; the other stands next to the woman. As you approach, she says, "Continue on, travelers. Dalaston is no place for strangers."

Materializing from the shadows, as is often his habit, Zarrin strolls over to wagon. Its clear from his direction that he's come from within the city. "Its quite a mess inside. I'm unsure if Marita is here or not." He says quietly to Mineire.

Barrett furrows his brow in concern as the situation becomes increasingly bizarre.

"There's a handful more problems than just a wedding. She's a big girl, I'm sure she can hold her own. I'm more concerned for the folk inside."

"Guards: what's going on round here? Not often you see death on such a display."

pointing at the body on the floor.
"Maybe someone did something nasty inside and now they look for them?"

Yin curiously cocks her head, moves towards the girl and the dwarfs and observes the scene from several viewpoints.

The girl glanced towards Yin as she spoke. "The town is under curfew. You are indeed welcome to enter, but none are currently permitted to leave." she explained calmly. "There was a recent volcanic eruption in the area, and things will soon be back to normal - the curfew was put into place to prevent panic and is being strictly enforced. All will return to normal soon. If you wish to enter, do so quickly and get off of the streets."

The guard Mineire spoke to just glanced nervously towards the pale woman, clearly both unnerved and a little afraid to speak. She was the one in charge here, it seemed.

Yin beams at Sashin: "See, a volcano. Thats fire, and thats fertile ground. Must be a good sign for Marita! She's lucky."
Then she addresses the young girl: "Thanks for telling us. I'll take care not to touch any streets!"

Having said that, Yin flys higher and hovers over the wall, right in the middle of the crossbowman she ignores, trying to get a general look over the city, while waiting for the others to finish their conversations.
If there was significant volcanic activity in the city, or major damage, around where on the plan would be the most affected area? Between foundry and Temple of Abadar-area?

Unfortunately, it's rather difficult to see across all of the city - even with darkvision, the cloud of ash that hangs over the town has made it nearly dark (and thus limited the range of your sight), though there's a red glow to the northwest. Otherwise, what look to be Continual Flame spells line many of the streets inside, and the pale woman gives you directions to the Day's End Inn. It's just to the east along a major road once entering town - conveniently close to the entrance for the benefit of travelers.

The ash and smoke in the air is quite heavy, too.

Being in the town causes a -2 Circumstance penalty to all Strength and Dexterity-based skill checks. Anyone who doesn't need to breathe - or has ways of guarding their breathing system, however that may function for their particular body - is unaffected by this.

@known each other: Hey, I met you at the bar. We hung out at your cart for an indeterminate amount of time. Thats good enough for Yin.
But in all seriousness, if we are to be aquaintances of the same person in this city and travel together, I'd say chances are we do at least superficially know each other.

The town is a fairly sizable one - the best place to get information would probably be where you planned to meet up. Mineire guides his wagon to the Day's End Inn and dismounts. Waiting for other riders to do the same, he dissolves the wagon into a mass of glowing outlines, before trawing them onto a small scroll that he tucked back into his sleeve. He then enters the Inn.

Beneath the omnipresent ash, the walls of this inn are painted red and gold. The trade sign bears the image of a sun setting between two mountains, and the words “Day’s End — Inn and Public House.”

The common room is filled with a mass of people, ragged and filthy folk carrying sacks and blankets. It has the feel of a refugee camp — makeshift pallets are laid out in every corner of the room. A young man wearing a green cloak is tending to injuries; many in the crowd bear burns and contusions. A matronly woman in a green gown presses through the mob to the door. "Welcome to the Day’s End, travelers. I wish it were under better circumstances. Our resources are sorely limited, but how may I serve you?"

"Count Saleno is the leader of our town. He'd always been a hedonist, but..." she clenched her hands so tightly that her knuckles turned white. "After our mines were destroyed, the Count blamed the priests of Abadar, saying that it was their greed and wickedness that brought wrath down upon us. He started taking our children - two dozen of them, at first, and they returned as those... those pale things! Anyone who goes against the Count or tries to leave town becomes one of them. "So, someone around whom things become cold... is behind this volcanic ash?" Mineire pauses, and begins scribbling in the air, his finger a pen and pale blue-green light the ink. The writing in the air appears to be a line chart of his thoughts on the matter in the common trade language, with heavy smatterings of various languages where a particular language had a more appropriate word for a concept than the other languages.

"We have pieces of a puzzle... Abadar, or the temple thereof... The Count, and his inept rule... Eldran Tesh, whisperer to the ear of the Count... the bloodless... and the ash."
