Current date: The 4th day of Neth 4714 AR.

Once again the late autumn winds blow with the forecast of another cold winter for the hamlet town of Kessen. One hundred and seventy-eight years have passed since the first lighting ceremony of a lantern in memory of the town’s founder, Ekat Kessen. A small group of young, skilled townsfolk are called upon to journey to the Crypt of the Everflame. Once there, they need to light a lantern from the eternal flame located within its depths.
The day before your journey, Mayor Orfal, an elder dwarf summons a meeting with each member of the group, thanking you for your sacrifice to carry out this year’s ceremony and how much it means to the town. He says he will see you when the midday bell rings atop the Temple of Erastil. With that he tells you to get well rested for the journey is quite a trek from town.

Let me know what your character is doing the morning before the noon bell rings.

I wonder what he’s playing tonight… Mossri thinks. Last night she’d stayed at the Seven Silvers until the owner shut it down for the night, dancing as Jocyn played the string version of “Life Budding on Salted Earth”. Finishing up her morning chores on the farm, she walks toward Kassen and makes her way toward the Seven Silvers, beating a rhythm on her thigh with her tambourine.

As the barefoot, brown-haired halfling girl reaches the Seven Silvers, she remembers. Ayuh, right! I won’t be able to see what he’s playing tonight. Off to the crypt this afternoon, I am. Wonder who else is going with me, and if Jocyn will give me another dance lesson before I go.

She leaves her longspear and crossbow by the door. No one had ever taken a weapon before, and she’d been leaving them there for years. ”Jocyn here? Looking for another lesson this morning ‘fore I leave. I gots ta be my best for the quest!” Without waiting for a response, she climbs up into one of the human-sized barstools and sits, waiting for Jocyn Elmaran to come down from his room. She fiddles with her tambourine while she waits, trying to be able to hear the rhythm while not driving the few morning patrons insane.

Mossri

About a half hour later Jocyn makes his way down to the taproom where his favorite student awaits him. Good morning Mossri, how are you today? I hope you haven't been waiting too long. Are you ready for you lesson?

Khadon was up before dawn as usual, preparing the forge for the days work. He hauled water from the river for the quenching trophs, and built of up the fire in the forge adding more charcoal and working the bellows to bring up the heat. He added several half finished piece to the fire to begin heating. By then the sun was up and he went in for breakfast. I have everything set for the day he says to Braggar as he goes back inside. It is cold out there, the forge was almost out. Do you think it will warm up any? He says to his adoptive father as he sits down to breakfast.

Derick awoke that morning before the birds were chirping. He carefully crawled out of bed so as not to awaken Ashely. Another partner in a fairly long string of partners. He placed a gentle kiss on her forhead after sliding the black locks to the side. After he got dressed he snuck up to the roof to overlook the hamlet town under the star light, his elvish eyes taking in everything. After a deep breathe he went and made his rounds, making sure the town was safe, even nabbing a rabbit with one of his daggers for breakfast. After he laid it with the dagger on the cutting block in the inns kitchen he made his way back to the inns roof. At this time the suns light was just cresting the tree tops. He took in the gentle glow as the town slowly awoke. This was his time to relax, and meditate. The beauty of sunrise surpassed only by the sunset. He took a breathe of cold clean air and let his eyes close.
if only it could always be like this. he thought to himself.

After he opened his eyes again the sunrise was in full swing and the noise of a town stirring to life was buzzing in his ears.

well. Today is the day. Let's hope the good mood continues... Best get back before ashely gets up.....

Tigeara wakes up in whatever shelter he found that night. He takes in a deep breath of morning air. He makes sure that Treesinger has food and water. He then checks his traps before having breakfast. He checks on his curing meat and takes some for the journey. After making sure his catches this day do not go the waste, he checks back with Treesinger.

Master, do you have any further lessons to teach?

Rig sleeps late, lying leisurely in bed and enjoying the warmth and comfort. When he finally decides to get up, he looks at the sky and judges the time to be about half past four in the morning. This is what happens when one goes to sleep just after sunset each night. He has about 45 minutes before training starts, and he spends that time adding the final touches to the handle of his latest creation, a dwarven waraxe. He made it in the style of some axes he had seen Braggar working on, but he thinks the shortened handle is an excellent improvement. After that he goes down to the central part of town and looks through store windows by candlelight before they open. When he judges it to be about time, he heads back to join the other trainees, who are just now groggily waking up.

After breakfast Khadon cleans up the breakfast dishes while Braggar goes out to begin working in the forge. When the dishes are clean and put away Khadon joins his master in the forge. the pair work as they normally do until an hour before noon, at which point they clean up the smithy and bank the forge for the day. Khadon washes in the rainbarrel, and puts on clean cloths. He leaves for the temple shortly before noon dressed in scale mail with his bastard sword slung across his back. He is carrying a small bundle containing his blankets and spare clothing.

Nestled in a secluded corner of Holgast's library, Maidie did a last mental inspection of the arcane gestures and movements she had fixed in her memory before closing her spellbook. In her lap, Tanglefoot munched happily on the earthworm she had given him as a treat.

Tugging her spellbook under one arm, she gently scooped up Tanglefoot with the other and deposited the hedgehog in the small satchel she had slung over her shoulder. She had spent some time this morning braiding her red hair in a practical braid instead of the usual twin pig-tails she usually sported, and dressed in sensible traveling clothes, complete with a deep green cloak and a brown vest with enough pockets to fit all the assorted objects she had a habit of collecting for further study or use in her alchemical work.

Getting up, she banged her shin against the crossbow she had set up against one of the bookcases. Cursing under her breath, she resented the need for such a clumsy device, but much as she hated to admit it, her spells were still too limited for effective self defense. Her brother Garth had taught her how to fire the contraption, and also how to wield the dagger in her belt, but she would still prefer to be able to rely solely on magic.

She had not seen Holgast today, which suited her just fine. He would undoubtedly be at the farewell ceremony, and there was little he could offer her in way of preparation that she could not glean more effectively from the library books and her own extensive notes.

Moving downstairs, she spotted the portable alchemical kit she had left by the door.

"I wonder if I should bring it? It's cumbersome, but there will probably be time enough to work when we set up camp for the night, and cooking up some acid or a smokestick might come in handy. Perhaps if I find a backpack somewhere..."

GM, you mentioned something about backpacks and other traveling gear being provided?

Training ends for Rig at eleven, and after a light lunch he retrieves his gear and heads down to the temple of Erastil a bit early to see if anything's going on.

The bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Orfal through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with backpacks and supplies. Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk.Once again the winter winds blow through the Fangwood, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these walls to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?”

Each of you should step forward and introduce yourselves to the crowd.

She then speaks a few arcane phrases and reaches out to touch the lantern the mayor is holding, causing it to shine brightly.

Spellcraft DC 15:
Maidie casts light

You all see the lantern glow with magiacal light, as Maidie casts her simple spell of light. The old dwaven mayor smiles a bit and speaks It is ye, young lady who shall have the honor of carrying the ceremonial lantern to its destination. he pauses and motions to a few of the townfolk men standing by the wagon. They hand each of you a backpack that contains 5 days of rations, a full waterskin, a small tent, a winter blanket. He then motions for the PC's to take the remaining items and divide them up with what each one can carry. These items include: 50 ft. of hempen rope,a box containing a tinder and 3 tindertwigs, a vial of blue liquid, labeled potion of cure light wounds, 3 torches, a grappling hook, and a small bottle of local brandy.
Once them items are distributed, the mayor speaks May the gods watch over ye and protect ye from any danger that may hinder a safe journey to the crypt! After he finishes, father Prast a young priest of only 24 years of age begins to speak. Oh great Erastil, please watch over these brave souls, that they return to us safely, with the everflame in their possession and smiles of accomplishment on their faces. After holding his hands in the air for a few moments he lowers them and bows toward the group, then steps back and joins the other townfolk who are all still holding their saddened heads down. The last thing the mayor hands the group is 4 pieces of the map which will direct you to the crypt. [Bb]Good luck to all of ye, return safely to us.[/b]

Maidie accepts the lantern gracefully, but as soon as the mayor begins to speak again, she stops paying attention to his words, and focuses on examining the lantern. She turns it over in her hands and casts detect magic to find out if it enchanted.

When Dart makes his remark, she doesn't even look up, but mumbles Don't call me "hunny", you oaf. My name is Maidie. The remark is half-hearted though, as her interest is still captured by the lantern.

Once she is done with her examination, she seems to notice the equipment for the first time. Picking up a backpack, she begins loading her other possessions into it. When she is done, she struggles in vain to secure all the clasps and grimaces as she tries to lift it.

I wont be carrying any torches. As you can see, I'm perfectly capable of providing my own light, and I can barely lift this thing as it is. I don't suppose any of you big, strong types would be willing to carry my share of the food or some other piece of gear for me? I'm afraid we'll take forever to get to the tomb if I have to haul all this on my own all the way there.

The combination of the provided items and Maidies own gear puts her into heavy encumbrance by a few pounds.

Thank you, Maidie says as she hands over her tent to Khadon, keeping her blanket and everything else. She blushes slightly at Dart's remarks, but whether it is from annoyance or because she is not used to the attention is hard to say.

In response to Tigeara's question, she says
Well, you all just saw me cast spells. I have many powerful spells at my disposal. And I can also destill acid and make other useful items on the alchemist kit I just packed into my backpack.

She shoulders her lightened pack and lifts the lantern, prepared to lead the group out of town. Then she pauses, looks in several directions and finally down to the piece of map the mayor gave her.

Uhm....my map is a little vague in indicating the best route to the tomb. Do any of you have a copy with better markings? she says, obviously uncomfortable admitting that she doesn't really know how to follow a map.

Rig trails behind, moving slowly but cheerfully along. "You guys are a lot more fun than the people training to be guards. We should do this more often."

You travel about 2 hours from Kassen. The sky is overcast and wind blows the trees making them creek eerily. The leaves blow at times making it harder to notice things you would normally be able to.
