Ok, did the currency conversion. I suppose that as an "Indiana Jones" type that I tend toward the "mercenary" side of things. But money isn't the only thing I'm interested in and I really don't like seeing evil triumph.

Also there are tuppence (2cp), thruppence (3cp) and groats (5cps). A ha-penny or half Penny exists as well. The Gold 'Mark' or 'Sovereign' exists as well being 10 Crowns to the Mark/Sovereign.

Please convert your GPs to SPs.

I'm going to have a really hard time remembering that platinum is gold and gold is silver. Can we use something more intuitive perhaps?

It would help if conversion notes from standard DnD currency to campaign currency were added to the OP site.

Adran has the "Awakened Mind" class feature which gives him the ability to "talk" telepathically with one person at a time within 30 feet of him. Given that the characters all know each other I'm going to assume that they all know Adran can do this and won't automatically freak out if he decides to communicate with them that way.

Ok... lets go back to standard.

I wanted a bit of flavour with it but I can make that flavour text and just use the standard GP so we track it the old way and flavour is just commentary?

Sound OK?

Also Rex, your equipment package should state your starting money

Will change the currency back accordingly. It looks so much better expressed as "GP" than "SP". :-)

Grimm would be looking for work and could be attached to any character who has a promise of money. Alternately, someone could know his clan and have 'call-in' a favour, namely Grimm as muscle. He is fairly versatile so can be slotted into whatever scenario you like.

I can't seem to find the "research and rumors" page. I may need to be added to the group on Obsidian Portal. My user id there is "Cutlass".

I'm not at all against using flavor for the coinage, but I'd have a much easier time remembering something like:

For example.

I'll steal that for next game :)

I'm just plain old "Cutlass" both here and on Obsidian Portal. I finally figured out how to get to the page. Have not seen the campaign invite from you yet though. Not sure why. Sometimes boards can take longer than one thinks they should to make things happen.

In case anyone is wondering why you are dealing with this and not goblins or some other beastie? I am checking skill challenges and how they work as well as the DCs.

I'd love to find a way to make poison more realistic for actual play but for story purposes roll with it.

I have a few questions. I was not a fan of 4E, and was a little disappointed just how much of it they seem to have kept. But, I also don't want to confuse them as things may have changed.

When does one normally roll Perception or Insight (vs having the Passive Scores)?

How does using a shield work in this for Clerics and casting? I noticed there is only one shield, and am not clear on how specific it is. For example, are we assumed to grab our weapon in the shield hand cast and then return the weapon and shield to their normal place as part of casting? Or do I need to drop something, cast, then pick it back up as separate actions, (which basically means Shield goes in the trash can)?

I had a few more earlier, but can't think of them now.

Ok - good question.

Active is when you are actively looking for something.

Lets take Insight.

"I caught a fish thiiiiis big"

In a casual conversation you might be inclined to believe it if he wasn't an object of suspicion. You're not looking to poke holes in his story.

Active Insight occurs when you are suspicious and looking for the lie. It assumes you are mentally adding things up, asking the odd probing question etc

Passive requires no action - its free. Actively using the skill takes an action but you get a roll.

Perception? Passive = walking through the forest relying on your natural alertness. Active? You are looking and listening carefully for enemies.

-- spell casting---

According to page 203 Somantic spells need a free hand to cast. Material components also need a free hand but it can be the same hand used for somantic actions.

Lets now go to actions... for that we need the combat section, Page 189-190

As part of your movement action, you can, for free, interact with an object like opening a door or in your case sheathing or drawing a weapon.

So Round 1 hit with warhammer, 'sheath' it as part of your movement action (5ft step back or whatever). Hand is now free

Round 2, cast a spell, then equip warhammer as part of movement

OR

Round 1 - attack etc.
round 2, 'sheath' hammer as part of move, cast a spell
round 3 equip hammer as part of move and then attack

Ok. I just wasnt sure. I did think of another question. Im still reading, but it might be pertinent, wspecially with so many casters.

How does sleeping/long rest work for prepping spells/abilities? Specifically as to getting interupted and not enough rest?

Or do we need to plan our rest around casters?

Secondly, was a little confused on the spoiler. It looked like you rolled a 1 which was me. Was that for the watch, or "something maybe happens"? Didnt know if I should roll or not.

Going over the section in combat I don't see anything that explicitly addresses making ranged attacks against a target that is engaged in melee with another creature. It would appear that the only consideration is the amount of cover the creature engaged in melee with the target provides for the target. Per the rules on cover, there would be a 180 degree arc for which the target being engaged in melee with a single creature would receive no cover.

What is your take on this?

Glad you asked, well, all of it.

First things first.

Sometimes I'll make a roll for you guys to keep things moving.

If I had waited for you to set watch order I'd still have rolled a dice to work out on whose watch the group has an encounter. It was going to be random for this, no matter what. If it was pre set when the encounter triggered I would have waited for you all to work on what watch.

The same with some rolls - part of the reason I had you post a status bar. I can keep the flow of a game moving forward with a save or a check. In this case, we are moving pretty fast with Rex so the wait may have been only a few hours for the roll but in other cases/characters the wait could be 2 days. You'll note I did the same for you in search for the poultice materials.

I've seen this work in a lot of PFS play and campaign threads but I think in retrospect I should have warned you.

Depending on the time of night, length of combat and the post combat activities I'll rule on spell usage but you guys should be ok for this one .

Cover will be firing into melee on mapless - standard +2 otherwise it's catch as catch can.

I'm not really sure I understand, so let me say it a different way. In most other editions, Spellcasters required an 8 hour rest period to refresh their spells per day (and this generally applied to anyone that had an ability to use something a number of times per day).

I was trying to find out in 5th Edition if there was a sort of 8 hours rule or if it's more assumed that we do a "long rest" and assumed everyone is fine. This is important because if it's the former, we need to work out a schedule (or hand wave it) so that all the spellcasters are ok. Generally, divine casters didn't require sleep, just to try to regain their abilities at a certain time of day. From what I recall of 4E it was just short rests and long rests, and it was very generic, (long rest refreshed everything).

On the other question, I'm perfectly fine with you rolling things as needed. I run a lot of games too, so I get it.

Any continuous period of rest lasting 8 hrs, whether it be day or night satisfies the 'long rest' criteria. Long rest, by RAW fulfills the recharge requirements.

This interrupts the first 2 hrs. As long as you tack on 2hrs in the morning you are fine.

After this combat we will pause a moment and discuss what you guys feel comfortable with in terms of pace etc.

Just an FYI you'll likely see something coming up soon that is not in line with the DMG but is slightly more forgiving in some ways.

AC: 11 HP: 9/9 INIT: 0 Pass Percept: 12 Pass Insight 10: Saves: S +2 D 0 Cn +1 I +2 W +2 Ch +4 Darkvision. Immunity Sleep. Adv vs charm Male Moon Elf Warlock/1

I live in Spokane, Washington. My usual work schedule is Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. While I can normally take some time to post during my shift, there are occasions when things get chaotic and I might not have time to make a detailed post.

The biggest potential problem I have found is simply that I can't have the Player's Handbook with me on shift. The smartphone can get taken anywhere and nobody cares. Taking some time to apparently "text" on the phone is no problem either. But hauling out an obvious game reference manual and doing research could get me in hot water.

This has already had a minor impact on the game. I made a minor misstatement about how the spell Armor of Agathys works in a previous post because I was going off memory. I'd fix it, but I'm back on shift again and don't have the handbook to get the exact wording from. :-0

One possible solution is obtaining a link to a DnD 5.0 SRD if there is one. Another is putting more information about Adran's spells on his character sheet. Fortunately warlocks don't have lots of different spells available.

When I'm not on shift having the book available is no problem. But with a somewhat bizarre and necessarily shifting sleep/wake schedule it could occasionally be 8 to 10 hours or more before I post in response to something.

The other possible fly in the ointment is that Roll 20 doesn't support smartphones unless you pay them money. Pay day is coming up soon and I'll see how much they want and decide whether or not I can cover the cost. I'll let you all know when I've figured that out.

Mate, don't sweat the small stuff.

If you're having fun then let me work with you.

At the moment we are playing mapless so all is well for now, as for the spell being wrong? It's no big deal just post a correction in spoilers when able or here on the discussion thread. If maps become a thing later (likely) then delay until you get home or post you are happy to have someone move you with an idea in mind ("I want to blast something" or "I need to get to a position to blah blah") and we can not you or you can wait a day until you can get on line.

I don't think WOTC have released much digital content BUT I think there is a free basic rule set in PDF floating around that you can put on your phone. There may be other alternatives out there - fan sites and such. Google fu may help.

To make it easier for you later - irrespective of maps or rule things? Just type up your spells in a spoiler section of your character sheet or a google doc and cut copy/paste when you cast.

Or simply post in discussion that you need a day time.

We're on a fast tempo ATM. All pbps start that way then slow a bit later. I want to encourage a fast tempo because it sets good habits for later but at the end of the day? It's all about the players.

While you are a long ways off 4th level if value your opinions on the feat changed proposed on the obsidian portal site. In fact feedback on any of the house rules is valued.

The "Precise Shot" feat doesn't seem to be needed as it is doing away with a disadvantage that doesn't exist.

I think that the "Courage/Jaded" feat would make sense for my character some time down the road. I mean, after you've tapped into an Elder God, most other stuff is going to seem almost boring by comparison. :-)

Yep - I'll remove precise shot. Forgot about it - That was when I didnt understand the cover / firing into melee thing.

Disclamer: My 5e mojo is weakish. I haven't studied the published Feats extensively yet, my local game isn't using them yet.

Spell Focus: There are times where this will yield you all 3 results anyway. Bumping your Spell Casting Attribute by 1 could up your DC and your attack roll anyway so doing that and picking to up either could yield a net +2 to DC or attack. Seems a little OP

Brutal Killer, Metamagic Adept, and Thuggish Prowess: I believe violates some kind of fundamental design rule. You are giving away a Class Feature as a Feat? That means it's over powered and under costed, usually.

AC15 HP 10/10 Init -1 Pass Perception +5 Pass Insight +5 Saves: Str +2 Dex -1 Con +2 Int +0 Wis +5 Ch +3. Female Human Cleric 1

Though I guess the published 'Magic Initiate', 'Martial Adept', and 'Ritual Caster' arguably do similar things (giving away Class Features).

Mala Salazar wrote:

More less - that said, I'll revisit those feat choices that tread on other classes toes and think again.

Thuggish Prowess now requires access to sneak attack. Still thinking on the other two.

AC15 HP 10/10 Init -1 Pass Perception +5 Pass Insight +5 Saves: Str +2 Dex -1 Con +2 Int +0 Wis +5 Ch +3. Female Human Cleric 1

Unsolicited suggestions :)

Brutal Killer:
Prerequisite: Sneak attack ability
Your sneak attack is well practiced and more deadly! When you roll damage for your sneak attack, you can treat any 1 on the damage die as a 2. Increase your Dexterity score by 1, to a maximum of 20.

Thuggish Prowess:
Prerequisite: Sneak attack ability
Where others may strike with a subtle knife in the ribs, you prefer attacking with brutal force. Increase your Dexterity score by 1, to a maximum of 20. You may perform a sneak attack with any one-handed melee weapon, in addition to versatile or ranged weapons in which you are proficient, provided you meet the other requirements.

Rex is problematic.

The reading of shield is that it goes up as a *reaction* when hit then the +5 AC applies to that hit. Is it automatically going up or at the players choice? Someone help me on this. Irrespective a 19 will hit Rex no matter what the case however.

I'm confused by the shield talk. Is that because of the magic surge? Otherwise the player has to choose to cast the spell as a reaction to being hit.

No it is because My charater knows shield. shield is cast as a reaction to being hit or my a magic missile. But I can chose my reaction, so it does not turn off, because i want to hurt these monsters for hurting you guys.

What Rex said

As for a map, let's leave it mapless.

Here it is roughly. Mist limits COMBAT visibility to 40ft.

Treeline
Empty space 50 feet
Camp and you
Empty space 20 feet
Enemy (5)
Empty space 15 feet
Gus (35 ft)
Enemy (1) (40 ft)
Marsh (10 feet or more behind that)

How many can Mala get in a cone? 3 I think is fair. The middle 3.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems that Rex is concerned that casting Shield as a reaction will prevent him from taking an attack action later on in the same turn.

That is not the case. Rex can make both a reaction and an attack in the same turn as the reaction is a "free" response to a triggering condition. The only limitation is that one only gets one reaction per game turn. So having cast Shield Rex would not be able to make an attack of opportunity with a melee weapon later the same turn. But he could potentially cast Shield as a reaction and also cast Magic Missile as an attack all on the same turn with no problem.

The more serious problem is that Shield is a first level spell and casting it would use a spell slot. So I suppose Rex could take the hit if he wanted to in order to preserve the spell slot for later use. But that's a separate consideration from whether or not he can make a reaction and an attack in the same game turn.

All of which is true and needs to be remembered for the future.

However the spear would hit on a 19, shield spell or no.

Here's a question for you I don't know the answer to. Adran is currently protected by the spell Armor of Agathys which has given him 5 temporary hit points. If Adran was hit by a poisoned weapon which did less than 6 points of damage to him, would he have to make a save vs poison? Only his temporary "armor" hit points would have been reduced, not his "real" hit points, therefore he technically wouldn't have taken any "actual" damage.
