'Brace yourselves and tread with utmost caution, you face an agent of the Great Bane of the Elves! The threat is real!'

Sallandrya, agent of her gods and her people, races to join the brave and the bold at the front of the group.

As Gnobby and Podo dispatch the unconscious guards, Andre and Sir Galavaine lock their shields and grit their teeth, rotating to face the corridor in front of them. The sight beyond causes even their battle hardened eyes to go wide. Ahead, the chamber in front of them seems overflowing with men clad in armor and dark vestments with the glowing eye of the capes they found earlier emblazoned on their tunics. Crossbow bolts flash out towards them, but rattle off their shields or the wall, though the men in the rearmost ranks are already reloading, as those in front bear sword and shield, while the points of spears thrust forth from the rank beyond.

The voice calls out again, seemingly from the left, just out of view.

"You caused my forces great harm, though not so great as you may have imagined. Now come, meet your end!"

New map, Party is up!

Tarmin shares a fierce grin with her sister, "A good day to make the demon queen bleed!" she says.

Stepping up behind the two holy warriors, Tarmin finds the seam between Andre and the wall and send two arrows into the mass of evil soldiers.

Gnobby quickly realizes they are outnumbered more than 2 to 1.

He says to his friends:"Don't rush them. Make them come to us. They can't shoot like our elves can."

As much as Gnobby talks confidently, he pulls his cloak tight and moves up to take cover behind the wall. He is curious about the leader.

Gnobby makes an effort to make his voice sound like Rufus, and sees if he can plant the seeds of a deception. He speaks loudly altering his voice with a hand on his throat and speaking through the cloth of his cloak.

"Burne and I didn't want to leave our tower. Who leads this evil group?"

Sallandrya leaves enough room for the Cleric and the Paladin to pull back.

Smiling at Tarmin's courage, she targets the guard most likely to charge so that if he falls he may cause the one behind him to stumble, or for a guard that is ready to lose a shot with a crossbow.

The ranger priest attempts to angle her shots in a manner to force the guards forward to engage her and pull them into the group's position and shouts,

'Evil one, your time has come, as the Seldarine banished your fell mistress for the Eternal Arvandor so shall we rid this land of your wickedness! Know that you face agents of Good, and I strike at you in the Hunter's name!'

Sir Galavaine nods at the advice and takes a step back to allow the soldiers to come to him. He gets his hammer ready to strike in case they get close enough. But for now the archers can lead off.

"Have you soldiers seen the ogre, the crawfish, the bandits and guards that all lie dead thanks to these bravos. You may join them if you attack, or face the mouthings of Lolth hidden away like a coward. The choice is yours but know this if you lay down your arms now, I shall spare you. You have my word as a knight of Castle Vaine."

He waves his hammer from behind the raised shield, "or advance and face your doom! Or wait there and be cut down by true archers."

The holy priest smiles at Andre from the cover and shrugs at the overly dramatic display.

I shall not roll an attack, since ready action don't really exist in these rules.

Gnobby looks on in horror as Sir Galavaine takes his best illusions off the table.

He hisses, "New rule 1: Don't brag about your kills when I'm around. I can't use what you claim for dead."

Gnobby has to improvise. He points to all but Sally and Tarmin. "I need the sound of multiple feet. Follow my lead."

Gnobby rapidly moves his boots up and down in place creating the sound of many running. He grabs his spell components and imagines a large troop of elven archers similar in size and build to the duo before him.

Gnobby yells:
"Keep those wolves away from me!!! Don't point those bows at me!!!"

As Gnobby casts he takes control of all the area in both rooms he can see and begins using it as his tapestry.

He leaves Sally and Tarmin in place. The rest of the group is replaced with more elves who come from the right to take up firing positions with recurved longbows. Their first shots each hit the front two ranks in multiple vital areas. He adds charging wolves with the second volley of arrows that quickly hit the rest of the enemy Gnobby can see.

Gnobby throws in some high pitched barks and yips.

Phantasmal forces 90' x 90' area

Lost in the world he is creating, Gnobby steps out to ensure he can keep his illusion dynamic and ready to interact with his enemies.

Gnobby chooses the form of an elf leader in ranger garb next to him to add to the illusion.

"Cut them all down!" he shouts in a deep voice.

Andre throws his shield up in time to deflect the crossbow aimed at his heart, and looks at the forces arrayed against him. "Shield wall," he said. "Not a bad choice." He raised his sword and stood next to Sir Galavaine, resolute and unafraid.

"It won't help. The Cudgeler shall turn your arrows aside while my compatriots cut down your forces. I'll offer you a chance for surrender, Lareth, but I have no doubt you'll turn it down. Any of your men that throw down their weapons shall receive special consideration. Any of them that turn against you, I shall speak on their behalf at their trials. Any that continue on this fool's errand shall receive no mercy."

At Tarmin's threat and the pounding of feet, some of the enemy look around, but before they can do anything, a cloud of arrows falls among them. One swordsman gasps and falls to the ground, clutching his unwounded chest, but expiring nonetheless. Others shout in confusion and fear, raising their arms and shields against the flight of phantasmal arrows. One of the spearmen in the second rank, bracing for an impact that never comes, looks in bewilderment at his unwounded arm. He calls out They're not... before two arrows, one from each of the real elves, strike him down. Sallandrya downs another spearman whose eyes go wide at the realization that Gnobby's "army" isn't what it seems. However, a third guard manages to duck and call out "The elves aren't real! Sallandrya deftly sidestep bolts aimed at them, while several others fall amongst the phantasmal ranks of elves, striking some and causing them to vanish. One bolt whizzes by Sir Galavaine's head, while Andre parries a second with his shield. A third catches the cleric high on his shoulder, eliciting a grunt, but not doing much damage. 2 hitpoints

Two more figures step from behind the right wall. One looses an arrow from a longbow at one of the "elves," grinning wickedly. The second is a handsome human male with long blond hair, clad in black, holding a staff and a golden eye, which he holds out in front of him. Pettry softly begins chanting to Sallandrya and Tarmin's rear, in counterpoint to a low voice coming from the armor clad priest presenting himself to them. The priest finishes chanting and lowers his finger at the young magic user, who falls immediately silent Silence, 15' radius. Pettry saved, but the effect covers the red circle) "Lloth, the sacrifice in your name shall be great this day!"

Gnobby, just FYI the area of effect for the illusionist version of Phantasmal forces is 40'+10 as opposed to 80+10 for the MU version. The cleric is the pawn on the far left of the third rank, the bowman is on the far left of the second rank.

That is one serious combat!

Sallandrya once again winces at the name of the fell spider, Malum Proditorem, the Great Traitor of the Elven People, but now she has a clear target.

A cleric of corrupted beauty, bloated with blasphemous vile rot from within, that must fall.

Just waiting his opportunity but nevertheless happy now that Lareth is on view, Sir Galavaine points back at the bowman and in tones the words of power. The words of Heironeous are deft and charged to explode but instead of the man feeling pain, his mind and ears are tested by a spell exactly like the one his own priest cast. He faces a priest of similar puissance.

Cast silence 15' radius centred on the bowman.

"The brave Lord takes your mouthings from you, before we st-" but maybe now they just see lips moving.

Good to know about the Area of Effect. Just googled osric and phantasmal force.

Gnobby watches the exchange of archer fire between his illusions and the enemy. He strains to make the elves react as some arrows strike true. WIth so many real arrows hitting, though, he hopes it will be difficult for the weak willed to doubt what their eyes see. He has the barrage of arrows continue from the elves as he tries to concentrate on every facet of his complex illusion.

As the wolves make it to the front row, he hopes they be the finale. Those focusing on the arrows will have limited decide how real the wolves are. The look of concentration to maintain the illusion and effort required is obvious on the small gnome, sweat even drips from his forehead as he grapples with the most complex illusion of his career.

Silence falls across the corridor as Sir Galavaine's spell quiets some of the din. Gnobby's illusury army fires another volley, but in the chaos of the battle, even's Gnobby's skill at illusion proves to be less than perfect. One even manages to dodge a wolf attack, before Podo's bullet catches him squarely in the forehead, his partner deflecting Andre's Sword swing.

Tarmin's arrow silences the one who called out that the elves weren't real, spinning him hard against the wall. Her second takes the target next to him through the throat, while her third catches another crossbowman in the shoulder.

The priest casually flicks away two of Sallandrya's arrows with his mace, though the third catches his upper arm. He grimaces, and raises his holy sybol, glaring in Hatred at Sallandrya, but pointing the symbol instead at Andre, who feels a twinge of fear run through him, but brushes it aside. He is unable to brush aside the attack from the swordsman facing him, who cuts deeply into his flank through a chink in his armor (7damage). Still, he manages to turn aside a spear thrust aimed at him.

Crossbow and arrow fire rain down amongst the party and the illusury elves, but none find their mark, though one bolt just skips off or Salla's armor. Pettry runs up to get closer and out from the effect of the mystical silence. The second swordsman hacks mightily at the "wolf that attacked him, surprise showing on his face as the wolf evaporates with his blow, which carries his sword to clang heavily off the flagstone floor, the blow causing Gnobby to feel his grip on the illusion truly start to unravel...

Tarmin, you hit the only enemy in the 4th rank, Podo hit the swordsman on the right. Party is up.

When you have only one spell a day, you gotta make the most of it.

Gnobby gets concerned when he can see some of his adversaries are not buying the illusion. Still, he attempts to keep the illusions reacting appropriately. He hopes the liberal use of silence spells will help cover the lack of any sound coming from the arrows or wolves.

Tarmin's arrows fail to find a target. As Andre pulls back his sword, his opponent staggers backwards, clutching at his chest. Podo hits his target again, who then falls backwards, struggling weakly and briefly as one of gnobby's "wolves" worries his throat.

Female Grey Elf Cleric 4/Ranger 3 (HP 40/40, AC 2; Init +3; Perception +16, Infravison 60ft)

Seeing that the vile cleric is not yet susceptible to her spell, Sallandrya concentrates her fire on the enemy soldiers that appear to be the most threatening to her friends.

Guys I hope you realize I switched targets because the cleric swatted away two of my three arrows, and I rolled an 18 and 19.

Gnome (hp=5/5) AC=6 THAC0=20 Illusionist/Thief 1/1 xp 0/0

Gnobby enjoys the show. Sheltering behind the wall now and his illusory elven leader, Gnobby continues to keep the confined hallway filled with archers, wolves, and arrows.

To add to the effect, the illusory leader now fires arrows too.

Effects=cover Actions=maintain illusion, concentration

Male Human Cleric of Heironeous 5, AC-1/0 Hits 45/45, xp 13,363.5/27,000

Sir Galavaine's warhammer sweeps over his shield, the knight points out the chaos of battle before him and roars another challenge in the full knowledge that most of the enemy cannot hear a word he says, "Hold and surrender!"

The spell all happens at the same time, the hold person aimed at the archers and crossbowmen towards the rear. After all they represent the greatest threat..

Cast hold person at three missilers. Save at no penalty or held for 7 rounds.

Male Human Paladin 3 [HP: 30/30]

@Salla: Lareth's a bit of a jerk, then.

Sounds like guys I date, but he probably has better hair and a wisdom score not in the single digits.

I seem to be a round behind the other players so another volley.

Seeing Gnobby, Sir Galavaine and the others focus on the foul cleric's followers Sallandrya trains her Celene made bow on the leader again, calling on the Great Hunter to guide her sight.

Aiming for the foul cleric

Shot 1 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 2 = 24

dmg 1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 2 = 10

Shot 3 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6

dmg 1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6

edit - Running out of arrows fast, but hopefully got some hits!

Sallandrya's arrows take down one of the crossbowmen in the rear, while the three furthest back simply cease to move. Seeing Galavaine cast, the bowman levels his bow on the Cleric, loosing two arrows. The first sails harmlessly overhead, but the second just catches his shield, being turned aside by the narrowest margin.

Lareth backs away towards the corner, again leveling his holy symbol at Andre, but having the same result. One of the spearmen drops his spear in favor of his sword, stepping over the body of his comrade, swinging uselessly at another phantom wolf. Though wounded, Andre bats aside another sword thrust. Another of Gnobby's elves is struck by a crossbow bolt and falls, While another bolt plucks at Tarmin's tunic, but fails to catch the elf herself.
