Female Half-Elf Cleric/2

As the group ventures up the path taking in what used to be a fine example of stone mason workmanship a sense of unease washed over Lucem, with a shiver the feeling disappeared (rolled a 17).
Lucem took comfort in the sun shining down on the group. It seemed to be bringing out a lot of detail of the warden's house. (rolled a perception of 24).
"Did anyone else see something move in those windows?" (the following is said out loud, but more just talking out thoughts.) "I wonder how something really old can be shiny enough to reflect the sun like that?"
As Lucem took in the rest of the gaol she couldn't get her attention away from the derelict condition of the building. (perception roll of 11) "So we're supposed to be going inside that!"

Yes Lucem I to did see the movement and light in the upper windows. It seems we are being watched. Oh look at this too, part of the Ivy vines seem to have been cleared away recently. That micht be worth investigating more closly

Malstrom will have Protection from evil rdy to cast when the need arises

Archeos nodded at Lucem and Malstrom's words. "Aye, I caught movement there as well. Per'aps we should check the old house first, in case there's somat' there as would come up behind us eh!?"

Going t move you to the house for this part. Given how sporadically posting happens in this thread, I may need to do more directing of the game flow than would normally happen in a PbP. This way we keep the thread going at least.

The old Manor
As the party neared the old manor, they could better see the state it was in. The timbering of the main verandah was indeed mostly rotten. Ulric would need to step carefully in his heavy armour in order not to put his foot through the timbering here.

The main doors and the shutters in the windows all hung loosely from their hinges. Time and bad weather had briken the shutters, but he doors appeared to have been forced at some time. Beyond the dark portal, the details of the entrance could just be made out. Heavy dust
lay upon the floor, and motes danced erratically in the slanting light of the morning sun.

A slow creaking noise came from above, as if timbers had shifted suddenly, and Archeos called a quiet warning. "Something moved in there again." He drew his bow and nocked an arrow, nodding at the two main fighting men "After you gents" he smiled.

If someone could post a general battle order. A few spot checks or stealth rolls as well. Any knowledge checks that you think might work as well to help you navigate this run down old building. Cheers

Ulric slings his shield and enters with his Flail in hand.
"Asif this was not dangerous enough without all this foul rot underfoot. Pray thee that I don't fall through this decayed floor and become hinderance rather than help."

Male Gnome Oracle

I think Ulric and Brethan up front, Archeos close behind for his perceptio skills. Our wonderfull ladies well protected in the middle and I am happy to watch our behinds.

Malstrom whispers Brethan are you able to smash through the rotted floor boards above and bring that thing down to us rather than us risking our necks going up to it???

perception 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Male Human (Varisian) Fighter (Unbreakable) 2

"I would say just burn whatever it is out of there, but that would be forsaking whatever might be of some use to use within."

Female Half-Elf Cleric/2

Cleansing this place with fire is very tempting. But I'm guessing it would give away the fact that we are here. We need to deal with what ever it is before the whole place knows we're here. I like the idea of pulling it through the floor. Do the beams look weak enough that a few hits will do it?
Making the assumption that a gaurd house would have exposed beams for the floor above, and not a ceiling covering them. Cost saving when building it.

Looking up at the ceiling above, it certainly seemed as if the place could be brought down with a few good blows. However, controlling such a collapse would not be easy to say the least.

Ulric's experience delving in caverns again came in handy here. He realised it would be very difficult to drop the ceiling without causing harm to those in the rooms below. Purely by the way the house swayed as they moved through it gave the big fighter moment to pause. Unfortunately, his understanding of engineering wasn't enough to help him plan the best approach to their plan.

He had already avoided one patch of weakened floor by observing water stains and other signs, but it was gettting harder as he moved further into the darkened place. Dust and shadowy light contrived to work against his eyes in here.

Malstrom raised a hand suddenly, having caught the sound of something above them. As they all listened, a creaking groan came from the area above their heads. The house swayed ever so slightly.

Male Human (Varisian) Fighter (Unbreakable) 2

Ulric moves out of the house. He had no intention of getting too deep insude the dilapidated structure. Now seeing how precarious it was within he suggests the same to the others.

"This place be damned. The longer we linger within the greater our peril. Not only from what ever stirs above but any great movements, such those of battle will surely bring the structure down upon us all. I leave, the decision to follow is up to you."

Male Human Barbarian lvl 1

Brethan says "Anyone have a handy spell to detect what it is on the second floor?"

I think if the structure is going to collapse we stay out of it. Push it over / chop at the corner posts from the outside and see if anything pops out.

Male Human Barbarian lvl 1

Failing that i suggest calling out to it!....or knock on the front door then run and hide!! hehe

Male Gnome Oracle

You are correct Ulric, it is looking even more unstable the further in we travel, best we move back out to the doorway, and then knock it down, Mwhahaha

Climb:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 (just in case)

Listening for upstairs:
Perception:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Perhaps it's best if the more athletic among us scout ahead and then try to draw what ever it is out into the open. I don't mind knocking the building down ... but I'd rather know what's up there before we do it.

Female Half-Elf Cleric/2

I can detect magic, but given the size of the prison that we have to go through. I'd prefer to save it for when we're in there. I'm figuring we'd encounter more opposition in there too. Archeos you sure you want to go back in? I'm not keen going back in to rescue you.

With a nervousness bordering on paranoia, the party moved back outside the building. The air outside felt immediately cooler and free from the scent of mildewed timber and old drapes.

As they left the building, Archeos though he detected a slight rythm to the creaks and groans he was detecting from upstairs. It was less the noise of someone walking around as it was something moving in a pattern or rythm, shifting weight from side to side perhaps.

He was about to turn around and reneter when the other members of the party spoke up and suggested knocking the place down instead.

They huddled as a group in front of the dilapidated building, arguing the various merits of going in to plunder useful gear versus destroying the place while around them the sun continued to rise and burn off the mists of morning.

Perception DC12

Spoiler:
A flash of movement catches your eye and you turn your head upwards. Something had ......manifested, atop the balcony on the left of the prison. Glowing vaguely with a greenish light, it appeared to be a large scythe, wielded by a pair of skeletal hands. The Scythe was moving, very rapidly and seemingly floating about 4 feet above the ground. Even as you wath, the item drifts over the balistrade on the balcony and heads towards the party, seemilngly with malicious intent.

Make a will save DC 10 or suffer from the shaken condition. If already shaken from previous situations, you are now in fear. Note this is a magical fear effect, so bonuses vs fear and or magic can apply to this save.

Also, if not feared now, you can state a single action you wish to take in the surprise round. The scythe is 60 feet away and about 15 feet off the ground at the moment. You have a clear line of sight to it. I will put a map link up when I get home this afternoon.

Holy mother of Torag, we don't have to worry about going inside to find the creature, it is coming straight for us!!! yells Malstrom pointing up toward the balcony.

Malstrom will cast Protection from Evil upon himself.

For those who managed the spot check above, here's a map to help you plan your surprise round action. For those who didn't make the spot, please don't look. I'll post order of combat when the surprise round is taken care of.

Brethan

Brethan turned almost at the same time as Malstrom called out. H saw the apparition coming towards the group and growled low in his chest. Hefting his greatsword into position, the big Barbarian moved himself towards the thing, placing himself in front of the group in the hopes of killing this thing first.

Koal

Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Will Save 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Koal had seen the glowing scythe as well. She shivered in fear as the otherworldly nature of the object became apparent to her. While shaken, she still kept enough wits about her to send an arcane missile into the thing.

Round 1 map, positions as of beginning of round

Round 1(Initiatives are in your favour at this stage)

Having been warned by the actions of their friends, Ulric and Archeos turned and caught sight of the hovering scyhte and its ectoplasmic skeletal hands. (please make a will save, DC 10. If failed become shaken. Ulric, since you're already shaken, if you fail you go into fear.)

Ok, your actions, please use the map to help make decisions and let me know where you move to if necessary.

Ok then, natural dice for you it is ;)

If its any consolation, the same thing kept happening to my Goliath warden in a pbp on these boards too. It's hard to be a tough fighter when you can't hit or save. Stupid dice.

Male Gnome Oracle

init 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Malstrom will stay where he is to protect the ladies (casters) and ready his attack for if it swoops them. If Koal and Lucem move, Malstrom will move with them, if they split I will stick near Koal as she is the cloth wearer.

I hear your pain Pete, I have had some shocking rolls with the auto dice roller

Once again Malstrom will be talking Celestial untill the combat has finished.

Female Half-Elf Cleric/2

Lucem is hesitant to move anywhere since she has no idea how this...thing is going to attack. Malstrom appears ready for an onslaught but seems hesitant to move forward also. At this Lucem realises that they are at the back of the group and decides to quickly check nothing has appeared behind them, or is next to them in the house.
If needed - Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Ok, that's the usual 4 to post. I'll update tomorrow. Giving Chris one more day to respond if he wants.

Guys, this just isnt working for me Im afraid. It really needs 2 or so posts a week per player to keep momentum going in a PbP. At this point I'm going to pause the game in the hopes i can get something else going. Check for an email from me about it soon
