From my reading, none of the bandit randos stood up - they took a move action to wiggle out of bedrolls and then a move action to grab a weapon. Is this correct, GM? Also, the bandit leader didn't get up either, it seems.

Serena leaps around Evelynda and the bandit leader, hoping that her quick footwork helps avoid being lashed out against in retaliation. She moves to stand next to one of the prone bandits before lashing out against the bandit leader with an open palm. She swats at the leader's dagger, hoping to disarm her quickly.

If Jarrah can 5' step downwards or something, that'd give me an additional +4 to this check, so... that'd be great :)

Dropping the torch, Olyenna drives one of her swords down into the same unfortunate bastard she'd burned.

Evelynda flanks the leader with Jarrah, and widening her eyes in frightening menace, attacks with her wild grasping hair!

If she successfully grapples the leader, she will leave her where she is, but she will five-foot-step to the left to give Serena room to flank.

Eliza, still crouching in the bushes, cups her hands and throws something. A ball of vivid blue ice streaks across the open ground, through the flames and strikes hard at one of the bandits on the far side of the fire.

Snowball: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 And a DC14 Fort save or staggered for one round.


The bandit struck by the snowball clutches at his face, moaning but still has the sense to crawl away and stand up, as the one Olyenna impaled bleeds out quietly in front of the fire.

Fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

Between Jarrah and Evelynda's battering the bandit leader slips into unconsciousness just as Serana's spinning kick sends her dagger flying off into the night.

Seeing their leader defeated the last two bandits leap up, heedless of the danger and flee. AOO from Olyenna and Evelynda.

Only one, badly hurt bandit remains to threaten the coven. (The Red one)

Serena charges after one of the escaping bandits, dropping into a slide to tangle up the escaping bandit's legs with her own legs to drop them to the ground. "Eliza!" she calls, "The other one!"

Slashing the fleeing bandit, Olyenna drops her sword, drawing her bow and firing at the lout's back. "I got him."

Evelynda spins and attempts to catch the other running bandit, but misses. Then, seeing that there is still an injured enemy nearby, she casts a spell (blade lash) and her hair stretches out to trip him.

White hair grab: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Her hair drags the injured and now prone bandit back to the square behind her.


The lethal reactions of the changeling bandits fell all three bandits. One with his throat slashed, another tripped by Evelynda's white hair and the last one collapses with an arrow between his shoulder blades.

The one on the floor, bleeding, screams "I give up! I surrender! Please gods don't kill me!"

Combat Over - you have one surrendered bandit, everyone else is dead.

Exploring the campsite thoroughly turns up 321 sp, 90 gp, a pair of silver earrings worth 250 gp, a wooden music box worth 90 gp, three crates of furs and hides worth 50 gp per crate, and a polished wooden case of potent greenish herbal liquor. There are still eight bottles with liquor left in them, each worth 20 gp. More practically 5 short swords and a pair of masterwork axes are also recovered.

Evelynda savors the screams of the bleeding bandit and continues to hold him down with her hair while one of her sisters ties him up. Panting with excitement, she exults "Behold what happens to bandits who flout the rule of our realm. Knave, can you give us any good reasons for why we should not string you up for your crimes?"

As she collects the booze and an axe (for herself, of course), Serena shakes her head. "No, I don't think that he can," she says. "Ask him about his boss." Subtly, she slides the booze into a backpack.

Smiling slightly as she notes Evelynda caught up in their enemy's distress, Olyenna goes about collecting the gear and weapons form the dead bandits after tying up the survivor.

Evelynda moves closer to the bandit's face and slaps him, hard. "Now, tell us everything you know about the Stag Lord," she says menacingly.

I suppose I should roll Intimidate? Intimidate: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 Bah.


The bandit's face contorts in disgust. "Go away you cursed b&#$+! I don't know how you killed Kessel, but the Stag Lord will put an arrow through your black heart for this! You'd best run while you still can!"

Evelynda looks at the others. "Oh this one's a hard case. Let's take him back and work on him a bit." She stuffs a gag in his mouth and hefts him over the back of one of the mounts. Then she pauses. "Do we want to wait here for the others to return, or should we just take our spoils and go?"

Eliza comes out from cover, examining the damage without much interest. "We won't find a better camp-site for a few miles, and the horses are tired. I can go and bring them here but we might as well rest here tonight."

She pauses, obviously counting bedrolls, before examining some of the footprints around the fire. "I don't think anyone got away. Let's rest tonight and head back in the morning."

Olyenna nods at Eliza's assessment. "Alright, leth do that. I'll take firtht watch." the statuesque warrior volunteers.


The rest of the night passes peacefully and the coven awakes the next morning - much refreshed. Your only prisoner has lain quiescent all night and looks at you all with a mixture of hatred and something that might just be respect.

Perception, DC 12:
This bandit wears an unusual amulet - different to the Stag Lord one (which he also wore). This depicts an eye with a single bloody tear as a pupil.

Decide what you're going to do with the bandit and what's next. You have officially explored hex 17 (you passed through 11 too fast to explore it properly, but you could easily do so on the way back to Oleg's)

Evelynda sits staring at the bandit for the first hour after she wakes, taking the last watch. When the others rise, she proposes they give him one more chance to talk before stringing him up here on one of the towers. "No reason to drag his pitiful body all the way back to Oleg's if we're just going to execute him." She regards him cooly. "We can take our time going back."

Upon waking and breaking her fast with her sisters, Serena quickly advances upon their captive bandit. She points to his amulet. "What is that?" she asks, abruptly and without tact.


The bandit puffs his chest out and actually seems quite proud. "It shows I'm one of the Chosen. Our Lady chose me as one of the best!" He grins, showing a mouth of badly stained teeth. "Ain't many of us with this, the Lady only wants the strongest to serve her!"

The bandit appears to realise he's said too much and clamps his lips shut. He doesn't seem inclined to say anything else.

Evelynda draws herself up regally. "Very well, ruffian, if you will speak we will hear you out." She watches the bandit carefully with her sisters surrounding him.

1. "So, 'Your Lady'? Tell us about her, so that we may find her."

2. "How many more bandits are there in the Stolen Lands?"

3. "Who is their leader?"


"You not heard of the Stag Lord?" He laughs, but seems somewhat shakey. "He's got lots of men. Holed up in an old fort to the south. We worked with Kessle - she was the only one who really knew him."

His eyes glaze over a touch, "My Lady - she's so beautiful. She came to our camp a few days ago, and she chose me! She gave me the amulet, said I was special! She took my blood and made me strong! I won't tell you where to find her - I won't betray her! You'll try and steal her from me."

Evelynda looks disgusted. "Your blood? She took your blood?" She looks at her sisters incredulously. "Doesn't sound like she was one of your kind, she says with peculiar emphasis.


This takes place after you deal with the Bandit, next time you go back to Oleg's.

After dinner you all meet on the sturdiest remaining watchtower. None of you have spoken to the others about this but you know that this is the right time and the right place. Under the full moon, the Mother's Eye, as it is often called, your common bond calls. The knowledge of the ritual you need whispers itself into your minds and you know that, even if you do not recall it all, your sisters will help you.

You have the place and the opportunity, now all you need is time, blood and magic.

Go ahead and describe as much of the ritual as you want to - different contributions from each of you is fine. :)

Evelynda chants quietly during the first part of the ritual, and then with a silver knife begins cutting her fingernails, which she collects into a small pile. To this she adds a lock of her hair, which she saws off almost brutally from the back of her head. Mixing these ingredients with dirt and water, she draws a muddy picture on a stone of four female figures holding hands.

Olyenna joins the rhythmic chant, her voice for once absent of her characteristic lisp, her tone strong, supportive. In the light of the mother's eye the silver choker she always wears, the talisman of their circle, glows, the individual charms representing each of her sisters shimmering with the slowly building arcane power. As the ritual processes she extends a finger, the raven black claw of her nail glinting in the moonlight as she draws it across the heel of her hand, drawing a small flow of blood, a token of herself, representing the blood she would gladly shed for each of her sisters. Moving herr hand over the muddy picture, the stream of blood droplets connecting the four figures, amplifying their bond.

While her sisters create the totem, Serena goes around the outside of the group with a large stick she had found for this purpose. She draws a great circle around the group, and then begins to fill it in with a simple yet dreadful pattern. Taking light steps so as not to disturb her own work, she draws herself in last, completing the pattern and tossing the log away.

Eliza gathers the dried stems of straw lying on the floor and twists them deftly into five small figure. Four of decent thickness and one made of a single stalk, which she lays underneath the others as Olyenna's blood drips across each figure - staining the little figures crimson.

Behind her another figure appears, insubstantial at first, but growing gradually thicker until another woman stand on the platform with the coven. Still slightly insubstantial she shares a distinct resemblance with Evie, right down to the mismatched eyes. Her hair is slightly longer, and she lacks Evie's scars and weatherbeaten lines, but otherwise the two could be twins.

Evie glances back and shares a soft smile with the figure, before reaching out for Olyenna and Serena's hands. "It is time sisters!" She begins to sing, slightly out of key and hesitantly, as though shes listening to the words before she sings them herself.

"Sisters four by blood and bone"

Her long pale golden hair hangs down over her eyes as she holds the circle, though her voice is clear and strong.

"Bind us now, in witch moon's light" Olyenna continues, her voice strong and confident as she begins to feel the thrum of power flowing through their joint hands.

Serena's addition is nearly a whisper, but it feels more weighty than it is - "The flaws of four, turn to might."


The Mother's Eye, high above, turns blood red for a moment as all four sisters feel something settle into their bones. For a moment it feels unpleasantly tight, as though you are being squeezed in a vice, before gradually easing to no more than a slight clenching sensation.

Serena raises her hand and giggles as sparks dance between her fingers. Down below Jarrah looks up and lets out a bellowing cry which Olyenna knows is approval. The spiritual figure behind Eliza glides forward to brush Evelynda's cheek and Eliza feels a surge of strength, as though she could lift lift a wagon above her head.

The straw figures, blood-stained circle and crude pictures disappear in a sudden flash and all four changelings collapse to the floor like puppets whose strings have been cut.

The next day you all awake, feeling no unpleasant after-effects of the ritual. In fact, nothing at all seems to have happened until breakfast when Eliza accidentally knocks a jug from the table. Serena grasps it almost before it starts falling - returning it to the table without a drop of milk spilt.

Oleg and Svetlana share a glance, but don't say anything. They have scrupulously avoided saying anything about what happened last night. Oleg clears his throat, "So... we've 'ad some more trapper and the like by. There's a few jobs up on the post outside if you want to earn a bit o' extra coin."

So - what now? Your charter requires that you explore the surrounding lands and the rumours you got from the initial bandit camp are... disturbing to say the least.

Well, maybe we could start by more carefully exploring the hex we traveled through to get to the bandits? When there's no urgency, Evelynda would prefer that we leave at dusk and travel at night, since that way she won't get sick from the sunlight. Shouldn't hinder us much, since we can all see in the dark, right?

Evelynda waits for a moment when Svetlana is busy with something else and says quietly to Oleg, "I have read your notice about Svetlana's wedding ring. We looked over those bandits and their spoils thoroughly, and we didn't see it. Perhaps it was passed on to their overlord, this Stag Lord? If so, we will soon discover the part of this forest where he hides and take it back from him."

Indeed, we all have darkvision. Should be fine, I think, although it cuts off our ability to see things which are far away.

Serena eats quietly, planning over what they'll have to do. Seems like a long upcoming future of slogging through mud and cartography. Perhaps that was something one of them should consider picking up. She goes to find some vellum in order to begin drawing a map.

Using a piece of charcoal Eliza sketches out crude figures. "So this is Olegs." She scrawls a square onto the table. "And we travelled south west, for about twenty miles," She scratches a crude arrow towards Evelynda, who happens to be sitting in the appropriate direction. "We found the camp here, and then came back the same way."

She pauses, looks up to check that all her sisters are following her explanation and then continues. "So I suggest we do a sweep around Oleg's, say ten miles to the west around to the east? It would be worth having an idea of the terrain we're closest to. Shouls only take a few days."

So 4, 11, 12, 5? If we're still feeling good after that we can do 6 and 13 as well to clear one corner?
