Imagine this like the introduction to a movie.
You hear some kind of dull noise. You hear it again. And again. And again.

”dance! Dance! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE!” The scene fades in and you see many people banging their tankards on tables. You’re in some kind of cafeteria.

The men and women here are clad in various suits of armor, all bearing the same symbol: some kind of gem pattern. The armor is worn, clearly used in many battles. Some are singed slightly. In the center of the room is a man with slate-gray skin, dancing as hard as he can. It’s clear entertainment isn’t his strong suit. The crowd cheers anyway, they are too drunk to care.

The scene pulls away from the mess hall, and pans across a rocky field for maybe a kilometer or two. Two figures, cast in shadow against the night sky, are at some kind of obstacle field. One of the voices, an elder female, shouts at the young male. ”No, put the rocks higher. Higher! I need them to fall when they start climbing, not before. If they pass this course it’s coming out of your hide!”

”Please Captain! I understand!” The male cries out, fear evident in his voice even as he struggles to lift the stones.

”Good.” As the woman turns around, a nearby torch lights up her mouth long enough to see her grin from ear to ear.

The courtyard outside of Sorrina Westyr’s office is a tribute to the element of earth. Large, dark boulders jut from a carpet of smooth pebbles. Wild flowers and moss spring from the cracks between the stones. The Master of Spells’ slate- gray skin seems to blend into the rock she lounges on in the sun-dappled courtyard, her face upturned to the cloudless sky. Sorrina stretches luxuriously before turning to smile.

“Enjoy the open air while you can, Pathfinders,” she says. “You are to be among the first agents sponsored to explore the planes—the Plane of Earth, to be exact. Reyshal ik Jalman, the Society’s contact on the Plane of Earth, recently alerted us to a rare opportunity. The Sultana’s constant war with the City of Brass means the shaitan empire needs more soldiers, and they have begun recruiting off-world mercenaries to train alongside their military. That’s where you come in.” Westyr leaps to her feet in a fluid motion, pulling an amethyst crystal wrapped in copper wire from her pocket.

“Please travel with Reyshal to the Opaline Vault. He can pull some strings to get you in with the mercenary company known as the Ungrounded. Complete the basic training and prove to your superiors that the Pathfinders are useful allies. Reyshal and I believe that working with the Ungrounded will lay the foundation for an alliance with the Peerless Empire. What’s more, this is an excellent means for you to establish your own professional credentials and connections.” Westyr pauses to brush a fallen leaf from her hair. “I’ll contact Reyshal as soon as you’re ready.”

Feel free to make purchases and preparations here.

You can make Knowledge(Planes) checks to learn more about the Plane of Earth and the Opaline vault. You can spend 4 hours in the Grand Lodge library to gain a +2 bonus on this check.

DC 10:
The Plane of Earth is fixed in location and comprised of a vast network of tunnels and caverns. Though the plane itself is generally suitable for humanoid life, common hazards include cave-ins, poisonous gasses, and pockets of molten rock near its border with the Plane of Fire.

DC 15:
Creatures indigenous to the Plane of Earth include crystal dragons, earth elementals, mephits, oreads, shaitans, xiomorns, and xorns.

DC 20:
The Opaline Vault, also known as the Rainbow Metropolis, is the breathtaking capital of the shaitan’s Peerless Empire, and a planar hub for entertainment and trade. Sultana Ashadieeyah bint Khalid rules from a gem- studded palace that towers over the city’s skyline. The Vault’s diverse population includes a small percentage of noble shaitans known as pashas, as well as dwarves, elementals, elves, and oreads.

DC 25:
Sultana Ashadieeyah bint Khalid is driven by the desire to avenge her father, causing her to pour ever- increasing resources into her war with the efreet. In recent decades, the gorgeous and prosperous capital has declined, and corruption is at an all-time high. Efreet and ifrits are treated with contempt or open hostility in the Opaline Vault.

DC 30:
In addition to being the seat of the Peerless Empire’s power, the Opaline Vault is a hub for extraplanar visitors. Many organizations hoping to forge alliances within shaitan society establish headquarters there. The Aspis Consortium set up a small outpost on the outskirts of the city in recent years and has already infiltrated the empire’s military.

Thordir, a tall a muscular half elf carrying the better half of a full arsenal on his belts, stands quietly by as the Master of Spells explains their mission. "I've heard the planes can be pretty harsh places. I mean, the Plane of Fire is just a bunch of fire isn't it? So is there anything we need to do to survive just being there, let alone this basic training?"

Once he feels satisfied that he'll be able to carry out his mission, Thordir heads to the library with Barcher and helps with his research.

I'll aid Barcher's knowledge check if allowed. Otherwise, consider the roll below as my attempt.

With help of the library, Thordir and Barcher put their heads together and learn much of the Plane of Earth and the Opaline Vault.
Feel free to read up the DC 25 spoiler.

Going to move this ahead a bit more, as #6 is almost done with the final battle.
Once your preparations are complete, the Master of Spells uses a short copper wire and a piece of amethyst. They go up in a puff of smoke, and she whispers, “Preparations are complete. We are ready.”

The boulder opposite Sorrina Westyr’s seat ripples like water. What appears to be a towering stone statue of a muscular man clad in gold-lacquered armor emerges from the stone. He bows dramatically to the Master of Spells.

“Well met, Trail Seekers,” he grins wryly as Sorrina frowns in irritation. “Of course, I mean Pathfinders. Just a jest between friends.” The shaitan steps forward and inclines his head in a shallow version of the bow he just performed for Sorrina.

“I am Reyshal ik Jalman, humble servant of Her Radiance, Ashadieeyah bint Khalid, and sworn ally to the steadfast Master of Spells. Today I am honored to escort you to the Opaline Vault, the glorious home of my ancestors. I hope that together we can cement the bonds between our peoples, dear Pathfinders. But first, please, introduce yourselves!”

An elder Dwarf opens the door and quickly steps inside, looking a bit flummoxed "Ack, I knew it. Late!" He throws his gauntlet covered fists in the air, a bit angry and embarrassed at the situation. "Whoever runs my schedule needs a good kick in the ass! Even an Ironshanks can't be in two places at once ya damned idiot!" He shouts at someone who's apparently not in the room to hear it.

He relaxes, dropping his stout arms to his sides and does a half bow to the group "Name's Ironshanks, Ironshanks Magee. At yer service." He completes his bow, numerous weaponry clang against his full plate armor but despite his advanced age his balance doesn't falter. He walks up to each and everyone and firmly shakes their hand. Starting with Westyn, followed by Jalman, then proceeding down the line from Dwarf, to Humans, to Half Elf, and finishing up lastly and briefly with the Elf.

"Yer sec-retary said somethin' 'bout a trip to the plane o earth? Umm... is that a long ride or... hopefully not a walk?" He eyes up the rippling stone, pulling a few fingers through his proper beard "Is that one of those portal things?"

"Of course. Good to see you all. Finally." he glances at Ironshanks and sighs.

Once the pleasantries are complete, he asks everyone to stand in a circle and join hands. You feel a sense of vertigo and a tugging feeling in your stomachs.

A spinning tunnel of shimmering crystals gives way to the inside of an immense geode, a cavern so vast that the walls and ceiling appear as a distant night sky. Multicolored twinkling lights hang in the air like stars, painting shifting auroras across the geode’s walls. At the heart of the city, radiant spires of gold and platinum emerge from a churning lake of liquefied gemstones, connected by soaring bridges. “Welcome to the Rainbow Metropolis,” Reyshal whispers.

You are about a 2 mile walk away from the city. Reyshal is an excellent guide, preventing you from getting lost. He mentions a few of the more interesting landmarks: the Peerless Embassy that hosts diplomats from across the universe. The Slab, a mile-long barracks that hosts most of the sultan’s shaitan army.

”Welcome to the Outer District.” Reyshal gestures to the various buildings, many of which are indigenous to the Material Plane. ”Many offworld residents move here and try to earn the pasha’s favor with a combination of diplomatic and business favors.” He brings your attention to the many flags, banners and coats of arms displayed prominently on the buildings.

DC 15 Knowledge(local):
You see a familiar banner with a serpent emblem. That’s the Aspis Consortium! What are they doing here?

Thordir returns from the library along with Barcher and shares the knowledge they had gained about the Plane of Earth. "Seems like we should be alright there," he says breathlessly. "Some your people live there," he notes to the dwarves, "and even some elves! Ah, it'll be good to be among elves again." Thordir almost lapses into reminiscence, until he notices the Outsider in their midst. "Ah! My apologies, sir. I'm called Thordir." Ironshanks nods along with Barcher, although a bit half heartedly before the rest of the introductions are brought. "Yer pretty big fer an Elf Thordir. I ain't seen arms that big across, other than mine acorse, since this pea brained orc I was escortin' through some caves just yesterday." He wrinkles his nose bit in disgust at the thought.

The elder Dwarf looks a bit nervous as the group readies themselves in a circle "I ain't gonna end up all twisted up at the end of this am I? Legs fer arms and arms fer legs sorta thing? A big toe comin' outta me forehead?" He grimaces as the world swirls around him, even starting a low chant in Dwarven.

Dwarven:
"Torag keep me safe. Torag keep me safe. Torag keep me safe."

As the world reforms he opens his eyes, blinks a few times and a wry smile crosses his lips as he sees the gem stones and then off in the distance the glint of gold in the streets and buildings. "We're rich! Get yer pick axes boys, we got some diggin' ta get to!" His disappointment is oppressive as he's dragged off towards the barracks in his full plate. Clink, clank, clink, clank.

"Sure are lots o flags here. Can't say I recognize a one of 'em." He blurts out, the gem stones still occupying his thoughts.

Reyshal leads you to a windowless building, 20 feet high. Banners bearing the company’s sigil, a crossed scimitar and spear on a field of yellow, mark the main entrance. ”This is called the Ungrounded Barracks, dedicated to… unconventional soldiers. I will bring you to the training captain’s office.”

A heavy wooden door opens to reveal an immaculate office barely large enough to house the writing desk and bookshelf within. The unpainted stone walls are devoid of windows or decoration. A stern, middle-aged human woman with darkly tanned skin and close-cropped salt-and-pepper hair sits in a rigid pose behind the desk as she studies an open ledger. She lifts her chin and glares at the open door.

Reyshal produces a paper-thin chiseled stone tablet and hands it to the human woman. She spends a few minutes studying the page, looking up to frown at you. Finally she exhales and thanks Reyshal. ”I’ll begin accelerated training immediately. Thank you for bringing these… Pathfinders to me.” Reyshal nods, gives you one parting bow, and leaves the office. ”Good luck, Pathfinders. Captain Othis will get you up to speed.”

He leaves and closes the door. Captain Othis crushes the note with her hands, leaving a pile of stone chips. “So, you think you have what it takes to be Ungrounded?” the captain bellows, circling you combatively. “I’ll be the judge of that. You look softer than night soil to me. Your friends in high places won’t help you when you’re down in the trenches, or when there’s an efreeti scimitar at your throat. Now, get out of my sight. Your trials start tomorrow. Dinner is at six o’clock sharp. If you’re late, you can starve.”

Captain Othis stomps her way to the door and yells outside. ”Dell! Dell Darkblade! Get over here!” An oread walks into the room. ”Take this fresh meat to the meatlocker. I have more important things to do.”

A young oread warrior hustles up to the door, short on breath. "Yes... captain. Right this way."

You can see Captain Othis on Slide 1. Any questions for Dell before he shows you around?

You look softer than night soil to me. Your friends in high places won’t help you when you’re down in the trenches, or when there’s an efreeti scimitar at your throat. Now, get out of my sight. Your trials start tomorrow. Dinner is at six o’clock sharp. If you’re late, you can starve.”

"Hey I agree Cap'n, if an efreeti's blade is at my throat I definitely deserve it, of course I'd never let one get that close." he says confidently while patting his hip quiver.

Captain Othis stomps her way to the door and yells outside. ”Dell! Dell Darkblade! Get over here!” An oread walks into the room. ”Take this fresh meat to the meatlocker. I have more important things to do.”

A young oread warrior hustles up to the door, short on breath. "Yes... captain. Right this way."...

once they have left the captain's office Barcher will ask Dell,"Is the food even worth getting there on time buddy? and why are we going to the meat locker and not the barracks?" he asks genuinely.

1-23 (Thread|Slides)

"The meat locker... yeah, you're definitely new." Dell chuckles. "I'm taking you to your room. The meat locker is where all of us sleep."

He looks at Thordir and Ironshanks. "The Ungrounded mostly work as sellswords in times of peace and infantry in times of war. Most of our training will be physical in nature. Running, swimming... climbing."

He coughs when Darven mentions the Captain's disdain of Pathfinders. "I don't know who you guys are, but the Captain's treats everyone a bit roughly. I guess it's her way to break people down before she can rebuild them. As long as you can pass her challenges, you should have nothing to fear."

Dell Darkblade maintains a hurried pace and continues the tour.

”You’ve seen the Captain’s room. She’s in it for most of the day except for dinner and when she goes to sleep.”

”There is the Mess Hall, they are preparing dinner. There’s plenty of room to sit down as most of the troops are deployed.”

”That is the Training Yard. It’s more of a stadium, where you can sit on the raised viewing stands and look at the recruits on the ground level.”

”And here is the Bunks, where we reside. And here… is your room.” Dell Darkblade opens the door. The previous inhabitants left in a hurry, and it’s a complete mess. It looks like there are only 5 beds to sleep on, and none of them are dressed properly. ”Oh, this won’t do… the Captain hates messes. She’ll demerit you to the ground if you mess up too much.” He bows to you and leaves. ”See you at dinnertime.”

Who is sleeping on what beds? How much cleaning will you do before dinner?

Durgan catches Dell's elbow before he can leave.

"What do you mean, 'dressed properly'?"

Doing some quick math in his head, he points to Ironshanks and jerks his thumb over his shoulder.

"Lets see if we can find another bed around here someplace. The rest of you, pick up the big pieces and get everything off the floor. Then find some mops, buckets, and scrub brushes. We'll see if we can make this place livable."

Ironshanks swears as he sees the messy room, then nods in agreement with Durgan over the bed issue "Ain't no way I'm not sleepin' on a bed, and no reason no one else here shouldn't!" He steps out into the hall and hollers to Dell "Hey Dell! We need another bed in here. There a place we should get it or just find it ourselves?"

The first thing Ironshanks does is head off with Durgan to get that 6th bed while the others hopefully do some cleaning. Peeking in rooms and finding one that looks empty to snag a bed. Afterwards he heads back, peeved, but satisfied. "The military sure does like to mess with new recruits. Get under yer skin and see what you got fer resolve. Don't let 'em get in yer head." He gets out of his full plate and gets cleaned up for dinner.

Darven elects to sleep on the floor once everyone cleans the bedroom.

It’s dinnertime, and the smell of roasted potatoes wafts through the Mess Hall. As you approach the line, a group of seasoned warriors approach you and block access to the line.

One of the warriors, a lean half-orc, laughs. ”New recruits? Ha! I guess you don’t know of our tradition here: new recruits entertain us for the rest of the night. If you won’t party with us, you won’t fight with us!” The rest of the soldiers in the room cheer and bang their mugs in unison. ”DANCE! SING! STORY! DANCE! SING! STORY!”

If you want to get in the good graces of the company, you’ll have to entertain them.

"Fer Cripes sake. Ya want an old Dwarf tellin' stories and dancin'? Are ye MAD? Whatever, laugh at me all ya want, but don't get in the way of them roasted spuds!" He starts doing a little jig. Considering his gruff and stand offish nature, the jigg is pretty entertaining.

Barcher turns a shade or 7 redder,"perhaps if I had some food and ale to clear my throat I could provide you with a much nicer ditty to dance to Mr. Magee." he says while looking pleadingly to the half orc."Must be this dry Earth plane air or something. If you let us eat, I Promise to sing a little bit every night sir." he finishes, trying to placate the Orc.

The company erupts into cheer, banging their mugs of ale as they clap and hoot. The half-orc claps. ”My name’s Larssok. And here is some extra ale, on me.” He hands you all an extra mug. ”Welcome to the Ungrounded.”

"Man, you dwarves know how to boogie!"

---

With food taken care of, it seems like you spent the rest of the day trying to acquaint yourself with the rest of the Ungrounded. But now it’s time to rest...

At the stroke of midnight, you hear someone hit a metal pot with a wooden ladle right outside the door to your room. ”This is Captain Othis! Open up and at attention!”

She steps right in as soon as you open the door, inspecting your beds. ”You can tell a lot from someone who can’t make their bed. If you can’t do such a simple task, how can I trust you to oil your armor, sharpen your sword, or lay your life to save the empire?”

She sees that the room is spotless and stops herself.

”I shall return at 0600 hours to personally wake you up. Don’t waste my time.” She turns and leaves the room.

Dell Darkblade told you Captain Othis’s stays in her office unless she is eating dinner or resting in her private quarters. And when she’s not in her office, the door is locked.

Will you look before dinner? Or after?

Unlock the office door:
This requires a DC 20 Disable Device check.

Distract the Captain:

A few hours after the Captain 'checked-in' on the Pathfinders, Wraith flits through the hallways. In a hurry, she gives the door a cursory check before working on the lock in earnest.
