This will serve as the sign-up and discussion thread for PFS #7-21: The Sun Orchid Scheme, with GM Pendrak. Players with new or existing standard Pathfinder Society characters ranging from level 1 to level 5 are welcome to sign up.
I will be accepting anyone with a qualified character who is interested, and the first table will begin when we have six players. If there are at least twelve interested on a first come, first served basis. I will run a second table, and so on (to a reasonable limit). I have been given the advice that I should only run one table of this, because the first section is apparently very difficult to run in PbP. That said, I will just be taking the first six to apply. Sorry for the confusion, but I don't want to get in over my head, and this advice seemed sound.
Therefore, the table will consist of the following:
Crowe, human bloodrager 1, played by noral
Tanto Kawaterru, kitsune swashbuckler 2, played by Greenclaw
Kiaru, elf rogue 3, played by Garmon
Huni, human warpriest 3, played by Huni
Zzorn, human barbarian 1/fighter 1, played by GM PDK
Pai, gnome kineticist 1, played by Warah
I just need character sheets for Kiaru and Tanto, and we'll be ready to go. We will be playing in the lower subtier.
Crowe - Iconic Character |
@GM Pendrak.
Would you mind if I played Yoon, the human iconic kineticist 1, instead of Crowe the human iconic bloodrager 1?
Have a good weekend everybody!
GM Pendrak |
This would be Yoon. :-)
Yep, that's fine.
Pai Shecks |
Oooh. Two kineticists! And no healer. Stock up on potions of Cure Light Wounds, everyone!
GM Pendrak |
I believe that Huni, resident warpriest, could use a wand on you guys.
How long do you think I should wait on Garmon to check Kiaru (your rogue) in?
Edit: I decided I'd put my OOC stuff from the Gameplay thread here instead to keep the post looking cleaner.
If he doesn't end up playing, do you think I should take the next person from recruitment, or should we just go with 5? The next in line would be philipjcormier with a 4th level kineticist, who would be awfully high level for this engagement. Next after that is someone who listed their character as a 3rd party class...? Then there is a 1st level sorcerer that might be the best fit.
Regardless, that's most of the information that you can get here at the beginning. We can proceed to the infiltration and surveillance portion of the mission as soon as everyone is all set.
Pai Shecks |
I'm okay with waiting until next week to allow our rogue to check in. That seems to be a pretty desirable class for this module. I agree that a 4th level kineticist would be overkill for this particular party, both because of the level and the class. Since you are familiar with the demands of this scenario, I trust that you'll make a decision that will work best for all involved.
Yoon - Iconic Kineticist |
Yes, it is okay to wait until Monday or Tuesday. The weekends are often quite busy and posting not so easy. :-)
GM Pendrak |
Okay, I'll give him until Monday. If not, we'll take the 1st level sorcerer, or whoever is next in line after that.
Yoon - Iconic Kineticist |
Forgot to mention: Yoon is Sovereign Court as the character receiving credit is SC. ;-)
GM Pendrak |
Okay, noted.
Edit: Garmon replied and he will have a character sheet for me tomorrow for Kiaru, elf unrogue 3, thus completing our party.
GM Pendrak |
I thought it might be a good idea to go ahead and give you guys an idea of how the next part will work while we wait for Kiaru, since it will give you more time to decide which building each person is going to, and what skill check they will be attempting each day.
As you will see, it's not all Bluff, Disguise, and Stealth, but you get to use a myriad of skills to impersonate different people. You don't have to act or lie (other than a lie by omission so to speak), you just have to fill the role by using appropriate skills: a cleric might, for example, be working at the barracks actually putting together medkits, but just doing some spying while he's at it, if that makes sense.
So, on to the planning stage. As mentioned by Lady Ziralia, infiltration seems the best option, but there are many different roles you could take on at either of the two locations you want to infiltrate, the workshop (where they are building the transport) and the barracks (where they are readying the defenses). You can also do something completely different if you have a better idea, but assuming you go this route, here are the rules of engagement.
There are going to be three days of this stage.
Once per day, you can attempt a skill or ability check associated with your chosen method of reconnaissance. I'm not going to tell you the DC, but it increases by 3 each time you attempt to use a skill or ability that you have used before in that location, so it's better to try another skill each day (unless you have one skill that is just way higher than all the other possible ones).
If you succeed on your check you earn one success for that day at the facility you are infiltrating. If you exceed the DC by 10 or more you earn two successes. You can earn a maximum of three successes per facility per day, and information gained from each success is cumulative. Each additional success beyond the maximum provides a cumulative +2 bonus on all skill checks in that facility the following day.
The more successes you get the more information you will get, and the easier the heist will likely be. Additionally, each failure causes a complication, which will make things more difficult if you don’t subsequently succeed on another skill check to smooth things over. You’ll see what I mean once we get going.
Below are some of the options, but feel free to be creative (I added the child option based on Pai's idea, I think it's pretty reasonable but it is open to suggestions). If you have an idea for something else let me know and I can figure out what skills would be associated with it.
Animal handler (Barracks only): Manage mounts and guard animals with Handle Animal, Knowledge (nature), Profession (driver or stable master), Ride, or wild empathy.
Engineer (Workshop only): Build convoy with Craft (locks or traps), Disable Device, Knowledge (engineering), Perception, and Use Magic Device.
Guard or laborer: Blend in with Intimidate, Knowledge (local), Perception, Profession (soldier), or Survival.
Mage or medic: Fill magical or medical needs with Appraise, Craft (alchemy), Heal, Knowledge (arcana or religion), or Spellcraft.
Supervisor: Fool overseers with Bluff, Diplomacy, Linguistics, Profession (clerk or scribe), or Sense Motive.
Thief: Sneak in with Acrobatics, Climb, Escape Artist, Sleight of Hand, or Stealth. The thief is the option if you aren't impersonating anyone, but rather just sneaking around.
Child (small-sized PCs only):Pretend to be just playing, not spying with Acrobatics, Bluff, Diplomacy, Disguise, or Perform (act, dance, or sing).
In character you don't need to specify what skills you'll be using each day, just let me know out of character. So, your post might be something like the following if you were a ranger:
"I'll join the others at the barracks, where I'll impersonate an animal handler."
My ranger will try Handle Animal, Knowledge (nature), and then Ride.
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Knowledge: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Ride: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Or as a sorcerer with fewer skill choices:
"I guess all that is left is for me to join the last two at the workshop where I'll pretend to be a mage."
My sorcerer will do Spellcraft, but since she's short of skills, the last two days will both be Knowledge (arcana.
Spellcraft +4: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Knowledge: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Knowledge: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Remember, this part is just getting information about the caravan. You aren't meant to steal anything (and there isn't yet anything to steal), just to recon for the later part of the adventure.
I'm having everyone do all these rolls at once to speed things up. Then I'll go through day to day and describe what happens, calling for your guys input if anything goes wrong or there are any roleplay interactions.
Wait to post in the gameplay thread (other than any more chit-chat or questioning of the Ladies which is welcome) about any of this until I provide the description of your journey to Pashow, but feel free to discuss here in this thread.
Huni |
Huni could go with Supervisor Sense Motive +8, Engineer Knowledge (engineering) +6, and Medic Heal +7 for the infiltration.
GM Pendrak |
Huni could go with Supervisor Sense Motive +8, Engineer Knowledge (engineering) +6, and Medic Heal +7 for the infiltration.
I guess I should be clearer. You can really each only choose one role to impersonate. I guess in theory you could go part of the time to the barracks and part of the time to the workshop, but you'd need to find in either place one single role to fulfill while you are there, if that makes sense. So you want to find the role that has the most viable skills for you, ideally three skills (one for each day), but two or even one if you're okay with the increasing DCs.
So Huni could choose, for example, supervisor, and use Diplomacy, Sense Motive, and Spellcraft (or Sense Motive twice with a higher DC, or whatever way you choose to do it). Or he could go Medic and do some combination of Heal and Knowledge (religion). But he couldn't mix and match.
Yoon - Iconic Kineticist |
The idea with the child was not bad but Yoon would probably make a good thief with +11 Stealth and +7 Acrobatics.
Huni |
I see. In that case, Huni is best equipped for either Supervisor (three skills at +5, +5, and +8) or Medic (three skills at +7, +5, and +5).
I have a hate-hate relationship with the dice roller on this board. Can I Take 10 on these rolls?
Tanto Kawaterru |
Thanks for the detailed and very helpful descriptions of the rules and options, GM!
So, we essentially have two choices:
1) Where will we go? Guardpost or Workshop? (we will be splitting up here)
2) What role we play once we're there? (Some roles are only available at one location but some like guard/labourer use similar skills at both locations)
Based on this, I think Tanto will be best suited to impersonating either a guard at the barracks or a labourer at the workshop.
GM Pendrak |
I think I'm going to rule that since you are essentially multitasking you are considered distracted and cannot take 10. If you don't want to mess with the dice roller I'd be happy to roll for you.
Also, you are not required to make the checks every day. So if you think your odds are bad on day three you can sit out. But I'd recommend having at least one person at each site each day to make sure you don't miss anything.
Huni |
No. I'll roll my own doom.
Huni goes in as a supervisor
Sense Motive 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Linguistics 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Diplomacy 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
That's going to be fun.
Tanto Kawaterru |
Wait to post in the gameplay thread (other than any more chit-chat or questioning of the Ladies which is welcome) about any of this until I provide the description of your journey to Pashow, but feel free to discuss here in this thread.
I didn't think we were supposed to be rolling yet but we now seem to have rolls in both threads. I'll roll my own too, if that's OK (when it's time of course!) :)
GM Pendrak |

If you guys want to go ahead and roll, that's fine, though I'd prefer it were done in the discussion thread if you feel the need to do it now. I'd have preferred to allow Kiaru a chance to join the discussion with Ladies Gloriana and Zaralia if he so desired, and to have had the opportunity to describe your journey across Thuvia, however briefly, before someone posted an advancement.
No harm done, other than what will be an out of order gameplay thread. Feel free to roll in this thread, or if you want you can wait an do it in a post in the gameplay thread soon.
So, if I understand correctly, we have the following roles being fulfilled so far:
Zzorn- thief at the workshop
Huni- supervisor (please specify at barracks or workshop, or what combination on what days)
Yoon- thief (please specify at barracks or workshop, or what combination on what days)
Pai- child?
Tanto- guard at the barracks, or laborer at the workshop
Kiaru- TBD
Yoon - Iconic Kineticist |
Yoon would spy as a thief in the barracks (day 1), barracks (day 2), workshop (day 3)!
Zzorn |
Sorry GM Pendrak - feel free to assume Zzorn does this later if you wish more RP time with players who haven't shown up yet. I can also re-roll later if you wish.
PS: Zzorn would have preferred some kind of 'visiting noble' or 'visiting investor' angle, using Knowledge Nobility; but if the option is not available, Climb checks are his best bet! :)
GM Pendrak |
Well, I'll give you the option of re-rolling if you want. Is there still time to edit that post with just some dialogue with the ladies, or is it too late?
If you want to go the visiting noble/investor route, I'll allow for the following:
Visiting investor Convince the workers and overseers that you may want to hire them for another project in the future with Appraise, Bluff, Intimidate, Knowledge (nobility), or Profession (merchant).
Day one- Stealth at the barracks: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Day two- Stealth at the barracks: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Day three- Stealth at the workshop: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
Zzorn |
I'd use investor option if possible; however my post is no longer editable. Do you wish me to contact a moderator to remove it? If you wish, assume my results are 2 higher than those posted. (Climb is at +9 and Knowledge Nobility is at +11)

No, it isn't a big deal. So we have so far:
Zzorn
Day 1- Knowledge (nobility) at the warehouse (20)
Day 2- Knowledge (nobility) at the warehouse* (23)
Day 3- Knowledge (nobility) at the warehouse** (16)
Yoon
Day 1- Stealth at the barracks (26)
Day 2- Stealth at the barracks* (25)
Day 3- Stealth at the warehouse (23)
Huni
Day 1- Sense Motive at the ? (13)
Day 2- Linguistics at the ? (7)
Day 3- Diplomacy at the ? (24)
Pai Shecks |
Boy, I sure am wishing Pai had more skill points. Haha!
Anyway, since Yoon isn't doing the child thing, I doubt Pai would be able to pull it off on her own. So based on the other options and what people have already claimed, here's what Pai will do.
Day 1: Laborer at barracks: Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Day 2: Laborer at workshop: Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Day 3: Laborer at workshop or barracks: Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 (Edit: Sit this one out. There's no way the DC is low enough for success on this roll!)
The locations of the first two can be switched as needed to make sure we have someone at each site on those days. Of course, Pai's best skill here would be stealth (+11), but as we already have two PCs choosing the thief roll, it would probably be best to avoid putting all of our eggs in one basket.
GM Pendrak |

Day 2 - Guard at Barracks - Intimidate: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Day 3 - Thief at Barracks - Acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
GM Pendrak |
Okay, still haven't seen a post from Garmon for Kiaru. I'm thinking I might want to go with an alternate.
Pai Shecks |
Pai will happily sit out on the third day's check, since she rolled so terribly. Unless you won't allow that, in which case, let the comedy of errors begin!
GM Pendrak |
Yeah, I was saying that you could forgo a day if you just didn't want to try because the odds were really bad or something, but I'd say since you rolled already it would be that you did try. Especially since in general the rolls are going really well so far, and we want there to be at least a few complications. They really aren't that bad and make up the bulk of the actual roleplay in this section. If nothing goes wrong, you just cruise through without any action.
Zzorn- Investor
Day 1- Knowledge (nobility) at the workshop (20)
Day 2- Knowledge (nobility) at the workshop* (23)
Day 3- Knowledge (nobility) at the workshop** (16)

Day 2 Intimidate at the barracks (27+2=29)
Day 3 Acrobatics at the barracks (26+2=28)
Barracks

Day 2- 4 successes
Day 3- 2 successes, 1 complication
Workshop
Day 1- 2 successes, 1 complication
Day 2- 2 successes, 1 complication
Day 3- 3 successes, 1 complication
I'm going to give the rogue a little more time, and then see if the alternate wants to play.
