The group heads back to the small village under construction. The day and a half it takes to get there is relatively quiet, no more animal attacks day and night.
When they arrive, the villagers seem of mixed emotions to see them, and the way the lumberjacks glower at the group, it's obvious they've poisoned the villagers, at least some of them, against Wilhelm and his group.
After any diplomacy checks anyone wants to make, or statements
After a good night's rest outside the village in process, the groups split up and begin heading in their respective directions.

Note, I'm reorienting the map to be up north, right east, left west, bottom south to make it easier on me.
The group begins their survey, heading to the east. They spend a few days in the woods, finding nothing unusual, other than the occasional hawk screech at the wrong time of day, or an owl hoot during the day.
However, after about 2 days of surveying, a distant 'yip' sound can be heard. Following the sound, the group comes across a small clearing in the woods, in the center is a large square opening in the ground. The yip sound seems to be coming from the hole.

Corwen Surefoot |
"This may be a chance for me to make myself useful," Corwen offers diffidently. "I'm used to having to move quietly and avoiding notice. Also, my eyes and ears are sharp." Corwen will wait for the go-ahead from Dante, who he assumes is the leader of this smaller group.
Actually, just checked Ikit's stats, seems he's stealthier than Corwen :) However, the suggestion stands, as Corwen would be unaware of the ratfolk's stats. Also, he's keen to prove himself useful, despite his reserved exterior.
Ikit the White |
ikit smaller too! Yes yes :P

Rowan Gideon |
Rowan smiles as the two newcomers volunteer to check out the noise. "I think all three of us are rather stealthy, we'll go together. I'm sure Dante or Felicia can bail us out of trouble if worse comes to worse."
Dismounting from his horse, Rowan observes the surrounding area for any signs of an ambush or traps before picking a route to approach the hole.

As the 3 approach the hole, they see what looks like a dog like creature in the bottom of a pit 20 ft deep. The poor thing looks staved, although it has bone like horns sticking out of it's body, so it's difficult to get the exact species.
As they approach, it yips at them, showing fangs as blood red eyes stare angrily up at the trio. Smell
Then the side of the pit collapses!
Reflex DC 20 to avoid falling into the pit!

Reflexes: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
Corwen leaps back as he feels the ground fall away beneath him, and watches helplessly as Ikit falls into the pit.
mdt |
Unfortunately the pit is 15x15 and 20 ft deep. So he can't avoid being within 30 ft. Add on that it's starving.. and if Ikit is the only one to fall in, the thing will be making will saves to attack you for food. If Rowan falls in, then, of course, he'll be dinner instead.

Dante Skyborn |
Dante nods at Ikit, Corwen, and Rowan. Slightly perturbed at being sent on a "Diplomatic" mission.
"Ikit the white! Are you injured?" Dante shouts down into the hole.
Dismounting, the fighter draws his bow. "We'll get you out momentarily." he says, moving to put the wounded creature out of its misery.

Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

Rowan shouts out as he begins falling into the pit as well. Looking at the pitiful creature trapped inside the pit with him, Rowan grabs Argos's bag of feed and tosses it next to the animal.
@Dante: Rowan may object to killing it if it's a rare creature of some sort.
For future reference, Druids don't smell, lol.
mdt |
Ratfolk & Human non-druids do though, it only took one person approaching for it to realize someone was coming
Dante can't get a shot without going up to the pit (which has an unstable side).
Rowan, thylacines are an extinct (in the real world) predator species, so meat eater's, not vegisaurus's. :) However, the feed bag might distract it for a bit, especially since Rowan is next to Ikit. This one on the other hand is a dire version, rather rare, it's about 50% bigger than a normal thylacine, and has bone spurs and spikes sticking out all over.
Will: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
The thylacine snarls and yips at the two, dancing forward a couple of steps toward Rowan, but trying to shy away from Ikit at the same time. When the bag of feed is tossed next to it, it rips it open with claws and fangs, shredding the bag and spilling oats all over.
Shimmer, if you're approaching the pit, you'll need a reflex DC 20 to avoid possibly falling in as the sides are crumbly. Currently, the only person who's found a stable perch next to the pit is Corwyn.
Corwen Surefoot |
Corwen hesitates for a moment, standing lightly on the unstable earth on the brink of the pit. These folk saved me from the animate trees, but I'm not sure my crossbow is much use against that thing, and I don't really want to jump in there...
I'm assuming the thylacine isn't flat-footed, GM?
Corwen Surefoot |
Ok, time to check out the possibilities...
Can you give me an idea of the DC for climbing down the side of the pit? If it's DC 15, I take 10 on an accelerated climb check (DC 20) and get most of the way down, then drop the remaining 5' for no damage, and still have a move to get into a flanking position (with an acrobatics check if req'd). How wide is the pit? If it's only 10' square that's not a very good plan, but if it's 20' square it'd be worth a shot... Pinging away for 1d4 a round from up top isn't very useful - time for some rogue bravery (recklessness) perhaps.
Corwen Surefoot |
Sorry, didn't spot those dimensions... Ok, sounds too risky.
Corwen grabs a largish pouch from his backpack and hurls it down at the beast.
Ranged touch attack with a tanglefoot bag. Not sure on the exact distance to the target, so I'll leave it to you apply those negatives.
Tanglefoot bag: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Rowan Gideon |
"Ikit, are you ready to get out of here?" Rowan asks softly as he grins at his next idea. He wondered if the small ratfolk would appreciate the irony.
"I'm going to shift into a large cat, after that I want you to hold on tightly to my back and we will climb out of here. Ready?"
As soon as Ikit replies, Rowan will wildshape into a jaguar.
Ikit the White |
i think we work on initiative... but will see how it goes... i hope he sees you change...

Rowan, can you please update your alias like everyone else to have the quick stats available in a spoiler?
Felix Sebastian Orlovsky |
I will get that updated presently. I need to take her apart and redo all the math to make sure what is where since we hand waved the negative levels.
Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Shimmer lightly perches on the edge of the pit and watches as the others do there thing. As the druid retreats with their friend a scorching smell permeates the area as shimmer brings a blazing sphere of fire in to existence in order to cover their escape.

@Corwen, sure
Corwen, balancing precariously on the only patch of solid ground he's found, pulls a tangle foot bag out and throws it at the thylacine. The bag bursts open under the creature's feet and entangles it, causing it to yip in alarm and start biting at the entangling goo.
It begins biting with more frantic measures when the ball of fire appears.
Rowan Gideon |
I'll keep my actions as posted above for rounds 2 and 3. I'll also my alias when I go on my lunch break in a few hours.

Ikit wil drop a smoke bomb after he gets onto the cat creature thing. It should fill the entire hole with smoke

Stats updated. For the climb check, jaguars have a climb speed of 20 ft therefore able to take 10 on climb checks even when rushed or threatened. So my climb check would be 10 + 8 for climb speed +3 for my current skill bonus = 21.
Just in case you want me to roll anyways

Rowan manages to get Ikit out of the pit without either being eaten.
The thylacine continues snapping at the goo with near frantic levels of fear as Shimmer's ball of flame hovers nearby.

"It's okay to put the flame out, Felicia. Thank you for the protection." Rowan says as he shifts back into human form. He nods in agreement to Corwin, "I like being full of surprises. This one I can only pull off a few times per day but I'm getting better at it."
Turning to Dante, he asks. "How much time could we spare so that I can catch this beauty a meal? This is a thylacine, or an ancient relation to it, and they are quite rare. I don't want to see them killed off."
Corwen Surefoot |
Corwen frowns at Rowan's suggestion. "The creature has fallen into a pit trap. A feed will do no more'n prolong its death by starvation. Better - kinder - to put it out of its misery quick, like. Buying it a couple more days of life in a hole in the ground? If it could speak, it wouldn't thank you for that." His tone isn't derisive, condescending, or superior, merely matter-of-fact. Indeed, as he peers into the gloom of the pit at the thylacine, a shadow - of pity, perhaps? - flashes across his features for but a moment, before it passes.
Rowan Gideon |
"I understand what you are saying. After I feed it, I plan on having a talk with it. I want to know more about these animals and perhaps tame it. Maybe convince it to become a guardian for the dryad you guys helped earlier or the nixie if it chooses to stay wild."
Felix Sebastian Orlovsky |
Shimmer moves he flame as far from the beast as she can and let's it expire."Sadly it does not just go out, the flames have to burn themselves away on there own."
After giving it a brief few seconds to burn out."As far as I know, we have not set a runner ahead to announce are arrival to the centaur. I see no issue with taking our time with getting the little fellow out of the hole."
Dante Skyborn |
Dante looks at his group sternly for a moment, considering his words.
Trusting his Druidic friend he says. "Very well Rowan. But make haste. We cannot divert ourselves from the mission overlong for the sake of one wounded animal."
The Iron clad general jumps down from his horse and moves a few paces off to relieve himself.
Corwen Surefoot |
Corwen has to restrain himself from giving a nervous laugh at Shimmer's words. "Little fellow?" That's the biggest dog I've ever seen!
After Dante gives his nod to Rowan, Corwen considers the beast thoughtfully. "Right. So how do we do this? Can you calm the creature down?" he asks Rowan.
Rowan Gideon |
"Most likely not as it is now. I'll take Argos with me and hunt something down for it to eat. After that, I'll see what I can do. I'll be back soon."
Rowan then waves and takes off at a fast trot, his faithful canine bounding ahead into the brush.
