Less than a few months into your careers as Pathfinders, the Society sends you to the edge of the known world and to Kalsgard, the greatest city in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. You each received brief orders hastily scrawled on parchment scraps.

Important discovery. Rendez-vous with V.C. Benarry aboard Grinning Pixie in Kalsgard. She'll explain details. Travel swift, travel safe. Good luck.

You're beginning to realize that being a pathfinder is mostly leg- and paper-work, and you spend the next few weeks sailing, hiking, riding, and carting your way to the north-eastern corner of the map, perhaps glad for the presence of your companions, if only to break up the monotony.

This would be a good time to condense weeks and months of exploration into a few moments of self-introduction!

Gregor squinted against the wind blowing in his face, and reached a hand down to rest it on the neck of his ever present companion. There weren't a lot of dwarven druids in the world, he knew, but as a young dwarf he'd been called to the profession. His latest companion, the young black bear named Ironclaw, had been with him less than a year, and already had taken serious wounds as part of his devotion to his master. Sometimes that pained Gregor, but usually he was just relieved that the bear hadn't been killed. Especially that last major job on the Hydra's Fang.

The sandy-haired dwarf smiled slightly at the time since. The Pathfinders were a good fit for one as inquisitive and generally good as Gregor, but working for them could certainly be boring. Travel, paperwork, and the telling of the same stories over and over with your fellow Pathfinders wasn't exactly what he lived for. Still, there were some things that made it worthwhile, and he really couldn't see himself settling in to guard a shrine in the woods. That just wasn't what Erastil had in mind for him.

He did wonder what was in store for him on this mission, though, and about the people he was partnered with. He looked around at the others, wondering what was going through their minds.

Balooo was glad to be coming back to his homelands. The so-called civilized people in Absalom were alright for the most part, but it was not the same and it was unusually warm there. Those his current group seemed to be more like-minded. The dwarf and his brother bear reminded him of his tribe who also lived in harmony with ursine, treating them more like family than pets or mounts. He tossed a bit of his rations at the bear known as Ironclaw with a friendly nod.

Ironclaw looked up at Gregor as the man tossed him a morsel to eat. The dwarf smiled, and that was all the sign the bear needed. He scarfed up the bit, snuffling around to make sure he didn't miss anything good. The man was good people, apparently, knowing when to feed a hungry bear.

Rogzul and Grizak, his mule, follow closely behind his companions, embracing a chance to be out in the wilderness again. When he'd been exiled he thought he would find his place among the other races, but the wild nature of the Orcs always called back to him, and at least while traveling he could forget that he wasn't still home, and for this adventure he seemed to have some like minded company.

With a shrill whistle he called Kashag to his side. As the hawk decended and landed on Grizak's back, the strange patterns on his skin were visible to all. Rogzul studied them for a moment.

Leg- and paper- work: those things Nicholas was actually good at. During the weeks of travel he kept returning to the memory of feeling proud at receiving the Venture-Captain's orders so soon after taking his first steps in the Society. Surely, he thought, his sharp intellect, uncannily broad skill set, classical education and dignified manners must have excelled even by Pathfinder standards, for him to be selected for reporting on an important (if remote) discovery alongside the best of Pathfinder breed!

Awoken from his daydreaming by the loud slurping noises of an eating bear, he stared at the animal for a while, nonplussed.
What in Aroden's name am I doing in the middle of nowhere in the company of a hairy, smelly omnivore and his bear, several uncivilized savages, at least one of whom is overconfident in his vocal abilities, and a bloody orc?! By the Inheritor's shiny buttocks, this discovery must be no less than the next Starstone for me to not regret signing up for this. I'll consider myself lucky to get back with all my fingers intact from frostbite.

Realizing that this inner rant might have left him a bit more slack-jawed that is usually appropriate (at least by non-bear standards), he tried to put back his trained courteous smile as best as he could.
"We must indeed be getting closer to the Linnorm Kingdoms. The air is getting chilly and the coniferous trees become more common, with moss covering their northern sides."

The barbarian in your midst's does not say much during the exploration but when he does speak he speaks loudly. "I WAS SIRED HERE IN THESE LANDS. I LEFT FOR A REASON."
During the groups travels if they pass by a body of water Yakanzi will take a moment to jump in and swim around, regardless of the temperature, calling it his bath time. He will spend most of his time with his countryman Baloo, although he does not say much when Baloo talks, just grunts in acknowledgment. Or he will spend time with Rogzul since they both share a primitive nature. For some reason the dwarf wont let Yakanzi ride the bear for fun...

Nicholas shivered. Even this land's native people find reasons to leave and not return. Someday, there will be just linnorms left for the kings to rule.
"With any luck, we won't have to stay for long. We find whatever it is the Society has discovered; document it or maybe take it with us, and return for our next assignment. Since you have been brought up in these parts, can you navigate the area well? The faster we find the path to our target, the sooner we get this over with."

"You do not trust me. I know the stars. I know the wild. I can bring us to Kalsgard." The halforc doesn't seem offended, more unsurprised. As though he's used to having his competence questioned. Such is the life of a half breed after all.

Gregor smiled at the banter around him. Yakanzi in particular seemed to want to constantly tease him about Ironclaw, asking to ride or wrestle the bear. As if bears were meant for such things. No, it was all in good fun, and he would take it that way. The dwarven druid had an affable nature, and was wont to take such things cheerfully anyways.

"Perhaps instead, Yakanzi, Ironclaw can ride on you? It would do his paws well to get off the ground for a while, and he could easily climb up. Like climbing a tree." He made claws with his fingers and mimed using them to climb a tree.

When Nicholas asked about their position relative to Kalsgard, Gregor looked around and shrugged at Rogzul. "I trust you know the way better than I. Ironclaw and I have never been this far north before, and the sky seems different somehow."

As Balooo tossed another morsel of food to Ironclaw, Gregor nodded to the bear. He had learned early on that bears would eat anything, and a growing bear was always hungry. It wouldn't hurt for him to have a bite of trail rations every now and then, and it was good for the others to see Ironclaw as more than a fur pelt that could sometimes stand between them and danger. Not like that last crew, he thought sourly.

"I trust you Rogzul. You are leading us the right way."

Rogzul does indeed determine that the first long leg of their journey is nearly at its end, and before nightfall you can see the city crest over the north-eastern horizon. However, your business is not with the city tonight, or at least not yet. As you arrive at the gates, now lit by lamp and torch rather than the long-settled sun, you are intercepted by a nondescript man bearing a wayfinder. He identifies himself as a pathfinder working under V.C. Calisro Benarry on the Grinning Pixie, and bids you follow him.

You cut a half-hour's journey through calm, black water and frigid air before alighting on the Pixie. Benarry's floating lodge is a handsomely appointed vessel, well-at-home on open waters but ill-at-ease in any ports whose harbour masters look unfavorably on former pirates. As such, Benarry tends not to dock, instead anchoring off-shore and exchanging passengers, crew, and goods by rowboat. You are helped up a mass of rigging rolled over the pixies port side as an impromptu ladder and, now chilled, damp, and salty, greeted by the captain herself. She bids you follow her to a warmer milieu.

The half-orc shivers as she strides in to her well-furnished cabin and out of the bitter winds. A Varki woman clad in leathers and a snow leopard fur coat is already seated inside the cabin. “Welcome to the Linnorm Kingdoms,” says Benarry. She takes a long drag from a hip flask before continuing. “The North is no place for a free captain, but here we are. Oh, Kalsgard is fine—they’ve got stiff drink here—but you’ve got to head inland, where it’s even colder.” She pulls her mammoth-fur coat tighter across her body as she continues. “I hope you all weren’t planning to freeze to death and packed for the weather. If not, my quartermaster will be pleased to provide such - at a fair price, of course.”

Selection is anything mundane or alchemical and magical up to 2500, though still bound by chronicle selection or fame limit

“You’ve all heard of Jormurdun? Well, that dwarven sky citadel
contained an artifact called the Sky Key. King Gutheran broke it into five pieces and gave four of them to his heirs as they fled the invasion, keeping the fifth for himself. One of Gutheran’s heirs, Naldak, traveled into what is now southwestern Irrisen and established a small town called Naldak’s Point. That’s where the trail goes cold. Most likely, Baba Yaga wiped them out when she invaded. The piece of the Sky Key and the ruins of Naldak’s Point are probably buried under a millennium of ice and snow, just waiting for someone—you—to go dig them out. I’ve packed you ten blocks of blackfire clay to make the task more manageable,”
the venture-captain says, handing over a backpack stuffed with black bricks. “Don’t forget to take these with you.”

“You’re heading east, up the Rimeflow and Thundering Rivers, past the Grungir Forest, and into Irrisen. Desna smiles — the site is about half a day’s hike north of Dalun, a small trade city on the Irrisen border. Take a small river boat packed with supplies and a letter of trade, make nice with the city officials, and see if you can get permission to travel inland. Head to the site and find our missing Sky Key piece. You’ll know you’re on the right track if you recover signs that the royal family settled there."

"Watch yourselves in Irrisen. Antagonizing the locals is like poking a sleeping ice bear in the eye, except it won’t kill you as quickly. The Society is not especially welcome in Irrisen, so try to keep what friends we have, and if you can, make new ones. With that it mind, I’ve hired a local to bring you safely to Dalun.” Venture-Captain Benarry gestures toward the Varki woman. “This is Haltani, and she will guide you into and out of Irrisen alive.”

The Varki woman springs to her feet gracefully and addresses the party. “It is always a pleasure to meet travelers from faraway lands. It is true that Irrisen is a harsher land than most. Keep your wits about you, and your journey should be fruitful.”

Benarry grunts in acknowledgement. "Any questions?" she asks.

Knowledge (history) - Irrisen

15+:
Irrisen has a violent history with all of its neighbors, but especially with the Ulfen from the Linnorm Kingdoms. Jadwiga sometimes capture and enslave Ulfen people.

20+:
Baba Yaga and an army of monsters, including
ice trolls, winter wolves, and evil fey, invaded the eastern
portion of the Land of the Linnorm Kings in 3313 AR. They
took only 23 days to conquer the entire region now known
as Irrisen.

25+:
Every 100 years, Baba Yaga returns to Golarion and
replaces the current queen with a new one. She takes the
old queen away with her in a magical hut that stands on a
pair of chicken legs. No one really knows where Baba Yaga
takes the monarchs or why they never return.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy (gather information) - Modern Irrisen

15+:
Irrisen is known as the Land of Eternal Winter, as it stays freezing year round. Powerful witches known as the White Witches rule the nation and allow monsters the same rights as humanoids. The human descendants of Baba Yaga are called Jadwiga, and are the aristocracy of Irrisen. Ulfen people who find themselves in Irrisen at the bottom of the social hierarchy; the fortunate are serfs, and the rest are slaves.

20+:
Intelligent monstrous races, such as ice trolls and winter wolves, are citizens in Irrisen. Though not as socially powerful as the Jadwiga, they command considerable respect and are often able to do as they please without consequence.

25+:
Recently, some younger Jadwiga have begun to question the insular culture and closed borders of Irrisen. They seek to learn about peoples outside of Irrisen, the more “exotic” the better. The White Witches have dubbed them the stilyagi, or “culture crows,” as they disregard the culture of Irrisen and mimic the cultures of other foreign lands. However, because they rarely have the opportunity to interact with foreigners, their depictions are often wildly outdated, stereotypical, and even downright offensive.

He shivered and jumped up and down at one place.
"I don't really have any cold gear on me... But don't worry, I can quickly brew something up to keep me warm" - he nodded in the direction of Benarri's flask.
Nicholas is going to prepare an extract of Endure Elements and leave the other slot blank for now.

"As for the questions... Is anyone else aware of this Sky Key piece location? Do we expect anyone to be protecting it or hunting it? Or it's just the local bigots and wildlife between us and the artifact?"

Haltani chuckles at Rogzul's casual courage. “What is your homeland? By familiarity it would seem safe to you, and by proximity our lands may seem similar, but do not be fooled. Air is familiar. Water is familiar. Each on their own is safe, even necessary. But here, in Irrisen, the night-time air can steal your breath or frost your flesh until it sloughs off the bone. Stand upon a frozen lake and tell me you don't fear the water. That air is Irrisen's soul, the ice our borders. The land itself is dangerous, even if we've carved out safe havens for ourselves. We live among savage creatures because we all know the endless winter to be a greater threat."

"As for your question," she says, turning to Nicholas, "I know the greater contours of the land, not our destination. I can guide you to Dalun under the guise of traders. Anything beyond that is also beyond my knowing. I defer to your captain in this matter."

"Hrmph," grunts V.C. Benarry. "I've got nothing to add. I could tell you we've no word of other interested parties, but even novices might know the worth of such guesses by now. As always, be prepared. I think that's about it. Eat up, rest, and be ready to make final purchases and preparations to sail out tomorrow morning. The quartermaster will set you all up with dried meat rations and clean water, if necessary. Considering normal naval standards, you should consider yourselves lucky. Dismissed."

Nicholas slowly headed towards the cabin exit, looking to be deep in though about something. Opening the door, he turned around on his heels.
"Just one more thing, if I may - you mentioned that we should be looking for signs of a royal family. What exactly did you have in mind - fine silverware thrown around, or perhaps did Naldak have some sort of clan symbol that would be present in his quarters?"

After receiving the answer, he takes his leave but still seems to be troubled by something. Some time later, as Haltani is about to bid them good night and go about her business, he halts her.
"Look, are you sure your plan's going to work? Trader disguise seems like a good idea on the surface, but half of our group is Ulfen. And the city officials in Dalun, who are supposed to give us access to the site, would be Jadwiga, as all officials in Irrisen, right? According to the information I had, Jadwiga and their cronies treat these people as little more than talking livestock; what sort of goods would they be willing to trade with us?"

"Yes, he is correct. Trolls and Winterwolves are treated better there."

The venture-captain and the guide answers Nicholas' questions in tandem on the party's way out.

"The dwarves of yesteryear may have been dour folk," says Benarry, "but their royals were still fond of badges of their office. Look for jewelry stamped with the appropriate imagery."

Haltani joins in. "As for your other question, while free Ulfen are... mistrusted, an isolating winter can make a people desperate for anything from the outside world. Sometimes this means stories and legends. More pertinently, it also means trade. There's enough of a hunger that your letters of trade should see you safely to Dalun."

The next morning, the Pixie's crew unceremoniously offload the party onto the smaller boat they'll be taking up-river. V.C. Benarry hands one of you a backpack containing letters of trade, 10 bricks of blackfire clay, and a rough map of Irrisen and a best guess at your destination. "This river is your open road for a little while, Pathfinders," she says as you're setting. "Luck be with you. Make us proud."

Haltani steers the ship by day, with all of you helping as able under her direction. She notes that the trip to Dalun will take several weeks, but the intervening lands are relatively quiet. Between furs and a modest fire, you need not fear the frost just yet.

As the boat waits at anchor each night, Haltani approaches some of you, curious about your adventures and travels.

I think this'd be easiest for me to handle over PM. If you're going to be approached, I'll be sending you a PM in the next 24 hours.

"There is also the fact that several of us are, in fact, no Ulfen. If needs be, we can present the non-Ulfens as the trade faction, and the Ulfens simply as road guards we hired for the journey. I do not believe that is an uncommon practice." Gregor wondered somewhat about this group's ability to be sneaky. He himself wasn't especially gifted at such things, and some of the others even less so. Still, there were some fast talkers in the group, and if left to their own devices, perhaps...

It was difficult to get Ironclaw to settle in on shipboard life. The bear was trained not to defecate indoors, but the entire ship was effectively indoors. Leaning out on the stays and voiding into the water wasn't exactly possible for the young bear, and it was difficult to convince the others to stop their progress two times a day so the bear could go ashore. Finally, he settled on the expediency of using his gift with animals to convince Ironclaw that pooping next to the mule wouldn't hurt either of them. Of course, he still had to convince the mule, but that wasn't too difficult. He shared the cleanup duties with Rozgul, and wished fervently that their boat trip would end soon.

One night the others see Haltani approach Yakanzi for some sort of friendly discussion...

It should be confirmed if it hasn't been guessed that Haltani does not pay Baloo or Huron a visit.

Haltani joins Nicholas one chilly morning as he prepares his extracts, obviously intrigued by all the fancy glassware and colorful smokes. They chat for some time, and while at first Nicholas feels like an academy professor, as the conversation topics change, he wonders if he's the one being examined.

Gregor also chats with Halatani while helping to prepare meals. The guide asked a number of interesting questions, and seemed far more interested in what the dwarf didn't say than what he did.

I realize now that you can't roll in private messages. Apologies. Gregor, Nature might have the highest modifier for you, but as you are untrained, you cannot surpass 10.

A couple of weeks into your journey, you arrive at the border of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings and Irrisen proper. Haltani appears a bit relieved, perhaps for knowing more about her traveling companions, as she announces the approach, but warns of rough waters ahead.

A bend in the river and several large rocks cause white-water rapids across most of the water’s breadth; only a narrow channel with a swift current flows without obstruction near the southern bank. Tall trees grow on either shore, casting shadows with their large overhanging branches.

As you draw near, some of you might notice ropes jutting out from the waters ahead.

Perception DC 15:
There is a net, large enough to ensnare the ship, lying on the riverbed at the only point you can pass the rocks. Rope lines seem to secure it to the tree branches overhead. It is likely someone has set an ambush here. No one can help avoid this trap, as no party member is commanding the boat, but all who make this check get a +4 circumstance bonus to their reflex saves later.

Language (Skald):
You hear a voice shout out, "Alright! Cut it!"

Profession (Sailor): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

You hear the whirring of rope strung through pulleys in the boughs above as the net lurches upwards. Haltani spots the ruse too late; she wrenches the rudder hard to port, but the boat is caught. It jerks two feet up as the net suspends it partially out of the water.

DC 15 reflex save to avoid falling prone.

Two Ulfen appear from the underbrush on the southern river bank. One of them calls out to you in accented Common, "Halt, travelers! You travel through Whitetook territory. This is an inspection! Offer no resistance, and we'll offer no aggression!"

Their weapons are sheathed.

Gregor saw the net and growled a warning. Unfortunately, in his haste, he called out in druidic, and only his ursine companion understood his words. Gregor reached out a had and clasped the fur on the ruff of the bear as Ironclaw sunk his claws into the boat's deck. As the boat slammed into the net, he and the bear held fast, as gear and some of their companions slid across the deck.
