GM BrOp |
I'm assuming by "it" you mean the small side-room. If not, please let me know.
Mandraiv carefully looks around the small side room, but it seems to be empty, although it seems to have once been used for storage, judging from the wood chips and strands of burlap.
Mandraiv Gaborza |
Yep, you got it.
Mandraiv returns to the group, closing the doors to the rooms behind him as he does. He says, "If nothing else we now have food we should be able to eat without problems."
IIRC there was another door coming off the dinning area. Mandraiv will check that out as per usual.
GM BrOp |
The was a corridor off the "dining room" that led back to the main corridor (basically, the room had two hallways entrances). The only way you haven't explored is the corridor that continues on past this storage room and the dining room.
GM BrOp |
Updated. I believe you've checked out the dining room already, but if you did, it's been a while, so ...
A gigantic table sits in the middle of this room, with huge tree stumps around it for chairs. The carcass of a large boar rests in the center of the table, flies buzzing around it. Several golden amulets of some sort are draped around the neck of the felled beast.
GM BrOp |
The amulets look to be made of gold, but upon closer inspection are just gold-plated, and not even particularly well. They are each embossed with a large, capital "B". Judging by their size and the length of their chains, they are sized for creatures larger than humans.
GM BrOp |
The party moves on to the room to the east. It is large and rectangular, at least 15' by 20'. The eastern wall is covered by a huge tapestry that stretches its entire length, all but obscuring a small passageway behind it. The tapestry depicts Bargle, looming like a giant over the ruins of this castle with all the surrounding lands set ablaze.
The room look otherwise empty.
GM BrOp |
As Mandraiv moves aside the tapestry to enter the connecting corridor, the image of Bargle seems to momentarily come to life. On second glance, it appears simply that the wall hanging shifts like a living creature. It first separates itself into two pieces that detach themselves from their supports and fall down upon the unlucky warlock. Mandraiv instinctively jumps back out of the first one's grasp, but is not quite quick enough for the second. The tapestry creature envelopes him and begins to squeeze, cutting off all light and air.
Tapestry 1 attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Tapestry 2 attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Mandraiv is now grappled, restrained, blinded, and suffocating, although he has 9 more rounds of air left before he really has to worry about it.
Initiative!
Aredhel: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Artius: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Imsh: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Mandraiv: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Oso: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Monster: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Aredhel Morgethai |
Aredhel dashes forward with a surprised yell, intent on destroying the tapestry before it can harm the warlock.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 That's a crit!
Damage: 4d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 3) + 3 = 20
GM BrOp |
Aredhel, there are two of these tapestries. Which one are you attacking? The one that has Mandraiv or the one that is lying half-crumpled next to it (the one that missed)?
Mandraiv Gaborza |
Mandraiv struggles to free himself from the creature's grip.
Strength (Athletics) check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Mandraiv would have had his pact blade in the form of a glaive. He will drop his pact blade in order to try to struggle free of the creature.
Artius of Egorian |
Teeming up with Imsh, Artius steps up to slash at the crumpled tapestry on the floor with both swords.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23;Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Off-hand Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18;Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Oso Legumbe |
Oso charges in too and produces a wild swing at the tapestry on the ground, leaving himself open to attack.
I'm guessing Mandraiv is pretty much surrounded by the rest already. Mpve then reckless attack to offset fatigue. longsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19, damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
GM BrOp |
ROUND 2
Aredhel swings her mighty sword at the creature clutching Mandraiv, and makes a clean slice through the fabric. The warlock lets out a muffled cry of pain, as the blow seems to have harmed both of them!
Mandraiv takes 10 hp of damage.
Imsh runs up and attempts to smash the prone tapestry, but the magically animated object flies up and out of his reach.
Artius has more luck as his bold, swift cuts tear through the wall hanging's fabric.
The carpet holding Mandraiv continues to constrict the warlock. The second half of the tapestry, having evaded Imsh grasp, attempts to envelop the half-orc, but its movements are clumsy and easily avoided. Tapestry attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The coils of the tapestry squeeze Mandraiv and he feels some ribs cracking. The damage happens at the beginning of the "target's turn", which means it happens before Mandraiv extricates himself. Squeezing damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 1) + 3 = 8
With tremendous effort, Mandraiv throws off the tapestry, which coils itself against the wall like a cobra ready to strike. Successful Strength (Athletics) check.
Finally, Oso moves in and lands another tearing cut on the tapestry that Imsh and Artius are fighting.
Aredhel, Imsh, and Artius are up! To make it simple, any PC can strike at either tapestry.
Mandraiv Gaborza |
If I took 10 pts of damage from Aredhel's attack, and then 8 more points of damage from the tapestry before I could act, then I should have been at 0 hit points (exactly) before I got the chance to do anything. So I should arguably be unconscious in the tapestry.
Aredhel Morgethai |
Aredhel recoils as her blow damages Mandraiv within the tapestry, shocked to her senses by the sight of his blood.
"Damn! Mandraiv! I - " She clamps her mouth shut, and dropping her blade rushes forward to try and yank the tapestry free of his body.
Not sure what system to use here.
GM BrOp |
Not sure what system to use here.
I'd say making a Strength (Athletics) check would be useful in prying Mandraiv's unconscious body out of the tapestry.
GM BrOp |
Despite her best efforts, Aredhel is unable to untwist the incredibly strong, coiling tapestry from around Mandraiv's still body.
Imsh the Pious |
Imsh moves over to where Aredhel is trying to free Mandraiv from the tapestry. He adds his strength to try and free his friend, while under his breath he calls upon the healing powers of his god to restore consciousness to Mandraiv.
Healing Word: 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 3) + 3 = 9 *cast at second level
Does this give Aredhel advantage to freeing Mandraiv?
GM BrOp |
Artius cuts the free tapestry to ribbons with his weapons. Now deprived of its coherence, its magic fails.
The second tapestry lifts Mandraiv into the air and attempt to move him away, with Aredhel and Imsh still hanging on to it.
The tapestry makes a Strength check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Opposed by Aredhel's Strength check (with Advantage thanks to Imsh): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12,1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Though both are hanging on to their friend, the force of the animated tapestry yanks Mandraiv out of their reach, darting with him at high speed through the open doorway and out of sight into another room.
The Party is Up!
Aredhel Morgethai |
Aredhel actually snarls in anger as she snatches up her greatsword and runs after the departing tapestry.
Should she reach it, she once again tries to free her companion. Advantage roll in case Imsh joins her.
Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
*face palm*
Imsh the Pious |
Unfortunately you are rolling as well as I usually do!
Imsh follows the elf warrior after the wayward tapestry, once again attempting to help her free their companion.
With the healing I provided, can Mandraiv try to break free with advantage now?
GM BrOp |
Aredhel grabs her sword and chases the flying carpet into the next room. She finds that it has deposited the now conscious and writhing Mandraiv on some kind of altar. An altar to Bargle.
In the center of the north wall (you came in through the western wall) is a black altar lit by red candles. Above the altar is a painting of Bargle, and numerous trinkets and offerings are spread around the base.
Aredhel pulls at the tapestry still holding Mandraiv, but they are unable to free him.
Everyone else can post (other than Aredhel and Imsh, who already did, obv). At the beginning of his action, Mandraiv will take another 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 3) + 3 = 8 points of bludgeoning damage.
Artius of Egorian |
Artius pursues the tapestry into the next room, holding his attack so as not to harm Mandraiv.
If possible, I'll ready an action to slash the tapestry as soon as Mandraiv is free - whether by his own efforts or thanks to the others.
Readied Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8;Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Oso Legumbe |
Oso moves to help Mandraiv, the tired Garundi pulls hard at one corner of the tapestry. His trembling muscles makes the effort more difficult.
Strength (Athletics): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Strength (Athletics): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
His iron grip tightens on the material.
Is that enough? Oso needs a long rest after this....
GM BrOp |
The tapestry engulfing Mandraiv once again puts the squeeze on him. The sound of bones snapping can clearly be heard through the fabric. Tapestry damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 5) + 3 = 10, Mandraiv is now at 0 hp again.
With great effort, Oso peels the tapestry off Mandraiv, who flops lifelessly onto the strange altar.
Artius sees an opening and slashes at the animated object with this sword, but it yanks itself away from him, spilling the warlock on the floor in the process.
The tapestry then flings itself at Artius. The fighter can offer little defense, as he is trapped within it. Tapestry attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
The party is up!
Artius of Egorian |
Ability Check: 1d20 ⇒ 16
That's an 18 athletics or a 20 acrobatics, if I can use that instead. I'll then use my second wind as a bonus action, presuming I've taken some constriction damage before my attempted escape.
Second Wind: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
GM BrOp |
The tapestry squeezes Artius as he struggles to escape. Tapestry damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4) + 3 = 8
Struggling mightily, the fighter then frees himself from his woven cocoon.
Oso, Imsh, and Aredhel are up!
Oso Legumbe |
Oso tries to take hold of the tapestry with a loud howl, that ululates across the room. He pulls hard with an iron grip.
Strength(Athletics): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Strength(Athletics): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
But his sweaty fingers slip off the material as it whips and weaves around the fighter.
GM BrOp |
Imsh brings Mandraiv back from the brink of death again.
The warlock fires an eldritch blast at the tapestry, but vision is still blurred from his recent trauma, and the shot goes wide.
Oso, Artius had already freed himself, so I'll count those rolls as your attack.
With a few quick swings, the barbarian and Aredhel finish off the tapestry, tearing at it until it stops moving.
Combat is over.
Mandraiv Gaborza |
Mandraiv breathes a sigh of relief and says, "I'm glad that's over. Looks like Bargle wanted to promote himself to godhood."
Mandraiv summons his pact blade as a longsword and sheaths it. He looks the room and the altar over.
Perception check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
GM BrOp |
Checking out the altar, Mandraiv notices that there are are numerous coins spread around it like an offering. They total up to around 5 gp, 4 sp. Other, less lucrative-looking items include a dead rat, two fingers from either a gnome or a halfling, and an opaque bottle with a stopper in it.
The room contains two other doors, one to the east and one to the south.
Sorry for the unannounced absence. I went on a short vacation with my family followed by Independence Day. If that happens again, please feel free to PM me. I get caught up in RL sometimes, but it really is not hard to "stop in here" and let you all know what is going on. My apologies again.
