Vakase |
Pretty sure the ecstatic cries of a hot & bothered halfling should scare away any random encounters. Or at least make them feel really awkward. :D
After Vakase has summoned back her Raven and completed her commune with her patron, she instructs Elsa to maintain a high perch and fly a 100' perimeter patrol every 10 minutes.
The sentinel raven doesn't require sleep and will awaken Vakase with a bonus action so long as they're within 100' of each other.
Rurik Irongut |
Rurik takes first watch, knowing that he needs fairly continuous sleep to recharge his magical reserves, and also because when he sleeps, he is horribly difficult to wake up.
When the group begins to rise, Rurik shoos away any who check on him with a call of "5 more minutes". Eventually, begrudgingly, he commences with his morning rituals both of hygene and magical prayer. He is pleased to find his magical reserves a bit more robust after such harrowing adventures.
GM Niles |
Since no one specified "where" you were gonna stay, for the sake of moving us along I'm gonna pick the most defensible spot (A6) which was previously haunted, but isn't anymore. I'll also pick watches because you guys didn't specify that either.

1d20 ⇒ 8 Well, nope.
So, at one point in the night during Davin's watch something was moving beyond the barricaded door to A6. Fortunately, whatever it was moved along and didn't bother you.
Long Rest Over, use HD if you wish. Let me know when you are all ready to proceed to the tunnel
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
I thought you recovered all HP with along rest without the need for using JD?
Hack goes, to the hallway opening, and he peers down.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
GM Niles |
@Hack yes you are correct. Full hp renewal in a long rest
Hack peers down the tunnel and sees.
A pair of low barricades made of timbers and rocks partially block the passageway, which opens into a larger cave beyond
The barricade would need to be dissembled or climbed over to proceed.
Vakase |
Including previous action of casting false life and previous perception roll for the raven (16).
"Well, that looks like a job for one of you big, strong boys, doesn't it?" Vakase quips before turning to her raven.
"Alright Elsa, my dear, let's see if you can't get through that opening. You stay up as high as you can this time and first sign of anything you come right back to me, got it? I don't want to have to summon you back from the Shadow realm again."
She sends the raven to fly ahead so she can see and hear through it.
Davin Grey |
"Yeah, unfortunately smoke also comes with fire, and being underground smoke can be a bit of a problem! Lets try it the hard way first...just keep an eye out for whatever made this barrier."
Davin moves cautiously forward to the barricade and, if nothing jumps out and tries to eat him, he begins to dismantle the structure.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
GM Niles |
Davin approaches the barrier and notices something odd... the top of the barricade is rigged to drop large stones from the ceiling if it is disturbed. Someone turned the barricade into a trap! Davin is sure that with some deft maneuvering he could disable this trap.
Dex check (Thieves Tools) or just a Dex check DC 12
GM Niles |
Davin saves his allies from being harmed and the barricade is dismantled.
The Heroes enter the cave and
This large cave appears t o have b e e n recently scratched from the hard - packed earth, and its ceiling is only five feet high. Several tons of debris fill the western portion of the cave. What appears to be the body of a man lies half buried under the rubble near the north end of the cave.
contains a silver key and a brass key. Nearby are two more kobold bodies, each grasping a spade.
Vakase |
Vakase calls back Elsa and takes a look at the body.
Investigation: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
"He's human, whomever he was. Looks to be fairly old and had fine clothes. And he had these."
She holds up a key ring with a silver key and a brass key.
"There's a couple dead kobolds over here too, each holding a spade. Could it be they were digging for something when the cave collapsed? This might have been tied to the explosion that collapsed the tower."
"Rurik, you lived around dwarves. Any insight on how this collapsed?"
Kara the Silvertongue |
"What's that, Davin? Someone has lain a trap with all that fragile, combustable wood?? Hey, I know, how about we all just stand back here safe and sound and I'll just burn--oh. You, you're just gonna just disable it and take away the thing that pulsl the string and does the thing, huh? Well...okay. But next time we do it my way!
Awwww" Kara exclaims as she roots around the corpse and finds nothing else of value. "Man, how come all the corpses we find never have nuffin good. Are we just not setting enough things on fire? Yeah, it's probably that."
Rurik Irongut |
Thinking: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Aye, ah have, but there ken be all sorts o reasons a tunnel could collapse: poor supports, improper weight distribution, traps, different minerals, and more. Looking over the rubble as requested for a few moments, the rotund man comes to the realization..They coulda been digging and cause the collapse, but odd for an old man in fine cloths to be workin the earth. Ifn I had ta guess, I'd wager he be runnin from something an them kobolds with shovels dropped the ceiling on him and they got more than they bargained fer.
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
While there are not necessarily "trained skills" to the exclusion of attempting all others, you can, and should remember to, add your proficiency bonus as well as your ability modifier to select skills with which you are proficient.
Vakase |
"Possibly to stop this man and the kobolds from finding something?"
"So do we search further or report back on what we've found thus far?"
GM Niles |
@Kartoss Yep, the tunnel goes further north.
Vakase remembers vaguely that the Baroness mentioned something about the Wizard Hunclay being missing, or unavailable. Perhaps this dead man might be the aforementioned Hunclay.
Rurik Irongut |
A moment please. asks Rurik, as be beings a short rite of passage for the mans soul. Once complete, he turns to the group, Very well, lets be off.
Vakase |
"So if the dead man might be the missing wizard Hunclay, what was he looking for down here? This looks like it was a deliberate attempt to stop him."
"I agree we need to press on."
Vakase has the keys found on his body.
GM Niles |
Davin and Kartoss lead the heroes further into the cavern. They are using a Light cantrip from Rurik to proceed. As they turn the corner, arrows fly out of the darkness ahead at them!
