Like, if your mystic is doing proper non-magical psychic disciplines then it wouldn't feel right having them fight a mind flayer straight out of the monster manual who has "psionic spellcasting" ;)

I don't want to make more work for you, but if you are ok with it, I think this could be a fun character to try:

Krieger Stoneheart - NG male deep gnome awakened mystic, urban bounty hunter background (SCAG)

The svirfneblin of the Stoneheart Clan were well known for their stoic dispositions. They often seemed cold and heartless at first meeting, but others who knew them well understood that it actually was a reaction to the harsh reality of the Underdark. Deep in the caverns, it is easy to grow fearful of every noise and paranoid of every traveler. The Stonehearts, however, were like the stone under a waterfall - just letting it all slide off of them. They mined and performed their duty, and knew no fear. A founding philosophy of the clan is that one can often choose how they live but rarely choose how they die.

And died they did. When dark elf necromancers, focused on conquest marched an undead legion to the surface, the Stoneheart Clan's village was in their path. They were nothing more than a minor inconvenience that briefly slowed the undead army. As a band of adventurers who were seeking to stop the dark elf-led legion followed close behind, they found very few survivors among the Stonehearts. They knew the village was no longer sustainable, and therefore simply left to find another svirfneblin settlement to join. All except Krieger.

A young deep gnome with a keen understanding of people, he could sense the suppressed anger and depression among his few remaining clan members. He felt it as well. Also sensing within the adventurers a determination to stop the undead army, Krieger followed them instead, talking his way into their party. A ranger named Aleanor Pathsteader in particular took a liking to the bold deep gnome. Although he was only of minor use among the powerful and experienced adventurers, Krieger was there when the dark elves and their undead were vanquished. Underneath his stoic exterior, he felt pride, and he liked it.

Although traveling with Aleanor for a while, they both realized he was out of his league. So after making sure he was settled into a nearby town, they parted ways. Krieger soon found enough small adventures to occupy himself, and even had some success being hired to find highly wanted criminals and bring them to justice. He became good enough at it that some members of the City Watch he frequently worked with wondered if he might want to join their ranks. But Krieger preferred a less rigid life. Furthermore, he became more bold and self-motivated in his pursuits of criminals including exposing a noble who enriched himself in illegal slave trade. This scandal led to his falling out of favor with the Watch. Not quite an outlaw vigilante, but certainly far from sanctioned, Krieger finds his cold demeanor, and insight into the minds of criminals and stray monsters serve him well in helping to capture or destroy the evils that lurk in shadows and in the open.

Krieger has done good things for his community by fighting the criminal and monstrous elements, but he isn't motivated by good deeds. He may not have even admitted it to himself yet, but Krieger savors overpowering, outwitting, and destroying evil. It's not even a matter of making the world a better place as much as it is a matter of Krieger no longer feeling helpless and trapped. The bigger the enemies that he defeats, the quieter the voices of doubt and fear become.
baticeer wrote:I'm going to say most likely yes (I've seen the class played before in my home game and never had any issue with it), but I'll have to take another look at the psionics system and see if it would require me to change any NPCs' abilities to function as psionics.
I will add to my earlier submission post with Kjell's relation to Aleanor Pathsteader, as I realized I forgot to mention that. She's been one of his finest companions in this new land, particularly in and around Stormport, where Kjell's adventured for the past year or so. They've fought together, drunk together, and nursed one another's wounds after hard-fought victories. Aleanor's taught Kjell about this land, its people, its customs, its history, and its dangers; for his part, Kjell's mostly lent his namesake of a strong arm to her endeavors, as well as telling her about his own homeland and sharing tips and knowledge of survival in the harsh winters—and how to properly drink good drafts.

Of course, all of this can also easily be true for any or all of the other party members, as Kjell's gregarious and joyful by nature. I imagine he might even get along with Garnult Tranhammer, hehe. At the very least he'd drink and raise a hammer with him.
Great to see so many familiar faces submitting to this game.
All of these rejected him. Though they wouldn't admit it, it was because of his fiendish heritage. Unprepared and reckless, he explored on his own. Finding an ancient library, he uncovered a tome that would ruin his life. He curled up in a ball for a day, driven insane by the arcane contents. When he emerged, his insane mind had learned magic. As he emerged into the wilderness, he met Aleanor Pathsteader, who helped him find brief periods of calm in the roiling storm of insanity. In return, Malrakas aided Aleanor in defending the innocent. After several years, Malrakas had mastered his insanity. But, now, it's coming back, and he needs help again.
Going to go straight warlock

So I've got my general concept:

A young, good-hearted half-elf (name not chosen yet) was always interested in helping people, and grew up trying to help out at a local temple whenever possible. Friendly and enthusiastic, he was always welcome at the temple, but he yearned for more: he wanted to one day become a full-on cleric. However, try as he might, he never could seem to make any progress toward that end. Gullible and impressionable, he seemed to lack the discernment and insight necessary to delve deeper into the power of the faith, leaving him unable to learn even the most basic of divine cantrips.

His mentors at the temple tried to gently explain that he didn't have what it takes, and he decided (somehow) that that meant he needed to go off adventuring to become strong enough to become a cleric and wield the power of goodness and light. Ever the optimist, he set out alone with a smile on his face.

He kept practicing at learning magic on his own, but since he never fully grasped how he was supposed to be doing it in the first place, he ended up just kind of winging it. To his surprise, however, he eventually learned to cast spells! Once he had successfully healed a wounded traveler with his magic, the bright-eyed half-elf believed himself to be a true cleric, and that night he prayed really hard in thanks.

And someone replied.

A deep voice in his head introduced itself as "Mordoloth, archfi— er, high celestial of goodness and light" and said it had taken notice of his devotion and dedication. It offered him new magical powers with which to protect himself and smite his enemies (in the name of righteousness, of course). It told him his spells would be different from those of most clerics, because he's special. Overjoyed, the young man now goes looking for opportunities to go on adventures and spread the light of the noble Mordoloth (I made up that name, if that works) and smite evil with his purifying fire!

So, while wandering alone he picked up a level of bard, gaining self-taught healing magic that way. Then Mordoloth tricked him and he gained warlock levels. Starting off as bard1/warlock5, with the acolyte background. When do you need the full character sheet?
