It was only a few days ago that the letters arrived, asking for expert Pathfinders to travel to the remote village of Gundrun, a small fishing village near the southern reaches of the Worldwound in what was once Sarkoris, in order to meet with Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury. After a hasty trip, the team has assembled in the dirt streets, made of veteran Pathfinders each bringing some particular specialization needed for the unknown task ahead.
Welcome one and all! Please sign in on my electronic signy-iny thing. In addition, this scenario offers a hard more. Please PM me if you do or do not want to play hard mode. I will, of course, take one no to mean that we won't be going hard mode, and I will keep this information private.
Before arriving at the village, you are able to purchase any supplies or other equipment that you wish. You will be unable purchase equipment costing more that 750 gp once arriving in Gundrun.
Please introduce your characters to each other as you await Captain Jorsal's arrival.
Imbroglio "Vinnie" Guarini |
A thin Varisian man wearing expensive silks lined with tinkling silver bells and buckles that shine walks in. His dark hair is beginning to streak with silver, and if his midsection is starting to strain a bit at his shirt, he at least carries himself with confidence. He casually bows to anyone already here and theatrically takes a seat, making every movement a sort of dance.
"Good day, Pathfinders. My name is Imbroglio Guarini, but for some reason, I am called 'Vinnie'. I am, of course, a member of the esteemed Varisian family, a wanderer of the roads, a lover of women (and some men, to be honest!) and a gentleman of the highest regard! I greet you, my friends, with smiles and hope that our present engagement is both profitable and full of many happy moments!" He executes a courtly bow and winks conspiratorially.
Tomas Stormborn |
A dull thud sounds through the hallway moments before the door to the briefing room opens. A man dressed in a fairly simple white sleeveless robe steps in and torn trousers. That is however where the simplicity stops as he skin is made from bright steel. A golden foaming mug is tattooed into his bare right arm and a wooden buckler hangs from his belt. He gives a sombre nod to those waiting in the room and introduces himself in the doorway. His voice is deep though not particularly loud, he seems capable of making it fill the room.
"Greetings, my name is Tomas Stormborn of the Silver Crusade. Warpriest of Cayden Cailean."
He then moves out of the doorway and stands in the corner near the back of the room.
Sihir Aneh |
Difficult to notice beside the attention-seizing Varisian and the massive Aasimar is a small, dark man in dark-colored exotic finery, of a visibly Tian style yet with many stranger aspects still.
His facial features are sharp and doll-like, and look almost two-dimensional when viewed in profile. Even more striking than his indigo skin and intense ultraviolet (to those who can perceive it) eyes is his wild mane of hair that somehow manages to be simultaneously white as unfiltered sunlight and black as the Dark Tapestry. A platinum ring in the shape of an ourobouros is prominent on his finger, he (casually) grips a cane in one hand and a bundle of bizarre metal stencils (gripped not-at-all casually) in his other hand, and the central pocket of his fine (if somewhat travel-worn) backpack betrays the outlines of two heavy books.
"Darkness Clear Your Eyes, my friends." He says chipperly. "I am Sihir Aneh Yang Mengembara Alam Semesta, but for mercy to more sun-dried tongues, 'Sihir Aneh' will do."
I have purchased 2 flasks of holy water, 2 2nd-level scrolls, and a scroll box for 355 gold, and requisitioned one more 2nd-level scroll for 1 Prestige.
Fatima al-Izarin |
A tiefling woman shuffles half a step forward, her face pointed at the ground. She wears pale desert robes that hide her figure and give her a wizardly air, and bears no weapon except for a small, slender blade. A scorpion scurries out from a fold in her robe and onto her shoulder.
"My name is Fatima, and it is a pleasure to meet you all. I can fight well if... if you don't mind, that is. An armor spell would be nice, but if that's too much trouble, I have a wand I can try to use. Don't worry about it."
She shuffles a half-step back.
So I do melee tanking and damage, plus some face and rogue skills. It looks like I'm not getting a mage armor from either caster, but if one of you can use my wand so I don't jam it with UMD, I'd appreciate it.
Also, I forgot to write my gold on my sheet here, so I think I need to purchase some things when I get home in an hour.
Herodotus Vanatir Krezla |
As the dour-faced lightly man armored in well-worn Tian armor entered the room a chippy voice that did not seem to belong to him continued it's one-sided tirade :"...and maybe this time you could also try to be a little less ... stiff. You know. More like that suave Chel you bonded with during that attack on Skyr... Oh look at that, looks like you've finally found the briefing room. Congrats! I'll uh... I'll do sword things now."
He stops, keenly aware of the attention he has brought upon himself, and passes a hand through his long brown hair, threading it back behind his large, elven-like ears. "Greetings brother Pathfinders" he states in a grave, sonorous barritone [b]"I am Herodotus Vanatir Krezla, humble servant of the Inheritor. And that voice you just heard was that of Gamin, once the sword of Pathfinder Kalkamedes, now my charge. I apologize for it's current behavior, and it's future behavior."
"Well that's a little unf... Shutting up." says the previous voice, this time you are sure, coming from the scabbard.
Herodotus bows deeply before looking at the other agents assembled with his almost luminescent jade eyes. "It is an honor to be asked to serve alongside you."
Herodotus will buy a headband of Alluring Charisma +2 and 70 Cold Iron arrows.
Imbroglio "Vinnie" Guarini |
Vinnie nods a greeting at everyone as they settle in. His eyebrows raise when he hears Herodotus speak of Kalkamedes. "How's Kalkie doing these days? He was a fun old soul in the day, that one! Once tried to cheat me during Harrows! Woulda worked if I wasn't tryin' to cheat him the same way!"
Ionwe Ver'Ha |
An extremely confident, and dark complexioned half-elven woman walks up. Wearing a long open leather coat, high top boots, leathers, and a tricorner hat with a single fluffy feather on her head. The salty smell of briny water can be smelled strongly from her, her long dark hair somewhat stringy from salt water as opposed to the fairness of usual elven hair. On her waist is a cutlass, and on her back a longbow. Coming to a stop at the small group in the streets of the fishing village, she raises an eyebrow.
"The Society always finds the most interest groups of individuals they can it would seem. Never hard to pick them out, that is for sure." she says somewhat sarcastically.
Touching her hat she continues with a slight grin, "Captain Ver'Ha. You can call me Captain Ver'Ha, or Captain. Do not worry, I do not presume to hold rank above you in regards to our little mission. Listen to me though and you might feel yourselves fairly well emboldened. I am told I am rather....charismatic."

Good to have you all on board! Let's get this ball rolling. We are at exactly APL 7, so we will be playing up with the four-player adjustment. We will not be playing hard mode.
Gundrun is a ramshackle village built on the remains of a once proud clanhold, yet it’s among the few proper settlements that eke out a living in what was once Sarkoris. From the rough yet sturdy buildings, a Mwangi man bedecked in polished, nearly golden plate armor emblazoned with the holy symbol of Iomedae steps onto the dirt road and approaches with a friendly wave. It’s Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury.
“Pathfinders, it’s good to see you again. Walk with me, if you will,” Jorsal requests as he turns toward a crude wooden structure. The he gives a quick signal to a standing guard and opens the door, motioning inwards. “Though the Pathfinder Society doesn’t have an official lodge here in Gundrun, the locals have allowed us to use part of Clefthorn Lodge as a war room to discuss upcoming missions and objectives. Please take a seat.” As the room begins to fill, he closes the door behind him and makes his way to a small desk, where a large parchment map supports a host of red and blue figurines.
“During the First Mendevian Crusade, an Iomedaean cleric named Ghalcor and his assistants built a once-secret weapon to combat the encroaching demonic threat; however, the fighting ended before he could put it to use. I say ‘once-secret’ because the demons heard about the weapon and attacked the tower when combat resumed years later. It seems Ghalcor was caught off-guard. He and his team died in the assault, but not before they triggered special safeguards to keep anyone from capturing the weapon—demon, crusader, or otherwise. Since the weapon was never used, no one knows quite what it does or even how it works. What we do know is that we’ve spotted demons scouting the site as if they intend to break in soon. I trust you understand how that could be worrisome.”
He picks up several of the blue figurines and moves them from Gundrun to a site labeled ‘Ghalcor’s Tower.’ “Queen Galfrey has sent some of her forces to hold the area around Ghalcor’s Tower, but she needs specialists to find a way in. You,” he says with pride, “are those specialists. Travel north to the tower, enter it, handle any hostiles, and find out how the weapon works; you may also be called on to arm and even activate it, if circumstances demand. A brigade of Nerosyan’s crusaders is already on-site awaiting your arrival, and the esteemed Ollysta Zadrian is due to arrive soon with a small contingent to reinforce their position. She may have more details once you arrive.
“Make haste, and may the Inheritor guide your actions.""
Do you have any questions or any preparations you wish to make before you head out to the tower?
Does anyone have any passive abilities (ie, trapspotter) that I should be aware of?
Herodotus Vanatir Krezla |
Agent Kalkamedes was well last I saw him, good Imbroglio. He has also recovered from his bout of sleepwalking. Herodotus states with a deep nod. Turning his attention towards Venture-Captain Jorsal he asks: "What do we know of the type of demons scouting the tower? What is the condition of the general area around the tower? Do we know any specifics concerning the contingencies activated?"

"I'm familiar with Ghalcor - he died early in the Second Crusade, and a genuine misfortune it was; the wardstones were but secondhand products of his research. He was a gentleman and a scholar, as the saying goes, whose knowledge went far beyond his faith, and respected scholars of all backgrounds. In fact, this was what made him such an innovative general: He made scholarship his weapon of choice against the demons, and handpicked his best and brightest crusaders to study the nature of the planes, moral philosophy, and even the Sarkorian blood magic most Iomedans would be too timid and conservative to consider - and it would have been in these most high-minded and fearless studies that this weapon would have been forged, so doubtless it should be quite something!"
Tomas Stormborn |
Making his way into the briefing room, dill thuds from his metallic feet on the tough floorboards, Tomas takes keen interest in the war map as he listens to the Captain's briefing. He cracks his knuckles at the mention of demons and gives a grim smile. Having not studied much about other religions he listens to the Wayang's lesson with interest and nods gravely.
"We shall find this weapon! You say we may need to activate it" his voice fills the space, "Are there any remaining notes or clues on how to do so?"

"He sounds like he was a well liked individual. It is uncommon for the military or clergy to take scholarly study as their weapon. Very interesting. I can only imagine at the machines he probably instituted in the towers defense."

Venture Captain Jorsal sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose before answering, "I do wish that we had more information to give to you, but there is little known about the area. That is why we're sending in your elite team. The tower itself is approximately 20 miles north of here. Once you are fully prepared, I have an ally who can provide you swift and reliable transportation. As for the weapon, we do not even know its true nature, much less its methods of activation. If there is documentation about how the weapon works anywhere, it’s likely in the tower. I have faith that with a little ingenuity and skill, you will succeed.”
Imbroglio "Vinnie" Guarini |
Vinnie shrugs. "We'll take care of it. Might be we'll all come back home, too."
Vinnie takes Fatima aside and murmurs to her "I wonder if you would mind if I gave you a bit of help, hm? I am a student of the mind and I have the ability to implant a small ability in your mind that will trigger if you are ever held against your will. Simply put, if someone tries to grab you and succeeds, you can become as mist long enough to slip free. Will you allow me?"
If Fatima consents, Vinnie will implant the slip bonds mesmerist trick in her mind, granting her +2 circumstance bonus to Escape Artist and the ability to turn incorporeal long enough to slip free of bonds or the grappled condition. It only lasts until used once.

She's already at a +22 Escape Artist with her Corset of the Vishkanya, not to mention great AC and CMD. Maybe put it on Tomas, since he's a melee playing up?
Imbroglio "Vinnie" Guarini |
Good call.
Vinnie nods and speaks to Tomas, offering him the same deal. "I wonder if you would mind if I gave you a bit of help, hm? I am a student of the mind and I have the ability to implant a small ability in your mind that will trigger if you are ever held against your will. Simply put, if someone tries to grab you and succeeds, you can become as mist long enough to slip free. Will you allow me?"
If Tomas consents, Vinnie will implant the slip bonds mesmerist trick in his mind, granting him a +2 circumstance bonus to Escape Artist and the ability to turn incorporeal long enough to slip free of bonds or the grappled condition. It only lasts until used once. Alternately I also have the astounding avoidance trick: The subject can avoid damage from magical and unusual attacks. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject attempts a saving throw against an attack or spell that normally deals half damage on a successful save, before the subject rolls the save. If the subject succeeds at her save, she takes no damage. This does not stack with evasion.
Tomas Stormborn |
Tomas listens to the venture captains explanation in stony silence, nodding his head when they tell the assembled group that information is lacking. Always the case, we experts are left to fend for ourselves when flung into an ocean and must hope we know how to swim against the current.
Lost in thought, it takes the large metallic man a moment before he realises Vinnie had offered him an enhancement. Tomas looks down at the flamboyantly dressed Varisian and stares hard at him with his sapphire blue eyes, after a moment's pondering he nods his assent.
"That trick aounds useful friend, but try to mess with my mind beyond that and you will find out why i'm called 'Stormborn'"
Sounds brill mate, thanks! Tomas' tone is more empty machismo than anything else ;p

Imbroglio takes a moment and stares deeply into Tomas' eyes. "There, done. Try not to need it, oh manly one." Vinnie smiles and turns away. For the life of you, Tomas, you can't remember why but you suddenly have the urge to quack whenever someone says the word "combat."
Herodotus Vanatir Krezla |
Herodotus scowls and purses his lips. "Our charge as the followers of the Inheritor makes us, perhaps, unduly wary of unfamiliar magics, especially if they involve bloodletting."
He pauses for a second before softly adding: "But I am glad for men like Father Ghalcor, no matter their religion, for they remind us of our failings and give us opportunity to remedy them. The Inheritor did not forsake Father Ghalcor, I shan't forsake his legacy. Or legacies."
He bows to Sihir. "Thank you for enlightening us Master Sihir Aneh Yang Mengembara Alam Semesta, your knowledge must be quite vast." Turning his attention back to Venture-Captain Jorsal, he scratches his chin thoughtfully. "Hmm... Is there anything in particular you think we should know before we carry out your will Venture-Captain?"
Ionwe Ver'Ha |
"I am sure the good Venture Captain would ask us all to please not die." Ionwe says as she rises from the chair, straightening her coat and hat, and checking her blade.
"Specialists, how fun. I shall depart to the stables for the time being, perhaps the procurement of a more expeditious means of travel would be beneficial. Do let me know if any other dangers or ill fortune await us that the Venture Captain may have forgotten a few moments ago."
With a flourish of her, the half elf leaves, heading for the local stables to purchase a horse and saddle for travel.

Venture Captain Jorsal takes a long draught of water from his waterskin before saying, "All I must say is this: times are desperate, and we hope that for the sake of all of Mendev, Avistan and even Golarion that this weapon does not turn out to be a false glimmer of hope. Explore, report and cooperate - we need to stand by our values in these times. I trust your judgement and your ability to see past differences to do what must be done. We do not have the luxury of time or careful consideration. Meet with the crusaders already at the tower, and do be polite. Ollysta Zadrian is present, and it would be a pity if you insulted such a distingushed former member of our society."
"Ionwe," Venture Captain Jorsal calls out as she turns to leave, "please stay a moment. Our preparations are not complete."
He opens the door leading to the dirt road and makes a gesture to follow. Outside, a Kellid woman wearing a stone mask waits. The woman crosses her arms.
"One moment," he says before walking over to the woman.
She spits something to him in a whisper, the hissing Hallit evident even though the words do not carry on the wind. He responds and for a few moments, a heated debate ensues before the Venture Captain fishes a small coin pouch out and hands it to her with a clink.
The woman begins an incantation, speaking clearly, "Classem peditum equitumque venire," and drawing sinuous line in the air with her fingers. As the incantation ends, six horses with hair black as the Great Beyond, grey manes and tails that seem to fade instead of end, and smokey hooves stand waiting.
"These will take you to Ghalcor's Tower. May the Inheritor guide your swords today, Pathfinders. I hope that your actions will strike a decisive blow against the forces of the Abyss."
You all have a Phantom Steed, CL 10. They have a movement speed of 100 ft per round and can use the effects of water walk at will.
Ionwe, you can still purchase that horse if you wish. Anyone else doing anything?
The journey through the blight is as uneventful as possible for travels nearing the tear into the Abyss. The twenty miles of travel passes quickly on the arcane horses, their speed causing the strange, corrupted trees and crags to flit past. The occasional sight of flying creatures - surely demons or other planar evils - dot the strange red sky. Except for idle chatter of the occasional clang of gear, the journey passes in deep silence.
Looming over the surrounding wasteland is a large outcropping of weathered rock. However, as the horses draw withing a hundred feet of it, the mirage quickly fades to reveal an octagonal keep of smoothed stone with a central tower the soars higher than the Starrise Spire in Nerosyan. On inspecting the tower, there is no obvious entrance. It is completely sealed.
A palisade crowned with cold iron spikes surrounds the tower. Past it is a dozen tents, and past those is a large command pavilion, where a dozen crusades lean over battle plans and maps, occasionally raising their voices in disagreement but most studiously considering possibilities.
At the entrance to the camp, a young woman in full plate calls out, "Stop and identify yourself. What business do you have here?'

The woman blinks in shock before she says, "Well, it is a bad idea to be unarmored out in the Worldwound. A demon'll pluck out your spleen before you can say Cayden's your uncle. However ——"
A strong voice interrupts with a, "Pathfinders, yes, I sent for these. Come in, come in," and Ollysta Zadrian strides forward with the elegance of Queen Galfrey herself and the strength of a warrior.
She nods to the guard, saying, "Let them pass, Poppa. It'll be on my head if they're infested with shadows," and welcomes the motley crew into the camp, giving a few directions as she quickly strides to the command tend - the privies there, her tent here, the horses tended in that corner.
“Thank you for coming on such short notice, Pathfinders,” Ollysta states calmly. “I hope that Venture-Captain Jorsal explained the situation to you fully because the demonic scouts that we found surveying the tower have sent for reinforcements. Our movements have not gone unnoticed, and we spotted a large contingent of demons and fiend-spawn moving this way. There are more numerous than we had anticipated, so we are relying on you to secure and prepare Ghalcor’s weapon. I intend to assist in the defense of the camp, and everyone is placing their faith in your success. Venture-Captain Jorsal chose each of you for a reason, and I am confident in his decision.” With that, she dons her helmet, walks out of the tent, and calls to her crusaders, including a nod at Tomas and Herodotus.
As the dozens of armored paladins, priests in robes embroidered with holy symbols and other warriors settle in around her, she speaks.
"Without a doubt, the evil we face today is a challenge. It is a challenge of our skill at arms, and we shall be victorious. It is a challenge of our valor, and we shall bravely face the most dreadful threats as a united whole. Last of all, it is a challenge of our grace, for the Silver Crusade fights here not to conquer but to liberate. Do everything that you can to ensure that the weapon within this tower does not fall into the hands of the demons." She falls gavely silent for a moment before speaking again, her voice raising with passion. "Go, and bring light to this forsaken land. I trust each of you to do what you believe is right in accomplishing this goal, for the Society is watching and judging the merits of good by your actions.”
Giving a clap on the back of Tomas and Herodotus, she smiles at them with warmth and says, "Go with your allies. You will do great things today."
It is time to go into the tower, though you do have time for a last-minute preparation.

Each sound clearly comes from the wayfinders they carry, and their magical compasss needles spin wildly with each beat. Minute motes of lights dance across the surface of the tower like ripples in a pond, with each wayfinder close to the center of one set of motes.
