The group gets to the circular room, and realizes that in addition to the stairs, there is another corridor heading north into what looks like a larger area. There is some pale light coming from that area, as if it were much larger but lit further away.

Sorry everyone, my week : Monday, break fix all day. Tuesday, Sick, missed work. Wednesday, Sick, missed work. Thursday, Sick, Worked over time to make up for earlier. Friday, worked 2/3rds of a day, got off early due to holiday, went to sleep. Saturday, spent day car shopping with wife for her new truck. Sunday, slept in and rested, went shopping got groceries, took a 4 hour nap.

The group sneaks up to the edge of the tunnel as best they can. Looking around the edge, they find a large room with odd glowing orbs on the wall every 20 feet. The light they provide is dim, but steady and unflickering.

There are odd sarcophagi scattered around the chamber, a dozen in total. On a raised pedestal there are two more sarcophagi, and a short creature in a robe standing between them.

There are more of the odd orcs in the chamber, they are pushing sobbing goblins into eight of the sarcophagi as the group arrives. As soon as the sarchophagi close on the goblins, the robed figure begins chanting and stroking the sarcophagi on the pedestal.

The two begin to glow, the northern one with blue runes, the southern one with green runes. The six sarcophagi to the north begin to glow with green runes, and the six to the south with blue runes.

There is a sudden wailing from the various sarcophagi, all of which are cut off with a very final suddenness.

Sorry to hear your week was so rough, mdt.

Ling stays low to the ground, tipping her wide hat back on her head to clear her vision. They had certainly found something of great import here; at the sight of the little goblinoids being seemingly murdered inside the sarcophagi, it takes every bit of restraint she has not to run into the room and start spewing fire. She looks to the rest of the group in hopes one of them has a better plan.

Looks like we've got a huge area to cover, eight of the oni- four male, four female- and the little guy in the middle. I wouldn't be surprised if those sarcophagi have something nasty to add to the formula at some point.

My mage armor should still be active, and I've got my wand of magic missile in hand.

Xu & Zamu had 16's, so they go next. Since the target made his perception roll (dicebot hates you guys), he had a standard action (surprise round), he cast a spell when Avernus emerged to attack, because he won initiative and could react first.

Avernus lowers his bow as the skreeling figure falls and the others go strangely still. He claps Zamu heartily once upon the shoulder as he steps past to recover his shield and heavy pick leaning against the nearby wall. "Nicely done, Zamu." He then nods to Ling, "And you as well." As he trades his bow for the twisted shield and pick, he shakes his head ruefully, "I don't know what magics that thing called upon, but I couldn't tell which was the real threat. I'm glad the two of you saw through its trickery."

Ling bows her head appreciatively to Avernus for his kind words. "Glad to be of service. Finally. I want to check out the mastermind's body- I need to know who and what he is."

Ling's going to examine the body of the fallen spellcaster. I'd like to take 20 for a total of 25 if possible, since we're not in immediate danger (I hope). What race does he appear to be, does he have any significant markings or symbols on him, and does he have any useful gear?

I suppose I should detect magic on him as well.

The robed figure resolves into a small mangy rat faced humanoid that is missing patches of fur in various locations. It's neck is twisted at an odd angle, and it appears that when it fell off the pedestal it broke it's neck. It's got fleas all over it.

Detect magic detects a few faint traces of magic in it's belt pouch.

A small finely made crossbow hangs from it's back, not damage in the fall, but apparently never readied. A small quiver of bolts is there as well.

In the belt pouch, Lingfeng finds...

Xu and Zamu open the sarcophagus, and inside they see a male Oni in armor. This Oni however opens it's eyes and leaps out of the Sarcophagus!

Then it's eyes focus on Xu, and it goes to one knee in front of Xu, it's head bowed.

There is no sign of the body of the small oni that was forced into the sarcophagus earlier. There are however some very disturbing rusty colored stains on the interior of the sarcophagus.

Avernus spins as the oni leaps from the sarcophagus, his sword at the ready, but the tip lowers to the ground as the oni kneels and the tiefling's face twists into a look of bald confusion.

"What? What is it doing? Why is it kneeling like that?"

Avernus shrugs and looks at the oni quizzically before asking in abyssal, "Why do you kneel?" He repeats the phrase slowly for Xu if the kneeling thing doesn't respond. If that doesn't work (since it's not orcish) he just shakes his head and shrugs.
