4-19: The Night March of Kalkamedes PFS PBP Gameday #2 (Inactive)

If the spell takes hold, Kalkamedes should shrink to half his height (Small size) and 1/8th his weight. He gains a +2 bonus to Dex, attack rolls and AC but a -2 penalty to strength. Duration is one minute.

He's reduced and underwater. Someone needs to grab him quickly.

Grapple Check of 15 will do it or a strength check of 13 on the rope, will let you pull him along where you want him to go.

While she does not have her hand on the rope, Alspeth has the sword, and she gives a start as the blade starts to....well, yell at her. In her mind.

"We," she says, evenly, "are trying to prevent him from walking into the deep part of the river and drowning. It is temporary." At least, she thinks so, and gives a look to Cirn for confirmation.

Reminder to self: stop trying to kill the lead NPC.

"Whoa! Grab him!" Crin is initially gratified to see that his little spell has worked, but upon seeing Kalkamedes shrink down to his own size the gnome becomes horrified to see the man immediately go underwater. He dives in, trying to pull him up but only succeeds in getting dragged down as well. Only rising air bubbles show where the two were standing, and the rope and harness trailing into the water.

grapple check 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 - If I've ended up drowning Kalkamedes and the game ends, this will be my, like, second-shortest PFS adventure. But so far I think it's going well.

"He'll drown!" Though she pulls the rope when Kalkamedes shrinks, Shayla is unable to pull him up.

Grapple: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

Shayla lets go of the rope and tries to grapple Cirn with both arms. "I think I got him!"

Strat attempts to help Shayla pulling Kalkamedes out of the bog. "Dangit, you're gonna kill yourself!"

No worries, I got called in on a project this weekend.

Kalkamedes is successfully wrangled and moved around the bog, he cheerfully and blindly continues on his way.

Shayla picks up the rope again once they're back on the land, and continues to walk the dog Kalkamedes.

This continues to feel weird...

A sheepish look crosses Crin's face as he wrings the water out of his clothes. "Yeah, thanks for that. Guess I didn't think that through, completely. Are we still heading north?" Crin looks quizzically over at Shayla as she walks beside Kalkamedes.

"Hard to think a person would walk to his own death like that. I don't like this, whatever it is doing it. Does the sword have anything new to say about it?"

"Gamin, did you see that?" Shayla asks out loud while she continues to walk, "Despite what you and I said earlier... I did save his ex-paladin buttox there, didn't I?"

"Shayla! Let her go!" Strat moves up and draws his falchion, bringing it down upon the bear.

5' step north 1 square, move to draw weapon, standard to attack.

Strat's blow just misses, the rest of the party can go.

Niko moves up next to Strat and fires his crossbow.

"Agh! You stupid... get off of me!" Shayla shouts as she attempts to escape the bear's grapple.

Escape Grapple: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

If she escapes the bear's grapple, Shayla will move 5 feet south and draw both her longsword and shortsword.

If she can't escape the bear's grapple, Shayla will draw her shortsword.

Not yet moving Shayla on the map, because I'm not sure if she can escape the grapple.

Niko's crossbow bolt strikes true, dealing 5 damage, Shayla struggles to escape the grapple, but cannot, still she can draw her shortsword.

Wanting to help Shayla, Crin's fingers stray towards his crossbow, but he's indecisive. Shayla needs help, but he doesn't really want to hurt the bear if he can help it. Studying the bear for a moment, he summons some of his innate gnomish talent to speak to the bear. "Hey, bear! Why are you hurting my friend! If we go away will you go away?" If the bear doesn't react, Crin reluctantly takes up his crossbow and fits a bolt.

Cast speak with animals as a spell-like ability. If possible, will attempt a Diplomacy/Charisma check to get on the bear's good side.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Her glaive, the weapon she's trained with since her youth, is still strapped to her back. Alspeth grits her teeth, feeling defenseless even with the blade in her hand. "All right," she says. "I will take any help you can get."

The sword casts Guidance.

The young woman steps forward, and swings Gamin the Misforged at the bear.

The young woman's blade strikes true, but the bear seems barely bothered by it. Suddenly, the spell reacts with the bear and Crin's words are able to be translated.

"So hungry," The bear growls back at Crin.

"Get this darn beast off of me!" Shayla's having a small panic attack.

Crin moves forward and throws up his hands to the bear, growling to the it: "Wait, bear! We can give you something much tastier than the elf, I'm sure. See how scrawny she is?" Turning his head to the others, he urges, "Quick! Anyone have any food to feed this bear? We don't have to kill it, as long as we can distract it. Anyone have any fresh meat? Fish?" Inwardly, Crin is cursing himself for thinking this night-time mission wouldn't require any rations. He's also conscious of being just the right size to be bite-sized morsel for a hungry bear.

An unfamiliar sword at the ready, Alspeth is trying to keep the bear's claws from finding purchase.

"I do not," she calls, turning her head just for a second to address their Bard. "I did not think it was going to be necessary. Obviously, I was mistaken!"

I will still give you an opportunity to end this with diplomacy if you can come up with something, but it is the Bear's turn on initiative and he's going to attack.

Maintain Grapple +5 for Previous success: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (18) + 16 = 34

Bite Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Shayla you can attempt an Escape Artist or a Grapple Check to escape, you have to beat the following DC/CMD 23

In addition, any party member can attempt to Aid Another to help her escape: An attack roll of 10 or higher, will give her a +2 to her check/roll.

Crin, I'm holding off to see if you want to try to diplomatize this bear. If you do, I'll try to heal Shayla instead of attacking this round.

I'm holding my action as well, and hoping for the best.

"Bear! Don't eat my friend! She will give you a sore stomach, you'll not like it. Really, I think there are fish in the stream north of here, big, juicy salmon. Don't you want to go have a look?" Crin continues his odd grumblings and growlings as he attempts to communicate with the bear, fighting to keep a note of desperation out of his voice - Shayla looks like she's in a bad way.

K, I made a mistake and Strat should have hit, because the bear technically had the grappled condition. Bear's still in pretty good shape, but he's not basically unharmed. -15 from bears HP total

Shayla's swing just misses the bear (AC is currently 14 for the Bear). Niko can go, then it will be Bear's turn.

Shayla's obviously panicking after her failed attack. She struggles to get away from the bear, but to no avail.

Please, Ketephys, let me survive this!

Niko grimaces as the bear negotiations breakdown. Stepping northeast, he reloads and fires again.

Crin wrings his hands for a moment as he realizes he's not going to talk the bear into leaving Shayla alone, concern for his comrades warring with his reluctance to harm animals. In the end, he takes a step back, out of reach of the bear. "Sorry bear." He raises a hand, and a silvery mote of magical energy darts out to strike at the bear.

With a rush of adrenalin Shayla strikes at the bear with her shortsword. "Hyaa!" she screams, her voice a mixture of both fear and anger.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

"Let her go!" Alspeth shouts, trying to get around so she doesn't risk hitting Shayla when Alspeth attacks the bear once more.

Summoning her last bit of resolve, Shayla plunges her blade deep into the exposed belly of the bear.

Killing the bear.

The bear slumps down on top of Shayla, but it's claws retract allowing her to pull herself out from underneath.

During the fight, Kalkamedes has been tugging against his bounds trying to continue forward, will you let him, or will you heal up first?

Shayla holds Kalkamedes back for a moment. "Guys... I should've brought one of those wands that heal you when I could... But as I currently don't own one, could one of you patch me up?"

Niko produces a wand and uses it to heal Shayla.

CLW: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (5, 5) + 2 = 12

"Thanks Niko!" Shayla watches the wounds heal, until only a few scratches remain.

Kalkamedes continues to pull the leash, and Shayla starts walking. "Let's go, it's only getting later."

Impressive kill with the bear!

Crin is genuinely sorry that the bear died, but his first thought is to go check on Shayla. "Shayla, are you alright?" He casts a curious glance up at Kalkamedes as he follows along.

I really expected Shayla to die there. That crit and Alspeth's awesome damage came just in time!

"I'm fine now, thanks Crin. I appreciate you trying to talk the bear out of killing me." Shayla pats Crin's shoulder. "Don't feel bad it had to be put down; you tried what was within your abilities."

This gets a low chuckle from the usually stoic woman as she walks with the others. "I think it was more courageous to try and calm the raging bear down. Anyone can poke it with a blade," she says, self-effacing.

Over the course of another two hours, the rough, mountainous scrubland gradually flattens and gives way to thicker copses of trees sustained by a series of chilly, narrow streams.
Kalkamedes’s trail meanders northward.
