spinning his staff high Mathias grabs it by the center with both hands. Driving it down to crush the next rat.

No, I don't believe this!
Beswaur empties a vial of holy water on the apparent swarm of rats.
I don't know if there shoult be an attack roll since they are all over us, but I will roll an attack and damage in case.
touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 if hits holy damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6

Mathias's staff smashes into a rat on the head killing it instantly.
Beswaur's holy water covers a multitude of rats, but other than making them slightly cleaner seems to have no effect.
The rats continue to bite and chew but now there are even more of them, everywhere the party looks the rats are multiplying with new rats shaking out duplicates at an alarming speed.
Attack 1 - Marcus: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Attack 14 - Beswaur: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

The floor is now beginning to swarm with rats all of which are nipping and clawing at the adventurers legs and thighs.

All hits doing 1 non lethal damage.

You guys are up.

It isn't much but even these minor bites will kill us eventually. We aren't improving things. Let's retreat.
withdraw action

Mathias draws back as well.

I wonder if they can continue this split infinitely or not. If not we could pin them in a doorway and take them on from one side.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus withdraws out the door as well.

Well those are terrible, burn them? Though that wouldn't be very safe for the house.

I already tried fire, it didn't seem to have any effect. continues withdrawing.

I thought you tried acid and holy water?

As the party retreat out of the kitchen the multitude of rats scatter, obviously happy that they threat has now evaporated. They turn tail and being to reinsert themselves into cupboards and other hiding places.

Also I do like the diablo tactic Mathias suggested.

Ha! You're right. I did use acid the first time. Memory goes... somthing

Lets check the final room downstairs and then the upstairs and attic. We can return to this rat infestation later if need be, but I think that once the ghosts are laid to rest we should be able to burn the building and let the forest reclaim the ground. Nature will naturally heal this scar after that.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

I agree, the rats should die in the fire while ghosts might not.

Mathias heads to the final room downstairs. Or upstairs if we have to go through the rats nest again.

The last room on the ground floor is the most spacious so far in this placce. It is 20ft by 40ft. The floor is covered in small animal bones (of which rat features highly) leftover bits of clothing and filthy bedrolls. On the western all is a fireplace that looks as if it could still work. A thorough search of room indicates that the fire and the bedroom have been used much more recently than the rest of this house. Probably 3 months ago.
Underneath one of the bedrolls is a distinctive leather pouch containing 55gp and 13sp. However of the owner there is no sign.

I have assumed you've taken 20 on this search given the lack of danger presenting itself here. I'll take suggestions even if that suggestion is - go to the remaining room on the upper floor

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Do either of you sense anything foul here?

Mathias pokes through the ashes in the fireplace

1/2orc Warpriest (Champion of the Faith) of Desna 3, HP:24/24, AC:20, Touch:12, Flat Footed:18 F:+5, R:+3, W:+7(extra +2 vs charm compulsion), Init:+2, Perc:+3

checking, hmm...
Detect Alignment then Detect Magic counter clockwise around the room starting at the door.
spellcraft if needed: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus is poking around the bedrolls and anything else that looks like it belonged to whoever was living here, detecting evil as he goes.

This isn't a place any reasonable person would live. So it either wasn't so haunted a few months ago when they were here or they were here specifically for the haunting. If it is the latter this town might have bigger problems than just the ghosts and monsters here.

The ashes in the fireplace reveal only several burnt tin soldiers, which are now a pile of scorched paint, their faces twisted into eerie shapes by the flames.

There is no alignment or evil detected in the room. There is tucked away in beside one of the three bedrolls is a small leather backpack that is starting to grow mildrew. It contains two mouldy tunics and enough spoiled provisions to have fed a person 5 or 6 days.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

I doubt anyone would have left these provisions or their equipment here and stumbled off. I have a sneaky feeling that something foul befell this houses previous guests.

crouching down Mathias peers up the chimney to ensure nothing his hiding there before moving on.

1/2orc Warpriest (Champion of the Faith) of Desna 3, HP:24/24, AC:20, Touch:12, Flat Footed:18 F:+5, R:+3, W:+7(extra +2 vs charm compulsion), Init:+2, Perc:+3

The multitude of rats could have easily consumed them, but then I would expect to still see bone fragments. {shrug} Let's check the remainder of the upstairs.

The stairs creak as the trio climbs them again. The last room upstairs is the remains of a nursery. There was at one stage a wooden playpen that took up most of this room, however most of the bars are broken and it is now a dilapidated pile of rotting wood. Various toys are strew across the floor. There are the remains of stuffed animals now mostly covered in mould, wooden blocks that are now faded and peeling, hoops that are so broken they are barely recognizable, and wooden toy chests that have been upturned.

Beswaur's detect evil detects no evil in this room.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Mathias waits for Beswaur to be satisfied with the room before moving on to the attic.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Marcus looks about the room but doesn't investigate further when he detects no evil.

I am glad we didn't find whatever shade this room would have produced. Hope the little ones made it out ok.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

I am leaving tomorrow morning to go camping and likely won't be able to post again until Monday. Feel free to bot me if you enter combat.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

I will be camping as well... what are the odds.

Beswaur does not spot any evil within the room.

The key from the lower level opens the lock on the hatch to the attic. Pulling the hatch open releases a cloud of dust into the hall. Peering up into the gloom Mathias can see a wooden ladder that is designed to be pulled down. After some good tugs the mechanism works and a ladder comes down so that it may be accended to reach the attic.

The attic is a small cramped room. It has three large chests all of which are secured with iron locks. These locks are bronze and have thus withstood the ravages of time that the rest of the metal in this house has endured.

Crammed against the other wall is a bookshelf with all sorts of itmes on it, there are several vases, several old furs, some small wooden boxes, stacks of memorabilia, but no books.

The only other item in the room is a small writing bureau in the other corner. This contains several books and an inkwell, all of which are covered in dust.

All of these items barely leave enough space for the three adventures to stand up here together.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Now why would there be a writing desk in the attic where there is so little space?

Mathias steps forward 1 stride and using his staff shuffles through the items on the desk, not touching them he also looks at the items on the shelves.

What do you two make of the chests?

1/2orc Warpriest (Champion of the Faith) of Desna 3, HP:24/24, AC:20, Touch:12, Flat Footed:18 F:+5, R:+3, W:+7(extra +2 vs charm compulsion), Init:+2, Perc:+3

Watch my back and I will open the chests.
.
Beswaur pulls the adamantine wire saw from his packs, carefully examines the chests, then gets to work.
perception, take 20: 20 + 3 = 23
.
Even if I don't see any traps, I will try to saw off the hinge pin coil rather than the lock. Most traps probably don't blow out the back of the box. Though if it is a magic trap that I missed, I'm probably screwed.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

I don't see a reason not to open them.

Marcus will stand ready with his sword in one hand and a bless weapon oil in the other.

Mathias shuffling the papers locates a thick red book that looks suitably important. There is no title or name embossed on it looks like a record book or journal. He's not quite sure if he can open it with his staff or not but do feel free to try

After carefully checking the chest Beswaur gets to work. Sawing off the hinge takes him almost quarter of an hour, but is eventually successful. The back of the chest comes off easily with the hinge cut through. The chest contains a haul of fine silverware and several small silver statues of Desna. The statues are particular fine and are engraved on the bottom with the phrase "To Mother Comfort To Help the Children Pray". The silverware has no identifying markings. nobody seems to have an appraise check so the treasure is 'valuable' of an unknown quanity

As Beswaur starts to load the silverware into his back a low chuckle and cheeky laughter fills the room. Casting eyes around the room the party look nervously at one another but do not see the source of this mirth.

1/2orc Warpriest (Champion of the Faith) of Desna 3, HP:24/24, AC:20, Touch:12, Flat Footed:18 F:+5, R:+3, W:+7(extra +2 vs charm compulsion), Init:+2, Perc:+3

I'd suggest quickly grabbing all the papers. If we have to pull back, the info could be valuable.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Mathias grabs the book and then takes up a defensive position covering Beswaur.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Show yourself spirit!
Marcus shouts and looks around the room trying to determine which direction it came from.

Nothing happens as Mathias grabs the book. In this tight room it is a little hard to take up a defensive position but Mathias is sort of getting there.

Of the chuckle and laughter there is no further sound. Marcus's shouts vanish into the air and bring back no response.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Mathias begins to flip through the pages of the book.

1/2orc Warpriest (Champion of the Faith) of Desna 3, HP:24/24, AC:20, Touch:12, Flat Footed:18 F:+5, R:+3, W:+7(extra +2 vs charm compulsion), Init:+2, Perc:+3

Let's take the stuff into the sunlight and out of this creepy place so we can all look over the papers in relative peace.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Creature of the night! Come and face your judgement!
Man I wish there was some kind of exorcism mechanic.

Very well let us see what we can learn. Marcus' voice returns to a normal tone and he helps the others carry some of the documents out to better light.

The party's journey into the daylight occurs without difficulty. Standing in the cool autumn light feels decidedly warmer than that haunted place.

The heavy journal seems to be a ledger detailing both payments made to the orphanage, and details of children coming into its care.

Mathias eager to locate Othelia hurriedly flicks through looking for her name. There on 17 Lamashan almost eleven years ago is her name. Written in a strong firm hand is the notation "Othelia arrived. Whisp of a girl. Accompanied with donation of 50gp and a stunning ruby necklace."

Continuing to turn through the book there is no sign of Othelia's name ever again. Marcus with his quick memory spots the inscriptions of "Henry, deceased" on 15 Kuthona of that year. Being the name of one of the graves out back would suggest that the deaths were recorded.

1/2orc Warpriest (Champion of the Faith) of Desna 3, HP:24/24, AC:20, Touch:12, Flat Footed:18 F:+5, R:+3, W:+7(extra +2 vs charm compulsion), Init:+2, Perc:+3

Let's check all for all the names on the grave markers. When arrived, any other notes, and when died. Also if the time or amounts seem odd in comparison to the rest of the journal.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Mathias continues to thumb through the book on Beswaur's suggestion.

It takes most of the rest of the afternoon but eventually all of the deceased names from the book have been matched up with tombstones. It turns out Mathias was a little boy around 8 when he died from suspected diphtheria.

This is most concerning to the older Mathias, who knew that Othelia's name wasn't listed on the children when the orphanage burnt down. Nor does the book give any indication she was adopted out before the unfortunate accident.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

this book seems to yield little hope for Othelia. Unless you would like to search for something more I suggest we wrap this haunted home up quickly.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Othelia wasn't old enough to just grow up and leave the orphanage right?

I am sorry Mathias. There were more chests upstairs that could hold more clues. Or we just burn it down the rest of the way.

Yup. She wasn't old enough to just leave. There was a note that a boy Finagin had tried to run away but was refound two days later and 'appropriately dealt with'. There is no other mention of runaways

Just a gentle prod - the two suggestions are to either burn the house down, or to check the rest of the chests.

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Mathias heads in to empty the chests before burning the remnants of the house down.

1/2orc Warpriest (Champion of the Faith) of Desna 3, HP:24/24, AC:20, Touch:12, Flat Footed:18 F:+5, R:+3, W:+7(extra +2 vs charm compulsion), Init:+2, Perc:+3

Sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, we will go open the other chests. If they aren't too bulky or heavy, we might just as well haul them out here before opening them.
.
Some information, but not enough. Let's check those 2 remaining chests. If we don't learn something clear cut, maybe we should just burn the whole place to the foundations.

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Sorry, I am still here.

Marcus has his friends' backs they go back up to the other chests.

The stairs creak ominously again as the party climb to the attic, but other than eerie noises setting skin on edge nothing else happens.

Practice certainly has made Beswwaur's task of opening these chests at their hinges easier and quicker. As he opens the lid off the party see the skeletonal remains of a small child inside this chest. The child's clothes have disintegrated into rags with the eons of time, and it is still clutching a ratty teddy bear.
As they watch the skeleton sits up and looks at them. "Brother have you come to play with me?" A voice very similar to the giggles asks. "It's been years. "

Male Human Monk 3 | HP:12/25 | AC: 15 (19 w/potion), FF: 12 (16 w/potion), TC: 15 (19 w/potion) | Fort:4, Ref:5, Will:7 (+2 vs enchantment) | Init:6, Perc:7

Resisting the urge to remove this undead creature from this plain Mathias asks,

What is your name child?

Male Halfling Paladin 1 | HP:11/11 | AC: 17, FF: 16, TC: 12 | Fort:3, Ref:1, Will:1 | Init:2, Perc:1

Be careful Mathias. This won't still be her.
